Isaiah 30B-33 S Judah is n the brink f Gd plwing their field They entered int a cvenant with Egypt instead f relying n Gd S Gd prnunces their cming judgment, when Assyria will siege Jerusalem But every lwing cmes t an end and is fllwed by swing and harvesting And Isaiah tempers his message f judgment with a mment f redemptin... Is. 30:18 Therefre the LORD lngs t be gracius t yu, And therefre He waits n high t have cmpassin n yu. Fr the LORD is a Gd f justice; Hw blessed are all thse wh lng fr Him. Is. 30:19 O peple in Zin, inhabitant in Jerusalem, yu will weep n lnger. He will surely be gracius t yu at the sund f yur cry; when He hears it, He will answer yu. Is. 30:20 Althugh the Lrd has given yu bread f privatin and water f ppressin, He, yur Teacher will n lnger hide Himself, but yur eyes will behld yur Teacher. Is. 30:21 Yur ears will hear a wrd behind yu, This is the way, walk in it, whenever yu turn t the right r t the left. Is. 30:22 And yu will defile yur graven images verlaid with silver, and yur mlten images plated with gld. Yu will scatter them as an impure thing, and say t them, Be gne! Is. 30:23 Then He will give yu rain fr the seed which yu will sw in the grund, and bread frm the yield f the grund, and it will be rich and plenteus; n that day yur livestck will graze in a rmy pasture. Is. 30:24 Als the xen and the dnkeys which wrk the grund will eat salted fdder, which has been winnwed with shvel and frk. Is. 30:25 On every lfty muntain and n every high hill there will be streams running with water n the day f the great slaughter, when the twers fall. Is. 30:26 The light f the mn will be as the light f the sun, and the light f the sun will be seven times brighter, like the light f seven days, n the day the LORD binds up the fracture f His peple and heals the bruise He has inflicted. By nw, we shuld be very familiar with this recurring theme f Isaiah The theme f the cming Kingdm and Israel s restratin in that kingdm 2010 Verse By Verse Ministry f San Antni ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Isaiah 30B-33! 2 Let s run thrugh the familiar details N mre weeping The Lrd answering the cry f Israel N lnger hiding Himself, yur eyes will see Him (v.20) Yu will walk in His ways perfectly (sinlessly) N mre idls (v.22) Harvest f plenty (seed mtif again) N darkness and the light f the wrld far brighter Israel healed All signs f the Lrd s return and Israel s healing and restratin But nt yet This perid waits fr Gd s judgment first (v.18) In cnjunctin with this future restratin, we als knw that Gd s judgment falls n the natins that have assembled t destry Israel in that time And Isaiah has smething t say fr their future as well Is. 30:27 Behld, the name f the LORD cmes frm a remte place; Burning is His anger and dense is His smke; His lips are filled with indignatin And His tngue is like a cnsuming fire; Is. 30:28 His breath is like an verflwing trrent, Which reaches t the neck, T shake the natins back and frth in a sieve, And t put in the jaws f the peples the bridle which leads t ruin. Is. 30:29 Yu will have sngs as in the night when yu keep the festival, And gladness f heart as when ne marches t the sund f the flute, T g t the muntain f the LORD, t the Rck f Israel. Fr the mst part, this passage is easy t understand s lng as we leave it in the immediate cntext f Isaiah s earlier statements This is the judgment that ccurs when Christ returns t Earth But there are a cuple f ntewrthy details t cnsider 2010 Verse By Verse Ministry f San Antni ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Isaiah 30B-33! 3 Isaiah says they will have sngs they sing As in the night f the festival That phrase is generally understd t reference Passver Which is a festival that memrializes a single night s event Hymns are cmmnly sng n that night, as yu can see in Matthew 26:30 Where Jesus and the disciples sing a hymn at the end f the Passver meal Then Isaiah nce again weaves references f the future with references f the present day judgment In vs the fcus was the judgment against the natins f the Tribulatin Nw in vs Isaiah mves his fcus back t Assyria Is. 30:30 And the LORD will cause His vice f authrity t be heard, And the descending f His arm t be seen in fierce anger, And in the flame f a cnsuming fire In cludburst, dwnpur and