11 2001) Commandery of the State of Iowa 11 Past Commanders Association Memorial Service Prelate Donald Radloff We are gathered here to praise and honor those Sir Knights who have left this earthly home to join with the Knights who dwell in that heavenly mansion prepared for thy faithful followers from the foundation of this world. From the Sacred Volume, we are taught that our Redeemer lives and though worms destroy the body, yet in our flesh shall we see God. We read in the 23rd Psalm, The Lord is my shepherd, in the early morning the ancient shepherds lead his sheep to green grass and pure water. During the day we would protect the sheep from wild animals and tend their hurts and bruises. At the close of the day, the shepherd would bring the sheep into the shelter and safety of the fold. He makes me lie down. In him is rest, peace, and quiet refuge. He leads me. He gives me guidance and a sense of direction. He restores my soul. In Him is renewal, revival, and reinvigoration. He is with me. He offers His companionship, a sense of his presence. He is always with us. He prepares a table for me. He is the host offering hospitality to his chosen guests. He anoints my head with oil. He gives his blessings with abundant generosity, beyond deserving, until My cup overflows. Sir Knights, grieve not for these Knights who have left us, because sooner or later all of our cups overflow, and the wasting sands of our mortality runs out. Then the Lord will once again take these sheep into His flock in His kingdom, where we will all meet again. Amen. 15 Commandery of the State of Iowa 2001) 15 Address Of The Grand Master Richard L. Campbell It s a great deal of pleasure on my part to bring all of you fraternal greetings and best wishes from your Grand Lodge. Some 325 working Lodges and 30,000 members. I would say to you this morning, that my feelings you have no idea what my feelings were when I came in. If you remember correctly, back in , I got my start in the York Rite, as the Grand Master of the Grand Council, Royal and Select Masters of Iowa. From the very time that I was installed as Grand Master of your Grand Lodge, I looked forward to the day that I could come back and visit this Grand Commandery, also the Grand Chapter and the Grand Council. I am deeply indebted to both of these organizations. On a lighter note, this year, one of the things that we ve tried to promote and I ve tried to promote it in the appendant bodies as well as the Grand Lodge and that s membership. Membership has been the number one priority. We ve done everything in our power to make the craft aware that membership is the number one priority. I ve spoken much to the Scottish Rite the same as I am speaking to you today and I ve told them exactly the same thing that I am going to tell you. Membership is critical. We have to do something about it. If you ll remember at last year s Grand Lodge session, we introduced the first legislation on the one-day class and I will be very truthful with you. When the one-day class was first proposed, I was very much not in favor of it. I was resisting the change, the change to do something different. But I have thought about it and changed my feelings considerably. We must, I think it s absolutely imperative that we have the one-day class. It will not solve all of the membership problems, but it ll help alleviate some of them. As you remember, last year we voted at Grand Lodge on just the proposal that went into the constitution of the Grand Lodge. This year we will vote on that proposal again. Sir Knights, it is imperative that we pass that and I would urge each of you to think long and hard and go back to your respective Lodges and tell them. This is a tool. We certainly don t recommend that the Lodges give up the old traditional way. I, myself, wish we could raise everyone in the traditional way. But still there are a number of men, that are good men, that we could bring into the Lodge through the one-day class. The mechanics of it is an entirely different thing and that will have to be voted on separately. This is the way the class will be set up. It will be the Grand Master s discretion whether he has one, two or three classes throughout the state; how the mentoring will go; how the proficiency will go. That will all be in the mechanics. As far as the proposal is concerned, I would urge each of you to go back to your respective Lodges and think very hard and long. The proposal must be passed by a two-thirds majority. I have told the Scottish Rite this and I m telling you this, I ll tell the Grand Chapter and Grand Council this when I speak to them, it is absolutely imperative that we do this. There are some things I don t like about the one-day class, but there are some things I like about it also. Now many of you Sir Knights are sitting on the sidelines saying How can this help us? I will tell you how it can help us. One of the other points of my program was the mentoring system, which now is in place. However, we need men to go out and take charge of the mentoring system in the various Lodges. The way it will help this Grand Commandery and the York Rite and the Scottish Rite also is if we can get men from those two organizations to go out and head this mentoring program and put it in force. When these men go through and take the First, Second and Third degrees and you mentor them, you will have a direct one-on-one association with each one of them. And this is the way you will be able to sell them on the York Rite or the Scottish Rite. This is the way it was done in the past. I can remember years ago, when I was in Lodge, we had one or two individuals in Lodge that the minute the man proved his third Degree, there was a person there with either a York Rite or Scottish Rite petition in his hand. And this is the way that it has to be. My Brethren, you must help us with the mentoring system, if you are to survive. I have watched the membership not only in the York Rite but in the Scottish Rite as well. It has declined at a rate much the same as that of the Grand Lodge. When I came into Grand Lodge, when I was raised back in 1953, there were ninety-some thousand Masons in the state. Today, we are slightly less than 30,000. So in that brief period of 45 years, look at the membership loss we have had. We felt that sooner or later it would turn around by itself. It will not turn around by itself. It takes every one of you present, if we are going to turn the membership situation around. Now at the various area meetings, I made a promise. I made a promise at each one of those area meetings and I had twelve of them. Every Lodge in the state had an opportunity to visit those and we had better than 70 percent attendance. But I made a promise and, of course, my goal this year was 500 raisings. I don t know whether we will make it or not. I think we are going to make inroads as far as membership is concerned. But I made a promise that if they would go out and each one of them seek a petition for the Blue

16 16 Proceedings of the Grand (June Lodge, I would do the same thing myself. I am happy to report this morning that two days prior to my coming here, I signed a young man up to take the degrees of symbolic Masonry. You can rest assured that when he is finished with those degrees, and I will probably have a great part to play as far as his mentoring and also as far as his proficiency is concerned, I will ask him if he would like very much to join the York Rite. This we must do. There is quite a bit of resistance to change. They said the old way has always been the right way. The time is now for change. We must have a paradigm shift in our thinking. We must get away from the old way. The old way has not worked. If all you re going to do is meet and eat, you might have failure. With that I would say to you that I had looked forward to this day. I ve looked forward to coming and talking to you. I hope that each one of you will resolve and exhibit that the only way that we can improve on membership is a one-on-one situation. One brother, one petition. Isn t it amazing. That s the only way you can do it. I wish you nothing but the best. This Grand Commandery has been nice to me this year. They have done things for me. Billy Joe has been an excellent ambassador at the three cornerstones that we ve had so far. He has been there with a Commandery escort. For this I am very happy. He has also been at many rededications we have done and at the rededications he handles the flag. For that, Billy Joe, I thank you on my behalf as Grand Master and also on behalf of the Grand Lodge. With that my Brethren, I would keep one thought with you in mind. Look to the future. Go out and find some candidates, mentor them and bring them into the wonderful order we call the York Rite. With that I will say to you something I have said at every meeting I have been in and which I love very dearly. I would remind each of you that The clock of life is wound but once. And No man had the power to know just when the hands will stop at late or early hour. So live, love, and toil with the will Place no faith in tomorrow For the hands may then be still.

