3 2011 SOUTHWESTERN WASHINGTON SYNOD ASSEMBLY WORKSHOPS SESSION 1 1:45 2:30PM GOD S BUSINESS: CONGREGATIONS AS NON PROFIT BUSINESSES Jim Hushagen and Monica Hurley Northwest Territory Salon B Our synod s mission is empowering congregations to grow. Much vital growth in our communities is in the4 non profit sector schools, museums, hospitals, etc. What best practices are these nonprofit businesses using to grow? What can our congregations learn from growing, mission driven organizations? Synod Vice President Jim Hushagen ahs spent 30 years as a board member for nonprofits like PLU, Thrivent and Good Samaritan Hospital, and advises non profits in his law practice. Monica Hurley used her 14 years in PLU admissions and development to start Philanthropy 1 st, a consulting business for nonprofits. Come to this workshop and learn how these Synod Council members have adapted good non profit business practices into keys to growing congregations. THE ELCA TODAY: FROM NEW STRUCTURE TO NEW STARTS Rev. Mary Frances Northwest Territory Salon A Rev. Frances will share how the new structure of the ELCA churchwide offices supports the key initiatives of the ELCA and the work of starting new congregations. She will discuss the vital ministries of the ELCA particularly the way that new, innovative models for ministry are driving new congregations across the country. Bring your curiosity and questions you may have about the work of the ELCA. WHAT IS PARISH NURSING AND WHY DOES MY CONGREGATION NEED ONE? Nancy Haughee, RN Northwest Territory Salon C This workshop will inform participants how a Parish Nurse in their congregation can help them to focus on the church as a place of health and healing. God intends for us to be healthy, that is, whole in body, mind and spirit. Health is a gift from God and to be good stewards, congregations need to encourage people to take responsibility for their own health and to be of service to their neighbor. The Parish Nurse woks with his/her pastor as well as with area hospitals, social service agencies and the community to focus on prevention, wholeness and wellness for the congregation and the community. Roles of the parish Nurse include Health Educator, Personal Health Councils, referral Agent, Trainer of Volunteers, Developer of Support Groups, Health Advocate and Integrator of Faith and Health. Lean how your church can benefit form having a Parish Nurse on staff.

4 BOOK OF FAITH Rev. Sigi Helgeson and the Book of Faith Team Chehalis Ballroom Salon E This workshop will give practical help and hands on resources that will help your congregation to engage the Bible through the Book of Faith Initiative. Come and hear how congregations have been revitalized through The Book of Faith initiative. FINANCIAL WELLNESS AS AN EXPRESSION OF FAITH Members of the Synod Stewardship Table Chehalis Ballroom Salon F Discipleship is an expression of workshop and spiritual wellness. Giving is an important aspect of our lives as Christ s disciples called to participate in God s work into world. This workshop will offer participants an outline and format in which to frame a conversation for a congregational event in which people re imagine how their offering and giving connects with god s mission in their congregation, community and world. Based on a symposium The Arm of Christ offered at Mountain View Lutheran Church in Edgewood, the vision presented may serve as a model for similar events conducted in congregations elsewhere. Participants will be offered forum outline and PowerPoint slides that they can adapt for use in their own ministry settings. A LITURGICAL HEALING MINISTRY IN THE PARISH Rev. Dr. Craig Satterlee Chehalis Ballroom Salon A,B,C This workshop will be an engaging conversation around a liturgical health ministry in the parish. Pastor Satterlee will tell interesting stories about his work in his parishes. THEOLOGICAL TRAINING OPTIONS IN SEATTLE Jan Cherry, DM Chehalis Ballroom Salon D If you are interested in following a call to rostered leadership in the ELCA (Pastor, Diaconal Minister, Deaconess, Associate in Ministry) or if you are just looking for a way to deepen your understanding of your faith and how it plays a part in your everyday life, you might want to check out the Ecumenical School of Theology and Ministry at Seattle University. One of the best kept secrets in the Northwest, the school has been training Northwest Lutherans, along with students from 12 other denominational partners, for ministry for 15 years. Jan Cherry, Diaconal Minister and staff at the School will be here to talk with you about the various offerings for theological learning that are taking place in Seattle.

