1 H E A D L I N E R C H U R C H B R E T H R N O F T H E MARCH 2019 "We who are strong ought to put up with the failings of the weak, and not to please ourselves. Each of us must please our neighbor for the good purpose of building up the neighbor." Romans 15:1-2 (read 15:1-6) NRSV Strength is not only a privilege, but an obligation. This is true of any strength we possess. Some strengths are not readily visible, for instance, emotional, spiritual or physical abilities. Some are more obvious, such as possessions and relationships. These are not only for our enjoyment and pleasure, but a responsibility to God and each other. Whatever strength or ability we possess has been given to us by the creative power of God. What we are and what we possess are God's. An analogy would be a potter who creates a piece of pottery. The pottery is not independent of the one who brought it into being and gave it form, neither are we independent of God who has created us. The Apostle Paul teaches the strong to bear with the failings of the weak. He is specifically referring to those who are spiritually weak. By implication he is teaching that our strengths should be used to edify the weak and do good for our neighbor. There are times when our patience wears thin with those around us and our circumstances, whether within the church or the world. At this point we need humility. Humility is recognizing our place in God's scheme of things. God continues to create and recreate us and those around us. Likewise, God alone is the judge of others. If we realize that we ourselves are not finished (and thus, "weak") in every area and that the judgment seat is not ours, it gives us the humility to be forbearing of others. Armed with this Christ-like humility, we can bear with one another's failing. When we bear with others we bear the cross and are drawn closer to Jesus by this shared experience. He is our example. His Spirit gives us the power to make the example real in our daily living. Paul understood this through his own life experience. Few persons have been endowed with more strength and ability than Paul. Sometimes this made him proud and arrogant. In many instances, however, Paul manifested his strength by forbearing almost unbearable weaknesses in those around him. Some insisted that all Gentiles converted to Christianity should keep the Law of Moses and, if male, be circumcised. Paul wrestled against this "tooth and nail." He won from the council in Jerusalem the reversal of this unreasonable demand. Yet, in Acts 16, we find that he had his associate Timothy circumcised after this issue had been decided for the sake of the Jews amongst which they ministered. Paul lived what he taught. As Christians, we must also walk in the path of Jesus. Scripture is the account of God's redemption of creation culminating in Jesus Christ. It guides us toward God's purpose. Paul describes three qualities of spiritual strength in Romans 15:4. The first which is necessary for our strength is "steadfastness." Steadfastness is a persistence that refuses to give up (not a bullheadedness that fails to recognize when to quit pursuing ambition and self-will). It is like the wrestler who refuses to let go. Think of Jacob's all night struggle in order to receive a blessing in Genesis 32. A companion to "steadfastness" is "encouragement". "Encouragement" is the strength and insight which we receive as we study and live the gospel together. We are to encourage one another by word, deed and presence. The third element is "hope." Hope is our trust in the benevolent purpose of God even in the midst of a creation that is incomplete and imperfect. It knows that God does all things well. It is not some idyllic belief that our lives and this world will just get better and better, nor is it the idea that all we desire in this world shall be ours. True hope is and must be grounded in God, in what has been done for us through Jesus Christ, and what is yet to be done. Hope, and steadfastness, and encouragement enable us to receive God's strength. That strength empowers us to bear one another's failing and share in the burden of Christ's cross. As God continues to work with, among and in us, we become more and more able to do so. Paul prays in Romans 14:5-6, that we are in accord with Jesus Christ and have harmony with one another. We stand responsible before God for our use of the strengths given to us. We deny the gifts of God when we deny our strength and ability! What are your strengths? If you are strong emotionally, can you use your coping power to strengthen those who have endured much? If you have spiritual strength, can you use your power to intercede for, encourage and lift up others? If your strengths are physical, can you glorify God by using your hands to bring your neighbor's good? If you are wealthy, can you use your possessions to provide strength to others? Have you ever thought about the relationships God has given you and what wonderful opportunities they present to strengthen Christ's church? Let us be strong for God and for one another that we may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! David K.