A warm welcome is extended to the Sir Knights of our neighboring jurisdictions as well as the distinguished officers of our Grand Chapter, Grand Council, Scottish Rite, and appendant bodies and Masonic organizations. The officers of the Grand Commandery of Iowa hope you have an enjoyable and rewarding stay. 61st Triennial of the Grand Encampment of the Knights Templar of the United States of America The 61st Triennial Conclave of the Grand Encampment Knights Templar of the United States of America was held August 12-16, 2000 in Nashville, Tennessee. The Iowa delegation consisted of fourteen Sir Knights. We held a state dinner at the Spaghetti Works in Nashville. It was my pleasure to accompany the Iowa flag to its place on the dais. Sir Knight William Jackson Jones was elected Most Eminent Grand Master and Sir Knight Henry J. DeHeer was appointed as the North Central Department Commander. Sir Knights James Morris Ward, Most Eminent Past Grand Master is to be commended for his successful triennium, the Crusade 2000, and an exceptional conclave in Nashville. Also congratulations to our own, Sir Knight Albert R. Masters, PGC on the completion of his term as our Department Commander. It has been a distinct pleasure to know and work with these outstanding individuals. North Central Department The North Central Department Conference was held October 27-29, 2000 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The Grand Commandery of Iowa was well represented. Several Past Grand Commanders, Grand Officers and Sir Knights attended. The entire executive committee was present. I gave a brief account of the programs for the year and reported on our success in the 2000 Crusade. Officers of the Grand Encampment, including William Jackson Jones, Most Eminent Grand Master, and Henry DeHeer, North Central Department Commander were present and made impressive presentations. The main subject was membership and the continuing of the Crusade 2000 till the end of the year. The 5/50 membership incentive program was discussed and is continued for this triennium. These meetings offer a great opportunity to meet and share ideas with sister jurisdictions and the Grand Encampment Officers. Holy Land Pilgrimage On the recommendation of the Religious Activities committee four Iowa ministers were selected to participate in the Holy Land Pilgrimage. It was my pleasure to personally present the ticket to one of the ministers. The response of those returning is characteristic of the beautiful trip and the opportunity of walking in the path of Jesus. This remains an important program in explaining Christian Masonry to our ministers and through them to their congregations. Thank you to the Religious Activities Committee for screening the applications. Well done, Sir Knights. Knights Templar Educational Foundation I attended the meeting of the Educational Foundation Committee August 26, 2000 in Cedar Falls. Much planning goes into the loan process and the repayment. The committee is doing a fine job of managing the loan money. Sir Knight Edward T. Johnson, PGC, continues to serve as Executive Secretary. The Committee is to be commended for their good work. (June

19 2001) Commandery of the State of Iowa 19 Knights Templar Eye Foundation Sir Knight Glenn N. Marshall, PGC, again led the 33rd annual campaign for our Eye Foundation. I must thank each Commandery who participated and those individuals who gave to our worthy cause. Special recognition was given to those Scottish Rite Sir Knights who have been honored by receiving the thirty-third degree. The response to the letters sent to the thirty-third s has been overwhelming. Thank you to our Scottish Rite Sir Knights for their support. It was also my pleasure to attend a luncheon at the University of Iowa along with Sir Knight William Jackson Jones, Most Eminent Grand Master of the Grand Encampment, and Sir Knight Albert R. Masters, PGC, to present checks totaling $75,000 to Dr. Edwin M. Stone, MD, Ph.D. The money helps patients who cannot afford low vision devices. The University of Iowa has benefited from both the Grand Encampment and the Grand Commandery of Iowa, and I encourage continuing our support of our Christian cause, The Knight Templar Eye Foundation. Upon adjournment this afternoon, the presentations for the Eye Awards will be given. We are, this year, trying something a little different on this. We are going to adjourn and invite the ladies to come in and watch the presentation. Grand Commandery Charity Fund This committee does a great service for our Grand Commandery. I encourage the constituent Commanderies to utilize these funds to help those in need in your community. Sir Knight Eugene L. Aldrich, PGC has done a fine job leading this committee and is there to serve. What better way to distribute alms to poor and weary travelers, feed the hungry, clothe the naked, and bind up the wounds of the afflicted. At this time, I would ask PGC, Gene to make a few remarks. RIGHT EMINENT GRAND COMMANDER, DISTINGUISHED EAST, SIR KNIGHTS AND FRIENDS. When the records of the charity fund were turned over to us in June of 2000, no audits had been made since Transactions were fully documented. To establish a benchmark on which to build our records, copies of previous years statements were requested from the bank. All incoming expense from 1992 to May 31, 2000 were traced and documented. From these records, we reconstructed the financial reports for each of those years and these reports were sent to the Grand Recorder for his records and may be reviewed by anyone upon request. A finanacial report for 2000 was submitted in three parts. Part one was June 1, 1999 through May 31, Part two was June 1 through December 31, 2000 which was the six months that our commmittee had it. Then we combined them to submit a report for the year These records will be given to a CPA that I know, who is a brother and a Past Master, who will do a professional audit which I hope will be available for printing in the final proceedings. Many of our CDs matured in 2000 and we were fortunate to get some good interest rates. A good friend of mine, who Grand Lodge raised as a Master Mason a year ago last May, was president of the bank and he always gave me one to two points above whatever the prime rate was. Also our checking and savings accounts were reduced in favor of a money market account which is drawing 5.5% interest upon which checks could be written, with plans to close the checking and savings accounts in CD income has been divided with approximately 60% direct deposits to the money market account and 40% to capitalize to allow for inflation. Sir Knights, your Charity Fund continues to grow and this is not good. Our spending,1993 through 2000, is listed on a chart in the report. $14, for relief and $10,650 in donations which went to the University of Iowa Hospitals or the Eye Foundation. Only two Commanderies responded in 2000 and only one so far in Sir Knights, we must do better than this or face scurtiny by unwelcome sources. Our ending balance as of December 31, 2000 is $119, Now, that is just too much money to trust me with. Most of our CDs, right now, are in the 6.5 to 7.15% range. They will be maturing in October and November. When our interest comes in this year, we re gonna be way up over $125,000 unless we can spend some of this money. I was asked by several Sir Knights here, How can we spend this money? If you will check with your Commanders and your Recorders, the committee has tried to make it as very simple as possible for you. We have come up with two forms. The first form is very simple. You make a donation for any cause that you think worthy. Send in a copy of the check and we will immediately send you a check. That s all there is to it. That s what the code says. You spend the money, ask for half of it back, you get it. We won t question it. Now, if you don t have any money or you want to give a larger amount, there is a simple little form to make out. You tell us why it should be and when I get this, I forward this to Andy Emmert and David Livermore and let them look at it. They put yea or nay on it and send it back. If it s yea, the check goes out immediately. The last time I sent these out with a stamped, self-addressed envelope, Andy and David had them back within a week.

