Purpose Statement of the Southwestern Washington Synodical Women s Organization The purpose of this synodical women s organization shall be to assist congregational and inter-congregational units within its territory to fulfill the purpose of Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Convention Highlights Those of us who attended the 29th annual convention of the Southwestern Washington Synodical Women s Organization hosted by Bethel Lutheran Church, Brush Prairie, WA experienced a very inspirational event. Here are encouraging comments that attendees shared on the evaluation form. Regarding our guest speaker, Pr. Jillian Ross: Awesome energy. She was fantastic. Fabulous speaker-down to earth, fun and such insight into God s spirit. Amazing. A great message. Wonderful speaker with great life experience stories. Drew me in right away. She kept it moving along. Excellent! Thoughtprovoking. Pastor Jill is fabulous. I enjoyed her spirit and energy so much. She encouraged us to think outside our box. Appreciated her insight and her upbeat message on experience, discernment and suggestions for being patient through prayer. What a delight! Would be interested in hearing her again. How can WELCA have another event featuring Jillian? Regarding the Churchwide Representative, Ely Smith: Best I ve heard. Good illustration with candy. So down to earth, respectful and positive. Ely Smith did a wonderful job of subbing for Lynette Todd. Best ever! Thank you, Ely, for joining us! Good review and learning process. Very informative. Best explanation of churchwide I ve ever heard. Outstanding presentation. Regarding the Food: Excellent dinner, lunch and hospitality table. Awesome. Terrific. So generous and wonderful. Thank you! Very good. Good selections both days. Great food. Beautiful setting. Perfect! Outstanding. Oh my! Fabulous-can you share the meatball recipe? Loved the tablecloths-labors of love. Couldn t be better! Wonderful. Extremely excellent! It was excellent. Thank you to the ladies of Bethel. The best I can remember in a long time. Regarding the Schedule for the Event: Good. Kept us busy the whole time. Nice time for fellowship too! Time for friendship and sharing. Easy to follow. Wonderful, relaxed schedule. Loved the layout of the whole event. Very thoughtfully prepared. I like the two workshop sessions and two main speaker sessions of a two day convention. All in all, this proved to be a wonderful experience The food staff was great. The hospitality of the Bethel women was so warm, welcoming and caring. There were great vendor choices and displays. The praise team was superb! Thank you so much, Bethel women and men! 1

5 From Beth Lindell, SWO Treasurer Treasurer s Report Many thanks to the following units who have sent in offerings: Peace, Puyallup; Trinity, Tacoma; St. Mark, Lacey; First Lutheran Community, Port Orchard; Mountain View, Edgewood; Elim, Port Orchard; Beautiful Savior, Vancouver; Bethany, Longview; Family of Christ, Vancouver; Vinland, Poulsbo; St. Paul, Vancouver. Your continuing offering support assures that we can continue to present great programming such as our annual convention and Bible study events. As always, one half of all offerings received get passed on to Churchwide WELCA. Speaking of the convention, thanks to all for your most generous gifts to the offering and the jar raffle. The convention offering totaled $1,730. One half went to Churchwide WELCA ($865) and one half ($865) went to RockSolid Community Teen Center in Brush Prairie, Washington. A thank you note from the RockSolid executive director, Marcy Sprecher, says our donation will definitely make a difference in the lives of the youth they serve. The jar raffle took in $445. One half of that amount ($222.50) went to Friends of the Carpenter, a non-profit, faith-based day facility that serves vulnerable members of the community, and the other half stayed in our SWO account. Thanks to the Bethel Lutheran Church women [and men] for all their hard work in making the 2018 Convention a huge success. At the after-convention board meeting, your board voted to send $250 to Lutheran Disaster Relief to help with hurricane relief and we previously approved a donation of $500 to Katie s Fund in honor of our wonderful Carol Fossum. Finally, congratulations to Kathy Ifft, who was elected your new treasurer at the convention. She will take over at the start of the new fiscal year, February 1, Her name should be familiar to you as she has been a previous board member and treasurer and is the current retreat registrar! 5 SW WA SWO Board Meeting Highlights From Jeanne Patterson, Secretary The Southwestern Washington Synodical Women s Organization held a retreat November 1-3, 2018 at Ocean Shores, Washington. Board members (new and old) gave introductions and shared bios about themselves to get to know one another. Goals of the board for 2019 were reviewed. Upcoming events and meeting dates were set for the coming year Policy and procedures, the Synodical Leaders Guide and job descriptions of each position on the board were reviewed. The gathering was a time for learning and teaching along with personal time to share with one another. The next board meeting will be held after the January 5, 2019 Bible study event to be held at Trinity Lutheran Church in Parkland, Washington.