5 SESSION 2 2:45 3:30PM ELCA DOMESTIC HUNGER GRANTS Beth Ann Johnson Northwest Territory Salon C Each year ELCA Domestic Hunger provides grants to agencies, churches and organizations throughout the US that battle hunger and poverty issues. But how do you apply for a grant? And what kind of projects get funded? Join us as we learn more about his process. Beth Ann is a successful grant writer for non profit agencies and will help you evaluate your current Domestic Hunger Grant application (it is due in July). Congregations and organizations that wish to apply for an ELCA Domestic Hunger grant may bring their application to this workshop for review. A LITURGICAL HEALING MINISTRY IN THE PARISH Rev. WALKING IN GOD S IMAGE: LIVING CREATIVE, RESOURCEFUL AND WHOLE Scott Willard, Lutheran Community Svcs NW Chehalis Ballroom Salon D This workshop will explore our being created to be creative, resourceful and whole. The balance of the workshop is a guided exploration into various aspects of our lives in order to create a well balanced, whole person perspective. Where there are gaps, participants will be encouraged to create small, reasonable, attainable goals and action steps. Scott Willard is the Central Oregon Area Director for Lutheran Community Services NW, a Life Coach, Baptist Minister, a Certified Drug and Alcohol Counselor II, and Organizational Designer.

6 TRANSFORMING BURNOUT Dr. Alan Shelton, MD Chehalis Ballroom Salon E In this workshop, Dr. Shelton shares the story of his journey through burnout to recovery of enthusiasm. Participants will learn about what burnout is, the many reasons for burnout, and most importantly, a strategy to deal with chronic stress. The gift of spirituality will be explored as the primary resource for dealing with burnout. SELF CARE FOR THE CAREGIVER Patricia Witt, AIM, Lutheran Community Services NW Chehalis Ballroom Salon F Beginning with The Wholeness Wheel, the group will look at how busy caregivers can give better care by looking out for their own well being, including their spiritual/worship life. Participants will share successes and struggles in a confidential setting. Pat Witt, AIM, Caregiver University Director at Lutheran Community Services NW in Tacoma and on the roster of this synod. She is also a family caregiver for two sisters with disabilities and an aging mother, so understands the stresses and time limitations caregivers face. SPIRITUAL DIRECTION AS SPIRITUAL WELLNESS Rev. Paul Hermansen Northwest Territory Salon B Spiritual Direction is a wonderful opportunity to share our story with someone who can hold us in our growing in wholeness with God and others. We will discover what spiritual direction is through an encapsulation of Luke 24: 13 35, talk about the purposes of spiritual direction, what to look for in a spiritual director, and have a question period.

7 Fitness Activities to do around the Centralia/Chehalis area: WALKING TRAIL AT RIVERSIDE PARK Trail: Riverside Loop Length: 4/10 mile Surface: Concrete Directions: 7 miles from Great Wolf Lodge. Take a right out of the Great Wolf Lodge parking lot and take I 5 heading South toward Portland. Take the Harrison Ave Exit, #82, toward Factory Outlet Way. Turn left onto Harrison Ave, then left onto Lowe Street. The park entrance is next to Panda Restaurant along Harrison Ave. The walking trail at Centralia s Rotary Riverside park is a half mile loop that goes around the park and along the Skookumchuck River for a short stretch. It is a good place to get a quick nature fix right in the middle of the city. DISCOVERY TRAIL ALONG THE CHEHALIS RIVER Trail: Discovery Trail Length: 1.5 miles Surface: Crushed gravel Directions: About 10 miles from Great Wolf Lodge. Take a right out of the Great Wolf Lodge parking lot and take I 5 heading South. Take the Harrison Ave Exit, #82, toward Factory Outlet Way. Follow west (toward Ford s Prairie) through Galvin Road intersection (traffic signal) and 1.5 miles farther to Goodrich Road on left. Follow Goodrich Road to its end, past the Wastewater Treatment Plant to gate and parking area on right. Trail begins at gate. Please remember that the Trail is adjacent to a private, working farm.. Stay on the trail and give farm equipment the right of way. The Discovery Trail follows the bank of the Chehalis River for over a mile. SEMINARY HILL NATURAL AREA Trail: Seminary Hill Length: various trails with a total length of 2.5 miles. Directions to Trailhead and parking: About 10 miles from Great Wolf Lodge. Turn right out of the Great Wolf Lodge parking lot to I 5 heading South, exit #82. turn left on Harrison which becomes W. Main St. Left onto N. Buckner St. and 2 nd Right onto Davis. Turn slight right onto Seminary Hill Road. Amenities located at park: Natural areas, open space, parking, primitive trails, interpretive signage. This 73 acre urban natural area occupies hilltop property overlooking Centralia, the Chehalis and Skookumchuck River valleys and the municipal water reservoirs on Seminary Hill Road.

