1 Philadelphia Presbyterian Church 351 Morrow Road, Forest Park, Georgia THE CROSSROADS Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls. Jeremiah 6:16 AUGUST 2012 Forget Self and Serve A light in the community that brings all people to God through Christ centered worship and ministry and nurtures their faith in order to extend His kingdom. Pastor: Dr. Spencer R. Frye Phone: Fax: Pastor srfppc@bellsouth.net Secretary secyppc@bellsouth.net Website: ppc-usa.org 1-4If you've gotten anything at all out of following Christ, if his love has made any difference in your life, if being in a community of the Spirit means anything to you, if you have a heart, if you care then do me a favor: Agree with each other, love each other, be deep-spirited friends. Don't push your way to the front; don't sweet-talk your way to the top. Put yourself aside, and help others get ahead. Don't be obsessed with getting your own advantage. Forget yourselves long enough to lend a helping hand. 5-8Think of yourselves the way Christ Jesus thought of himself. He had equal status with God but didn't think so much of himself that he had to cling to the advantages of that status no matter what. Not at all. When the time came, he set aside the privileges of deity and took on the status of a slave, became human! Having become human, he stayed human. It was an incredibly humbling process. He didn't claim special privileges. Instead, he lived a selfless, obedient life and then died a selfless, obedient death and the worst kind of death at that a crucifixion. 9-11Because of that obedience, God lifted him high and honored him far beyond anyone or anything, ever, so that all created beings in heaven and on earth even those long ago dead and buried will bow in worship before this Jesus Christ, and call out in praise that he is the Master of all, to the glorious honor of God the Father. Philippians 2: 1-11 The Message INSIDE THIS ISSUE: THANK YOU 2 CONGRATULATIONS 2 CRAFT GROUP 3 FROM THE CLERK 3 PW MESSAGE CORNER... BIRTHDAYS & ANNIVERSARIES PRAYER RE- QUESTS The annual Good Shepherd Clinic will be held at Morrow Center, located at Southlake Mall. This year s Tomato Sandwich Party will be from 5-7:30 p.m. A minimum donation at the door will be $10 per person and includes a variety of food and drink featuring make-your-own tomato sandwiches, a pickle bar, and dessert.

2 PHILADELPHIA PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH PAGE 2 OUR MISSION: To exhibit the kingdom of God to our community by being a witness to everyone who is within our reach that Jesus Christ is LORD. To proclaim the gospel by telling the good news of Jesus Christ while equipping all who will to be evangelist so the church will grow. To provide for the worship of God through traditional Sunday morning worship and offer alternative times and styles of worship to the community. To promote the ministry of compassion by providing opportunities for ministry and encouraging others to seek God s call for compassionate service. To preserve the truth of God s word by defending the faith against any deviation from the bible as objective truth. To educate the members of the body of Christ so they are equipped to live as becomes the followers of Jesus. To maintain the spirit of unity through the fellowship of the children of God. To expand the kingdom of Jesus Christ. CONGREGATIONAL MEETING August 19 A Congregational Meeting will be held immediately following the worship service on August 19 for the purpose of electing two members from the congregation to serve on the Elder Nominating Committee and for distributing copies of new By- Laws for review and study prior to a vote in September. 3 PAGE 4 PHILADELPHIA PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH PAGE 3 FROM THE CLERK If you have been walking around the church property recently, you would have noticed several stakes in the vicinity of the circular drive and going out toward Morrow Road. Atlanta Gas Light is going to be constructing a new gas line from Riverdale, boring under I-75 and going to points north, a portion of which will cross a corner of our property in the form of an easement. Following Fred Rohrbach s presentation to the June Council/Session meeting of AGL s easement notification, members of the Council met with Larry Hand, AGL s land agent, to walk the line and voice our concerns about the number of our old trees which would be destroyed and value of the property which would be damaged. Mr. Hand carried our concerns back to AGL and we came to a mutual agreement resulting in Philadelphia s being paid $11,380 for use of the easement and damages to property. They also agreed to move the easement a little further to the west which will save those trees. The gas line project should be completed by the end of At the Council/Session meeting held July 15, Spencer shared a brief synopsis of the happenings of the 220 th General Assembly held in Pittsburgh June 30 through July 7. He has a handout which he shared and which, I m sure, he would make available to any of you who would like a copy. Pat Randolph and Emory Pearce have been elected to represent the Council on the Elder Nominating Committee to serve along with two members from the congregation to be elected August 19 and a representative from Presbyterian Women. If you are asked to be on this committee, please prayerfully consider serving. The Nominating Committee will then present a slate to be voted on at the Congregational Meeting in September. The Clerk s Committee has reviewed Philadelphia s By-Laws and suggested changes to comply with new Book of Order/Form of Government. New By-Laws will also be presented at the August 19 meeting for vote in September. Please keep our church and officers in your prayers that we will continue to try to discern and follow the will of God. Lynn Vandiver Clerk of Session PW Message Corner...
