3 October 2018 MESSENGER My heart began to beat faster as I counted down the miles: I was bound for home. Familiar sights near home brought back a flood of memories. I thought about my high school years. We drove past the grocery store where I held my first job. I could taste the food at Molina s Ranch my favorite Cuban restaurant. I could smell the pastries from the Florida Bakery. Twenty years of memories from home inundated my mind. I was reminiscing and reliving great times. My sons indulged me as they listened to the familiar stories all over again. I was almost home. It was just another mile. After rounding the last corner, I finally could see the huge ficus tree that always dominated our front yard. The pastel-colored house where my siblings and I were raised was in full view, and I was home. Mom and Dad greeted our family with the warmth and excitement of a grand homecoming. As usual, there was more food than we possibly could eat in the few days we would be home, including Key lime pie. We relished the pictures, stories and memories galore. Welcome home. People are hard-wired with a homing instinct: an innate desire for things familiar and warm thoughts from our past. These memories often serve as emotional anchors in our lives. (I acknowledge that you may have memories you would rather erase; experiences that warped instead of shaped, and actions that hurt instead of helped.) Deep in our hearts is a longing for home, a desire for safe relationships, and the calm that comes from being at peace with our past. We have a yearning for old friends, memorable experiences and special places. In the story of the prodigal son, Jesus tells of a wayward son the younger brother who experiences how it feels to be welcomed back home. As this younger brother eats the best meal he s had in months, perhaps years, and feels the warmth of the robe on his back, he replays the whole story of his departure in his mind. He had not been happy at home. He wanted his share of the family fortune. His father relented. With his inheritance in hand, he packed his belongings and set his sights on faraway places. The lure of new friends and boundless freedom appealed to his young, restless heart. He walked away from safe surroundings and into that far country. He squandered his inheritance through wild living. In a short time, his money ran low, and his new friends ran off. He went from plenty to poverty almost overnight. He was starving. Desperate times demanded desperate measures, so he took a job with a farmer who sent him into the field to feed pigs. The pigs food looked good to him, but no one gave him anything to eat. His growling stomach made him homesick, not only for a roof over his head and food, but also for the relationships he abandoned when he walked away. That s when he came to himself and turned his heart toward home. Coming home can seem like such a long trip for a prodigal. As much as they want to return, the embarrassment and feelings of failure can make them feel hopeless. There are relational bridges to rebuild, wrongs to make right, and sins to confess. A prodigal often needs to forgive others and overcome bitterness. Ultimately, for a prodigal to come home, there has to be a change of mind. The son in Jesus story found a new point of view. He left home demanding that his father give him what he deserved. When he came home, he asked his father to make him like one of the hired servants. He went from give me to make me. The wayward son was surprised that while he was still a long way off, his father saw him coming. Filled with love and compassion, he ran to his son, embraced him, and kissed him (Luke 15:20). What a story. A lost son found a reunion and a reconciliation. On Sunday, October 14, Evangelist Nick Mahaney will be sharing the story of his return to the Father s house. He will also be with us on Sunday, November 11 to minister hope and restoration to those we have in the house. Please begin to pray now for those you know who are away from the Lord. Reach out to them with authentic love and concern for their soul. This could be the season they will come to themselves and come home. The last mile of the long road home for prodigals should not be made alone. If we assume the role of the father in this story, we will run down the road to meet them. Our arms will be open and restoration of what was lost will be our mission. 3