20 20 Proceedings of the Grand They re willing to serve. I m willing to serve. Make the request for the money so we can spend it. If you don t want to spend it, let s give it to the investments committee and let them take care of investing it. It s a lot of work. I can see, now, why over the years this was handed back and forth between a couple of Sir Knights who because of changing duties and promotions, things got a little bit behind. Sir Knights, my lady, Lillian spent countless hours in research. She had papers spread on every bed, every floor, every hallway, every card table. Numerous phone calls to banks. All to try to get these records straight. It s all accounted for. Everything was there. We just felt that we would like to build this history. As I said in my letter, the only reason I could take this job was because my wife likes to do this. So, I let her do it. Right Eminent, Grand Commander, I thank you for the opportunity to chastize them gently. I ve had a couple of them approach me. I have the forms with me. It d be my pleasure and I know David and Andy s pleasure to give you the money. Thank you. Schools of Instruction The Board of Instruction of the Grand Commandery of Iowa held three schools of instruction this year. Schools were held at Washington, Waterloo, and Jefferson. While attendance was good at these schools, all Sir Knights are encouraged to attend. The exemplification of the Commandery degrees is very important. It is imperative that the new knight be impressed with the solemnity and meaning of our degrees. As the years pass we continue to lose many of our faithful and hard working Sir Knights. It is of utmost importance that new Sir Knights fill their ranks. Each Commandery should hold Schools of Instruction to teach those willing to learn. Also each Commandery should hold an annual Inspection. Remember, our degrees are what sets us apart and must be presented in the best way to impress the new candidate. Our Board of Instruction and Inspectors stand ready to help and are deeply appreciated. Recorder s School The Recorder s schools were held in conjunction with the schools of instruction. Sir Knight Willard M. Loper, PGC, Grand Recorder ably conducted the schools. Thank you to those faithful Sir Knights who serve as Recorders of their Commanderies. It could be said that a Commandery is no better than its Recorder. Our Recorders give much of their time and talent for their Commanderies. It is important that the Recorder continue to work on decreasing suspensions, demits and increasing new members through reinstatement and affiliation. Knight Templar Magazine The Iowa Supplement to the Knight Templar Magazine continues to be an effective tool in communicating with Sir Knights across the state. Because of added responsibilities Sir Knight Willard Loper, PGC, Grand Recorder ask to be relieved as editor. Sir Knight Willard has done an excellent job. I agreed to handle these responsibilities. Thank you to the Sir Knights who submit articles, pictures, and dates. I really do appreciate them. Masonic Cooperation The Grand Commandery of Iowa has been blessed this part year with exceptional cooperation with the Grand Lodge of Iowa, the Grand Chapter of Iowa, the Grand Council of Iowa, and the Scottish Rite. The Cornerstone Initiative helped bring this cooperation about. I have been very proud of the attendance of the executive committee at functions of each of these bodies. It shows that we can work together. It has been a pleasure to work with Most Worshipful Brother Lester C. Fleming, Past Grand Master, Most Worshipful Brother Richard L. Campbell, Grand Master of Masons in Iowa, A. Joseph Malmer, Most Excellent Past Grand High Priest, William R. Kauten, Most Excellent Grand High Priest, Alex P. Kane, Past Most Illustrious Grand Master and Dana J. Anderson, Most Illustrious Grand Master. Special thanks to my friend and Sir Knight Harry S. Barrows, Sovereign Grand Inspector General for the Scottish Rite, Orient of Iowa for this encouragement and support. (June

21 2001) Commandery of the State of Iowa 21 Grand Commander s Reception The officers and members of Temple Commandery No. 4 K.T. of Des Moines hosted a reception honoring Sir Knight Billy Joe Hildreth, Right Eminent Grand Commander, and Sir Knight John W. Clearman, Eminent Grand Treasurer of the Grand Commandery Knights Templar of Iowa September 9, Over 200 guests enjoyed the fine meal prepared by the Des Moines Scottish Right Kitchen Krew. Sir Knight Bryce B. Hildreth was Master of Ceremonies for this evening. It was an honor to have several dignitaries present, including: Sir Knight Albert R. Masters, Past Department Commander; Sir Knight Henry J. DeHeer, Right Eminent Department Commander, North Central Department, Grand Encampment Knights Templar of the United States of America; Sir Knight and Most Excellent Companion, William R. Kauten, Grand High Priest of the Grand Chapter, Royal Arch Masons of Iowa; Sir Knight and Right Illustrious Companion Donald E. Mosier, Deputy Grand Master, Grand Council, Royal and Select Masters of Iowa; Sir Knight and Illustrious Brother Harry S. Barrows, Sovereign Grand Inspector General, Scottish Rite, Orient of Iowa; the Honorable Charles Grassely, United States Senator; and Sir Knight and Most Worshipful Brother Lester C. Fleming, Grand Master of Masons in Iowa. Following introductions Sir Knight Ronald Lindhart provided some musical selections, then Grand Prelate George Harrison brought the evening to a close. Thank you to those who attended. It was an evening Darlene and I will not forget. Membership Membership is the lifeblood of any organization. This is true for the Grand Commandery of Iowa. Membership lies with each and every one of us. Our future is in our hands. The Crusade 2000 produced many new Sir Knights in Iowa and the nation. It is my hope that these new knights have or will become active participants in their Commandery. While it appears that we will fall short of our goal of 100 new knights, I thank each Sir Knight who signed a petition and advanced a brother to further light in Masonry. At this time, I call upon our Membership Chairman to give a report. EMINENT GRAND COMMANDER, DISTINGUISHED GUESTS AND SIR KNIGHTS ALL: We ve done a lot this year and last year to help improve the membership in the Commandery and in the Masonic oragnizations overall. However, the report I have for the first four months of this year has let us down a little bit. For the month of April, we had suspensions of 86 members. That s more than we ve had in a long time. All the members that we have lost this year have been and that s in four months. That s more than we lost all of last year and I think we all know of a few reasons why this is happening. But we need to get out and bring more young people into these lines of Masonry, work with these people, and get them to become York Rite members. Next Monday, Des Moines Lodge will be voting on a 24-year-old person to become a member. Sunday, when I go home, I m supposed to pick up a petition of a 19-year-old person to become a member. We really have to get out to work to get out membership back up. With all the knightings we ve been having, we re still falling short. I think we really have to get out and pound the pavement, so to speak, to keep our membership from falling down. Thank you. Dispensations Granted The following dispensations were granted: 1. June 8, 2000, Temple Commandery No. 4 to hold an election of officers at the June Regular Conclave, due to the resignation of the Commander. 2. October 10, 2000, St. Aldemar Commandery No. 30 to hold an election of officers at the October Regular Conclave, due to a resignation. 3. December 13, 2000, Palestine Commandery No. 2 to hold their December Regular meeting one week late due to inclement weather.

