Brogan Evanson PROVO, Utah Building on the momentum captured in the regular season, BYU gymnastics will compete in the Mountain Rim Gymnastics Conference Championship Saturday night in Logan, Utah. Hopefully we go out to conference this Saturday and we hit our stride, BYU head coach Guard Young said. Going into conference, it s anyone s game. BYU came up with a season-high score on the floor, a , and Shannon Hortman, Angel Zhong, Natasha Trejo and Kyleigh Greenlief all logged new career highs during the meet. Hortman tied and earned new careers high on bars and beam, respectively, while Zhong set a new personal best on vault, Trejo on bars and floor and Greenlief on floor. This meet was a challenge for our girls, as this was the first time they competed in Friday/ Monday meets, but I was just really happy with the energy and the enthusiasm they had out here, BYU head coach Guard Young said. The crowd was fantastic they blew me away. Now we are just hitting the last bit of the season on a good, high note with this win. The Cougars kicked things off in the first rotation on the vault, and Mackenzie Douglas posted the high score of the team, tying her career-high She was followed by Zhong who scored a 9.825, a new career-high for her in the event. Jill van Mierlo scored a 9.800, tying her season-high, to equal Cheyenne Hill's earlier performance on the vault as the two rounded out the top scorers for the Cougars. BYU finished the rotation just behind SUU, with the Cougars earning a on vault to the Thunderbirds on uneven bars. BYU moved to uneven bars in the second rotation, which was highlighted by three Cougars scoring a 9.875: van Mierlo, Hortman and Trejo. Trejo s score was a career-high, while Hortman tied her career-best on the uneven bars. With those scores, and a from Jessie Westergard, BYU took the lead from SUU, to As the Cougars took on the beam, Hortman claimed a team-high score of 9.875, which was also a new personal best. 7 2017 COACHING STAFF Guard YOUNG BYU Head Coach 2015-Present A former BYU national champion gymnast and Olympic silver medal winner, Young enters his second year at the helm of the BYU gymnastics program. A member of the BYU Athletic Hall of Fame, he returned to his alma mater in May of Young came to BYU from the University of Oklahoma, where he was an assistant men s gymnastics coach from and In nine seasons at OU, Young was part of four NCAA championship teams (2002, 2003, 2005, 2015) and five NCAA runner-up teams (2001, 2004, 2012, 2013, 2014). Young s passion for gymnastics is equaled by his love for BYU. From 1996 to 2000, he was a member of the BYU men s gymnastics team, winning six All-America awards and two NCAA National Championships on the vault (1999, 2000). As a senior, Young was also the runner-up for the individual all-around at the 2000 NCAA Championships. He was inducted into the BYU Athletic Hall of Fame in From 2000 to 2004, Young was a member of the USA Senior National Gymnastics Team, winning a team silver medal at the 2001 World Championships in Ghent, Belgium, and a team silver medal the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece. As a junior gymnast, he trained under OU coach Mark Williams at the Bart Conner Gymnastics Academy in Norman, Oklahoma. Young earned the 1996 junior national champion title and three junior national team berths. Young graduated from BYU in 2001 with a Bachelor of Arts in communications with an emphasis in broadcast journalism. He and his wife, Alisha, have two boys and one daughter (Tyler, Jaxson, and Hadley). His father, Wayne Young, was a BYU gymnast from and captained the 1976 USA Olympic team.
