The Corner Stone Page 2 Farewell Blessing In the year 2000 I went back to worship at the Presbyterian Church of Ballston Spa, New York on the Sunday when the congregation was celebrating the 100 th birthday of a woman that Sue, Jane and I called Gramma Mary. It was my first time back since leaving as their pastor in 1987 to move to Utica. It was strange returning after 13 years, but there were lots of old familiar faces. I went up to a woman (let s call her Alice ), a widow, who had been a concert violinist in her youth a career cut short by an accident that left her hand crippled a woman who was serving as a deacon when I was pastor and with whom I had often taken communion to the homebound. I greeted her warmly and told her how good it was to see her again and chit-chatted pleasantly before worship began. At coffee hour after worship, another church member from the old days came up to me and chuckled, saying, Alice came to me after you greeted her and asked me, Who was that man?! The most fitting way for me to compose my final Pastor s Corner would be for me to name each of you and write about what you have meant to me, to bless you one by one and by name at our parting as the Apostle Paul did at the end of his Letter to the Romans. Of course, that would require a significant chunk of paper for each printing of this issue of The Corner Stone! Not a practical plan. Midge Bakos has so appropriately reminded us of the great story of this church in which we have shared ministry for the 3,043 times we have gone around the sun together since you called me here on March 1, She notes that I am the 20 th pastor in a line that began in the 18 th Century with the Rev. Asahel Norton. Were it not for Midge s efforts, little would be remembered of those who came and went before. Indeed, no one who was a member here more than 70 years ago (when Midge came as a youth) remains today, and few who are members today will be here 70 years hence. Yet (one hopes) Stone Church will maintain a witness well into 2085 and beyond. One thing we know: that the future of Stone Church though continuous with its past will be different from the church it is today. Pastors come and pastors go, but church goes on. T H E P A S T O R S Like General MacArthur, I ve been fading away since the beginning of the year. Being full time part of the time (it turns out) is a disappearing act. Donna Goodfriend stopped by the church recently, saw me in my study, and exclaimed, What are you doing here? But I am so pleased that our idea of handing off ministerial responsibility to our Commissioned Ruling Elder, Scott Leonard, has gone so smoothly. I have enjoyed being part of a pastoral team these past six months, and I know you will be blessed with Scott s ongoing ministry. Believe me, you have in Scott a rare abundance of gifts. He really does epitomize and embody the promise that all of us who are ordained to service in the Presbyterian Church make ministers, ruling elders and deacons to serve the people with energy, intelligence, imagination and love. I want you to know that you all have been such a blessing to me these 3,043 days. And so I will conclude this concluding valediction with a promise to pray for you always: that you may be blessed in order to continue to be a blessing and that we may all experience by God s grace Deepeace, C O R N E R

Page 3 The Corner Stone The Pastor s Corner Scott Leonard A time to every purpose under heaven For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven the Teacher (or Preacher) writes in Ecclesiastes 3. In April 2006 over nine years ago! the Pastor Nominating Committee (PNC), of which I was the chair, met for the first time. Ten months later after much searching, in our recommendation we concluded: In summary, with his 27 years in the ministry, his energy and creativity for worship, his deep passion for the scripture, his liturgical knowledge, his musical skills, his world-renown biblical story-telling ministry, his enthusiasm and inspirational leadership, the PNC believes God has called Reverend Dennis Dewey for us and we whole-heartedly recommend calling Reverend Dewey as our Designated Pastor. T H E P A S T O R S The session, the congregation, and the presbytery agreed. And the years since have only further underscored that prescient view. Designated Pastor meant he was a pastor for a designated period of time. In our case initially it was 2 years and 4 months, which was fine with Dennis because after 14 years on the road he wasn t sure he wanted an extended pastoral stay. Still, with a Designated Pastor there was the option to become an installed pastor which he became in April (I think we kind of grew on him.) Now at the end of June 2015 he officially retires and leaves us after 8 1/3 years. It s hard to summarize what his time with us has meant. I have not met another pastor as strong in liturgy (his major at seminary), as musically inclined (besides singing, and playing the piano, he has written or scored well over a dozen hymns all of which we have sung!), and as gifted a storyteller (and I ve heard the best). We have truly been blessed with his talents. And yet, that s not what he has meant to us. While our membership has not grown in numbers as any of us would have liked, it has grown exponentially in spirit through the Spirit. Before Dennis came we were a church deeply divided, literally in half. We were a broken community, more focused on doing church in our own little subgroups rather than being church as a body of faith. Dennis led us through the healing, helping us to see what it truly meant to have our actions centered around God, so that we kept our eyes on the prize: the grace of God. In Matthew 25 Jesus tells the Parable of the Talents. Back in the day a talent was a unit of measure for gold, but the word talent evolved to mean having a special skill or ability. And Dennis has indeed helped us to develop our talents so that today he can leave knowing that we are one body as we may never have been before, ready to face the challenges ahead of us with nothing to fear because God abides in us and we in him. And on that day when he comes before the Master and the Master sees how Dennis multiplied the talents given to him, the Master will say to him, Well done, good and faithful servant! Enter into the joy of your Master! Deep Peace, C O R N E R

