2 Dr. Cook Nominated as 2015 CBF Moderator We are pleased to share the news that our pastor, Matt Cook, has been nominated as the Moderator-Elect for the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship (CBF). It is quite an honor to be asked to serve in this capacity. If elected, Matt will serve as the Moderator of the national body in 2015, CBF s 25th anniversary year. Matt has been deeply involved in CBF life for many years and currently serves on the CBF Governing Board. He will bring enthusiasm, vision and a continued commitment to the missional focus that has shaped CBF life in recent years. Matt s nomination to this highly esteemed position is a recognition of his own gifts and abilities and is an honor for First Baptist Church. The election will take place at the CBF General Assembly in Atlanta, GA later this month. What Does It Mean to Be a Missional Church? As I write this, I m sitting in the Atlanta airport waiting to catch a plane to South Africa. As I write this, we have a team of more than twenty-five college students down in the Bahamas being the hands and feet of Christ. As I write this, the finishing touches are being put on our Mission Possible Day where we ll spread out over Wilmington and share God s love in a variety of places. But as wonderful as those things are, the best way you can tell how missional our church is becoming isn t by the number of events we plan, but the number of people we unleash to carry out God s mission every day; at work, at school, at play, at home. That s because our church isn t primarily the budget and organized activities that we organize but the loving witness we give about God and Jesus Christ everywhere we go. So while I hope you pray for us as we go to serve in far away places, know that the impact you can make right here is just as important. Let s all join God in His mission to put the world back together, one person at a time. College Missionaries Do Great Work in Bimini Twenty Six college students went on mission to Homestead, Florida and to the little island community of Bailey Town, Bimini during the last 10 days of May. Our first mission project was to help lead after school tutoring and creative arts at Open House, which is a CBF mission location. That night we led a worship service for the teenagers of Open House. The next day we sailed 50 miles across the Gulf Stream to Bimini. The college students worked with the Mt Zion Baptist Church leading a Vacation Bible School and painting their fellowship hall, Sunday School building and two bathrooms. They also led a Thursday night worship service for the church. A great time of fellowship happened after the service as we enjoyed a church-wide meal. Any time you go on mission in a foreign country and in a different culture, God has many opportunities to mold and make you into the image of Jesus. OUR VISION: To become a community of believers that is open and welcoming to anyone, no matter where they are on their faith journey, and is intentionally joining with Christ in his redemptive work and purposes in the world. OUR MISSION: To become, and help others to become, fully devoted followers of Jesus Christ. Be Curious. God May be Trying to Get Your Attention If you didn t know, our very own Jayne Davis writes for the Associated Baptist Press Blog as the Spiritual Formation Blogger. Her new article, Hearing God s Voice Through the Clamor is now posted! Read it now by visiting Discernment doesn t just happen. We have to get ready for it. Be curious. Pay attention to patterns. Come out of the cave. Know who you are. God wants to lead you, and he will persist until you are able to hear.

Josh is in the 4th grade and has been a part of our church family all of his life. His parents are Michelle and Mike Stine. Nicole Pearson Nicole Pearson has joined us by completing the First Friends Connections Class. She and her four year old daughter Emery has been worshipping with us for over a year. Nicole works at PPD and was introduced to First Baptist by Jennifer Tuttle and other members of our church that work at PPD. Cherrie Pridgen Cherrie Pridgen has transferred her church membership to our fellowship from a sister church in the city. She has lived in Wilmington much of her life and has a number of friendships in our church. Having completed our First Friends Connections Class, she has made new friends with others in the class and looks forward to becoming engaged in the various ministries of our church. Joyce Caffee We are happy to welcome Joyce Caffee to our church as she has joined us by transfer of her membership from Southport Baptist Church. Joyce has been worshippingwith us for the past couple of years as her son, Ray Caffee, and daughter-in-law, Brittany, and their two sons are also part of our congregation. Joyce is retired and enjoys having plenty of time to enjoy being with her family, especially her grandsons, Beckett and Wyatt. FBC Was the Salt in Wilmington for Mission Possible Day The theme for the 2014 Mission Possible Day was SALT FOR THE CITY. On Saturday, May 31, over 100 First Baptist members spent the morning sharing the love of God with our Wilmington community being that Salt. We had three mission project locations: Alderman Elementary School, PORTIA ( an inner-city after school program) and our downtown FBC campus. At Alderman, their street side sign was painted, courtyard was pressure washed and many classrooms were given a loving touch. At PORTIA, a home make-over transformation took place. A new porch roof was installed, all outside woodwork and windows were painted, three new ceiling fans and a new screen door were installed, a 20 x 30 concrete basketball court was poured and three new window air conditioner units were installed. It was hard to count how many flowers were planted. Lee Hines, the director of PORTIA, was overjoyed with the give your life away effort that was given to her ministry. The downtown FBC campus has never looked better. Beautiful bedding plants were planted along with the re-installation of our historical sign which has been missing since our steeple was knocked down in the hurricane. Overall, all the glory goes to God who blessed us by allowing us to be a blessing to our community. Thank you to everyone who helped make this day such a success!

6 Bless a Guatemalan Family with 1 Month of Food,On July 24th FBC will be sending a team of 40 folks to Guatemala to share the love and hope of Jesus through the building of houses, the sharing of laughter and smiles, and the distribution of food to over 100 families. Through the generous support of our FBC family, most of the costs for the 16 houses that we will build on this trip have been covered. There is still opportunity, however, to sponsor one of the 116 food baskets that will be distributed. Each food basket contains a month s supply of staples for a family of 4. The cost to provide a food basket is $8. Checks can be made out to FBC. Write Guatemala Food Basket in the memo. Whether we go in person or through the prayer and financial support that we give, we are all a part of the work that God is doing in Guatemala and around the world. 7 Special Business Conference Set for July 13th On Sunday morning, July 13, 2014, the church will hold a Special Called Business Meeting at the conclusion of both the 8:50am and 11am worship services. During this time of business, the church will consider the following items: A) Amendments to the Constitution The Diaconate has approved and will be recommending that the church approve three changes and amendments to the constitution. A summary of these three changes and amendments are as follows: 1) Article VII, Section 2, H. The number of Personnel Committee members will be increased from 6 members to 9 members. This will enable the committee to more effectively do its work. 2) Article VII, Section 2, K. This change will no longer require the Administrative Council to meet prior to business meetings, but rather at the request of the pastor or the current chairperson of the diaconate. Functionally, the administrative council does not need to meet prior to every business conference 3) Article VII, Section 4, B. The changes made to this section seek to clarify the role, scope and organizational structure of the WMU. It seeks to clarify the relationship between the WMU and Women on Mission. The proposed language of this section will recognize that WMU is the parent organization of Women on Mission. B) Nominations For Personnel Committee The above constitutional changes will create additional members to the Personnel Committee. Upon approval of the above changes to the constitution, the nominating committee will be recommending three persons to fill these slots. We will publicize those nominations in the Order of Worship beginning on Sunday, June 22nd. C) Trustee Authority to Establish Housing Allowance each year For Retired Ministers A recommendation will be made to give the FBC Wilmington trustees the authority to designate at any time and from time to time a housing allowance for retired ministers.
