2 What I really want to say... Our January sermon series developed out of a change to the structure of our Discover Community class. You can read more about that on page 3 but Rev. Ryan and I agreed it would make a great sermon series to kick off the new year so over the next 5 weeks leading up to Lent, we ll be exploring how we are building our community with these expectations. EXPECT COMMUNITY: welcome, care, challenge, disappointment (yes, that s a hard one now isn t it?), and growth. These are the building blocks for all we hope to do this year together. And how can we do some of these things better? I m asking each of you to pray about how you can be a part of this? First up, expect welcome. How can we better invite and welcome folks to join us on this journey? We ve been advertising on a local radio station all during December. It s the Bridge Correction: we've been underwriting-support messages. The Bridge is an NPR-affiliate station dedicated to independent music, specifically the local music community. This seems to fit with what our executive committee created as a vision of ministry for itself and our staff as we navigate this year: we are called to grow as an inclusive community of independent thinking Christians willing to be challenged by each other and our faith. Folks who listen to the Bridge are certainly independent thinkers. This is no top-40 auto-tuned music station. Since coming live onto the KC radio waves 3-years ago, the Bridge has been trying to offer a different kind of formatting. They are doing things differently and offering something unique for folks who are looking for something that isn t a pre-packaged, one size fits all concept. For me, at least, the music on the Bridge is soothing and yet challenging - it makes me think and feel in new and beautiful ways. And they are investing in their community with things like Give Back Fridays - each week featuring KC area organizations that are making a difference in our city and inviting their leadership into conversation on-air. I love that - don t you? And that seems that s what we are trying to do here at Community. Reaching new people with a message of community that makes them think and feel in new ways. And.let s be honest, that means some of us who have been around a while may need to think and feel in new ways too. I get it. (i.e., challenge...disappointment) And somewhere in all that our community will continue to grow and evolve into this next phase of our little building project. You re going to start seeing physical symbols of our construction (transformation) work this week. Hope to see you! May it be so, Rev. Available from Amazon or the church office. Discover Community Sunday January 21 9:30 am This short introduction to our congregation happens 4-6 times a year and Rev. Ryan would love to welcome anyone who is interested in learning more about our congregation - who we are and the things around which we center our life together. The hour together focuses on the 5 expectations of Community. It s a 5 finger exercise of sorts. The 5 finger exercise is historical idea from one of our Disciples foreparents, Walter Scott, to help children (and adults) learn about a life of faith. And that s what Ryan has done - reinvented our own 5 finger exercise. 7 Scripture for Sunday, January 7 Say: The scripture reading today is Mark 1:9-20 (CEB) Listen for God to speak: About that time, Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and John baptized him in the Jordan River. While he was coming up out of the water, Jesus saw heaven splitting open and the Spirit, like a dove, coming down on him. And there was a voice from heaven: You are my Son, whom I dearly love; in you I find happiness. At once the Spirit forced Jesus out into the wilderness. He was in the wilderness for forty days, tempted by Satan. He was among the wild animals, and the angels took care of him. After John was arrested, Jesus came into Galilee announcing God s good news, saying, Now is the time! Here comes God s kingdom! Change your hearts and lives, and trust this good news! As Jesus passed alongside the Galilee Sea, he saw two brothers, Simon and Andrew, throwing fishing nets into the sea, for they were fishermen. OVER ->

8 Come, follow me, he said, and I ll show you how to fish for people. Right away, they left their nets and followed him. After going a little farther, he saw James and John, Zebedee s sons, in their boat repairing the fishing nets. At that very moment he called them.
