LTD. The period between Yom HaShoah and Yom Hazikaron is a difficult time. Besides its primary purpose as a day of remembrance of Israel s fallen, the latter also serves as a sober reminder that the hatred that gave rise to the former remains, notwithstanding the passage of time. I write this having just attended the interactive Yom Hazikaron exhibition presented by R Dudi Winkler and our Hesder boys - Amir, Gilad, Daniel and Matan. The exhibition focuses on the lives and deaths of two of Israel s fallen soldiers, and it is no exaggeration to state that R Dudi and Chani Winkler, together with the boys, poured their hearts and souls into creating a moving tribute to two Jewish heroes who gave their lives so that we may be free to live as Jews in our Homeland. I encourage you to attend the exhibition this Sunday (see details in the flyer attached to this newsletter) and show your appreciation for the tireless efforts invested by both R Dudi and Chani and the bachurim. The bitterness of the immensely tragic losses our People has suffered over the past seventy-five years is overwhelming. However, just as the bitter waters which were encountered by the Jewish People on the first Rosh Chodesh Iyar following the Exodus from Mitzrayim were miraculously sweetened, so too must we strive to overcome the bitterness of our trials and tribulations and proceed along the sweet path of Torah as loyal Jews. Thus may we merit to witness the complete redemption and to live in the Land promised to us by Hashem and bequeathed to us by those who gave everything to defend it. In this vein we should all celebrate our precious ability to live freely as Torah-observant Jews in our own Homeland for the first time in two millennia. *********** this issue Notices, Shiurim and Events P.1 ED s Message for the Month P.2 Bnei Akiva Yidsem P.3 Excerpts from Kesher P.4 Kosher Products Here, There & Everywhere! The eruv chatzerot (mixed courtyards) operates so that all those residing within its boundaries are considered as living within a common dwelling, thereby enabling such residents to carry permitted items on Shabbat in what would otherwise be viewed as public areas. The process of arranging the eruv chatzerot in Melbourne is repeated annually and was recently performed by our own Rabbi Sprung and Rabbi Beck of the Adass Yisroel Congregation on behalf of the entire community through the customary gifting of matzah by one to the other. גוט שבת ושבת שלום, Ari Morris Executive Director ABN Balaclava Road, Caulfield North, Victoria 3161, Australia Phone: (61)(3) Fax: (61)(3) office@mizrachi.com.au The Land of Israel for the People of Israel according to the Torah of Israel ארץ ישראל לעם ישראל על פי תורת ישראל 2
BNEI AKIVA YIDSEM Bnei Akiva Australia has just finished running a five day national ideology seminar for its 100-plus Madrichim from across Australia. Aimed at transforming the kids of today into the Yids of tomorrow, it was coined YidSem. The ideological discussions ranged from some of the more core principles of Bnei Akiva, such as the education of Torah values, the obligation of making Aliyah and what to do about the extinct socialist values of the movement; to more unfamiliar ideological territory, such as the Australian branch s political nonpartisanship, how to answer tricky philosophical questions from Chanichim and the practical move towards the movement s federalisation. Though based in Melbourne Bnei Akiva s Maon, the programs were run all around Melbourne, from afloat the Yarra on a boat cruise; to by the bay at St Kilda beach; to the mid-air thrill of the trampolines at Bounce. An educational, stimulating and social time was had by all who attended. B'virkat Chaverim Le'Torah Ve'Avodah Joshua Rubin Federal Merakez (President) Bnei Akiva Australia 3
Excerpts from the past month YEAR SIX MOTHER AND DAUGHTER LEARNING EVENING On a recent Sunday in March the Year 6 girls got together with their mothers for a special Mother Daughter Learning Evening with Rav Noam Sendor. It was the first time this event was held, and the result was a wonderful and exciting evening of deep and insightful Chavruta learning. Rav Noam explained why the four Parshiyot we read from Chodesh Adar to Chodesh Nissan are read at this time. The series starts with Parashat Shekalim and finishes with Parashat Hachodesh, which is Chodesh Nissan (the beginning of the Jewish year according to the Torah). We explored the topic of Freedom and how the Four Parshiyot teach us about different aspects of freedom. The girls then prepared presentations on their respective parshiyot together with their mothers. Their enthusiastic presentations were a great way to share knowledge between the groups, and for all girls to learn from one another in an active and engaging way. Pnina Landau Head of Jewish Studies Primary School BEACHSIDE DISTRICT YEAR 8 VOLLEYBALL TOURNAMENT When the year 8 boys got onto the bus they were expecting a fun day. However, as soon as we got to the venue (Cheltenham College), we all became very serious and we were going for gold. When we played our first game we started to figure out what everyone was capable of. Arieh, Jordan, and Avraham Ori were our servers. The team spirit was high with everyone encouraging each other. There were a few attempts to kick the ball over the net, but nothing could beat Ezra Joel s reaction of a kick which went over the net and won the point. That was the play of the day. The Final was tough. The other team was constantly trying to break us, by taking timeouts, but we kept our heads together with wise words from our Captain, Jordan Simai who led us to victory. Now we are up to conquer the next team! Yudi Vorchheimer, Year 8 PRIMARY JEWISH STUDIES In the lead-up to Pesach, Foundation, Year 1 and Year 2 had very special Model Sdarim with their teachers, where they ran through the Seder night activities in preparation for the real event. It was a pleasure to hear them sing the songs and give over the Divrei Torah that they learnt in class, before continuing with the 'Ma Nishtana' and the rest of the Seder. 4