8 BORST PARK TRAIL Trail: Borst Park Length: 2 miles Surface: Compacted gravel Directions: Take 1 5 Exit #82. Trail is a figure 8 shape that meanders around Borst Lake, past the dog park, rhododendron gardens to the Borst Historic Home. It continues past the boat launch on along Bryden Ave and through the new sports complex where it returns to the lake loop.

Rainier Conference Name: Mary Louise Petersen Occupation: Retired Educator Past Elected/appointed synodical experience: Personal/Congregational Experience: Church Council, Call Committee and 20 years as a Sunday School teacher. Public school administrator at middle and high school level. Seven years as Executive Director of Human Resources in the Sumner School District. Why I wish to serve: I have the gifts and experiences that would help me serve in this role with grace and with respect to all those involved. Rainier Conference Name: Connie Shines Occupation: Teacher Past Elected/appointed synodical experience: As a teen, I served on the Diversity Committee of the Lutheran Youth Organization and was a multicultural Officer. Why I wish to serve: I am able to work well with committees, challenging members to collaborate, think deeply about provocative and/or controversial topics working toward a fair and meaningful outcome for all. Why I wish to serve: I wish to become deeper involved with the workings of the Synod. I enjoyed my time serving on the Synod Council in Eastern WA/Idaho Synod and now hope to serve our Synod with the same enthusiasm. Served on Synod Council for Personal/Congregational Experience: Life long Lutheran (NY, CA, then WA), always active in congregations; ordained in Have served 2 congregations in full time calls and 6 congregations in interim ministry. Why I wish to serve: I want to see the work of the synod done well and shared with the congregations clearly. Together we are the church n Southwestern Washington and I want to do all I can to strengthen that ministry and mission.