Page 4 The Corner Stone Historical Period Revisited A Glimpse into Stone Church s Past Part III The Pews A Source of Income for over 100 years Have you ever noticed a number at the end of your pew? Take a peek next time before you enter to worship. A few years ago someone might have even spoken to you that you were sitting in their pew. Pew rentals were the source of income until March 3, 1905 when the pledge system was incorporated to bring an end to the old New England use of pew rentals. After the Old White Meeting House that was built with the parishioners own hands, donated materials and completed in 1801, the pews were sold at auction to the highest bidder. The pew that brought the highest price was bid by Mr. Peleg Havens for $397, pew #2. The pews were square and each pew was able to seat eight to twelve persons. Because they were square a large part of the congregation sat with their backs to the minister. Rev. Norton often greeted the folks when walking down the center aisle bowing graciously right and left as he entered on his way to his lofty pulpit. The owner had absolute control of the pew. In New England, the owner could carpet or cushion it or paint any color he wished. In Clinton however, the owners were much more conservative and the pews were painted blue on the outside and left unpainted on the inside. One pew near the pulpit was reserved for aged and deaf persons and another for the family of the pastor. There was a high Blue Pew over the orchestra in the gallery and the Negro Pew on the east side of it. (With the abolition movement and action by the church deacons the Negro Pew wasn t included in the plans for the building of what we now call the Old Stone Church ). Church rentals ranged from $25 - $300 as the way to fund church expenses. It has been noted that occasionally a member might bid off a corner of a costly pew to another parishioner. Each member filled out a pew slip number and agreed to pay the Treasurer of the Society a certain amount. One half of the agreed amount was to be paid by the first day of December and one half by the first day of June. In the Clinton Courier sometimes a notice was printed that those in arrears at Stone Church should pay the church treasurer as soon as possible. You were assigned a pew corresponding to the slip number. Some pews remained with a family for generations. Today the pews are not in any particular order numerically because the pews have been shuffled around a few times especially during the Project 2000 era when they were completely removed for renovation to make a center aisle and the outside aisles were made much wider. Some pews made their way to the attic and others to other rooms of the church building. I would be really surprised if anyone would say to me, Say, you re in my pew! or That s my pew! After 110 years, pew rentals are over. 5 The Corner Stone Page 5 Credos Revisited One of the ideas coming out of a meeting of the Membership, Communication and Outreach Committee was to revive our credos that were started back in October 2007 and continued through the following year. Credo is the Latin word for I Believe. We re encouraging members to update or revise their past credos and to invite others to submit their own statements of faith to be published in the newsletter. The Credo can be any length but only needs to be a paragraph. Statements of faith from those who have not done so in the past would be most welcome. To do this you can draw on life experiences that have sustained you or struggles that may have shaped your life. Some questions that you might ask yourself are: How did you come by your faith? Were there mentors in your life along the way? How has God strengthened your faith? Were you brought up in a church environment? This month we present Bev Miller s credo. This I Believe Growing up in the Yorkville Presbyterian Church where I was baptized and married had a spiritual impact on my life. One of the reasons was my great grandfather, Robert Cooper, who was one of the founders of the church in After fighting in the Civil War and being imprisoned in the Andersonville Prison, he returned home after the war safely and wrote in his diary only by the grace of God did I survive. I wished I had known him personally but felt I knew him through his inspiring diary. His granddaughter, my mother, who I was blessed with as a mother, parent, and role model made certain that my sister and I were in Sunday School and church every Sunday. My father never attended church, but boasted how he had read the Bible twice through. My faith grew through my family every day while growing up. I moved to Clinton when I was married and attended Stone Church for a short time. Then when we moved to Westmoreland, we attended the Methodist Church and my children went to Sunday School. I came back to Stone Church in When my husband Bill passed away in 1999, I prayed for strength and courage every night to carry on with God s help. Since then I have been blessed with four grandchildren. God works in mysterious ways. When I was asked to play the organ for the last service of the Yorkville Presbyterian Church in 2003, I m sure my great-grandfather was looking down that day with sadness to see his home church close but he was also grateful and proud to see his great-granddaughter playing the organ. A Luncheon for Dennis Just a reminder..june 14 th will be the last Sunday Dennis will be preaching at Stone Church. We will be having a luncheon immediately after Church that Sunday downstairs in the dining room. We hope everyone will be able to attend. It will be a time of fellowship, conversation and sharing any memory you wish to share. It is difficult to imagine our Church without Dennis. But, we wish him nothing but the best and hope whatever he chooses to do in the future will be fulfilling to him. We can t thank him enough for all he has done for our Church. You will be missed, Dennis!!!!!

