Summer has officially begun? Where did the first half of the year go? They say time flies when your having fun but it also goes quickly when your working...a lot. Working more, with less, for less so we can get back to those better days. Watching how each month tallies up in the visitor count and doing everything we can to make the next month better than the last, while making adjustment in how we do our business, even when the game changes along the way. For the many Skalleagues, shaping the tourist industry over the years have always meant keeping up with the changes, good years following the bad and then get ready to go around again. While everyone is working hard and watching the time fly by...one thing is for sure Lucky we live Hawaii. Hawai`i No E Ka `Oi It is always easier to interest someone in something you believe in, something that is dear to your heart. When we travel we can t wait to come home. When a visitor leaves they can t wait to return. Sharing Hawaii with the rest of the world is what we do. We will continue to work hard. We will continue to go through the steps and changes that need to be made to ensure each of our successes. Time will go by in a flash and it will be Christmas before you know it. Not ready okay I ll slow it down. Continued on page 2
2 Continued from page 1 Being part of Skal International Hawaii has certainly given us the opportunity to talk with members about their hardships as well as their successes. The sharing of ideas is all part of doing business among friends. While our businesses have taken so much of our time, don t forget to take time for Skal. Not only to participate in the meetings but to get active in bringing in a new member. There is value and there is a return on ensuring that Skal Hawaii is around in the years to come. Also Skal meetings are fun! So when fun joins in with working a lot,...the time goes even quicker. Merry Christmas! Aloha & SKAL A room with a view at the Top of the I at Sarento s The May meeting was like a Skal family feast at one long table with everyone having a fabulous evening. Did I mention the view? Did I mention the fabulous time had by all? Make a point of joining in on our Skal meetings! See you soon!
3 A special mahalo to Valerie Davis for all her efforts on re-establishing the photo history of Skal Hawaii. Lots of photos of the many members over many years! Who s that?
4 In Memory of Jim Power Secretary General of Skal International As your SI President, and first of all as your Skålleague, I regret to have to inform you, personally deeply shaken, of the tragic news that our dear friend, Jim Power, the Secretary General of Skål International has left us forever. Jim lived for Skål International with his whole being throughout his life. There is so little I can say about such a tragic event other than Skål will not be the same without Jim, he had been Secretary General since January 1993 and will be missed so much by all of us. I am sure we will never forget him and that his actions will unite us and make us stronger in the idea that I have inaugurated as the president: Living the true spirit of Skål which was also the motto of Jim s life. My condolences go to his family and staff at the General Secretariat who had all worked with him for many years. Dear Jim, may you rest in peace. Nik Racic President Skål International It is with shock and great sadness that we, Jim's family, have learnt of his untimely death in Torremolinos. Reading the many heartfelt tributes to him as a person and a Skalleague is a great consolation to us. It is wonderful to know that he was so highly thought of in so many spheres by so many people. We are proud that he served Skal so well and we know he enjoyed every minute of his time with the organization and believed in what he was doing. We would like to reach out to his colleagues in the Skal Office and to his many Skalleagues everywhere, united as we are in grief. On behalf of Rita Power, Jim's mother, his brother, Denis and his sisters, Patricia Boyd and myself, Anne O'Brien and his extended family circle, I thank you all for your tributes to him at this very sad time for us. He lived a good and useful life and may he be an inspiration to us all to live well in the future. Anne O Brien, Jim s sister The memorial mass for Jim Power will be held at the church of Nuestra Señora Madre del Buen Consejo, in Torremolinos, Spain, on Tuesday 6 July 2010 at 8.30 p.m. Jim was a good friend to all and he will be missed. Skal International Hawaii sends its sympathies, prayers and Aloha to the family. Young Skal is getting closer to becoming a reality! The first charter group s applications have been approved by SIUSA and we are awaiting SI s final approval. We will put the names to these smiling faces soon. We are looking forward to getting to know each and everyone of them!
