Exdus 24 Finally, the Lrd gives Israel prmises and instructins cncerning their cnquest f the Prmised Land Ex. 23:20 Behld, I am ging t send an angel befre yu t guard yu alng the way and t bring yu int the place which I have prepared. Ex. 23:21 Be n yur guard befre him and bey his vice; d nt be rebellius tward him, fr he will nt pardn yur transgressin, since My name is in him. Ex. 23:22 But if yu truly bey his vice and d all that I say, then I will be an enemy t yur enemies and an adversary t yur adversaries. Ex. 23:23 Fr My angel will g befre yu and bring yu in t the land f the Amrites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Canaanites, the Hivites and the Jebusites; and I will cmpletely destry them. The Lrd prmises t deliver the peple int the Land safely by means f His Angel This Angel will lead Israel in the desert and int the Land The Angel will prtect Israel And He will ensure that Israel will enter int the land as prmised In ther wrds, the Angel will deliver them Obedience t this Angel is abslutely imperative In fact, if the natin desn t bey the Angel fully, if they prvke Him (meaning rebel against Him), the Angel will nt frgive them f this sin And this Angel has the Lrd s name in Him This is tells us that the Angel is pre-incarnate Jesus Jesus is the One in the Gdhead t frgive sins and t have the name f Gd S the Lrd has sent His Sn t lead Israel int the Prmised Land But if Israel rejects the Sn s leadership, they will be judged and nt frgiven 2013 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Exdus 24 2 f 20 We knw that in Numbers, this very thing happens The natin is led t the edge f the Prmised Land, but the peple believe the false reprt f the spies cncerning the Prmised Land And they fail t believe in the Angel f the Lrd, Wh has led Israel t that mment accrding t Gd s prmises S Israel failed t trust in Jesus and failed t believe in Gd s prmises S that generatin f Israel is judged and barred frm entering the Land An entire generatin f Israel is barred frm frgiveness and frm entering the land Hebrews makes the fllwing cmmentary n that mment Heb. 3:12 Take care, brethren, that there nt be in any ne f yu an evil, unbelieving heart that falls away frm the living Gd. Heb. 3:13 But encurage ne anther day after day, as lng as it is still called Tday, s that nne f yu will be hardened by the deceitfulness f sin. Heb. 3:14 Fr we have becme partakers f Christ, if we hld fast the beginning f ur assurance firm until the end, Heb. 3:15 while it is said, ı TODAY IF YOU HEAR HIS VOICE, ı DO NOT HARDEN YOUR HEARTS, AS WHEN THEY PROVOKED ME. Heb. 3:16 Fr wh prvked Him when they had heard? Indeed, did nt all thse wh came ut f Egypt led by Mses? Heb. 3:17 And with whm was He angry fr frty years? Was it nt with thse wh sinned, whse bdies fell in the wilderness? Heb. 3:18 And t whm did He swear that they wuld nt enter His rest, but t thse wh were disbedient? Heb. 3:19 S we see that they were nt able t enter because f unbelief. This mment has an interesting parallel t later days When Jesus came t Israel in His first cming, He tld them that if they blasphemed the Hly Spirit, then that generatin culd nt be saved 2013 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Exdus 24 3 f 20 And when the natin saw Jesus perfrm miracles and prve Himself t be the Messiah yet called Him Satan, they cmmitted that sin And that generatin was nt frgiven, and apart frm the church it was judged as well And when Jesus cmes again in His secnd cming, it will be fr the Jews f Tribulatin And they will cry ut fr Jesus accrding t Zechariah 12 S the generatin f Mses day was judged in the desert fr rejecting Jesus And the generatin f Jesus day was judged fr rejecting Jesus But a future generatin will be rescued when they finally call ut in faith as required Only by faith in Jesus can ne enter int the Prmised Land Ex. 23:24 Yu shall nt wrship their gds, nr serve them, nr d accrding t their deeds; but yu shall utterly verthrw them and break their sacred pillars in pieces. Ex. 23:25 But yu shall serve the LORD yur Gd, and He will bless yur bread and yur water; and I will remve sickness frm yur midst. Ex. 23:26 There shall be n ne miscarrying r barren in yur land; I will