hailstnes. Is. 30:31 Fr at the vice f the LORD Assyria will be terrified, When He strikes with the rd. Is. 30:32 And every blw f the rd f punishment, Which the LORD will lay n him, Will be with the music f tamburines and lyres; And in battles, brandishing weapns, He will fight them. Is. 30:33 Fr Tpheth has lng been ready, Indeed, it has been prepared fr the king. He has made it deep and large, A pyre f fire with plenty f wd; The breath f the LORD, like a trrent f brimstne, sets it afire. Hw d we knw that Isaiah wasn t talking abut Assyria the whle time? Lk at v.28 where he references natins and peples And again in v.29, the result f the Lrd s deliverance is the natin ging t the muntain f the Lrd and t the Rck f Israel This never happened after the Lrd delivered Israel frm Assyria 2010 Verse By Verse Ministry f San Antni ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Isaiah 30B-33! 4 There was n natinal cming t faith in the Messiah But after Christ s Secnd Cming, this is t be the result as we have already studied S nw we knw that this references the future event But in vs we see specific references t Assyria cming t defeat in battle In v.33, Tpeth (which means a burning place) is the same name fr the Valley f Hinnm n the suth side f Jerusalem This valley is the place evil kings f Judah ffered human sacrifices t pagan gds It was als a place where garbage was burned cntinually The cmbinatin f burning garbage and human remains led Jews t assciate the valley with hell Ge-hinnn is the Hebrew name which we have cme t prnunce hell This place has lng been prepared fr the king f Assyria The wrd fr lng is actually yesterday in Hebrew Literally, it says this place was prepared yesterday fr the king Meaning it has been his destiny frm the beginning Rabbinical traditinal has taken this verse t mean that Hell was created n the secnd day f creatin Since the secnd day f creatin was the first day t have a yesterday, then it was the secnd day f creatin when Hell was created They g n t cnclude that this is why that Day 2 is the nly day that has n recrd f Gd saying anything is gd in Genesis 1 In a final warning t Israel against seeking prtectin frm Egypt, Isaiah writes chapter 31: 2010 Verse By Verse Ministry f San Antni ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Isaiah 30B-33! 5 Is. 31:1 We t thse wh g dwn t Egypt fr help And rely n hrses, And trust in charits because they are many And in hrsemen because they are very strng, But they d nt lk t the Hly One f Israel, nr seek the LORD! Is. 31:2 Yet He als is wise and will bring disaster And des nt retract His wrds, But will arise against the huse f evilders And against the help f the wrkers f iniquity. Is. 31:3 Nw the Egyptians are men and nt Gd, And their hrses are flesh and nt spirit; S the LORD will stretch ut His hand, And he wh helps will stumble And he wh is helped will fall, And all f them will cme t an end tgether. Is. 31:4 Fr thus says the LORD t me, As the lin r the yung lin grwls ver his prey, Against which a band f shepherds is called ut, And he will nt be terrified at their vice nr disturbed at their nise, S will the LORD f hsts cme dwn t wage war n Munt Zin and n its hill. Is. 31:5 Like flying birds s the LORD f hsts will prtect Jerusalem. He will prtect and deliver it; He will pass ver and rescue it. Is. 31:6 Return t Him frm whm yu have deeply defected, O sns f Israel. Is. 31:7 Fr in that day every man will cast away his silver idls and his gld idls, which yur sinful hands have made fr yu as a sin. Is. 31:8 And the Assyrian will fall by a swrd nt f man, And a swrd nt f man will devur him. S he will nt escape the swrd, And his yung men will becme frced labrers. Is. 31:9 His rck will pass away because f panic, And his princes will be terrified at the standard, Declares the LORD, whse fire is in Zin and whse furnace is in Jerusalem. The bk f wes cntinues... They relied n hrses and charits and think themselves strng But they dn t lk t the truly strng and Hly One But in v.2 Gd assures Israel that He is wise enugh t bring disaster bth against their adversaries (after all, Gd brught them in them in the first place) And against thse in Israel wh turn their back n Him 2010 Verse By Verse Ministry f San Antni ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Isaiah 30B-33! 