28 28 Series General Order No. 2 Proceedings of the Grand Grand Commandery Knights Templar of Iowa (June Billy Joe Hildreth Right Eminent Grand Commander N.E. 22nd St. Ankeny, IA TO THE OFFICERS AND MEMBERS OF THE CONSTITUENT COMMANDERIES OF THE GRAND COMMAND- ERY KNIGHTS TEMPLAR OF IOWA: Salutations and Knightly Greetings: Year of Our Lord 2000 For to you born this day in the city of David a Savior who is Christ the Lord. Born of poor parents in a manger, wrapped in swaddling clothes. Visited by shepherds and by kings. His birthing gifts used to finance His exile to Egypt, where he would remain until a King sworn to His death passes from this world. Into this humble beginning was born a man whose life spanned only 33 years. Employed as a carpenter, He never gained much in the way of possessions or wealth. While alive, at the height of His fame, His followers probably never numbered over 100. And His twelve disciples, those closest and most trusted, all abandoned or denied Him at His hour of greatest need. But the magnitude of His accomplishments exceeds any ever obtained by common man! In 2000 years His teachings have spread throughout the world, affecting millions of lives! What teachings could so drastically affect so many? That each of us, as creations of God, are of equal worth! That the wealth of man is not measured by possessions, but by how he acts and thinks, and treats his fellows! That it is truly better to give than it is to receive. That we all, as children of the same Almighty Parent, and inhabitants of the same planet are to help, aid and assist each other. The world today emphasizes the gathering of the material without regard to the spiritual. We are quick to measure success by what we own rather than how we behave. Even the celebration of our Lord Savior s Nativity has become our busiest shopping season of the year. During this Christmas Season, it will serve all Christian Masons well to remember the teachings of our Lord and Savior. To treat each other as we would they should treat us. To recognize the right of each person to pursue their own happiness and belief without prejudice. To give of ourselves not of the material, but of the spiritual. A smile to a stranger, a word of encouragement, an offer of assistance, each freely made and willingly given. Such is the way, as Christian Masons, we should celebrate the birth of Christ and to acknowledge the truth and worth of His teachings. 32 32 Proceedings of the Grand Grand Commandery Knights Templar of the State of Iowa APARTMENT OF THE GRAND COMMANDER (June Series February 26, 2001 General Order No. 5 Ankeny, Iowa TO THE OFFICERS AND MEMBERS OF COMMANDERIES OF THE GRAND COMMANDERY KNIGHTS TEM- PLAR OF IOWA: EASTER GREETINGS I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and whoever lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this? (John 11:25-26) So asked Jesus of Martha, and Martha answers Yes, Lord; I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, he who is coming into the world. (John 11:27) Martha had an advantage over us. She was able to face Jesus and answer His question looking Him in the eye. We can only answer His question in our prayers and by our actions. Consider, how do you answer this question. Do you believe Jesus is the Christ? Do you believe His promise of ever lasting life? Spring is a time of rebirth. The world around us is given new life as the bitter cold of winter passes to the bright sun and gentle wind of the new season. Similarly, Easter should be a time for the rebirth of our faith, faith in our God, faith in our country, faith in our family, faith in Masonry and faith in our fellow man. We should demonstrate our faith in our every day actions, toward our chosen religion, toward our country and its government, toward our family and friends, toward our fellow creatures. Let us make this spring, this Easter season, our resurrection in our beliefs and in our every day lives. This blessing of the Father be on us all. George J. Harrison Grand Prelate This Easter Message is to be read at your Easter Observance if it is held in the Asylum, or otherwise at the head of the lines at your first Conclave after its receipt. 36 36 Proceedings of the Grand At this time, I m going to call on the Grand Prelate for a report on religious activities. EMINENT COMMANDER, DISTINGUISHED EAST, SIR KNIGHTS, FRIENDS ALL. The preliminary report of the Religious Activities Committee is in the preliminary reports printing. I would update this report to show a total of 20 Commanderies reporting in the observance of religious activities. Fifteen of whom observed Ascension Sunday for a total of 206 members and visitors present. Nineteen observed Christmas for a total of 323 visitors and members present and eighteen observed Easter with a total of 247 Sir Knights and visitors present. This is a total attendance of 776 Sir Knights and visitors. Note 20 Commanderies reporting out of 43 active Commanderies in the state of Iowa -- not overly impressive. If you are a Recorder of a Commandery, please submit this report to the next Grand Prelate, even if you did not observe any of these holidays. However, 776 Sir Knights and visitors present does reflect the dedication of the Knights and Commanderies that did observe these holidays. I would point out that Ascension Sunday is the least observed and least attended of all the holidays. Sir Knights, we talk about membership. When you quote briefly from the fifth chapter of Matthew, Ye are the light of the world, a city that is set on a hill cannot be hid. Sir Knights, ye are the light of Christian Masonry. If you set your Commandery on a hill, it cannot be hidden. The way to set it on a hill is to bring it out to the public. The best way to do this in religious activities is to do it through Ascension Sunday. Christmas and Easter are typically observed by reading the Grand Prelate s report at the head of the lines. The members, Sir Knights and their relatives already know the benefits of Christian Masonry. Ascension Sunday, on the other hand, is usually observed in a church. Those in attendance may, and quite often may not, know what Christian Masonry is. Sir Knights, if you consider Masonry important, wear it on your sleeve. Practice it in your life. Bring it before the world and they will join you. Condition of the Order Do all the good you can. To all the people you can, By all the means you can, In all the places you can, As long as ever you can. Serving the Grand Commandery of Iowa the past four years I have learned much and hope I have in some small way left the order in a better position for the future. The Grand Commandery of Iowa is blessed in that it enjoys financial security. Do not let this create idleness among our ranks, rather a charge to rally. As Darlene and I have traveled around our beautiful state and the surrounding jurisdictions, there is much to be proud about. The Crusade 2000 was an astounding success. The Knight Templar Eye Foundation continues to grow and help those in need. It was encouraging to have the heads of the Grand York Rite Bodies at the installation of officers in Manchester. The fellowship and hospitality is outstanding. But there is more that we can do. Each Commandery must have activities. I encourage fundraisers, public installations, community projects, and involving the ladies and families. Our meetings need to be organized and timely. We need to take pride in our ritual, in the conferring of all the Commandery degrees. There needs to be an us attitude. Sir Knights should be active in their blue lodges, perhaps becoming a mentor for new brothers. This is where our new members start. Let us shine our light before others that they may know our good works done in the name of our Savior, Jesus Christ. Recommendations I make the following recommendations for the good of our Christian Order 1. That each Sir Knight live his vow in his heart and daily life. 2. That Membership Growth remain a priority of the Grand Commandery. 3. To continue the incentive programs for new candidates. 4. Each Commandery observe the three Christian Holy Days. 5. Continued support of the Eye Foundation and the program at the University of Iowa. 6. Promote public awareness (Cornerstone Ceremonies) 7. Continue the Cornerstone Initiative for Cooperation with The Grand Lodge of Iowa, The Grand Chapter, The Grand Council, The Scottish Rite, and the Shrine. 8. Encourage Commandery Schools and Inspections. (June

Let us take comfort in the words of the great agnostic, Robert G. Ingersoll. To know that all the paths that human beings travel turn and wind as they may, lead to the gates of stainless peace! How the heart would thrill and throb to know that Christ was the conqueror of death; that at his grave the all-devouring monster was baffled and beaten forever; that from that moment the tomb became the door that opens to eternal life. Conclusion Labor omnia vincit (Labor conquers everything) Labor with what zeal we will. Something still remains undone. Something uncompleted still. Waits the rising of the sun. My year of labor for the Grand Commandery of Iowa has come to a close. I pray that I have given good service to you, my friends and Sir Knights. What a true honor to have served the Grand Commandery of Iowa as Grand Commander. To the Grand Commandery Officers, Committeemen, and Past Grand Commanders, Thank you. Your support, encouragement, and advice have left a lasting impression on me that shall endure the rest of my life. I had the pleasure and the honor of presenting the colors at Grand Chapter, Grand Council and Grand Lodge. I attended all of the executive and finance committee meetings, Cornerstone layings, Grand Lodge, Grand Chapter, and Grand Council. It was a pleasure to attend Grand Officers Receptions and Inspections. I traveled to Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois, and the North Central Department Conference held in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. I also attended York Rite Festivals, one school of instruction and a number of installations. I was always extended the finest courtesies and hospitality wherever I went. I wish to thank my home Commandery, Ascalon #25 for their loyal support the past two years. In closing I must say thank you one and all for your support, your kindness and special thanks to the Grand Commandery for the contingency fund. It is very much appreciated. It was also a fun year traveling with Sir Knight Clyde Reasland, Deputy Grand Commander to a number of functions. Respectfully Submitted Richard A. Zummak Grand Generalissimo

