Adams Blvd., Los Angeles The 93 rd Annual National Association of Negro Musician Convention July 29, 2012 thru August 1, 2012 Dallas Texas Dear Members of GLB: Preparing NANM For The Next 100 Years Our 93 rd annual national convention was not a norm but was a constitutional convention. Its purpose was to update the constitution and by-laws moving us into the 21 st century. It also included whether NANM would hold annual conventions or biannual conventions. After voting, the general consensus was to continue meeting annually AMEN! There was lots of work consisting of seven sessions encompassing fourteen proposed amendments over a three-day period. Additional events included one workshop entitled I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings, The William Warfield Master Class with baritone Donnie Ray Albert as clinician, and three evening concerts. We witnessed a time of oneness between us that we have never experienced at prior conventions. There was much joy as a result of prayers and thanksgiving to God. Other than myself, additional members of the GLB in attendance were Mrs. Dorothy Hayes, Ms. Henrietta Fortson, Mrs. Danellen Joseph, Mrs. Judith Baity and Mrs. Barbara Cole. There were 166 members attending the convention this year. The 2012 NANM National Scholarship Competition (this year string instruments was the discipline) resulted in the 1 st place scholarship award being won by EdKelly Sanford representing the Rocky Mountain Region, 2 nd place winner was Curtis Stewart representing the Eastern Region, 3 rd place won by Lewis Eichelberger who represented the Southern Region, 4 th place winner was Kyle Dickson representing the Central Region and the Western Region was represented by Rosalind Ashia Darbeau, the 5 th place winner. Next year the convention will be convened in Nashville, Tennessee. May God Bless, Mamie Henry, President

Member Prayers & Concerns: Corinne Howe Ball, Kurcena Ball, Meryl Hinkle, Vennie Johnson, Geraldine Jones, Gloria Lindsay, Jennifer Lindsay, Sandra Wheeler The Bowers Family Has Moved On: The GLB members are saddened at the passing of Kris and Keeland Bowers grandfather. We extend our heart-felt condolences and prayers to the entire Bowers family. Kris is a past winner of the GLB Scholarship Competition; and Keeland is one of the 1st place winners of the 2012 GLB Scholarship Competition. We were also saddened at the passing of Gladys Jackson, the first AfricanAmerican to win a Ford Scholarship as well as first African-American to play at Carnegie Hall. She was a long-time member of NANM s Edna Hammett Porter Branch and was Western Region Director Arvis Jones piano coach. We also extend our heart-felt condolences and prayers to the entire Jackson family. ICYOLA Ends Season with Major Triumph Congratulation on a most fabulous A Season Ending Concert presented at Walt Disney Concert Hall on July 8th. The near capacity audience at was absolutely spellbound at the quality of these young musicians, and spent a lot of time on their feet giving the performers and performances many standing ovations. Maestro Charles Dickerson s dedicated, hard work with these talented middle school through high school students certainly bore delicious fruit this afternoon. Jordan Busa, Ferre Hodges, Katherine Eason, Rachel St. Marseille and Jade Johnson were all exceptional soloists. Their debut performances, both with ICYOLA and in Disney Hall, will be a major feather in their caps as they gain more experience and recognition on their respective roads toward what I think will be internationally acclaimed careers in the world or music. Charles Dickerson s mentoring and guiding of all these young people (4 of them were 12 years old) will translate to a much better world for all of us. This young organization, founded in 2009, is sent heartfelt congratulations and appreciation, by the GLB membership, for what is being accomplished with these talented and deserving youth in the underserved communities in the Greater Los Angeles Area. Hopefully, the communities being served by Mr. Dickerson s dedication will continue to encourage their youth to aspire to what was seen and heard at Walt Disney Hall on Sunday July 8, Additional Accolades for Annelle Gregory Annelle K. Gregory, a 1st place winner of the 2012 Georgia Laster Branch Scholarship Competition, 1st place winner in the 2012 Jester Hairston Competition and who received a scholarship award from the League of Allied Arts, recently won a gold medal plus additional prizes in the 2012 National NAACP ACT-SO Competition. She will perform at the 150th Anniversary Emancipation Proclamation Concert, Sept. 22nd at AT&T Center Theatre. The GLB proudly congratulates Annelle on her continued success, and anticipates hearing and reading more about her future outstanding accomplishments.

Bryant at: jimsings@sbcglobal.net If you do not have access, contact James via telephone at: (661) Gloria Lindsay Interviewed Online International TV Show Tuesday, July 3 rd, Gloria Lindsay, GLB Scholarship Committee Co-chair, Essence Award Recipient, Motivational Speaker and author of five books, was the invited guest on the Online Spirit Talk Live Television Show, hosted by Rabbi Wayne Dosick. The interview focused on the sacred works written by Gloria. She read and discussed selected inspirational poetry and prayers from her books Connections with Spirit, Guided by Spirit and Sacred Prayers Volume One. Gloria also recounted the amazing story of daughter, Jennifer, who lost oxygen at birth, how she taught her to read words at eight months, read books, independently at 2 ½ years of age. She also discussed with Rabbi Dosick the techniques she used to stimulate her daughter neurologically, physically and mentally which are elaborated on in her book Triumph over Trauma: Learning Begins at Infancy. For more information on Gloria s writings and books visit her website GLB Scholarship Award Winner Kris Bowers Advances On The GLB family is very proud to announce that Kris Bowers, one of our past GLB Scholarship Award winners, earned his Masters in Music Degree at Julliard School of Music in May of this year. He is a gifted keyboard artist. We heartily congratulate him on this major milestone in his life and career. A Special Request of GLB Members, Patrons and Friends Many of you took advantage of the opportunity to witness the exciting and excellent performance presented Sunday, July 8 th at Walt Disney Hall by the Inner City Youth Orchestra of Los Angeles and its guest soloists, under the musical direction of Maestro Charles Dickerson. Great! The opportunity to, again, be mesmerized and thrilled by the ICYOLA in collaboration with internationally acclaimed counter-tenor Darryl Taylor is being prepared for presentation at 7:00 PM on Friday, October 19, 2012 at Wilshire United Methodist Church. This concert is a fundraiser to further the Georgia Laster Branch mission of providing opportunities for the talented youth within the underserved communities in the Greater Los Angeles Area through its annual GLB Scholarship Competition and performance opportunities through its Spotlight On Youth Program, Annual Negro Spiritual Concert and Annual Memorial Concert.