6 Isaiah mcks the Egyptians as men nt gds and therefre insufficient t slve a Gd-created prblem The Assyrians were Gd s appinted instruments f destructin Their kings went beynd his instructins and pursued int Judah against Gd s instructins Yet Gd was able t turn that disbedience t suit His wn purpses in using Assyria t discipline Judah And Gd prmises t prevent the Egyptians frm ffering any help Because Gd is determined t fight the battle alne, t His wn glry In the end He prtects Jerusalem because He has need fr it t remain until His Sn is brn and dies there S in v.6 he calls upn Judah t return t Him s they may be included in the rescue Nw Isaiah draws a cntrast between the present day unfaithful leadership within Judah t a future time when it will be ruled by perfectin... Anther familiar theme...but with sme new details Is. 32:1 Behld, a king will reign righteusly And princes will rule justly. Is. 32:2 Each will be like a refuge frm the wind And a shelter frm the strm, Like streams f water in a dry cuntry, Like the shade f a huge rck in a parched land. We knw Isaiah is back t describing the Lrd s return t rule n Earth But here we see a curius new detail A king is mentin, Christ And a prince And we knw these are then same persn because in v.2 we see each referenced, indicating that there is mre than ne persn in view 2010 Verse By Verse Ministry f San Antni ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Isaiah 30B-33! 7 And there is in fact bth a King and a Prince present in the Messianic Kingdm As we said already, Christ is the King But wh is the prince? Lk at Ezekiel 34 describing the times f the Messianic Kingdm Ezek. 34:21 Because yu push with side and with shulder, and thrust at all the weak with yur hrns until yu have scattered them abrad, Ezek. 34:22 therefre, I will deliver My flck, and they will n lnger be a prey; and I will judge between ne sheep and anther. Ezek. 34:23 Then I will set ver them ne shepherd, My servant David, and he will feed them; he will feed them himself and be their shepherd. Ezek. 34:24 And I, the LORD, will be their Gd, and My servant David will be prince amng them; I the LORD have spken. Ezek. 34:25 I will make a cvenant f peace with them and eliminate harmful beasts frm the land s that they may live securely in the wilderness and sleep in the wds. Ezek. 34:26 I will make them and the places arund My hill a blessing. And I will cause shwers t cme dwn in their seasn; they will be shwers f blessing. The Lrd is King amng the shepherds but David is prince We shuld expect this since David will undubtedly be resurrected t jin the kingdm And in that new life he will have a rle just as we all will And it will be as Christ s right hand man in His gvernment Anther interesting detail is that this time will include bth the nble and the fls First, v.5 says that perfect transparency r distinctin will be maintained thrughut the kingdm time And yet the fls still exist and d what fls d While the nble are perfect in their nbility The cntrast here is cnsistent with what we ve seen elsewhere in Isaiah The kingdm is ppulated by the incrruptible resurrected believers 2010 Verse By Verse Ministry f San Antni ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Isaiah 30B-33! 8 But these must rule ver the imperfect that still have sin This is the very reasn fr gvernment Withut sin, the kingdm wuld have n gvernment Isaiah cncludes chapter 32 with a wry call t the wmen f Israel In light f Judah s cming perid f judgment - A perid that wn t end fully until the Messiah s Secnd Cming Isaiah says they shuld begin their murning nw Is. 32:3 Then the eyes f thse wh see will nt be blinded, And the ears f thse wh hear will listen. Is. 32:4 The mind f the hasty will discern the truth, And the tngue f the stammerers will hasten t speak clearly. Is. 32:5 N lnger will the fl be called nble, Or the rgue be spken f as generus. Is. 32:6 Fr a fl speaks nnsense, And his heart inclines tward wickedness: T practice ungdliness and t speak errr against the LORD, T keep the hungry persn unsatisfied And t withhld drink frm the thirsty. Is. 32:7 As fr a rgue, his weapns are evil; He devises wicked schemes T destry the afflicted with slander, Even thugh the needy ne speaks what is right. Is. 32:8 But the nble man devises nble plans; And by nble