fulfill the number f yur days. Ex. 23:27 I will send My terrr ahead f yu, and thrw int cnfusin all the peple amng whm yu cme, and I will make all yur enemies turn their backs t yu. Ex. 23:28 I will send hrnets ahead f yu s that they will drive ut the Hivites, the Canaanites, and the Hittites befre yu. Ex. 23:29 I will nt drive them ut befre yu in a single year, that the land may nt becme deslate and the beasts f the field becme t numerus fr yu. Ex. 23:30 I will drive them ut befre yu little by little, until yu becme fruitful and take pssessin f the land. Ex. 23:31 I will fix yur bundary frm the Red Sea t the sea f the Philistines, and frm the wilderness t the River Euphrates; fr I will deliver the inhabitants f the land int yur hand, and yu will drive them ut befre yu. Ex. 23:32 Yu shall make n cvenant with them r with their gds. Ex. 23:33 They shall nt live in yur land, because they will make yu sin against Me; fr if yu serve their gds, it will surely be a snare t yu Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Exdus 24 4 f 20 These are the prmises the Lrd gave the peple cncerning their entry int the Land We knw frm Numbers that this generatin never makes it int the land Their disbedience t Gd s wrd stps them But in these prmises we see that the Lrd had prepared t grant them easy entry int the land All that was required f the peple was faith in Gd s wrd t carry ut what he prmised The Lrd prmised if they serve the Lrd and d nt wrship ther gds, then the Lrd will be their strength t verthrw and ccupy the land By His pwer, they will have the strength t displace the peple in the land And the peple will have physical strength t withstand the rigrs f the wrk N ne will miscarry N ne will be withut children And the Lrd will ensure the inhabitants f the land will flee in the face f Israel s advance Like hrnets that cause peple t flee in fear, the Canaanites will run frm the advancing Israelites Israel will nt even have t fight a battle We can see the Lrd s pwer t fulfill this prmise in the stry f Jerich The pace f this advance will be purpsely slw and methdical The land will nt be vacated t quickly s that the land will nt be injured by the lack f caretakers The exiting peple are plwing fields and restraining wild animals 2013 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Exdus 24 5 f 20 This is a blessing t Israel that the land wuld nt be abandned t quickly But this slw advance shuld nt be interpreted t mean that the Lrd was incapable f finishing the jb It means Israel shuldn t give up r lse heart Allw the Lrd the time t finish the wrk Unfrtunately, the peple f Israel did lse heart and becme distracted They decided t settle in and live amng the peple in the land They cmprmised and vilated Gd s cmmands Finally, ntice the bundary f the Land prmised t Israel The bundaries are much larger than any land Israel has ever held They stretch frm the Mediterranean Sea t mdern day Iraq And up t Damascus in the nrth We learn in Jshua that the land extends in the suth t the Brk f Egypt Since this is a territry Israel has never held, then we knw they are still t btain it The Lrd s wrd cannt g ut and nt be fulfilled S the this regin will smeday in the future belng t Israel In that future day, the peple f Israel will be able t keep the Lrd s cmmand t fllw Him in their whle heart Thus ends the rdinances f the Law That will be the glrified Israel that enters the Kingdm Nw having delivered the rdinances f the Law, the next divisin f the bk f Exdus is abut t begin And it starts with the fficial cvenant ceremny that brings the natin f Israel and the Lrd int a pwer cvenant 2013 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Exdus 24 6 f 20 Ex. 24:1 Then He said t Mses, Cme up t the LORD, yu and Aarn, Nadab and Abihu and seventy f the elders f Israel, and yu shall wrship at a distance. Ex. 24:2 Mses alne, hwever, shall cme near t the LORD, but they shall nt cme near, nr shall the peple cme up with him. Ex. 24:3 Then Mses came and recunted t the peple all the wrds f the LORD and all the rdinances; and all the peple answered with ne vice and said, All the wrds which the LORD has spken we will d! Ex. 24:4 Mses wrte dwn all the wrds f the LORD. Then he arse early