14 2011 Synod Bylaw Change: S7.22 is the constitutional section that supports the bylaw change S S7.22. The synod may establish processes that permit retired ordained ministers, associates in ministry, retired deaconesses, and retired diaconal ministers, on the roster of this synod to serve as voting members of the Synod Assembly, consistent with bylaw *S7.21.c. above. The synod may establish processes that permit ordained ministers, associates in ministry, deaconesses and diaconal ministers who are on leave from call, or those designated as disabled, on the roster of the synod to serve as voting members of the Synod Assembly, consistent with * S7.21.c above. If the synod does not establish processes to permit the rostered leaders, specified above to serve as voting members, they shall have voice but not vote in the meetings of the Synod Assembly. S S Retired ordained ministers on the roster of the synod shall serve as voting members of the Synod Assembly providing notice is given to the bishop no later than three months prior to the Synod Assembly of the intention to serve in order to permit compliance with provisions of *S7.21.c. above. 15 2011 RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT of 1000 MISSION FRIENDS WHEREAS, we who live in the beautiful Pacific Northwest also live in one of the world s great mission fields where most of our neighbors are unchurched; and WHEREAS, the starting of new missions and the care of existing congregations in the form of renewal are the strategic priorities of the SWWA Synod Council; and WHEREAS, we are a Great Commission church; and WHEREAS, we have several Synodically Authorized Worshipping Communities and a Congregation Under Development including Living Stones Prison Congregation, Shelton; Peace Lutheran Fellowship, Port Ludlow; Light of Grace Korean Church, Federal Way; Federal Way Chinese Fellowship, Federal Way; and St. Christopher s Community Church, Olympia as well as several potential redevelopment sites within the Southwestern Washington Synod; and WHEREAS, "1000 Mission Friends" has developed gifts in excess of $85,000 in support of mission with a continuing goal of providing a minimum of $100,000 annually in additional, immediate direct support for our mission; therefore be it RESOLVED, that the Outreach Board and the Synod Council of the Southwestern Washington Synod of the ELCA continue to develop and promote the "1000 Mission Friends" appeal, increasing the number of friends who contribute a gift of at least $100 annually in support of mission starts and the renewal of congregations in our synod, and be it further RESOLVED, that the recipients of these funds be encouraged to match partnership gifts; and be it further RESOLVED, that the disbursement of these gifts be managed by the Southwestern Washington Synod Outreach Board with the approval of the Southwestern Washington Synod Council. 16 2011 Synod Assembly Southwestern Washington Synod HUNGER AWARENESS WHEREAS, 963 million people in the world, one in seven, go to bed each night hungry, living on wages less than $1.00 per day; and WHEREAS, 146 million of the world s children under age 5 are underweight, severe malnutrition being the primary cause of the deaths of more than half of the 10.1 million children in the world who die each year; and WHEREAS, 35.5 million people, including 12.5 million children, experience hunger in this country where many families skip meals, eat too little, or go a whole day without food; and WHEREAS, Agencies assisting the hungry in this country have been stretched to the limit in their attempts to provide emergency food assistance to those in need; and WHEREAS, Jesus clearly called us to feed the poor, give drink to the thirsty; to befriend the stranger and clothe the needy (Matthew 25:34-35); be it RESOLVED, that the congregations of the Southwestern Washington Synod renew and revitalize their attention to hunger issues in the world and in their own communities through education, discussion and increased awareness of gifts to ELCA World Hunger; and be it further RESOLVED, that each congregation in the Southwestern Washington Synod appoints one member to serve as the local contact for synod hunger awareness information and resources. 17 SUPPORT AND PARTICIPATION IN THE ELCA STRATEGY ON HIV AND AIDS WHEREAS, 33.2 million people are living with HIV and AIDS worldwide, 1.2 million of them residing in the United States alone. Each day, more than 6,800 people become HIV-positive and more than 5,700 die from AIDS; and WHEREAS, AIDS is the leading cause of death in sub-saharan Africa, resulting in 12 million children under the age of 18 having lost one or both parents to AIDS; and WHEREAS, HIV and AIDS has been named the single greatest reversal in human development in modern times; and WHEREAS, this church recognizes that the Body of Christ has AIDS and when one member of the body suffers we all suffer; and WHEREAS, prevention efforts are resulting in a decline in HIV infection rates in sub-saharan Africa and other parts of the world, and treatment is now available in developing countries for about $140 a year keeping parents alive to care for their children and prevent transmission of HIV from mother to child; and WHEREAS, poverty contributes to the spread of HIV and AIDS, hence, progress in all areas of development including primary education, gender empowerment and agricultural development is an effective tool in defeating it; and WHEREAS, the Church Council of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America has adopted the ELCA Strategy on HIV and AIDS, in which the ELCA seeks to respond faithfully and effectively to this pandemic by educating and empowering congregations and raising $10 million to advance Strategy goals; and therefore be it RESOLVED that this assembly challenges congregations of the Southwestern Washington Synod to familiarize themselves with the ELCA Strategy on HIV and AIDS, and to learn, serve, advocate and pray on behalf of those who are suffering as a result of the HIV and AIDS pandemic; and be it further RESOLVED that this assembly challenges each congregation of the Southwestern Washington Synod to set a 3-year fundraising goal in support of the ELCA Strategy on HIV and AIDS; and be it further RESOLVED that congregations be encouraged to help sponsor and pray for the work of Barbara Robertson of The Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, Olympia, serving with the ELCA Global Missions in Morogoro, Tanzania, combating HIV and AIDS; and be it further RESOLVED, that the Hunger Committee of the Southwestern Washington Synod will assist congregations in their work in addressing this resolution by providing ELCA educational, worship and devotional resources and speakers.
