It always feels like a kind of calm, ordinary time of year. No big national holidays. Nothing really major on the liturgical calendar. In fact, one of the ways that this season is referred to in the Christian Church is as Ordinary Time as it comes after all of the excitement of Resurrection Sunday and Eastertide, Ascension and Pentecost. Things get kind of ordinary and we slip into our summer routines. But some notable events have happened in June. June 1, 1619: the first black slaves arrived in Virginia. Who would have thought that our country would be founded on slavery, and that the seeds of prejudice and the civil rights movement were planted here, along with cotton? June 4, 1896: at 2:00 a.m., the first Ford rolled of the assembly line. Now there s something that has had an impact. June 7, 632: the prophet Mohammed died. Think of the impact on the world since that time, to this very day. June 10, 1935: Dr. Paul Smith and Bill Wilson founded Alcoholics Anonymous. Those twelve steps have saved the lives of many an alcoholic. June 14, 1968: Louise Bowles married Larry Cook. No one guy deserves to be that lucky for 45 years. June 15, 1215: the Magna Carta was signed by King John and democracy began, including our bill of rights. June 25, 1876: Custer s last stand; his defeat by Chiefs Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse, near the Little Big Horn River in Montana. June 27, 1880: Helen Keller was born, one the most truly remarkable women of all time. So there we are: the month of June. Slavery, assembly-line automobiles, Islam, the Magna Carta, June weddings, Bill Wilson, Helen Keller: all in the same month. All these events and all these real people not the manufactured, passing celebrity creations of today unknown and unheralded at the time, insignificant and unnoticed, a bit part on the world s stage. Yet how they have affected our lives! Jesus summoned his disciples. We don t know where; we don t know when. We do have twelve names, four or five we really know anything about. Jesus gave them all power, and he gave them a mission. And look at how these unknowns have affected our lives. So think about this during June. As you come to church each Sunday, seek something that will help you get through the next week. And let part of it be a reminder that we, who are unknown and unheralded in our time, have been summoned every bit as much as those twelve apostles. Summoned to make the world a better place for future generations, whether they know our name or not. Make your days count for Jesus. And may God continue to bless you and hold you close. 3 CONSISTORY MINUTES April 9, 2013 Present: Carl Hummel, Amy Wagner, Andrea Sammons, Pastor Cook, Jean Holden, Ralph Lengacher, Cara Beth Richardson, Tom Blanar, Karen Foster, Helen Tritt, David Cial Absent: Rachael Weigand, Chris Formet Secretary s Report: Secretary s report was reviewed and accepted. Treasurer s Report: Treasurer s report was reviewed and accepted. Pastor's Report: Pastor Cook will be on Vacation from May 7 th May 22 nd. The church now has 5 gas cards from Marathon for the Pastor to give to people in need. Old Business: The Search Process: The church profile is finished and given to Richard Plant. The Search Committee will meet with Rev. Plant on April 17 th and he is bringing new profiles of candidates. New Business: The lease contract for the office copier is up in September. The consistory received a memo from May, the secretary, and she is happy with the current copy machine company. Tom Blanar made a motion to go for a 63 month lease on a new machine. Cara Beth Richardson seconded the motion. The motion carried. There was a discussion on the current Bylaws of Emanuel UCC. A member of the congregation was asking questions and clarification about our constitution and bylaws. Pastor Cook cautioned the consistory to not change the bylaws until the new pastor is installed. There was discussion about posting pictures of youth events of our church on Facebook. There was a suggestion to get parental permission of the youth s parents before posting pictures. There was discussion about the need for help at the next baked steak dinner in May. Pastor Cook will pass sign-up sheets through the congregation during morning worship and there will be an article in the May newsletter listing the jobs needed to have a successful dinner. Standing Committees: Christian Education, Evangelism, Pastoral Relations, Stewardship & Missions: Did not meet Property The county has failed the church s septic system due to solids being passed into the catch basin. After talking to Mr. Hempel from the county, it was proposed that we install an offsite aerator system at the parsonage and monitor the church system in the future to see if it can handle the limited amount of water and septic the church uses. The property committee has already contacted Dan Arnold to come to the church and proposed plan to the county for the parsonage septic. Brad dragged the gravel in the parking lot so we can see if more gravel is needed. Music We had a wonderful resurrection Sunday of music. The bells and singers will perform a few more times before summer. Discussion was held about our CCLI license. There was a question on whether the worship service on the web site was covered under our CCLI license. Our web site is not for profit so the license covers the music on the web site. Elders Reviewed the joys and concerns of the congregation. The Elders made up a schedule for home communion and shut-in visitation during the interim process. The Next meeting is April 23 rd. AWE (After Worship Eaters) will not be meeting in June as our usual date falls on Father s Day. Spend time with those you love. Over 50 Fellowship: Those who attended our May meeting had a wonderful time of conversation. Thanks to those who attended. Our next meeting is Sunday, June 23rd at 6:30pm in the fellowship hall with light refreshments & an activity. Please see Jean G. or Lucy Rich if you would like to host. Special CUE Offering On Sunday, June 16 th, we will be taking a special offering for the CUE Seminaries. CUE stands for Chicago, United, and Eden, the three seminaries in the Midwest affiliated with the United Church of Christ. This offering will be distributed among the three seminaries to assist in theological education of future church leaders. This 4-hour class, which was taken by nearly 550,000 people in 2012, is the nation s first and largest classroom driver improvement course for motorists 50 and older. The cost is $12.00 for AARP members and $14.00 for non-members. No actual driving is required in taking the course and it may qualify participants for a lower rate of auto insurance. No tests are handed in. Trained volunteers conduct the sessions. The program provides practical techniques to compensate for normal changes in vision, hearing and reaction time that come with age, as well as training in defensive driving. Our objective right now is to see if there is enough interest to offer the course. If you think that you might be interested in having us offer the class, please fill in the interest sheet below and either drop it in the offering plate or hand it to the pastor. This is not a registration form or commitment.
