1 Winterset-Patterson November, 2017 United Methodist Messenger Rev. Dr. Ronald Yarnell, Pastor Vision Statement: We seek to be a people who experience the transforming Church Phone #: or power of Jesus Christ and passionately desire to: Pastor s Phone: * Learn what Christ teaches Fax #: wintersetumc@msn.com * Live as Christ lives Facebook: wintersetumc@groups.facebook.com * Love as Christ loves Church website: So that, the world can experience the Kingdom Of God! Conference website: Mission Statement: The making of disciples of Jesus Christ Office Hours: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday 9:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. for the transformation of the world. Wednesday: 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m & 1:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m. United Methodist Messenger Communications: Jennifer Umbaugh Romans 3:28 For we hold that a person is justified by faith apart from works prescribed by the law. Roman 5:1 Therefore, since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ Are you interested in participating in a truly historic moment in Winterset? Who, me? Yes, you! Are you ready to celebrate the peace that we have with God by sharing the peace in worship with Christians of different traditions? Are you ready to celebrate God s goodness in a special worship service? If so, we have one planned for November! The celebration is called the Winterset Witness 500. Under the sponsorship of St. Paul Lutheran Church, First United Presbyterian Church, St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church and First United Methodist Church, all believers in the Lord Jesus Christ in the community are invited to join together to celebrate the Good News. The event will take place on Thursday, November 9, beginning at 7pm at St. Paul Lutheran Church. It is inspired by the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, instigated by Martin Luther in 1517 when he nailed up his 95 theses on what needed to be reformed in the Christian faith community. Bad habits had crept into the Church which, by the 16th century, could no longer be ignored. Yes, the resulting Reformation did shake things up. But it also revitalized the Church in its diverse expressions, preparing it to be effective witness in modern times. As a whole, Christianity is the largest spiritual movement in the world today and part of that continuing vitality has to do with the long term impact of the Reformation. Methodists may ask, If our tradition emerged a couple hundred years after Martin Luther, what does the Reformation have to do with us? Good question and it comes with a great answer. John Wesley s moment of truth, his heart strangely warmed, the Aldersgate experience in 1738, occurred while Wesley was listening to a reading of Luther s Preface to his commentary on the Epistle to the Romans. In the 18th century, the Methodist movement began by taking Reformation principles to the streets and fields like never before. All four congregations have leading parts to play in the service. Wait until you see the First United Methodist Church banner created by our Sewing Angels especially for use in the procession at the service! Among the other remarkable features will be Father Dan Kirby, parish priest of St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church as our preacher at the service. All and all, Winterset Witness 500 will be a truly historic moment for Winterset Christians and you are invited to be part of this positive event. Not a bad lead up to Thanksgiving, that is for sure! Grace and Peace, Pastor Ron Yarnell 1
