2 Notes from the Pastor s Pen... I find it hard to believe that February is upon us. The older I get, the faster time seems to fly. January was filled with many meaningful events. Tom and I celebrated 25 years of marriage on January 2. It was a quiet celebration with dinner and a movie well, two movies. You know how I like movies! We will continue the celebration in a few days on a Smooth Jazz Cruise. Almost as important as this momentous anniversary was the fact that I completed Course of Study at St. Paul School of Theology. It was a busy week, and there was a lot to learn, but I am finished. I am considering what to do next as there is more education I can receive, but for the rest of this year, I am done. I don t know what the future holds and what my next step is at this point, but I am grateful for your prayers, love, and support during these last four years. I am also grateful for God s grace as I relearned how to write papers and study. Now that January is behind us, it is of course, time to look towards Lent. It is interesting to note that Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, which is also Valentine s Day. It is also interesting to note that Easter is on April 1, April Fool s Day. I wonder when was the last time that happened. I guess I could google it, but I m not that curious. I m especially excited about Easter because of all the possibilities for sermon material. Speaking of sermons, I m excited about our Lenten worship. The Worship Team and I are working on a meaningful experience for all of you. You can read more about it elsewhere in this newsletter. Pastor s Notes (Cont.) I hope you ll join me during these weeks of Lent. It is sure to be a meaningful six weeks, and I want you to share this special season with one another. I ll look for you in church! --Pastor Vonda Clothing/Household Items Fundraiser Delivery Saturday, February 3 Begin Loading at Presbyterian Campus 8:30 a.m. Our clothing/household items fundraiser storage space is full, and we need to make a run to the donation center in Lacey, Washington. We are scheduled to make a delivery on Saturday, February 3 between 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. Many hands will make the job go faster. So, if you are available to help load or if you have a truck and/or a trailer and would like to make the drive up to Lacey, please let us know. There will be help in Lacey for the unloading. Please call Sue Coulombe at or send an to coulombe2@q.com if you can help. Okay, I was curious enough. I googled it, and 1945 was the last year Lent started on Valentine s Day and ended on April Fool s.

9 A Poem-Prayer for Lent (Author Unknown) Marked by ashes we step out in to the wilderness, Marked by our failures, Marked by our mortality, Marked by the ashy dust that reminds us of the fires and pains that we have felt in our lives, Marked by the cross that gathers all of our ash up to You. We follow You out to the wild wilderness, We leave behind our comfort, our familiar, our safety, We leave behind our notions of self-sufficiency, We leave behind our rightness and our righteousness. We know that the wilderness is not safe. In the wilderness between Egypt and the Promised Land, the Israelites experienced fatigue, frustration, and despair. They turned to complaint and anger. In the wilderness after being cast out by Sarah and Abraham, Hagar watched in anguish as her son began to perish and she could not save him. In this wilderness, a hungry and thirsty Jesus encountered temptation, Temptation of self-sufficiency, Temptation of power, Temptation of wealth and prestige, Temptations to take the easy way out, to act as though God does not exist or as though God lays no claim on our actions. The wild and dangerous temptations, frustrations, and despairs lurk in wait for us in the wilderness. We meet them each step of this journey. But we know God waits for us in the wilderness too. Bread from heaven rains down to feed us so that we are strengthened for the journey, God leads us to previously undiscovered sources of water that cool the scorching heat, Jesus reminds us that temptations do not mean failure but instead opportunity to re-discover God and ourselves. We meet in the wilderness the wild grace of God that reminds us why we choose to go into the wilderness, So that we can meet God again anew, So that we may be changed by the grace that we experience afresh, So that at the end of 40 days, when our journey of Lent is over, we can walk out of the dead wilderness singing with our whole lives: "God is alive!" "Ashes turn to new life!" "Come, and rise from the dead! Come, and live in the grace of Easter!"