plans he stands. Is. 32:9 Rise up, yu wmen wh are at ease, And hear my vice; Give ear t my wrd, Yu cmplacent daughters. Is. 32:10 Within a year and a few days Yu will be trubled, O cmplacent daughters; Fr the vintage is ended, And the fruit gathering will nt cme. Is. 32:11 Tremble, yu wmen wh are at ease; Be trubled, yu cmplacent daughters; Strip, undress and put sackclth n yur waist, Is. 32:12 Beat yur breasts fr the pleasant fields, fr the fruitful vine, Is. 32:13 Fr the land f my peple in which thrns and briars shall cme up; Yea, fr all the jyful huses and fr the jubilant city Verse By Verse Ministry f San Antni ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Isaiah 30B-33! 9 Is. 32:14 Because the palace has been abandned, the ppulated city frsaken. Hill and watch-twer have becme caves frever, A delight fr wild dnkeys, a pasture fr flcks; Is. 32:15 Until the Spirit is pured ut upn us frm n high, And the wilderness becmes a fertile field, And the fertile field is cnsidered as a frest. Is. 32:16 Then justice will dwell in the wilderness And righteusness will abide in the fertile field. Is. 32:17 And the wrk f righteusness will be peace, And the service f righteusness, quietness and cnfidence frever. Is. 32:18 Then my peple will live in a peaceful habitatin, And in secure dwellings and in undisturbed resting places; Is. 32:19 And it will hail when the frest cmes dwn, And the city will be utterly laid lw. Is. 32:20 Hw blessed will yu be, yu wh sw beside all waters, Wh let ut freely the x and the dnkey. If nly yu knew what was cming, yu wuldn t be living like life was nrmal Yu wuld be murning nw The palace will be abandned and the crps ruined and the land devastated But in v.15 Isaiah reminds them that nce Gd is ready t pur ut His Spirit n them, they will experience justice And peace and cnfidence frever This reference t the Hly Spirit reaffirms ur reading in Zech 12 where we see the Lrd bringing the natin f Israel t a mment f natinal repentance And then n t 33, and a new phase in the bk f Wes Beginning with a we prnunced n a mysterius character Is. 33:1 We t yu, O destryer, While yu were nt destryed; And he wh is treacherus, while thers did nt deal treacherusly with him. As sn as yu finish destrying, yu will be destryed; As sn as yu cease t deal treacherusly, thers will deal treacherusly with yu. Wh d yu think Isaiah is talking abut here? 2010 Verse By Verse Ministry f San Antni ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Isaiah 30B-33! 10 The destryer is a reference that pints us t Satan But taking it ne step further, remember that Assyria s siege f Jerusalem is a picture f the Antichrist s siege f Jerusalem in the End Times Then it s reasnable t assume we re lking at the antichrist here mre specifically Here Isaiah prmises that he will cme t his fitting end at the Lrd s cming Then in v.2 Isaiah mves frward t revisit his descriptins f that mment when the Lrd frees Israel frm the antichrist s armies Is. 33:2 O LORD, be gracius t us; we have waited fr Yu. Be their strength every mrning, Our salvatin als in the time f distress. Is. 33:3 At the sund f the tumult peples flee; At the lifting up f Yurself natins disperse. Is. 33:4 Yur spil is gathered as the caterpillar gathers; As lcusts rushing abut men rush abut n it. Is. 33:5 The LORD is exalted, fr He dwells n high; He has filled Zin with justice and righteusness. Is. 33:6 And He will be the stability f yur times, A wealth f salvatin, wisdm and knwledge; The fear f the LORD is his treasure. Is. 33:7 Behld, their brave men cry in the streets, The ambassadrs f peace weep bitterly. Is. 33:8 The highways are deslate, the traveler has ceased, He has brken the cvenant, he has despised the cities, He has n regard fr man. Is. 33:9 The land murns and pines away, Lebann is shamed and withers; Sharn is like a desert plain, And Bashan and Carmel lse their fliage. Is. 33:10 Nw I will arise, says the LORD, Nw I will be exalted, nw I will be lifted up. Is. 33:11 Yu have cnceived chaff, yu will give birth t stubble; My breath will cnsume yu like a fire. Is. 33:12 The peples will be burned t lime, Like cut thrns which are burned in the fire. The natin f Israel pens with a prayer in v.2 And they ask fr the Lrd t save them in their time f distress 2010 Verse By Verse Ministry f San Antni ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Isaiah 30B-33! 