44 44 Proceedings of the Grand Report of the Grand Captain General TO THE OFFICERS AND SIR KNIGHTS OF THE GRAND COMMANDERY KNIGHTS TEMPLAR OF THE STATE OF IOWA It is an honor to have been elected at our Grand Conclave last June to serve as Grand Captain General of the Grand Commandery Knights Templar of the State of Iowa. We will be attending the Missouri Conclave in May. I thank you, Sir Knights, for the privilege of representing you at these functions and for the contingency fund that helped make it possible. DeMolay #1 Bruce #34 St. Johns #21 Mt. Lebanon #21 The remaining thirty-three (33) Commanderies show a loss for this period of time. From year to year we are showing the same pattern, heavy loss through death and suspension. While we can not control the death count, surely we can do something about the suspensions. We spend a lot of time convincing our Masonic Brethren to become York Rite Masons but how much time do we spend convincing Sir Knights to pay last years dues and be reinstated? How much time do we spend with our new Sir Knights to really get them interested in becoming active members of our Commanderies? The answer I m afraid is not nearly enough. All in all we need to keep on attracting new members but we also need to retain the members we already have. Respectfully Submitted Thomas James Allen KCT Grand Captain General

60 60 Proceedings of the Grand Report of the Board of Instruction TO THE OFFICERS AND MEMBERS OF THE GRAND COMMANDERY, KNIGHTS TEMPLAR OF IOWA (June The Board of Instruction respectfully submits the Report for the Calendar Year. Seven commanderies held inspections during this period. Commanderies with less than 100 members - 2. Commanderies with 100 to 200 members - 4. Commanderies with more than 200 members - 1. The annual award for the Commandery receiving the highest proficiency score in each category are: Of the two with less than 100 members who held inspections: Zerubbabel #68 of Albia who wins the honor with a score of 708. The four with 100 to 200 members who held inspections: St. Aldemar #30 of Marshalltown wins the honor with a score of 708. Columbian #18 of Sioux City was the only Commandery with 200 or more members who held an inspection with a score of 744. We realize that it is becoming more difficult for the smaller Commanderies to find enough officers to fill the stations for an inspection. With this in mind perhaps it is time to change our format, and merge our smaller Commanderies for the purpose of conferring the Order of the Temple and holding an Inspection. A detailed report of the inspection returns can be found in the following pages of this report. The Board of Instruction again held three district schools this spring with Recorders school conducted by the Grand Recorder Willard Loper. Call to Order - Day One Afternoon Sir Knight Billy Joe Hildreth, Right Eminent Grand Commander, reconvened the Grand Commandery Knights Templar of the State of Iowa in its 137th Annual Conclave pursuant to adjournment this morning. Sir Knight George J. Harrison, Grand Prelate, led us in our devotion. Address of Sir Knight Blair Christy Mayford Most Eminent Past Grand Master of the Grand Encampment and Personal Representative of William Jackson Jones, Most Eminent Grand Master of the Grand Encampment Knights Templar of the USA Right Eminent Grand Commander, Most Worshipful Grand Master, Distinguished East, Sir Knights All I would like to assist your Grand Master in his plea this morning on your one day classes. We are at a critical stage. Our Grand Lodge is like a barometer. When the Grand Lodge loses membership, we lose membership in the York and Scottish Rites. When it increases, we have increases at the same time. So Sir Knights get out and plug for this one-day session. I agree with him one hundred percent. You do your work as much as you can in your own organization and you have a certain group of people who want to get it in one day. Those are the ones we ve got to get our hands on. Don t give up the good work that we do in our Lodges, Chapters, Councils, Commanderies and Scottish Rites. But let s back your Grand Master and I m very sure, with the attitude that he has, that officers in that line will have the same thing after this too. So, congratulations Grand Master and you have my assistance in all that I can do for you. I would like to recognize some people that I have worked with for years. I ve traveled back and forth across the borders of Illinois into Missouri all the states that border on Missouri and Sir Knight Henry DeHeer has always been one of the outstanding Grand Commanders of Illinois. Henry, congratulations to you on your appointment as North Central Department Commander. If you need any assistance, I hope I can help. Gene Aldrich, I d like to thank you for that flowery introduction this morning. That was fabulous. Thank you Gene. There s another Missourian here. I hope he s here now, Rocky Wheeler. Rocky s our Junior Past Grand Commander. Just out of office two weeks and he s not the new kid on the block anymore. Now he s a permanent member of the Grand Encampment and we welcome you, Rocky and it s nice to recognize you. Then we have the Supreme Chauffeur of the Social Order of the Beauceant with us, Sir Knight Jay Edging. We ve gotten to know these people quite well, especially at Minnesota last year, his home state, and we look forward to seeing more of you and Nancy. Thank you. Then there is one other fellow who is here. We go way back. I go back to 1975 and he goes back to 1972, Sir Knight Al Masters. Al, it s been great being with you all these years. Thanks for your support. Sir Knights during my term as Grand Master, I pushed our three great charities. I designated them as Past, Present and Future; all apropos to our Grand Encampment. In that, our Holy Land Pilgrimage and our great heritage with the Crusades, as Grand Master I sponsored five trips to the Holy Land, taking more than three hundred ladies and Sir Knights on the Tenth Crusade. You probably saw my articles in the magazine. I pushed the Tenth Crusade every month. I was the first Grand Master that had the opportunity of stepping foot on the Holy Land since Jacques DeMolay was burned at the stake. This is our historic past.