We were very successful in making $638, which will be used for our mission projects. The Women s Association Recipes wanted Please send them to stonepres@verizon.net or P.O. Box 33, Clinton or drop them in the offering plate during a Sunday service. Here s hoping everyone participates, so we can have lots of yummy recipes. See this month s recipe below - submitted by Emily Young YIELD: 40 truffles (approximately) Oreo Truffles INGREDIENTS: 1 lb. Oreo cookies (3 sleeves) 8 oz. cream cheese, room temperature 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract (using different extracts allows for subtle flavor changes...i ve used mint extract, upped to 1 tsp) (optional) 1 lb. milk chocolate 1/2 lb. white chocolate DIRECTIONS: 1. Using a food processor, grind cookies to a fine powder. With a mixer, blend cookie powder, cream cheese and vanilla extract until thoroughly mixed (there should be no white traces of cream cheese). 2. Roll into small balls and place on wax-lined cookie sheet. Refrigerate for 45 minutes. 3. Line two cookie sheets with wax paper. In double-boiler, melt milk chocolate. Dip balls and coat thoroughly. With slotted spoon, lift balls out of chocolate and let excess chocolate drip off. Place on wax-paper-lined cookie sheet. 4. In separate double boiler, melt white chocolate. Using a fork, drizzle white chocolate over balls. Let cool. 5. Store in airtight container, in refrigerator. Note: feel free to merely roll your truffles in a crushed topping of your choosing - chopped nuts, chocolate sprinkles, vari-colored candy sprinkles, crushed candy canes, cocoa powder, chocolate shavings, colored sugars, etc.

The Corner Stone Page 7 Blankets-Plus Sunday Father's Day, June 21, has been designated Blanket Sunday at Stone Church. Blanket Sunday is a Church World Service mission opportunity which enables us to directly support international disaster relief and CWS sponsored self-help programs throughout the world. Our Blanket Sunday donations go directly to help those in need and to address the root causes of the need. In actuality, our Father s Day gifts are truly about more than blankets: a better name would be "Blankets-Plus Sunday" since our contributions are used for blankets, tools, cleaning supplies, personal care items and so much more! The trouble spots in our world are numerous and Church World Service blankets and supplies can be found providing warmth and comfort in many of these spots. Most recently, CWS responded to the earthquake devastation in Nepal. A staggering number of people have no shelter, water or means of acquiring basic necessities. Church World Service has provided essentials for living including the lovely warm blankets that are purchased with our Blankets-Plus Sunday donations. Another facet of Blankets-Plus Sunday is the sharing of skills and the provision of essential tools for daily life and occupation. By providing opportunity and access to tools such as a hoe, a cultivator, a rake, a hammer, a saw, our funds enable Church World Service to assist people in becoming productive and self sufficient. Our donations on Sunday, June 21 are an example of our putting our faith into action. We, as God s people, are committed to improving the lives of people throughout the world. On Blanket Sunday, Father's Day, June 21, we get to affirm through our giving that we are all God's children. Please plan to add your affirmation through your gift on Blankets Plus Sunday. Thank you. Your Neighbors Meals Deadlines and thank-you. The timing for our Your Neighbors activity simply was not in step with the days necessary for The Corner Stone to be assembled, printed and delivered. Quite simply, we will be preparing meals for Your Neighbors on Saturday, May 30 which is too late for me to include a final tally in this June The Corner Stone. However, I certainly can thank you all in advance for the support you have already provided. We have promises of many nutritious home-cooked meals and willing volunteers who will meet in the dining room from 1-3 p.m. to assemble these packaged dinners. A hot, nutritious meal means so much to Your Neighbors clients. We tremendously appreciate your generosity and continuous support of this mission activity. Helping Hands