Featuring: Mike Hamann, General Sales Manager Mike Hamann, a general sales manager with the Quad City Radio Group, will speak to the Bettendorf Rotary about the group's six stations. The Radio Group's stations represent a broad swath from the popular music spectrum, comprehensive sports coverage, health, home improvement, inspirational, legal, financial and political views. On one recent afternoon, play lists at the music stations included such diversity as: WLLR: Today's Country, 103.7: "How Long" by the Eagles, Carrie Underwood's "So Small" and "Winner at a Losing Game" by Rascal Flatts. WFXN 1230: Fox Sports Radio covers the full sports alphabet: NFL, NHL, NBA, NASCAR - and Iowa State Sports. WOC 1420: Talk Radio provides news summaries; general-interest features and conservative talk radio, from Paul Harvey and Rush Limbaugh to Sean Hannity and Jim Fischer. 3 Meeting Review Noon, Jan 9, 2007, the Fortune Garden. Presiding: President Lisa Brown. Lisa opened the meeting accompanied by Bernie Vogel on the piano in The National Anthem, then paused for a moment of reflection for world peace and fellowship and for those noted by the membership who are having a tough time. Frank Mitvalsky noted his brother who faces ear surgery, Jon Ryan mentioned a suffering co-worker, Ron Essner remembered our troops. Bernie s pre-meeting piano serenade featured Scott Joplin s Entertainer, It Had to Be You, Tootsie Wootsie and led off with R-O-T-A-R-Y. Tom Howard led our Less Unmentionable than Usual Chorus in Bye Bye Blackbirds, Sing Out a Song of Rotary and Let There Be Peace On Earth. Carter LeBeau presented President Lisa the banner of the East-Moline / Silvis Illinois Rotary club, the only other QCA Rotary that preserves the Rotarian Singing Tradition. He also prepared a photo exhibit of our annual Holiday Party, inviting the members to take the many duplicate photos on display there. 6 Today s program was introduced by President Lisa Brown. Mr. Gary Asay Current Past President Illinois Pork Producers Association The Pork Industry: Producing More Than Just The Other White Meat So capable was Mr. Asay s sketch of his industry s history, economic contributions to universities and the state s economy, challenges and future directions, the membership s further wide ranging questions and Gary s detailed answers ended only due to time pressures. This short newsletter space doesn t fairly express Gary s comprehensive talk. Gary reported due to remarkable advances in genetic science, mainly crediting industry co-sponsored research at land-grant universities, not only is the pork tenderloin of today as lean as chicken breast, but from birth to bacon takes merely six months! 10 years ago, a sow might produce a litter of 15 pigs per year; today each produces 22 to 23. When asked whether this increase came from growth enhancing medicines injected into the animals which might find their way into us through our food, Gary was quick to point out the gains were entirely the consequences of advances in genetics; the animal s remarkable productivity comes about naturally. Mr. Asay noted that beyond science, a great deal of credit must go to the greatly skilled, highly educated, modern husbandry specialist farmers and intensive sanitation, odor near-elimination, fertilizer production without pollution and intensive disease control practices. Whereas in the past, among a farmers many products there would be also pigs, generally raised in a combination indoor-outdoor setting today one finds farmers have secure indoor settings that specialize in genetic development, still others who only produce piglets for sale, and still others that only raise purchased piglets to market weight according to the specific requirements of particular customers. As pork production uses 10% of the nation s corn crop, and 10% of the nation s soybean crop, current feed price pressures exist due particularly to higher corn prices as ethanol plants will pay any price necessary to keep in full operation. Faced with resistance to higher prices at the grocery store, many smaller and less advanced producers are exiting the pork industry altogether. Jan 9, 2008, Page 6 of 6