66 66 Proceedings of the Grand The present is our great Knight Templar Eye Foundation. I guess you and I were closer to the Eye Foundation than any other group, with Dr. Stone and the university here. Taking care of those who cannot take care of themselves is our goal for the Eye Foundation. That is the present. We are doing that now. The future is in our young people. We need to help them attain they educational needs, through our Educational Loan Foundation. This is our future. What a heritage we have been left! In the 33rd Voluntary Campaign, Iowa ranked ninth with a cumulative total of $33,116.08, contributing $8.05 per capita. The Grand Commandery of Iowa does not have to be told how important giving can be. Again, Sir Knights of Iowa, many thanks for the warmth and hospitality that I and my lady Dorella have received from all of you. Now in 1975, I made my first trip into Iowa. It was in Ottumwa, Iowa. Max Ellis was Grand Commander and it was HOT. How many here were at the 1975 Conclave in Ottumwa? It was so hot that they had the ladies luncheon scheduled beside the swimming pool. My wife told me that they drank their Jello. It melted by the time the waiters could get it out there. The evening banquet was held in a little igloo. It had windows up 10 or 15 feet all around it. Only had doors for entrance and exit. No air conditioning. Willard Avery was representing the Grand Master and he was soaking wet. How many of you remember the old frock coat? That s what Willard had on. So Willard issued an order, everyone take their coats off. When Willard took his off, all he had on was a T-shirt, a collar and two cuffs. He was the most comfortable one in the place. Sir Knight Watts, are you here? John Harris Watts and his lady Jackie were in attendance at that affair. Jackie took violently ill and passed out, literally, from the overheat and we were worried about her because that was a critical thing. Halfway through the ceremony, the electric went off and of course, Max had a beautiful voice. We had a songfest until the electric came back on. Believe it or not, just about two weeks before in Missouri, we had the same thing happen and Max led the music down there. He was well versed in being able to sing songs with people in emergencies. Ottumwa, Iowa will always be in my memories. It was a warm affair. They had the review out in the parking lots. It was a great, great get together. Sir Knights, it is always good to come into Iowa, even if you have to drive all day in the rain. We didn t have any rain down there. We re five inches below on rainfall. There is one thing that we don t agree with you on, keep that cold weather up here. Our winter started in November and it just ended about two weeks ago with a ninety-degree day. But Sir Knights, all kidding aside, you re a great group of Sir Knights. My lady Dorella and I are most happy to be up here representing Sir Knight William Jackson Jones, Most Eminent Grand Master of the Grand Encampment and to represent him has been quite an honor. I shall relay to him the warmth and hospitality that we have received. Sir Knights, it s three o clock and time for me to sit down. Tellers for the Election Grand Commander Hildreth appointed the following Sir Knights as tellers for the election of officers: Glenn Holmes, David Livermore, Berdette Bryngelson, Bob Woodburn, Greg Kenkel, and John Jones. Charitable Activities Committee TO THE RIGHT EMINENT GRAND COMMANDER, GRAND OFFICERS, and the SIR KNIGHTS of the GRAND COMMANDERY KNIGHTS TEMPLAR of IOWA: That Others may see. What would your world be without sight? While four little words best serve to exemplify the quality of Christian Knighthood, they are part of our obligations. The 33rd Annual Campaign is now at an end. You, Sir Knights of Iowa, have opened your hearts, more especially your pocketbooks, with such generosity which has, never before, seen the equal. The final tally shows Iowa in the ninth spot among the sixty reporting commanderies of the Grand Encampment. Your contributions, made up from all sources, amounted to a total of $33,116.08! This amounted to a per capita of $8.05 which ranked us twelveth in the standings. Well done, good and faithful Sir Knights! Our previous high was two years ago during the 31st Campaign. What is even more noteworthy is that EVERY commandery in the state participated for what I believe to be the first time in our history! Just think All 44 commanderies. Our standing left us out of top place in the North Central department for the first time in five years, second only to South Dakota and still, ahead of Illinois. Congratulations to our sister state, who surely must have found the mother lode, their total being supported by three $10k gifts. What we, of the North Central Department, can and should be proud of is that in the top ten contributors, we had three places, South Dakota-8, Iowa-9, and Illinois-10. What other department can match that?? How about it, Henry? A summary of your work in this the 33rd Campaign, there were 15 commanderies which earned the Grand Encampment Award for having contributed at least $10 per man. Three of these were first time entries in this category: De Paynes #6, Oskaloosa: In additional Malta #31, Ottumwa; and Nazareth #33, Manchester. In addition, there were 9 commanderies who contributed at least $5 per man. And 19 of our commanderies qualified for the Golden Arrow Award, the brain child of Clifford M. Baumback, PGC. Qualification for this award is based only on Fund-Raisers of at least $3 for each man in your commandery. Again this year, by those two perennial contenders from Albia and Ames. This Campaign the winner s plaque goes to Zerubbabel #68, Albia! There have been three commanderies who have joined the ranks of 100% Life Sponsors since I have been on this committee. The 27th Campaign we welcomed St. John s #21, Centerville. In the 31st Campaign, Ivanhoe #17, Council Bluffs joined and this year we greet Malta #31, Ottumwa. CONGRATULATIONS!

69 2001) Commandery of the State of Iowa 69 Before I forget, our REGC Billy Joe and I suspect his son, Bryce have contributed much to the success of this 33rd Campaign, By their efforts, the 33 degree Club was a success and Temple Cmdry. #4 almost made the grand Encampment $10 per Capita award. $9.73! Thank you, both. Again, this year Sir Knight Wayne Syverson deserves a special word for his caring generosity. For the sixth year in a row, he has contributed $1000 to the Grand Master s club! Will everyone please stand as we say a huge THANKS to Wayne! With our ranks now numbering 4112, imagine what if? 4112 x $1000? Also, due recognition are the efforts of Sir Knight D. Michael Bonney, PGC and Lady Gloria who, in last year s projects, raised $ which after a match by the Grand Commandery was to total $1440. And this year, a contribution by Lady Darlene Hildreth in the amount of $130 and more to follow after the end of the conclave. The Past Grand Commander s Association contributed $200 as a memorial to A. Joseph Malmer. Also, the Iowa York Rite College the sum of $25 and thanks to Julien Chapter #125, OES. Fund-Raisers amounted to $ which was matched by Grand Commandery Funds. This is the life-line of our giving. Three Sir Knights joined the Grand Master s Club ($1000 donation) and they were the afore-mentioned Wayne Syverson plus our Right Eminent Grand Commander, Billy Joe Hildreth and Sir Knight Harry S. Barrows who in a sister Rite is know as the Sovereign Grand Inspector General, Orient of Iowa. Thomas M. Immermann finished his obligation to the Grand Commander s Club and is a member of the Grand Master s Club also. These are 26 remaining Sir Knights who are obligated members of the Grand Commander s Club. We received, into our ranks of Life Sponsors, by payment of the required $30 due, a total of 52 plus the aforementioned 110 Sir Knights from Malta Commandery No. 31 of Ottumwa. Now 100%. We received donations of $50 from fifteen which made them Associate Patrons and six more contributed $100 as Patrons. A new addition, this campaign, was the 33 Degree Scottish Rite Mason Club whereby a donation of $33 entered the holder of same. There were 52 contributions in honor of these honored Masons. After a record fifteen cases approved for funding in the last Templar year of , we have dropped this year to a total of just five. Total cost of these five cases amounted to $14, compared to last year s total of $25, Three cases were sponsored by Sir Knight Dennis Zahrt, Davenport; one each by Sir Knight Harley Holm, Burlington and Sir Knight Russell Hitchcock of Spencer. All of which causes me to conclude that all is well within our state and no one else is in need of our help. The Grand Commandery presented $30,000 as their part of a joint effort with the Grand Encampment, to the University of Iowa for purchase of equipment for the Ophthalmology Department which included Low-Vision Jordys etc. as loaners to those in need. This concludes my Annual Report and once again, I THANK YOU for your support. Remember, your foundation can only be as helpful as your generosity will permit! STAND PROUD, Sir Knights!! Respectfully Submitted Glenn N. Marshall, PGC, KCT Chairman Adjournment - Day One Afternoon Grand Commander Hildreth announced that the Grand Commander s Banquet will be held at 6:30 PM this evening. 71 2001) Commandery of the State of Iowa 71 In Annual Conclave Call to Order - Day Two June 2, 2001 Ames, Iowa Sir Knight Billy Joe Hildreth, Right Eminent Grand Commander, called the Grand Commandery Knights Templar of Iowa to order at 8:00 AM, Saturday, June 2, 2001, pursuant to adjournment with the same officers present as yesterday. Sir Knight George J. Harrison, Grand Prelate led us in our devotions. Minutes Approved Grand Recorder Willard M. Loper, PGC, moved that the reading of the minutes be waived and the minutes by approved as printed in the proceedings. Motion seconded, approved. Final Report of the Jurisprudence Committee Right Eminent Grand Commander, Distinguished East, Sir Knights, nothing on the Jurisprudence Committee, but yesterday when I spoke on the Charity Fund, my appeal was successful. Sir Knight Bill Dusenbery has been talking to me for several months about a minister in need of help. The man is a part-time minister at the Methodist Church in West Chester, very poor eye sight. He s tried the Jorday. It didn t work. He s diabetic. He s on dialysis. The church wants to help him but it s close to $2000 and more than the small congregation could handle. More than the Commandery in Washington could. So after my appeal, he came to me and said Do you have that form. At least I got him off dead-center. And he filled out the form; he brought it right back to me and said I hope this is all right. I was familiar with it and I looked at it. Andrew Emmert was right there and I turned to him and said Andrew, read this. I went about my business and a little bit later Andrew came back. I said, Do you approve? He said, Yes. I said, Sign it. I knew David Livermore was here and I said, You find David. He found David and David read it. He signed it approved and brought it to me. As soon as I can get home tonight or tomorrow in the mess that we ve got (We re moving into our new house tonight for the first time. Everything is all over. We bought this house two months ago and we re just moving into it tonight), if I find that checkbook, and I m sure Lillian will, I will write a check for $1000, the request from the Commandery in Washington. Now if they can do it, you can do it. I m sure that we have, with our interest coming in, we probably have close to $130,000. I d like to spend that down, because that s too much money. Report of the Distinguished Visitors Committee At the 2001 conclave, we had the pleasure of entertaining the following distinguished visitors: The Most Worshipful Master of the Grand Lodge of Iowa; Past Grand Master of the Grand Encampment Knights Templar of the USA; North Central Department Commander, Grand Encampment; one Past North Central Department Commander; the Soveign Grand Inspector General of the Iowa Scottish Rite, Southern Jurisdiction; Iowa De- Molay State Master Councilor; the representative of Iowa Rainbow; Grand Royal Matron of Amaranth; Iowa DeMolay Executive Officer; Deputy Grand Secretary of the Grand Lodge of Iowa; Chairman of Division and Reference of the Grand Lodge of Iowa; Grand High Priest of Royal Arch Masons of Iowa; Grand Illustrious Master of the Grand Council, Royal and Select Masters of Iowa; the Grand Recorder of the Grand Chapter and Grand Council of Iowa; four Grand Commanders of sister jurisdictions; one Deputy Grand Commander; six Past Grand Commanders from sister jurisdictions; one Grand Representative to Iowa from Wisconsin, and one Grand Representative; fourteen Past Grand Commanders from Iowa along with Billy Joe Hildreth, Grand Commander of Iowa and all the Iowa Grand Commandery officers. Respectfully Submitted, Harley E. Holm, Chairman Sir Knight Holm moved the acceptance of the report. This motion was seconded, carried and the report was approved.