Kosher Products Here, There and Everywhere! How Are We Doing? The raison d etre of Kosher Australia is to ensure that appropriately Kosher products are readily available for the Kosher consumer. (No, we are not food distributors nor do we sell Kosher food). So how are we measuring up against our mission statement in 2013? My Jelly confectionery is now Kosher certified. My Jelly make fruit flavoured pareve jelly confectionery. Ozganics produce a large variety of cooking sauces and marinades, many of which are now Kosher certified pareve. Hindmarsh Dairy are a boutique dairy located on the outskirts of Adelaide specialising in goat dairy products. They are working on a Cholov Yisroel programme for the near future. Betta Australia have received certification for a number of their liquorices and ice cream cones. A number of IGA Purely Organic Sauces are now Kosher certified. We have extended the range of Macro products to include tomato sauce and sweet chilli sauce. Ducks Nuts have become Kosher. As of the start of 2013, Heinz tomato and BBQ sauces are now Kosher certified pareve even when produced in New Zealand (the Kosher stock will filter into supermarkets over the coming months). SPC Plum Sauce and SPC Apple Sauce are now Kosher certified. SPC Baked Beans and SPC Mexican Chilli Beans produced after 1 January 2013 are Kosher certified pareve we are working with SPC to extend the Kosher range. Sidewalk Café has opened on Dandenong Road in Carnegie. The cuisine is dairy (Cholov Yisroel) and caters for Monash Caulfield and local businesses (as well as the casual passerby!). Chobani kosher yoghurt range has been extended and now carries the Kosher Australia dairy symbol (Cholov Stam). Aside from these products that we Kosher certify, we have been able to confirm with other Kosher Authorities overseas regarding the acceptability of Mars ice creams and additional Pringles products (made in the USA). In the pipelines are a major cereal company, a large bakery, major ingredient producers and a new range of healthy yoghurts. During the weeks preceding Pesach we released the 2013 Kosher Australia Food Guide and to date we have distributed over 2000 copies throughout Jewish communities Australia-wide. ONE OF THE MAIN concerns that face families in our community is the cost of Kosher food. This is magnified during Pesach when many regular staples are not suitable for Pesach and only imported products at inflated prices can be purchased. Over the past few years, our Kosher auditors have, as part of their investigation of a factory, been asked to note which products would be suitable for Pesach use. As a consequence we have been able to recommend the use of certain mainstream products for Pesach such as teas, oils, coffee, sugar, frozen vegetables, honey, orange juice, salmon, milk and carbonated drinks. A number of manufacturers have also taken the plunge to organise special Kosher for Pesach production runs of products such as nuts, dried fruits, and prepared meals. In expanding the range of locally made mainstream Kosher products without short-cutting the standard of Kashrus we will inevitably cut the cost of Kosher without compromising on Kashrus. Yankel Wajsbort General Manager Kosher Australia Pty Ltd Most of the IXL jam range are now Kosher. The Soland nut range has been Kosher certified. 5
Rabbi Kalonymus Kalman Szapira was born in 1889 in Grodzisk Mazowiecki, Poland. His father was the Imrei Elimelech of Grodzhisk. In 1905 he married the daughter of his (older) nephew, Rebbe Yerachmiel Moshe of Kozhnitz. They had two children, Elimelech Ben Zion and Rechil Yehudis, both of whom perished in the Shoah. In 1909, Rabbi Szapira was appointed rabbi of Piaseczno, near Warsaw, and subsequently attracted many chassidim. He was deeply focused on the education of children and young men, establishing Yeshivas Da'as Moshe in In his work as a teacher, Rabbi Szapira attempted to reverse the trend toward secularization, which swept the Jewish community in Poland between the wars. Sages Across the Ages י רבי קלונימוס קלמיש שפירא ד ז ז ל י ד ל Rabbi Kalonymus Kalman Szapira The vibrant cultural life of the city, as well as the attractions of political movements, eroded the number of students wishing to pursue a yeshivah education. Rabbi Szapira's only son, his daughter-inlaw and his sister-in-law were killed during the German aerial bombing of Warsaw in September His daughter was deported later. After the invasion of Poland, Rabbi Szapira was interned with a few of his chassidim in the Warsaw Ghetto, where he ran a secret synagogue. He invested enormous efforts in maintaining Jewish life in the ghetto, including arranging for mikveh immersions and kosher marriages. Rabbi Szapira was able to survive in the ghetto until its liquidation - avoiding the mass deportations to Treblinka in the summer of because of the support of the Judenrat. Rabbi Szapira is well known partly because of a book he wrote while in the ghetto. The book, which is a compilation of weekly sermons to his students, contends with complex questions of faith in the face of the mounting suffering of the Jews in the ghetto. When it became apparent to Rabbi Szapira that the end of the ghetto and all its inhabitants was near, he buried the book in a canister. This canister was found by a construction worker after the end of the war. The book was published in Israel in 1960 under the title Esh Kodesh. After the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising was crushed in 1943, Rabbi Szapira was taken to the Trawniki work camp near Lublin, where he was murdered on 3 November ************* בן אלימלך מגורדזינסק וחתן רבי יחיאל משה מקוזניץ.
