1 Winter, 2011 Volume 1, Issue 3 Scottish Rite News Brings in 6 New Scottish Rite Masons The received six new members during the Fall degree season. Aaron P. Hughes Lodge of Perfection exemplified the 4, 9, and 14, and Oriental Council, Princes of Jerusalem conferred the 15 on the following candidates: Ryan B. Gartley, David O. Hunt, Jon A. Rhan, Edward M. Waible, Gregory R. Bean, Pascal H. Corbinand, as well as two courtesy candidates from the Valley of Concord: David B. Young and Edward M. Donnelly. Congratulations to all for beginning their journey in Scottish Rite. Make a point to welcome them at our Chapter and Consistory degrees. About the Scottish Rite Bodies There are four Bodies within Scottish Rite, each responsible for some of the 29 degrees we perform. The Lodge of Perfection has the duty of presenting the 4 to 14, and the Council of Princes of Jerusalem presents the 15 and 16. Both bodies perform degrees in the Fall and again in the Spring. Members of a Lodge of Perfection must see the 4 and the 14, as well as one other degree from 5 to 13, prior to seeing the Council degrees. This gives members 8 more degrees to come back and witness. The Council of Princes of Jerusalem normally presents the 15 in the Fall and the 16 in the Spring. Members must see one of these degrees. See the article about the performance of the 16 this Spring which is being presented as a Table Lodge, called the Feast of Darius. In the Spring, the Chapter of Rose Croix and Consistory also exemplify their degrees. The Rose Croix degrees are the 17 and 18. Members must see the 18, before receiving the degrees in Consistory. The Chapter of Rose Croix also presents the Feast of the Paschal Lamb, a semi-public memorial service, which occurs once every two years, remembering our departed Brethren. The service will be held this year on Palm Sunday, April 17, by St. George Chapter at the Masonic Temple in Nashua. A roast lamb dinner will be served prior to the service. Consistory is responsible for presenting the 19 to 32, and will perform one from 19 to 30, as well as the 31 and 32. This Spring, New Hampshire Consistory will perform the 22, Prince of Libanus. Last performed in 2005, this is a singing degree, requiring its cast members to not only be able to act, but also to carry a tune. You won t want to miss this truly unique performance. Aronson, Valley of Portsmouth/Dover; Karl H. Bickford, M.S.A., Valley of Nashua; Paul M. Leary, Valley of Concord; Gary E. Roy, M.S.A., Valley of Concord; and Treffley E. Sage, M.S.A.,. Fall Consistory Outings a Success NH Consistory hosted two events for Scottish Rite Masons this fall. If you didn t make it to either, you missed out on two great nights. In November, members and their guests spent an enjoyable and informative evening at the McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center in Concord. The evening started with seeing the International Space Station fly overhead. Then all were treated to an enlightening show in the Planetarium, free time to view all the exhibits in the newly expanded Center, and a trip to the observatory to look through telescopes at the night sky. The expert staff was helpful, answering questions clearly and in simple terms. In December, we saw Boston Ballet s performance of The Nutcracker at Boston Opera House. Transportation was provided, bringing everyone right to the Opera House. All were able to make their own arrangements for dinner. For those who wanted to eat together, a private room was set aside across the street, at the Hyatt-Regency. Our seats for the show were in the center of the Orchestra section, and all were settled in their seats in time for the performance. After a world-class show, the motor coach brought folks back to their cars, while melodies of the season still played in many of our heads. Watch for more events coming in the Spring. New 32 Masons to Receive Valley Jewel A new jewel has been selected to be presented to all Scottish Rite Masons who receive the 32 beginning with our April 30, 2011 Reunion. 4 Page 4 Scottish Rite News New Scottish Rite Logo Unveiled Supreme Council has created a new logo for the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction. We will still use the double-headed eagle, but in an effort to better identify ourselves as members of the Masonic Fraternity, the new logo prominently displays the word FREEMASONS on it. The new emblem will be used in all material going out to the public. The traditional emblem is not going away, however. It will still be around for a number of things. Which you see will depend on the audience and the intended use. New Name for Children s Dyslexia Centers The Nashua and Seacoast Learning Centers have a new name. The Board of Directors for all the Learning Centers changed their name in December from 32nd Degree Masonic Learning Centers for Children, Inc. to Children s Dyslexia Centers, Inc. The official names of the two centers are now Children s Dyslexia Center of Nashua and Children s Dyslexia Center Seacoast Learning Center. Donations may be made out to Children s Dyslexia Centers, Inc. For donations to a specific center, you may list Nashua or Seacoast in the memo field, or make checks out in the name of that center. You may also abbreviate them to either CDC Nashua or CDC Seacoast Learning Ctr. Nominations Sought for Masonic Service Medal Our last issue highlighted two new medals from Supreme Council. One of those, the Medal for Masonic Service may be awarded to a Brother Mason who fully embodies the tenets of the Masonic fraternity even if he is not a member of the Scottish Rite. This award is generated at the local level and is based on the recommendation of three of the Brother s peers. Contact the Deputy, Ill Richard W. Elliot, 33, the Active, Ill Mark C. Roth, 33, or Active Emeriti Members Ill Philip L. Hall, 33, or Ill Robert E. Hansen, 33, to recommend a worthy Brother; or contact your Valley Secretary with the recommendation.