72 72 Proceedings of the Grand RESOLUTION Sir Knight Harley E. Holm presented the following resolution: In appreciation of their personal visit to our Annual Conclave, be it resolved that all eligible distinguished visitors from other jurisdictions be elected to honorary membership in the Grand Commandery Knights Templar of Iowa. Harley E. Holm, PGC Chairman Sir Knight Holm moved the adoption of the resolution. The motion was seconded, carried, and the resolution was adopted. Honorary membership cards were presented to the following Sir Knights: Robert Tate, Grand Commander, South Dakota; Frank Vreeland, Grand Commander, Wisconsin; Charles Nelson, Grand Commander, Minnesota; Gordon Pinney, Grand Commander, Nebraska. Recognition of Distinguished Visitors - Part III Grand Commander Hildreth called on the following Distinguished Visitors for a few remarks: Frank Vreeland, Right Eminent Grand Commander, Wisconsin; William Kauten, Grand High Priest, Grand Chapter, Royal Arch Masons of Iowa; Richard Reilly, Very Eminent Deputy Grand Commander, Wisconsin; Dean Anderson, Grand Illustrious Master, Grand Council, Royal and Select Masters of Iowa; Rocky Weaver, Past Grand Commander, Missouri; Leon Sonksen, Past Grand Commander, Colorado. Each brought greetings from their respective Grand Commanderies and Bodies, thanked the Grand Commandery of Iowa for the courtesies shown and invited us to visit their Grand Conclave or Communication. Address of Sir Knight Henry J. DeHeer North Central Department Commander RIGHT EMINENT GRAND COMMANDER, MOST EMINENT PAST GRAND MASTER OF THE GRAND ENCAMP- MENT, GRAND OFFICERS AND SIR KNIGHTS ALL: It gives me a great deal of pleasure to address you at the conclave of the state of Iowa this year as your Department Commander. You ve heard one of them just very recently brag about having been an Iowian. He had to hold it over all the other visitors here. But I have news for him, I m an Iowian too. Most of you already knew that. I was born in Ottumwa, educated in Muscatine and slipped across the river to Illinois. Now when I retired from civil service, the Coronel asked me Are you going to Wichta Falls, Texas? I said, No, Sir. I m gonna see the Chanute Air Force base in my rearview mirror and I m going to be happy about that. And I was very happy. It gave me a chance to do a lot of the things I ve always wanted to do to visit all the Grand Commanderies that I could, visit all the Commanderies that I could. I have that opportunity now. This is commercial time. You heard our Past Grand Master give you the words of our current Grand Master, William Jackson Jones. So I get to do the commercials. We have many things and I was going to start off with the Eye Foundation but since your committee chairman for the Eye Foundation saw fit to leave the room, I ll wait. I don t want him to miss being embarrassed. I ve been informed that your new Grand Commander coming up will be sponsoring the trip to the Easter Pilgrimage in Washington DC next spring. It is a lovely trip and you ll have an enjoyable time. I encourage each of you to take that time. Everybody should do it at least once. This year, if you had been there, you would have been just a happy bunch of Iowa Sir Knights, because prior to the laying of the wreath by the Indiana Grand Commandery, there was a middle school that laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier from Knoxville, Iowa. You would have really enjoyed that because those young children were very good. It made me feel good, being an ex-iowian, being able to see that and shame on you for missing it. Each year, they do things like that. It s a two-day trip from the state of Iowa because of the transportation laws for bus drivers. I encourage you to back your Grand Commander in that effort and go, because you will not be sorry. (June