Do you know someone who could use a Helping Hand? Lutheran Care Helping Hands Companions can come to your home to help with housekeeping, laundry, cooking, transportation and run errands while offering companionship. These paks are distributed June through August. We will focus on a particular item instead of putting a whole pak together. Our assignment is to donate granola bars or the equivalent. Let s see how many we can bring in May through July. Questions? Contact Judy LaGasse. No Cooking Necessary! Many thanks to all of the Stone Church members and friends who faithfully serve dinner each month at Hope House. Your efforts are greatly appreciated! 9 The Corner Stone Page 9 Deacons Corner HUGS Some days you just need a hug. A hug gives you the assurance that you are loved. We yearn for love and acceptance and look to family and friends to extend it to us. Sometimes they meet our expectations and other times they don t. While it is necessary to have people who will affirm us with words or affirmations or physical hugs, we must remember to look to the source of love and receive the hug from heaven. Always remember, God loves you more than you can imagine. Psalm 136:1 Give thanks to the Lord for he is good. His love endures forever. or 1 John 3:1 See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are. Everyone knows that the Church is a place where love ought to be manifested, and many people come to Church hoping to find a demonstration of love. I am grateful, that in our Church hugs seem to be a big part of greeting one another on Sunday mornings. We have all gone through wonderful times and times that have been very challenging. Many times in my life a simple hug made a world of difference!!! Always remember that a hug can help a person who is lonely, not feeling well or going through a difficult time to cope better knowing that someone cares!!! It is also important to show your love when someone is celebrating a wonderful happening in their life. I have a poem that I have had for many years which I will share with you. It was written by Dean Walley. HUGS It s wondrous what a hug can do. A hug can cheer you when you re blue. A hug can say. I love you so, or, Oh, I hate to see you go! A hug is Welcome back again! Great to see you! or Where ve you been? A hug can sooth a small child s pain And bring a rainbow after rain. The hug! There s no doubt about it, We scarcely could survive without it. A hug delights and warms and charms. It must be why God gave us arms!! As the above poem says a hug can say Oh, I hate to see you go! Therefore, on June 14 th there will be lots of hugs for Dennis as we thank him for his service with us at Stone Church and wish him well for the future. Now let s use our arms and hug someone today!!!!! The Deacons would like to give a special hug to Jim Gavett to thank him for his six years of service on the Board. He is missed. Hugs, Gil Adams, Mary Chamberlain, Emily Hughes, Gary LaGasse, Judy LaGasse, Bev Miller, Hal Rance, Linda Rance, Brooke Villiere & Emily Young. Check it out! Hope House has a new website which is now up and running. Check it out at and find a great deal of information about what a wonderful service Hope House provides for the people of Utica and the surrounding area. Hope House s Wish List This month s wish list includes the following: deodorant, coffee, small toothpaste, sugar, razors, prayers. Please leave items in the Norton Room. Questions? The Path at Sunset Hill was created to be a meditative outdoor environment that celebrates transformation, and to comfort those who are experiencing life changes. The Path weaves together many elements, including woods, open spaces, a bridge, a shelter and a labyrinth. The labyrinth is an ancient symbol that crosses all cultures and religions. It symbolizes a journey. Near the labyrinth is a small shelter. The floor of this shelter is composed of brick pavers, which can be engraved in commemoration of a special person, family or event. The funds raised by the sale of these pavers will provide for the continuing care of The Path and the cemetery itself. To purchase a celebratory or memorial paver please visit or write to Clinton Cemetery Association, Inc., PO Box 123, Clinton, NY
