Spring is near the finish line and we re geared up for summer fun and excitement. Several of us are going to welcome in the summer months with a fishing trip to Garibaldi. A group of Masons from Washington 4, Ridgefield 237 and North Bank 182 gathered together in Trout Lake last month for a camp-out and climb up Mount Adams (see pictures on page 6 this Trestle Board). The mountain won this time but the fellowship was as strong as ever. Honors at the District 19 meeting in May were plentiful. The Grand Master s Achievement Award went to Brother Tim Kaftanic of Mount Hood Lodge, the Cecil Tackett Trowel Award went to W. Brother Dale Vrsalovich of Ridgefield Daylight Lodge and we got to watch a very memorable moment when V.W. Brother Jim Thompson presented the Hiram Award to W. Brother Leigh Cahill*. V.W. Brother Mark Sanders, D.D.G.M. District 19, presented the new Frank Sanders Travelling Gavel (see picture on page 2 this Trestle Board) to Washington 4. We had the most members attending the event. This gavel weighs in at just under 15 pounds and will be proudly displayed at every meeting throughout the year. The challenge to take it away is upon us. For those of you on Face Book, there is post on the gavel on the District 19 page. Grand Lodge is upon us in June with several lodge Brothers attending. Our last meeting in June will be the conferring of an Entered Apprentice Degree. And Brother Dean Roettger will be tendering up some good eats. Construction of the VMF at the Elks Lodge building will begin in June. When construction begins it will be necessary to refrain from wandering about the construction area. This is for the safety of everyone concerned. My brothers, it continues to be an honor and privilege to serve you and Washington 4 as the Worshipful Master. Thank you! *The presentation of the Hiram Award can be read on page 2 this Trestle Board. Worshipful Brother, David Rice

2 Hiram Award Presentation King Solomon s temple was built by the hands of many through the direction of our celebrated artist with divine guidance from the Great Architect of the Universe. In its splendor is found excellence in workmanship with geometric perfection symbolic of the individual we should all endeavor to be. The temple is one of the many symbols we as Free Masons embrace. Historically, King Solomon s temple was destroyed by Nebuchadnezzar when spiritual direction was lost only to be rebuilt by Zerubbabel. The contents of those temples lived on just as Free Masonry lives on today. Alas, at the hands of a spiritually misdirected source, our building on 78 th is no longer our temple. And our temple is being rebuilt through the enthusiastic strength of Free Masonry. This shall not be an easy task especially in today s society. One of the first obstacles to overcome is the difficulty in accepting reality. It takes fortitude and wisdom to take the lead in this step. Those who take the role of leadership at this junction demonstrate such traits. Alas, those same individuals are too often the target of nay-sayers and objections. Washington Four was fortunate to have an individual who assumed this role. One who held himself to the task and helped redirect our efforts just as Zerubbabel did. The Hiram Award is the highest honor which can be bestowed upon a Brother who has unselfishly given of his time, talents and energy for the betterment of his Lodge and Freemasonry. At our last installation of officers, the pillars of our craft Wisdom, Strength & Beauty were honored by recognizing special groups and individuals. I know of none better than the Brother who then represented the pillar of Wisdom, Very Worshipful Brother Jim Thompson, to assist me in making this special award today. Brother Jim, with the assistance of our Grand Master and District Deputy, would you through your extraordinary wisdom with brotherly love and affection present the Hiram Award to that individual who has unselfishly rendered to us his time, talent and energy for the betterment of Washington Four and Free Masonry? W.B. Leigh Cahill, center. Hiram Award recipient with from L to R. VW. Mark Sanders, Mw Donald Monks, VW Jim Thompson and WB. David Rice. The Traveling Gavel 2

