3 February 2016 MESSENGER What is family success? What do you need for a family to succeed? In the month of February, our objective will be to focus on family relationships. We will have targeted teaching to help you grow into a better family member. The home can be our safest haven, but it is easily our hardest school. So, let s go to school on the home. A few years ago, a book entitled, All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten took America by storm. The author, Robert Fulghum, captured our attention and reminded us that the most important lessons in life are learned early. Most of what you need to know to succeed should be, and can be, learned in the home. What should you learn at home? Love, respect, giving, winning, losing, humor, priorities, compassion, forgiveness, healing, patience, listening, and talking should be learned in the home. Most likely, the home you are creating is the one that created you. I know that is a frightening thought, but we tend to reproduce what produced us. That is why learning and practicing biblical principles concerning relationships is vital to your success as a family. If you can see it in the Bible, you can see it in your home. A lack of faith in God s Word causes us to doubt His ways. You have to see God s ways as best, not just right, and make up your mind to practice His ways in your home. Relationships can get complicated, but God s plan for the home is quite simple. Husbands love - wives respect. Fathers lead - mothers guide. Both parents nurture. Children obey and grow. Living out these roles starts by acknowledging Jesus Christ as Lord of your life and home. For this to work, you cannot make excuses or exceptions for yourself based on your past or your personality. You are a new creation in Jesus Christ. You are starting something new in your home that will succeed. Let s look at a few Scriptural principles for family relationships. Husbands are to love their wives as Christ loved the church. This means that a husband should be sacrificial in his love for his wife. (See Ephesians 5:25.) Husbands should demonstrate the spirit of servitude, not lordship. Wives are to submit to their own husbands, just as they submit themselves to the Lord. (See Ephesians 5:22.) The husband is the head of the home, just as Christ is the head of the church. If a wife wants protection and provision, she should respect her husband and submit to his leadership in the home, as he submits to the leadership of Jesus Christ. A synopsis of the husband-wife relationship is found in Ephesians 5:33: Nevertheless let each one of you in particular so love his own wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband. Children are to obey their parents in the Lord, for this is right. (See Ephesians 6:1.) Children are to honor their parents, and are given the promise of favor from the Lord for doing so. (See Ephesians 6:2-3.) The Bible gives a balancing principle to protect the innocent and sincere submission of children to their parents: And you, fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath, but bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord (Ephesians 6:4). When you refuse to follow biblical principles, you program your home for failure. Home life turns to home strife when a family member feels they are not being treated as they should, and as a reaction, give themselves permission to disobey the Bible. For example, a husband might say, Well she is not respecting my role as head of the home, so I cannot love her as Christ loved the church. A wife might feel vulnerable if she is not secure in her husband s love and, as a defense mechanism, display a less than submissive spirit. In the month of January, we spent a great deal of time talking about the blessed life. We learned that God blesses obedience and that receiving that blessing is a clear choice. I appeal to you to stand still long enough to evaluate your role in your family and evaluate how you can make the changes necessary to make your home succeed. And what does success look like for the home? It is husbands and wives who fulfill their unique roles and faithfully and lovingly live together for a lifetime. A successful home requires parents who raise their children with a biblical worldview, nurturing them and teaching them to love God first. Successful children are contributing members of the family, church, and community. They achieve their maximum potential in life and reproduce what produced them. We live in a world where the biblical model for the home has been displaced by every conceivable configuration of the family unit. Let s seek God for His strength to form a family that defines success by biblical standards. Then, let s lead families, who have lost their footing, back to God and His infallible Word. 3