11 This is a shrt summary f what we ve already seen described in Zech 12 And in respnse t that prayer, the Lrd answers in the fllwing verses At the sund f a tumult r rar, the enemy scatters As Gd Himself is lifted up They gathered fr the spil and yet they themselves will becme the spil And then we see the familiar references in vs.5-6 t Christ s pwer t rule And the fllwing verses repeat the kind f devastatin that will cme upn the enemy frces as the are crushed But the Lrd will be raised up and their plans t destry will cme t nthing Like giving birth t chaff Nw t end the chapter briefly, cnsider sme f the the details Isaiah ffers f that time Is. 33:13 Yu wh are far away, hear what I have dne; And yu wh are near, acknwledge My might. Is. 33:14 Sinners in Zin are terrified; Trembling has seized the gdless. Wh amng us can live with the cnsuming fire? Wh amng us can live with cntinual burning? Is. 33:15 He wh walks righteusly and speaks with sincerity, He wh rejects unjust gain And shakes his hands s that they hld n bribe; He wh stps his ears frm hearing abut bldshed And shuts his eyes frm lking upn evil; Is. 33:16 He will dwell n the heights, His refuge will be the impregnable rck; His bread will be given him, His water will be sure. Is. 33:17 Yur eyes will see the King in His beauty; They will behld a far-distant land. Is. 33:18 Yur heart will meditate n terrr: Where is he wh cunts? Where is he wh weighs? Where is he wh cunts the twers? 2010 Verse By Verse Ministry f San Antni ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Isaiah 30B-33! 12 Is. 33:19 Yu will n lnger see a fierce peple, A peple f unintelligible speech which n ne cmprehends, Of a stammering tngue which n ne understands. Is. 33:20 Lk upn Zin, the city f ur appinted feasts; Yur eyes will see Jerusalem, an undisturbed habitatin, A tent which will nt be flded; Its stakes will never be pulled up, Nr any f its crds be trn apart. Is. 33:21 But there the majestic One, the LORD, will be fr us A place f rivers and wide canals On which n bat with ars will g, And n which n mighty ship will pass Is. 33:22 Fr the LORD is ur judge, The LORD is ur lawgiver, The LORD is ur king; He will save us Is. 33:23 Yur tackle hangs slack; It cannt hld the base f its mast firmly, Nr spread ut the sail. Then the prey f an abundant spil will be divided; The lame will take the plunder. Is. 33:24 And n resident will say, I am sick ; The peple wh dwell there will be frgiven their iniquity. First, t thse wh are still apstate and withut saving faith in the Messiah are called t hear what Gd has dne While thse wh are near shuld acknwledge His might This distinctin is the utline fr the rest f the chapter The believing remnant and unbelieving remnant and their different perspectives based n what the return f Christ means In v.14 the sinners are terrified Asking wh can live within cnsuming fire? N ne In cntrast, thse wh walk in righteusness, he will dwell n the heights Isaiah lists sme f the characteristics that mark these peple These aren t the means t righteusness but the prduct f righteusness btained by faith T that ne, his eyes see the King 2010 Verse By Verse Ministry f San Antni ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Isaiah 30B-33! 13 And yet in v.18 the righteus will ask where is terrr? Where is the ne wh cunts twers in preparatin fr battle? N where because there is n war and n terrr Specifically, in Isaiah s day the peple f Jerusalem were prmised t ne day nt see a peple with a strange tngue Because they wuld be gne, as Gd prmised And then weaving in a picture f the future, Isaiah begins t describe what they will see in a future Jerusalem A city which will never be flded A place with cnsiderably different gegraphy than tday Based n the descriptins f Zechariah 14 and Ezekiel 47, the city is many times large than tday A muntain with a fifty-square mile plateau Large rivers running ut f the Temple bth east and west But n ships will use these waters And therefre n war ships as Isaiah implies And frm that place the Lrd rules as the law giver Mst ntably, the peple f Israel dwelling there are frgiven their iniquity 2010 Verse By Verse Ministry f San Antni ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.
