All Saints Eve or Halloween (October 31), All Saints Day (November 1) and All Souls Day (November 2) constitute the Autumn Triduum in the Western Christian tradition. These three days make up the season of Allhallowtide or Hallowmas. Halloween is a day of preparation prior to All Saints commemorating the saints and martyrs of the church. All Souls honors all the faithful departed. This season is a reminder of the vital link between the church militant on earth and the church triumphant in heaven. It gives practical expression to our affirmation of the communion of saints in the Apostles Creed. The Wisdom of Solomon is a book in the Old Testament apocrypha. A passage from Wisdom 3 has found its way into many funeral sermons over the years. Originally a commentary on Jewish martyrs, it is a rhapsody of hope for those who have died. But the souls of the righteous are in the hand of God, and no torment will ever touch them. In the eyes of the foolish they seemed to have died, and their departure was thought to be a disaster, and their going from us to be their destruction; but they are at peace. For though in the sight of others they were punished, their hope is full of immortality. Having been disciplined a little, they will receive great good, because God tested them and found them worthy of himself; like gold in the furnace he tried them, and like a sacrificial burnt-offering he accepted them. In the time of their visitation they will shine forth, and will run like sparks through the stubble. Those who trust in him will understand truth, and the faithful will abide with him in love, because grace and mercy are upon his holy ones, and he watches over his elect. As I read this passage, I always find the writer s sentiment encouraging and the imagery used striking. Our lives have real value. We are each known and loved by God. You are of infinite worth and all that you are echoes out into eternity. What Wisdom of Solomon points toward is realized fully in the resurrection of Jesus. Death does not foreclose entirely and completely on our lives. We are kept in and by the love of God whose passion for us is more fierce than the grave. Allhallowtide is a season, as leaves are falling, days shortening, and a more frequent chill felt in the air, reminding us both of our finitude and our hope. We will one day pass from the scenes of this life. But that passing is not the end. Because of God s love in Jesus Christ there is hope for a life beyond the boundary of death. 2
November is our traditional month of giving thanks. 1 Thessalonians 5:18 states. "Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus." We, as a congregation, have many reasons to give thanks this year. We are blessed with a new minister, Jeffrey Lang, and his family. We look forward to his leadership and ministry, and anticipate the new energy he will bring to our congregation. We are grateful for the dedication of the members of the Pastor Nominating Committee who spent long hours finding the right pastor for our church. We are grateful for our choir and organist who enrich our service each Sunday with beautiful music and song. We are grateful for the many acts of kindness shown to our parishioners during times of illness or need. We, as a congregation, are grateful for the fellowship we have with one another. We share our blessings with those less fortunate in the community by filling Thanksgiving boxes. We are fortunate to live in this country with the freedoms we enjoy. We are able to worship as we please. We celebrate Thanksgiving with a community-wide religious service. This year the Sisters of the Transfiguration are hosting the service at the Chapel of the Transfiguration at 7:00pm on Wednesday, November 21. I hope that Glendale Presbyterian Church will be represented at the service this year. What are you thankful for? We extend our sympathy to the family of member William K. G., who died October 1. Please keep the G. family in your thoughts and prayers as they transition to life without Bill. Bill s memorial service was held at this church Church on Saturday, October 20. The Deacons offer prayer, companionship, rides, or meals, but don t always know where care is needed. If you know of a need (your own or another s), call the church or any of our Deacons: Betty R (moderator), Susan G, Nancy G, Sarah H, Sonya K, Susy S In our thoughts and prayers Mike B, Todd B (son of Ruth B; step-brother of Pam C), William B, Carol H, Jane K, Greg K, Donna L, Eloise M, Jackie O 3
A single grateful thought toward heaven is the most complete prayer. - Gotthold Lessing October at The Century Inn Eighteen members of the congregation enjoyed a delicious dinner at The Century Inn on Tuesday, October 16. They say, it s not how many come -- it s how many come back. I m sure many will come back! All enjoyed their dinner and one even said, the best ribs ever. The service was great and a grand time was had by all. Watch for another Fellowship event soon. Golf Outing Update Forty golfers enjoyed the day, a bit cool, but fun, Saturday, October 27, for our 22nd annual golf outing at The Mill Course in memory of our friend Tom Allen. At 5:00pm, we were joined by fifteen folks for some delicious refreshments, followed by golf awards and the raffle. We were delighted to introduce Rev. Lang and his family to those who braved the weather to join us. Watch for a full report in the next Messenger. Lunch begins at 12:30pm. Music Live with Lunch is a series of free public concerts on the second Wednesday of each month at Christ Church Glendale (965 Forest Avenue). All concerts begin at 12:05 (after the bells have rung!) and last about minutes. You are invited to bring your own lunch or purchase a prepared lunch for a nominal cost. November 14 - Enjoy the might and magnificence of Christ Church Glendale s Fisk pipe organ, played by Bryan Mock. 4
