1 Cedar Rapids Corvette Club B e y o n d t h e G l a s s February, 2017 From the President A Thank you goes out to VP Diane for conducting the January meeting. Linda and I took a 12 day, 4,100 mile loop through Oklahoma, New Mexico, Arizona and Texas. We had a great time in spite of some cool, windy, and sometimes snowy weather. The 51 degree temp with 20 mph winds did not keep me out of the pool in Tempe AZ the locals wearing heavy coats looked on in disbelief. Linda and I also did some disc sledding on the sand dunes at White Sands National Monument in New Mexico and enjoyed 80 degree temps with sunny skies for two days as we explored the Alamo and Riverwalk area of San Antonio. As some of you may recall, February is the anniversary month for the founding of the Cedar Rapids Corvette Club back in This was just ten years after the memorable year of 1953 which included such epic events as the introduction of the first Corvette, Swanson s sold their first TV dinner and the birth of your current club President. The club is now 54 years old and even though Linda and I have been members for only 8 of those years, we have really enjoyed our time as part of the CRCC family. We have met so many nice people and made new friendships. We have enjoyed club dinner cruises, Camp Courageous and leaf cruises as well as other events such as our annual smoked meat picnic, and the Halloween and Christmas parties. We are also glad to help out with homecoming parades and the car show each year. We have taken Corvette trips with our CRCC friends to Kentucky (Corvette factory, Museum, Bourbon Trail, Mammoth Cave) and also South Dakota (Badlands, Black Hills, Devil s Tower WY.) Linda and I feel that joining the CRCC really has made Corvette ownership so much more than just having a fun and exciting car to drive. Participating in the CRCC adds a whole new dimension of Corvette ownership with rewards of friendships, memories and community service. It s a lifestyle more than a car. Not many clubs last for 54 years. It is the people of this club willing to participate, volunteer, and do the work that keeps it going year after year for decades. I feel these same people are likely the ones who enjoy their club experience the most. At our 2017 Officer Transition meeting it was agreed that some form of recognition for years of membership in the club should be adopted. A committee will be formed to work on this. Stay tuned. While some of our members hide out in Arizona, Texas and Florida, we continue to be treated to a relatively mild winter. The days are definitely getting longer and in theory the worst of winter should be behind us. We will still have some weather setbacks, but its enduring winter that makes springtime and getting that Corvette out again more enjoyable. Safe travels and stay warm, Chris February, 2017 Beyond the Glass Page 1

7 Car show planning is underway! 2017 Cruisin' the Ave Charity Car Show Yes, it's that time again, when we start putting together our annual charity car show. Actually, there has been discussion and planning going on since the wrapping-up of our last show. A committee of 10 members was formed to investigate and decide on a new venue, due to the changes at Lindale Mall. Our show will be held on Saturday, June 10 th at Hawkeye Downs, this year and into the future, if all goes well. The Downs provides for a unique venue where cars will be parked on a race track, rather than in a parking lot. It will also provide a great deal of room for expansion and growth, as well as room for several vendor booths, adding interest and fun to the show. We hope to line up auto artists, pinstripers, sponsor demo areas as well as outside vendors of items for women and children. This new venue also provides an opportunity to have other events scheduled on the same date, providing a built-in audience that will benefit our show. HD wants us to be there, and promises to be a good partner with CRCC. We hold our autocross practices and sanctioned events there, as well as helping with their Wall of Fame Night at the track. The show will involve us even deeper as partners. The opportunities and benefits are many. Hawkeye Downs also provides a venue with clean and plentiful restroom facilities, visitor parking, a built-in p.a. system, Hy-Vee food service and lots of shaded seating area in the grandstand with a great view of all the vehicles parked around the 1/8 th, ¼ and ½ mile tracks. The committee intends to look at the possibility of having live entertainment at the show, such as a band. There are many things to consider with this new location. As always, we appreciate any and all comments, suggestions and questions concerning the show. You can contact any of the committee members: Dick Butschi, Wayne Martin, Pres. Chris Thompson, V-Pres. Diane Bowen, Al Willenborg, Lyle Knutson, Mark Hamer, John Schindler, Darrell Hatchel and Randy Sanders. We will try to keep members updated on the progress of the show. Our new venue We will also be getting out a sign-up list of job positions that need filling for the day of the show, but also some that need filling soon, such as prize solicitation and publicity. We urge all members - those active and those not-so, but could be to sign up, get involved and help to lighten the load of February, 2017 Beyond the Glass Page 7

8 everyone else. We will give a little insight of each job position, but none are very difficult or timeconsuming, we assure you. Newer members, this is a good time to get to know the veterans of the club, working alongside of them. It's a fun and satisfying opportunity to help others and adds to your personal enjoyment of the club. Thank you for your support and involvement. Your Car Show Committee opportunity to place ad items in the goodie bags. New this year (with more space), the business can set up a booth to display/sell their products. $500 sponsors will be displayed on the back of the show shirt. The front of the shirt is reserved for businesses making a considerably higher donation. If you are interested in a sponsorship, or know of a business that might be, please contact Dick Butschi at or captart66@fmtcs.com. Thank you! Car Show Sponsorships Needed! We are always looking for added support for our annual charity car show. We lose some from time-to-time, as will happen. This includes trophy class sponsorships where $75 per class, will get the business name on 3 trophies, photos on our display board at the show, as well as an advertising plug at the awards ceremony, and an opportunity to have ad items included in our 250 goodie bags for entrants. Major sponsorships are also available for more money - $350 for club members, $500 for nonmember businesses. This minimum fee will get the business logo on the approximately 300+ show t-shirts that go to vehicle entrants in the 250 goodie bags. The business receives 5 free shirts, photos on the display board and the February, 2017 Beyond the Glass Page 8