3 Wise Words from our Immediate Past Master VANCOUVER CUP - Our premier event with brothers from Capilano Lodge No. 164 During our annual visit to Capilano Lodge No. 164 in March of 2015, Bro. David Minichiello shared his vision of extending the cement of Friendship and Brotherly Love through a friendly rivalry, visiting one another at MLS events between the Vancouver Whitecaps and the Portland Timbers. While the final naming of the event is yet to be ratified, I've referred to it as the "Vancouver Cup" for the purposes of this article. On Sunday, May 22, 2016, that vision became a reality. Our day started at Henry's Tavern, a short walk from Providence Park. After enjoying a bite and pint, we headed to the park to enjoy the game. Timber Joey sawed four slices from his log that day. The final score was 4-2, Timbers. After the game, a few of us stopped by Loowit for a pint before departing our separate ways. That pint of Shadow Ninja IPA was particularly refreshing! I suspect the same is true of the Stout VWB Mark enjoyed. To the victors go the spoils. The brothers from Capilano 164 buy the Washington 4 brothers a pint after. The second event will take place on October 23, 2016 at 1:00 PM at BC Place in Vancouver, B.C., where the Whitecaps and the brothers from Capilano will be looking for redemption. You will want to attend that event, as the Lodge winning the rivalry will be the recipient of a prize - as well as bragging rights (until the next season). Brothers in the stands. Pictured: (Top row) Larry, Gordon, Jan. (Bottom row) David, Mark Great Strides C.F. Walk Update. On Saturday, May 14th, 2016, Freemasons of Southwest Washington and about 300 other persons met at Esther Short Park for the annual Cystic Fibrosis Foundation GREAT STRIDES fundraiser to help fund research to improve and extend the lives of CF patients In spite of a forecast calling for rain the weather cooperated, with high clouds and mild temperatures. Levi's Team lead the 3.5k walk, as the top fundraising team, having raised $7,425 as of the day of the event. The Foundation reports preliminary figures of $56,000 raised. Thanks to Mt. Hood Lodge No. 32 and Washington Lodge No. 4 for funding sponsorship of the event. Thanks to WB David Rice and WB Fred Davis for volunteering to come to the park early to help the CFF Chapter with park set up. Thanks to WB Rob Hale for leading the grill crew, which consisted of: WB Jason Masuoka,WB Todd Dow, Bro. Larry Marks, and DeMolay Griffin Heimburg. And, thanks to each of the Freemasons in District 19 (including North and South), family, and friends who took time from your busy lives to participate in the event. WB Gordon Johnson, 3

4 Presented for your enjoyment, by W.B. Michael Bishop Secretary Washington Lodge 4 It's a previous Master's Minute from Enlightenment Lodge 228 Worshipful Master (yours truly). My Brothers, MASTER'S MINUTE, March 4, 2016 "Why through Symbols? The Most popular definition of Freemasonry states that it is "a System of morality, veiled in allegory and illustrated by symbols." Many a brother has asked "Why illustrated by symbols? Why not illustrated by plain statements of truth, completely defining the 'system of morality'?" There are many answers. Among them is the truth that definition limits what is defined. Seldom has this been better expressed than by that philosopher who asked "Do you believe in God?" His answer: "Define what you mean by God. And when you have defined, no matter what your definition, I shall reply 'No, I do not believe in God, because a God defined is a God limited, and a limited God is no God!" All mathematics are written in symbols, since our digits are symbols for quantities. Algebra used a symbol for a symbol, expressing quantities by letters, instead of numbers. In the algebraic equation "a + b = c" any quantity may be assigned to any one, or any two of the letters and the equation still be true. But note that the replacing of a symbol by a known quantity limits the equation. Go a step further and replaced two symbols by two quantities; write that 2 + b = 4 and the necessity for b as a symbol disappears; it can only equal 2. This soul or spirit comprehends a language which the brain does not understand. The keenest of minds have striven without success to make this mystic language plain to reason. When you hear music which brings tears to your eyes and grief or joy to your heart you respond to a language your brain does not understand and cannot explain. It is not with your brain that you love your mother, your child or your wife; it is with the Something Beyond; and the language with which that love is spoken is not the language of the tongue. A symbol is a word in that language. Translate that symbol into words which appeal only to the mind, and the spirit of the meaning is lost. Words appeal to the mind; meanings are expressed in words appeal to the spirit. It is thus seen that definition of a symbol limits its scope, and Freemasonry, by using symbols which are not closely defined, makes it possible for many men of many minds, each to read his own conception of the truth into the symbols. Freemasonry thus becomes as great a "System of morality" as the mind of him who attempts to understand it may admit. A Masonic historian wrote: "Freemasonry permits each individual to interpret and apply the lessons of the Craft as he sees best. It is this unique spirit of tolerance and freedom which frequently confuses opponents of the Fraternity. One Mason places his interpretation upon a certain symbol or attribute of Freemasonry; another may take an entirely different view, and will cite evidence with which a third may be in entire variance; yet these three men can gather about our altars and labor together in perfect amity. That Freemasonry conceals in symbols in order to arouse curiosity to know their meaning is often considered the only explanation. But there are many more lofty ideas of why this great system of truth, philosophy and ethics is hidden in symbols. As Masons we seek to enlighten both the spirit and mind May we always endeavor to be successful in our pursuit of understanding and teaching those symbolic lessons that transcend the mere language that we communicate them by. 4
