2 President s Message On behalf of the Board of Directors, I want to thank everyone who worked so hard and volunteered their time to help make this year s High Holiday services so special. Special thanks to Rabbi Tuchman, Andrea Schwalberg, and the Ritual Committee for making the services both spiritual and inspirational. The person you saw walking around and hoping everyone showed up for their Aliyot was Steve Mayer. Steve and his committee had the thankless job of assigning Aliyot, handling complaints, and then making sure everyone showed up and everything ran smoothly. Thanks to Steve and members of his committee for a job well done! Lisa Schonberger, our office manager, and Al Kianese, our custodian, helped to organize and prepare for the holidays. Besides managing the Temple office, Lisa prepares the Temple Talk each month. We have one of the best Temple bulletins I ve ever seen! Thanks Lisa, you do a great job! Al manages and organizes everything in the Temple 365 days per year. Whenever anything needs to be done, he is always available. We are lucky Lisa and Al are part of our Temple family. A special thanks to Mark Simon for preparing and organizing the Martyrology service. Mark put together the service, assigned parts, and coordinated the music with Andrea. The flooding in the sanctuary occurred 2 hours before Rosh Hashana services were to begin. We thank everyone for their understanding during Rosh Hashana services. We were able to return to the sanctuary for Yom Kippur. A special thanks to Len Young for diagnosing our flooding problem and for spearheading the repairs. Finally, to the many other people who work so hard and volunteer their time to the Temple, we say thank you for a job well done! You have all helped to make Temple B nai Israel a WARM, INSPIRATIONAL, AND VERY SPECIAL PLACE! May the year 5779 be a year of health, peace, and security for all of us, for our families, for Israel, and for the Jewish people the world over. L Shanah Tovah Tikatavu May you be inscribed in the Book of Life for a good year. Dick Leffel 3
3 Rabbi s Message Babble We are coming up on Shabbat Noaḥ, October This third year of our triennial cycle of reading Torah brings us, in Genesis 11, the famous story of the Tower of Babel. You will recall that, following the Great Flood, all the humans on earth had a single language, and they decided to build a tower whose top would reach the sky. The goal was to achieve fame and avoid having humanity scattered over the entire earth. In a literal reading, the first goal doesn t make sense; since everyone was in the same place, who would acknowledge their fame? I think this goal should be united with the idea of reaching heaven: the idea was to have a name as great as God s. As for the second goal, a united humanity in perfect communication might see itself as having Godlike power. In the end, of course, humanity is scattered over the face of the earth, speaking a multitude of languages. The illegitimate goal of becoming like God is frustrated in a welter of misunderstanding. We might read this as a pourquoi tale, explaining the origin of different cultures, ethnicities and languages. We might also read it as explaining the origin of rivalry, war and hatred. I think of this story as an admonition for us human beings to know our place. Our aspirations should be human, not godlike. Indeed, when we work together, nothing human is out of our reach and we can accomplish great things. But that involves dedication and mutual understanding about ideals and materials. Learning to speak meaningfully with one another is an art that we haven t yet mastered even when we speak the same language! We can also learn from Babel that nothing material can reach the sky, whatever that is. Science continues to teach us that the sky recedes the farther we go to reach it. (The sky is really the limit, but we haven t reached it. What does that tell you?) In our time, even in our own country and our own families, people persist in talking past each other. Listening to one another becomes ever harder as we try to keep up with the flood of words and images that capture our attention and distract us from necessary work. Learning to listen better, and to speak with, instead of speaking to or even at other people are skills whose necessity is conveyed by our story of the Tower of Babel. An early lesson and a simple lesson that is eternally relevant. Rabbi Paul Tuchman 4