73 2001) Commandery of the State of Iowa 73 I would like to address the Knight Templar magazine. Now everyone in this room should be getting the Knight Templar magazine. Is there anyone in here who isn t receiving it on a regular basis? Excellent. This tells you that over the years your Grand Recorders, the three that you had and currently have, are doing their job. The Grand Recorder has to stay on top of those of you who are not getting the magazine. I have an at home that I received from a Sir Knight in Alaska. He has been a Sir Knight for over 12 years. He used to get the magazine regularly but for the last seven years, he hasn t been getting it. And, you know, it s not a simple process to track down why he s not getting it. Of course, then he turns around, he moves from Alaska to Arkansas so we re still trying to track that down. The magazine is the excellent tool for your Grand Commander to communicate with the Sir Knights in the state. A lot of times, it looks to me as I read some of these articles from different Grand Commanderies, they are using it more as an obituary than communicating what s going on. If you heard your Grand Commander talk about it yesterday. If you have something going on in your district, your part of the state, that no one else is going to know about, send it to him. Because you ve got space to put that in there, you ll have the opportunity to get your message across to all the Knights in the state of Iowa. You might even be able to drive some Coloradoans back for some special events going on. I don t live all that far away and I got after the fact that Washington had a school of instruction and inspection meeting last spring. That s not that far away from me and my car knows how to go. It s never stopped. Get those items in there. It is an excellent tool. It s the center page in the magazine. You don t even have to look for it. Just flop it open and there it is. If you really want to be surprised sometime, look at the centerfold picture. You look at magazines for the centerfold, you look for the pictures to see what s in store for you. That s the way you want to look at your magazine. Open it up, centerfold ah, there we are. For those of you that don t get out very often, it might show you what the Grand Commander looks like. If his picture is in there, you ll be able to meet him and address him properly when you see him. We know in this state, we don t have that problem. He s very busy all the time. I would like to encourage you to attend the North Central Department Conference this year. It s going to be in South Sioux City, Nebraska. So keep that in mind. It s going to be at the Marina Inn in South Sioux City, Nebraska and I encourage each of you to be there. It will be October 26 and 27, come early and stay late. Enjoy your companionship with your brothers. Of course, I m going to be encouraging you to go to the one next year too, because that will be the one the Grand Encampment is responsible for. Hopefully, we will get that information to you by the time we go to South Sioux City, Nebraska. Since I have become Grand Encampment s representative to this department, I have initiated a newsletter. I send the newsletter out over . It s a lot cheaper that way and a lot quicker. Everybody gets it almost instantaneously that way. The only problem is not everyone has . I have to encourage those of you who have and your fellow brothers and Sir Knights who don t have it, that you share your copy with them. I know that in this room there are a lot of people who have that I do not have an address for. I would sure like to have yours if you have it and you want to receive the North Central Department newsletter. So give it to me before you leave today. I can probably get your Grand Recorder to throw a sheet of paper out there so you can up and write your name and your address on it. Of course, I m prejudiced. I know is great. I know about some of the people who have been receiving it lately. Does anyone in here have the opportunity to read it? We ve put out three so far. It s a way we can communicate what s going on around the North Central and some of these other items that you re going to be hearing about over the years. We have went through many different methods of membership during this conclave so far. And every one of them seems to work. And that s good. How you do it in your state or how you do it as a Commandery, if it s working for you, just make it work harder. Because that s what we need more members. During the triennium of our Most Eminent Past Grand Master, James Morris Ward, he had a pin for the candidate and a pin for the top-line signer. The top-line signer pin was the small version of his Grand Master s emblem for the year. Our Most Eminent Grand Master, William Jackson Jones, has also got a pin now that is going to work for us. On this side you ll find the Malta cross which will be for the candidate. He ll get to wear that. Over here, showing the four bodies of the York Rite Mason, is the top-line signer s pin. Now there will be a certificate that will go with this pin to the candidate. We seem to be having a little difficulty getting these things out right now because you all probably heard that Charles Richard Newmann, the Right Eminent Grand Recorder, is under the weather with his health again. It will probably be a little bit later, but keep your recorder on his toes. If you sign a candidate, keep on him to get with the Grand Encampment office and get the pins and certificates. You don t want to come up short. Anybody that gets a candidate deserves the pin to wear. And the candidates, we need to know who they are during this triennial. I ll pass this around. It s a beautiful pin. The candidate as well as the top-line signer will be proud to wear it.

74 74 Proceedings of the Grand (June And when you get it (the sample), if you flip it over and look on the back, you will see the pin that is the triennium pin, designed by Sir Knight Jones for triennium conclave. It s a beautiful pin too. He is a railroad buff. He owns his own train set in his backyard. So, you have the Grand Master s emblem on the cow catcher. It s a great looking pin. As you know, the triennium is going to be held in St. Louis, Missouri. Our Most Eminent Past Grand Master Blair Mayford made such a hit in St. Louis that our Grand Master says there s nothing in Illinois that s going to compare to this so he went back to St. Louis. There is a place, when you go you be sure to bring your uniform, because they already have a parade permit. He didn t tell us where we are going to parade from but I hope it s all downhill. So it is a wonderful opportunity to bring your uniform. Now we ve had other reports. The Holy Land Pilgrimage and Educational Foundation but on the term of membership, we have a Grand Encampment website where individuals can register if they are interested in gaining information about the York Rite or about Masons in particular. The way that system works, our Past Grand Commander, Past Department Commander Garnes in Pennsylvania sends me the people from Illinois. I have the opportunity to appoint people from the different states. In Iowa, Glenn Marshall is my point of contact because our s are flowing back and forth like the post office. They will send him any contact in Iowa then he will get with individuals close to that individual s home, Commandery, Blue Lodge or whatever depending on what they need and provide them with the information. You, as the individuals, may get the opportunity to contact them. Of course, that puts you closer to the top-line signers again. So the system seems to be working quite well. Keep in mind, if Glenn calls, sends you an or writes you a letter, tells you that he has this information on this individual, we d like to have him checked out and see what you can do about making a Mason out of him or a York Rite Mason, whichever the case may be. We appreciate that. And it looks like he s not going to come back into the room and that s too bad, because he got a shot at me last night. He s been your Eye Foundation Chairman for the last four or five years. Before that I used to kid him a lot. We have this running battle. The only time I cheer against Iowa is when they are playing Illinois. He swore to me, he said, We re going to beat Illinois. And I told him, You re gonna get out of bed early. Well, the sneak pulled a fast one. He held all the money until the end and snuck it in. You Sir Knights in Iowa have done a marvelous job of supporting the Eye Foundation in the last few years. When I got my final report, which is supposed to be the final report, I was really having trouble with my chapeau fitting on my head. As he stated last night, in the North Central Department, we have three Commanderies in the top ten. Of course, he was just elated that he was nine and Illinois was ten. Glenn has done an excellent job and I encourage you all to keep up the good work. In my opinion, Iowa doesn t receive as much as credit as they should be getting, because not included in that $33,000 that he turned in this year, is the money that is paid directly to the University of Iowa to Dr. Stone for the eye research. And that s too bad that it isn t published more. Whether they put in the news for the world to see is one thing, you as Iowans know that you re doing one hell of a great job with the Eye Foundation. Now who in here doesn t wear glasses or contacts? Most everyone in here has some form of an eye ailment. One day, through our money and our contributions, the whole problem with eyes will be remedied and we won t have to worry about the eye doctors. They can look for work. There aren t as many of them as there are us blind people. Keep up your good work. Whether you get recognition for your contributions to the research at the University of Iowa in the newspaper, that s one thing. But you know in your heart you ve done a great job. At the present time, our Most Eminent Grand Master has scheduled another tour into the Holy Land in December. When we last spoke it appeared that they are going to change his tour to the Holy Land to Greece. Because of the uncertainly in the Holy Land at this point in time, they are looking into converting that trip from the Holy Land to Greece. We want to encourage you to take the trips when you get the opportunity. The Holy Land is a magnificent place. It is well worth the time and effort you put into it. I m sure Greece will be just as good. But the real effort in the Holy Land is the number of ministers you see in the use of it. I was informed yesterday that one of the ministers had made a speech at one of the Commanderies. And that s the thing to do. You sent four last year. So use those people. Get them out to talk about it. It s amazing how motivating they are once they come back and give the speech. So keep up the good work. It seems that a report I received is your Education Foundation is becoming over-burdened with the amount of funds they have. Each of you probably know some worthwhile young person who is in their junior or senior year of college or during post-degree work that could use some extra help. You can t beat the rates. Help out the chairman of the Education Foundation. If you don t know who that is call your Grand Recorder. He ll get you the information. It s another good job for him. Your Grand Recorder is overworked. He ll tell you that, but keep it up.

75 2001) Commandery of the State of Iowa 75 Right Eminent Grand Commander, on behalf of my lady, Pat, myself and all the Sir Knights, both visitors and Iowa Knights, we want to thank you for excellent hospitality, all the courtesies that have been extended to all of us. We appreciate it. We ve enjoyed it. And I know we are looking forward to every conclave in Iowa because they continue to get better. Anyplace you go, they always get better because they learn from the past. Thank you Sir.
