1 D var Senior Rabbi Edwin Goldberg A few years ago Melanie and I rented bicycles in Amsterdam. During our ride I noticed a building in the distance. I had never seen it before but immediately a chill went down my spine. I knew it was the Portuguese Synagogue. The chill was because it was there that, hundreds of years before, Baruch Spinoza was excommunicated from his Jewish community. I was more than haunted by the image of the great thinker being cut off from his community. I was angry as I felt indebted to Spinoza for the view of God that eventually would be called non-dual theology. It is said that Albert Einstein was once pressed by a rabbi to announce whether or not he believed in God. He famously replied that he believed in the God of Spinoza. I don t think that is a bad endorsement for taking Spinoza s theology seriously. Born in Amsterdam in 1632, Baruch Spinoza excelled in his Jewish studies but his passion for philosophical speculation led him into fields considered heretical by the relatively liberal Jewish community. At the heart of his argument Spinoza rejected the notion that mind and matter are differentiated from each other. God and the universe are in fact one. Spinoza has been labeled a pantheist for good reason. Nevertheless, I prefer the label non-dual theology. Non-dual theology has been compared to polytheism, paganism, and atheism. It is none of those. It is a humble admission that we cannot understand the mystery of the universe but we can feel we are inextricably part of that mystery. Mystics over the centuries understand this recognition and have given it different names, as have Transcendentalists, religion professors and sociologists. Spinoza s influence over modern Jewish thought is so comprehensive that often his foundational work is taken for granted. His greatest gift to Jewish theology may be providing language to describe this kind of divine understanding. Of course, Spinoza s actual writing is difficult to understand, and the medieval doctrine of nondualism, found in the Kabbalah and reflected in Hasidism, does not find many modern readers. Nevertheless, mainstream spiritual practice in Israel reflects a strong non-dual aspect, such as the bumper sticker that says, Ein Od Milvado (there is nothing but God). Jay Michelson, in his book, Everything is God: A sacred community that embraces, inspires and matters NOVEMBER 2017 The Radical Path of Nondual Judaism, explains what this mystical nondual view means in our daily ego-centered lives, for our communities, and for the future of religion in an increasingly technological and multicultural age. In short, religion is not about belief in God, myth, or fundamentalist ideas of scripture but love, and the obligations which spring from it. Meditation is not about cultivating special states of mind, but learning to accept that everything in life even suffering, pain, and injustice as God. I highly recommend both this approach and Michelson s book, especially for the skeptics among us. With sholom, Rabbi Edwin Goldberg rabbigoldberg@sholomchicago.org What s the Rabbi Reading? 8 Inclusion Matters Spotlight on Religious School Learning Specialists: Orli Ginsberg & Jori Margolis. Our goal at Temple Sholom is to create a successful, inclusive environment in which each child develops a love for Judaism and one another. In order to best achieve this goal, we have two Learning Specialists to help teachers integrate successful strategies used in regular school and home. This creates consistency and ensures that we are accommodating to each child s needs. We ask parents to share any learning needs or issues with us as well as if students have an IEP or receive resource services. Our Learning Specialists, Orli and Jori, reach out to parents and observe students in classrooms in order to help teachers best support students learning. Should any student require or benefit from one-on-one time with specialists, we do our best to ensure that we are accommodating each child s individual needs. Want to learn more? Contact jay@sholomchicago.org Jori Margolis Orli Ginsberg MARK YOUR CALENDARS: WEDNESDAY NOV. 8 6:00 PM THREE BOOKS, ONE SHOLOM Book Discussion with Rabbi Conover Eboo Patel, President of the Interfaith Youth Core will inspire our congregation when he speaks from our bimah at Friday night services on Dec. 1. To get ready for his visit, feel free to join Rabbi Conover for a discussion of his book, Acts of Faith. Rabbi Conover had a chance to speak with a Eboo recently. Here s a bit of their chat: Rabbi Conover: Who is a hero of yours in the field of interfaith work? Eboo Patel: Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel. I would say this answer to anyone, but I think it s especially relevant to a synagogue who is celebrating its sesquicentennial in Chicago. And there s a couple reasons for this. One is, if there s anyone who had reason to focus on his own religious community, especially after the Shoah, it s Heschel. I mean, he watched the most evil stuff happen to his family. Instead, Heschel comes to the United States and becomes involved in the civil rights movement. And Chicago is where he first met Martin Luther King, Jr. The other thing I love about Heschel is that he articulated Jewish reasons for being involved in interfaith work, not just civic reasons. RC: If there was one book, not of your own books, that you would urge someone to read if they really want to witness interfaith work in action, what would it be? EP: Martin Luther King Jr. s Testament of Hope which is his collected essays and speeches. I love that, first of all because he s probably the greatest American of the 20th Century and these essays are so full of hope. But I also love it because there s so many threads of interfaith learning and leadership there. People do not often know that Martin Luther King, Jr. was such an interfaith leader. He looked at his own tradition for guidance and he admired other faith traditions. He had very close friendships and partnerships across religious difference. That all comes through in that book. RC: What s the must read out of your books? EP: Well, never ask an author of multiple books what the must read is because it s hard to choose a favorite of your children or your books. But I would say for a community that is looking to tell its own story in interfaith work, I would suggest my first book, Acts of Faith. It is the most relevant because it s basically a story of how I, as a young person, became involved in interfaith work. And so in reading that, I hope the reader can understand his or her own story and a community that s reading it can understand their own story in this work. RC: What was a piece that someone said to you or that you read that lit a fire in you about this work? EP: My dad went to Notre Dame University and that s why we re in this country, because this Catholic university started by these French priests from the Holy Cross order admitted a wayward Muslim from India to their MBA program in the mid-1970s. And my dad would often say: between different traditions, you can look for the differences or you can look for the resonances between those different traditions. That helped shape me around this work. What does it mean to pay attention to the resonances? That s different than similarities or commonalities. It s more like, when one reads Rabbi Hillel, who does one think of in one s own tradition? Where does it resonate with you in your own heart? RC: Anything else you want to add? EP: Having learned something about the history of Temple Sholom, about its involvement in the work of pluralism and justice, about its role in Chicago, about the various people who have come and ignited the congregation and been ignited by it, I m very honored by this invitation and I m looking forward to joining the community. FRIDAY DEC. 1 6:15 PM Interfaith Shabbat with Eboo Patel Come hear one of the leading voices in America speak on a crucial issue of our time: the rise of hatred, anti-semitism, xenophobia and the impact on our youth. Patel details his life and career extensively in his 2007 autobiography, Acts of Faith. In the book, Patel notes that he became interested in religious diversity in college, where he noticed that conversations on multiculturalism and multiple identities did not involve religious identity. After graduating from college, he taught at an alternative education program for high school dropouts in Chicago and, inspired partly by Dorothy Day s Catholic Worker movement, founded a cooperative living community for activists and artists in Chicago s Uptown neighborhood. Eboo founded Interfaith Youth Core on the idea that religion should be a bridge of cooperation rather than a barrier of division. He is inspired to build this bridge by his identity as an American Muslim navigating a highly religiously diverse social landscape. For over fifteen years he has worked with governments, social sector organizations, and college and university campuses to help make interfaith cooperation a social norm. sholomchicago.org celebrate150@sholomchicago.org 150 th Temple Trivia Did you know...?
