1 2018, Issue 4 MAY West Richmond Church of the Brethren National Youth Sunday We will celebrate National Youth Sunday with the rest of the denomination on Sunday, May 6. Please join in supporting the youth as they lead worship. Our BRIEF Spring Congregational Business Meeting is scheduled for after worship on Sunday, May 21, to hear the Year-End report from Hilltop Preschool Director, Jackie Algood, and announce member changes to Hilltop s Board of Directors. Come Share Lunch With Us! Following worship on Sunday, May 20, our Christian Ed. Commission hosts a Potato Bar Luncheon to raise money to cover National Youth Conference expenses for Shaun Finchum and advisor Dustin Dedrick, who will attend the July conference in Colorado. The cost of NYC is around $2,000 for their registration and plane fare. Of that, $1,000 is covered by our budget, so olny $1,000 needs to be raised. The luncheon is strictly donation only so all people are welcome. From Our Pastor 2 In Our Congregation 3 Calendar & Schedule 4-5 With Our Community 6 Around the District 7 On the Horizon 8

2 P age 2 The Herald Six Ways To Help Your New Pastor Succeed Very soon, David Whitten and his family will arrive to live and work among you. Plans are already well under way to offer welcome and hospitality in generous and practical ways. As you continue to make preparations, think and pray over these over-arching ways you can help David thrive here. 1) ENCOURAGE YOUR PASTOR TO WORK FROM HIS STRENGTHS. No pastor can do everything well. Enable your pastor to emphasize his strengths and draw on the gifts of others to assist in areas where he is not as gifted. 2) ENCOURAGE YOUR PASTOR TO MAKING SPENDING TIME WITH GOD A PRIORITY. A pastor should work for God first and foremost, so it follows that he should be intentionally listening to God and growing in his relationship with God. His schedule should be balanced between prayer and study and being out and about responding to the needs of the church and the world. 3) ENCOURAGE YOUR PASTOR TO PUT FAMILY FIRST. I once knew a pastor that believed that if he took care of the church, God would take care of his family, but it just doesn t work that way. Expect your pastor to work hard, but allow him to put family first and join him in loving and supporting them. 4) DON T EXPECT YOUR PASTOR TO BE A MIRACLE WORKER. Almost every church wants a 35 year old pastor with 20 years of experience who will bring in lots of families with young children and restore the church to her glory days. Sorry, but that s not his job. His calling is to help the church discern and follow God s leading to be its best, faithful self for today and tomorrow. Assist him in this process by being open and willing to imagine a new and hopeful future for WRCOB. 5) CONTINUE TO GIVE YOUR PASTOR FREEDOM IN THE PULPIT. Your pastor will often preach sermons that offer comfort and encouragement, and this is good and right. But other times, he will be burdened with a prophetic message that may be hard to hear and even harder to live into. Stand with him and encourage him to share what he believes God has laid on his heart. 6) FINALLY, PRAY THAT YOUR PASTOR WILL BE NOT THE MINISTER THAT THIS CHURCH NEEDS, BUT THE MINISTER THE WORLD NEEDS. Of course the pastor will tend to the needs of the flock here, but he also needs to be involved in the wider church and in the world. Help him to balance caring for you with enabling you to be the church the world needs. I look forward to hearing how God is working in and through you as you begin this journey together. Until then, I m on the journey with you, Tracy (Thanks to my ministry colleague Larry Hovis for supplying the initial points for this article.)

Bear with one another and, if anyone has a complaint against another, forgive each other; just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.
