2 Lamplighter Rev. Eric Powell, Interim Pastor Ohio United Presbyterian Church November 2010 website: Dear Friends, Sunday worship 8:30 am & 11:00 am Sunday School for all ages 9:45 am Daylight Savings Time Ends November 7th Change your clocks! Elders of the Month: Patti Strominger Lynn Smith lynn Deacon of the Month: Nancy Hribar The Church Office is open from 8 am-1pm Monday thru Friday You may have noticed a subtle yet distinct change in the life of the congregation over the course of the past year or so in regards to diminished attendance during the worship services. While there may be various reasons and factors that have come into play to cause this trend, there is no simple fix or solution. It is merely the present reality and decisions need to be made and implemented in order to hopefully move forward in a healthy way. The Worship Committee and the Session have been aware of this for some time, have made some adjustments earlier in the year and have recently decided to make some more in the new year. After several months of consideration by the Worship Committee and the Session, the decision has been made to have just one worship service, starting January 2, 2011, with Sunday School at 9:00 a.m. and Worship at 10:00 a.m. Some of the reasons behind this decision and these times are the following: An uncomfortable sense of being disconnected from one another due to the two services, which can be disconcerting in a congregation of this size Due to the many sports and family activities in which people participate on Sundays, it is hoped that these mid-morning times will encourage families to attend Sunday School and Worship more frequently Many folks are on a schedule for most of the week that requires them to get up early and thus mid-morning times such as these make more sense to their lifestyles A 10:00 a.m. worship time is believed to be a fair compromise between the 8:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. services The Session realizes that not everyone may like this decision or appreciate the changes involved, and I can assure you that this decision was not made lightly or quickly. This decision, though, is made in what is believed to be the best interest of the church at this time and given the present circumstances. Further, it was decided to wait on implementing this until the new year yet announce it now in order to give you the opportunity to consider this before we get too busy with the upcoming Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me. In Christ s Love, Rev. Powell 2

3 Report on the Meetings of the Congregation and Corporation On Sunday, October 24, 2010 after the eleven o clock worship service, concurrent meetings of the Corporation and Congregation were held to discuss and vote upon adopting new By-Laws which would merge the duties of the Board of Trustees into the Session. After narrowly securing a quorum, the meetings were held with Rev. Powell Moderating the discussion and Chairman of the Corporation Elder John Martin Moderating the voting. There was much discussion and after amending the proposed By-Laws to increase the Session back to twelve again, the new By-Laws were adopted, effective January 1, The Corporation Meeting then continued with the election of Corinna Petrella as an Auditor, the other election of officers being moot since the adoption of the new By-Laws. The Congregational Meeting then continued with the election of Jeff Barth, Eric Nan, and Lynn Smith to the Class of 2013 on the Session and Bev Abate, Karen Barth, Nancy Hribar, and Barbara Tackac to the Class of 2013 on the Board of Deacons. Due to the Session going back to twelve members in size, and to the attrition that has occurred, there is at present the need for two more Elders to be elected yet-one to the Class of 2012 and another to the Class of If you are contacted by a member of the present Nominating Committee, please prayerfully consider serving. Chuck & Janice Adamski and Wayne & Sarah Jane Shaffer were elected to serve as representatives to Christians United of Beaver County. Those elected from the Congregation to serve on the Nominating Committee for 2011 are: Chuck Adamski, Dorothy Elko, Nancy Glatz, Wayne Shaffer, and Jim Young. Two Elders from the Session, to be determined at the Stated Meeting of January 2011, and a Deacon will round out the Nominating Committee for next year. This group will be the ones to nominate the members of the Pastor Nominating Committee when it becomes time next year to do that, as well as to nominate officers in the Fall for the ensuing year. So, please keep them in prayer, for they have their work cut out for them in 2011! Copies of the official By-Laws are available in the narthex of the church. Official Minutes from this Congregational Meeting will be available at the Annual Congregational Meeting in January. 3

4 Imagine the Impact that Americans of faith could have on the future of our nation, the character of its leadership and the moral health of its people if we all applied biblical principles to every aspect of our lives-including our participation in the democratic process. -Focus on the Family ELECTION DAY IS NOVEMBER 2ND! Just one vote... In 1649 one vote gave Oliver Cromwell control of England. In 1649 one vote caused Charles I of England to be executed. In 1776 one vote gave America the English language instead of German. In 1845 one vote brought Texas into the Union. In 1868 one vote saved President Andrew Johnson from impeachment. In 1876 one vote gave Rutherford B. Hayes the presidency of the United States. In 1876 one vote changed France from a monarchy to a republic. And in 1923 one vote gave Adolf Hitler the leadership of the Nazi party. Your one vote counts just as much! All Saints Day-November 1 Election Day-November 2 Daylight-Saving Time ends- November 7 Veterans Day-November 11 Christ the King Sunday-November 21 National Bible Week-November Thanksgiving Day-November 25 First Sunday of Advent-November 28 Flag Retirement The Boy Scout troops in our area are collecting worn, tattered American flags that are no longer in good enough condition to be displayed.