Vegetables are a must on a diet. I suggest carrot cake, zucchini bread, and pumpkin pie. - Jim Davis Children s Church has gotten off to a slow start; the children have begun learning the New Testament. In November, Children s Church will be held during the worship hour on November 4, and 18. The adults got off to a slow start too, but are now enjoying the study of A Brief Statement of Faith. This is the core of beliefs for the Presbyterian Church, and is a great way to learn what being reformed and a Presbyterian is all about. There are extra books in Charlotte s mailbox in the church office, so feel free to take one and join the class. Saturday, November 10 6:00pm-10:00pm As in the past, the November Parents Night Out includes pictures with Santa. The cost of a picture is a can of food donated to the food pantry. For the low cost of $10.00/child or $30/maximum per family, the children will enjoy a snack, an art project, and play games. Please contact Charlotte by Thursday, November 8, by phone or text ( ), to reserve space and allow for planning. Leave your name, phone number, the number of children and their ages, and if you will participate in photos only or photos and Parent s Night Out. Mark your calendar for Santa s Workshop coming Saturday, December 8. 5
God doesn t call the qualified, He qualifies the called. - Anonymous One page simply isn t enough to contain all that we have to be thankful for! Church Blood Drive The Outreach committee would like to thank our 5 blood donors who came out on Monday evening, October 22 to participate in our semiannual blood donation. This is a join effort along with Christ Church Glendale, who had eleven donors. The Hoxworth Blood Center is usually happy if we can provide close to twenty donors. Those participating from FPCG were Susan Armstrong, Marianna Briner, Matt Briner, Bob Johnson, and Tom Shevlin. I believe we would all agree that we would much rather be donating than receiving, so please seriously consider giving during our next donation opportunity in April Thank you! A huge Glendale Presbyterian Church thank you from Buildings and Grounds. Thank you to Stu and Pat Clipson, Karen Reynolds, and Peter Galbraith for their hard work with cleaning up the manse on the Saturday, October 13 manse clean-up day. Their tireless tidying entailed dusting, vacuuming, mopping, and weeding. The manse looks fantastic and is all ready to go for the Lang family! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you to all those who pitched in and helped to fill the pantry for Pastor Lang and his family. They really appreciated it. What I love about our church and our church family is people pitch in with what they can do and they do not make a big deal about it. Many of us donated food for the Lang family s arrival and what a nice thing to come home to! I want to thank Jane Johnson and Peter Galbraith for all they did to prepare the manse for their arrival! Karen Reynolds, Marybeth Long-Wolff, and Carol Faulkner - thank you for the preparations of the Pastor s study. Session, thank you all for pitching in for the welcoming Coffee Fellowship on Sunday, October 28. Our Pastor Nominating Committee was a wonderful group to work with! I know we did a great job and I am looking forward to spending my Tuesdays in other ways besides PNC, and I know Karen, Mary, and Beverley are too! 7
Be thankful for what you have; you ll end up having more. If you concentrate on what you don t have, you will never, ever have enough. - Oprah Winfrey Thank you, Dave Conyers, for all you do! On Tuesday evening, October 16, eighteen of us from FPCG got together at The Century Inn to honor and say thank you to Dave Conyers for all he does for our church. Take a moment and think about some of the things he does; Food on the Square, Food Offering Sunday, Pancake Breakfast, Golf Outing, Fellowship Dinners, Valley Interfaith 5K for 10K, Valley Interfaith Christmas Food Drive, Men s Choir, Men s Lunch at Skyline and Gold Star, Men s portion of the Rummage Sale, makes the coffee for almost every Coffee Fellowship, washing dishes for Interfaith Hospitality Network, (and this very BIG ONE) your Glendale Directory (info gathering, printing, and sales). So if you get a chance, stop Dave and say thank you for all you do! you will probably get a smile, a chuckle, and he will be on his way to help someone. It was certainly an evening of good friends, good food, and good thoughts, especially about Dave. THANKS DAVE! 6 Our Beautiful Courtyard and Church Beds Many folks have contributed their time this spring and summer to keep our church grounds and the courtyard in good shape. We sent out many thank you recognitions for the great jobs our members provided. As the courtyard is a focal point, it has taken special efforts. Shrubs were trimmed, weeds between the bricks were pulled and sprayed, special weed preventer was applied to all the brick areas, weeds in the beds were removed, plants were provided and cared for periodically. We have thanked all the volunteers in person and in this newsletter often. Those of you that have a special bed/area that you care for throughout the growing season are greatly appreciated! We extend a special thank you to you for making our church grounds look like there are members that truly love this church. In spite of all our efforts, with the monsoons and droughts that we have endured this year, the courtyard was looking neglected. That was before Susy and Richard Spence visited the courtyard and worked their magic in the past weeks. Be sure to take a look and you will be very proud of our place to take a few minutes to meditate or just simply enjoy its beauty as you pass through. We want to be sure that Susy and Rich know that their efforts were noticed by us and greatly appreciated. We want to wish all the folks that take their time to support the work days. I am hoping that if you are not helping this cause that you will be inspired and pick a small corner or spot and make it your project for next year.
