5 SUNDAY JEWISH STUDIES ADULT ED KICKOFF SESSION SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER REFORM INNOVATIONS IN 150 YEARS OF HIGH HOLY DAYS with FIRST PERIOD THE SURPRISING AND INSPIRING STORY OF TIKKUN OLAM JUST IN TIME FOR THE NEW YEAR! with Rabbi Conover SECOND PERIOD AMERICAN REFORM JUDAISM: OUR HISTORY AND OUR FUTURE Rabbi Edwin Goldberg FIRST PERIOD SUNDAY MORNING FALL As we celebrate our 150th it is appropriate and timely to review the practices and perspectives of American Reform Judaism. As American Judaism reaches a crossroad, the authentic choices of Reform Judaism could not be timelier. Come see how our American Jewish forebears addressed such issues as Sabbath and holiday observance, not to mention Zionism and Jewish peoplehood. THE HEBREW PROPHETS: HOW THEIR PASSION STILL SPEAKS TO US Rabbi Edwin Goldberg FIRST PERIOD SUNDAY MORNING WINTER A The essence of our Jewish ethical monotheism comes from the classic prophets of the Bible, such as Amos, Isaiah and Micah. We will meet these prophets through their words and apply their teachings to the modern ethical issues of today. The great Micah said: What does God require of us? Come see for yourself! WHAT S LOVE GOT TO DO WITH IT? LOVE AND JUSTICE IN JUDAISM Rabbi Shoshanah Conover FIRST PERIOD SUNDAY MORNING WINTER B Love has been a potent source for justice from Biblical times until today. We will locate the motivation and consequences of a love infused justice through wonderfully rich and engaging texts as we ask ourselves: What s love got to do with it? And find the surprising answer: Everything. IN LOVE WITH A COMPLEX ISRAEL: ZIONISM IN OUR TIME Rabbi Shoshanah Conover FIRST PERIOD SUNDAY MORNING SPRING Embrace a unique learning experience through the Shalom Hartman Institute s iengage Project. Through text study, video, and discussion we will address core questions pertaining to the necessity and significance of the State of Israel. We will generate a conversation that will celebrate Israel for what it is and what it will become as we commit to taking part in building such an Israel. THE EVOLUTION OF SPIRITUALITY IN THE REFORM MOVEMENT Cantor Emerita Aviva Katzman FIRST PERIOD SUNDAY MORNING WINTER C Reform Jewry has proceeded from our belief that the Messianic ideal was on its way and our optimistic cultivation of decorous, dignified services reminiscent of our gentile neighbors. Prayers and customs once discarded as outdated and tribal have been reclaimed. Mysticism, meditation, and soulful music of many styles are embraced. Much has remained, but a new religious vocabulary has emerged. How did this unfold and what is still at our core? THE ORIGINAL TEXT OF THE MISHNA Roberta Schwartz FIRST PERIOD SUNDAY MORNING FALL We will focus on the original text of the Mishna, which was completed in the early 3rd century C.E. It represents thinking regarding Jewish tradition and observance, as well as additions to and differences with material found in the Torah. In sum, one can observe both the new and old evolving. Both the original Hebrew and English translation will guide us.

She currently teaches yoga to seniors at several locations in Chicago. Judy s classes are based in mindfulness: it s not about how well you do the poses but about developing a sense of and appreciation for the body, mind and breath in the present moment. For those who did not have the chance to celebrate becoming Bar/Bat Mitzvah at 13, we offer the opportunity to acquire the skills necessary to read from the Torah and to write a d var Torah and reflect on the Torah portion as an adult. Our program is tailored to the needs of the individual, but consists of the following components: An Introduction to Judaism or other adult education course Hebrew training One-on-one study with a clergy member Periodic seminars with other adult Bar/Bat Mitzvah Technically a Jew becomes Bar/Bat Mitzvah simply by turning 13 (traditionally, 12 for girls). Nevertheless, the thrill of being called to the Torah for the first time as a Bar/Bat mitzvah is a right that anyone can earn any time with guided preparation and a commitment to study. The staff of Temple Sholom would love to help make that happen for you. We plan to begin a new cohort when there is sufficient interest. Please contact education@sholomchicago.org to add your name to the interest list.