in the mrning, and built an altar at the ft f the muntain with twelve pillars fr the twelve tribes f Israel. Ex. 24:5 He sent yung men f the sns f Israel, and they ffered burnt fferings and sacrificed yung bulls as peace fferings t the LORD. Ex. 24:6 Mses tk half f the bld and put it in basins, and the ther half f the bld he sprinkled n the altar. Ex. 24:7 Then he tk the bk f the cvenant and read it in the hearing f the peple; and they said, All that the LORD has spken we will d, and we will be bedient! Ex. 24:8 S Mses tk the bld and sprinkled it n the peple, and said, Behld the bld f the cvenant, which the LORD has made with yu in accrdance with all these wrds. In v.1, the Lrd cmmands Mses t return up the muntain t meet with the Lrd again This will be the furth time Mses has been called up t meet with the Lrd Gd calls fr Mses t be accmpanied by the seventy elders f Israel and Aarn and Aarn s tw ldest sns These additinal men serve as witnesses They were chsen fr specific reasns The seventy elders represent the peple As representatives, they can speak fr the peple and bind them in this cvenant Aarn are the beginning f the priesthd f Israel They will be called t fficiate in the tabernacle And they will versee the sacrificial system f the Law 2013 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Exdus 24 7 f 20 Therefre, they are the agents f Israel t carry ut the Law n behalf f the peple And they are present t serve as the first in an unbrken line f Israel t testify t the cvenant Even tday, the nly tribe f Israel we can still identify in the culture are descendants f Levi, the priestly tribe Their names are the key t their identity: Levy, Levin, Levinsn, Chen, Khn, etc. These are Levite names During the Tribulatin t cme, the tabernacle and sacrificial system will be reestablished accrding t this cvenant And the priesthd will reemerge amng the descendants f Levi S they are witnesses t the agreement alng with Mses But Mses serves an unique rle in Israel, since nly Mses can apprach the Lrd We ve watches as Mses has mved back and frth between the natin f Israel and the Lrd in the clud This mving back and frth frm Gd t the peple and back cmmunicates thrugh actin that Mses was the mediatr Gd required the peple t wrk thrugh the services f a mediatr Gd wuld talk t Mses and Mses wuld talk t the peple Gd wrked thrugh this restrictin t teach men a lessn abut hw men btain a relatinship with Gd Man s sin creates a necessary barrier between himself and the Lrd, ne man cannt crss by himself He must have a mediatr t bridge the distance Ntice in v.2 that nly Mses may cme near t the Lrd 2013 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Exdus 24 8 f 20 Men may knw f Gd and that He exists Men may see physical manifestatins f His presence and pwer, just as Israel saw in Egypt And men may even hear frm Him But men may nt cme near t Gd, whether physically r spiritually, apart frm a mediatr Befre Mses and the ther men apprach the Lrd t wrship, Mses first ges t the peple in v.3 and delivers the entire wrds f the rdinances At this pint, the peple all spke as if with ne vice declaring they will d all the wrds the Lrd has spken With this declaratin, the natin is cmmitted t keep the Cvenant at Sinai, which als included the Law As we ve discussed befre, the peple culdn t keep their wn wrd, and s the penalties f the cvenant were assured But at this pint, it has been established And it is established fr this generatin and all generatins t cme in Israel It is a cvenant with a natin f peple, nt with a certain grup f peple All wh are brn int that natin are already party t the cvenant Nw cmes time t seal the cvenant with a traditinal ritual First, the cvenant is recrded Secndly, Mses builds an altar and stands up twelve pillars The pillars represent the twelve tribes f Israel And as we discussed earlier, an altar has nly ne purpse It is a place f sacrifice S Mses is preparing t make a sacrifice Cvenants were agreements established in bld 2013 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Exdus 24 9 f 20 The symblgy f the bld was that a life has been pured ut t establish this cvenant And shuld either party break this cvenant, a life will be taken Furthermre, the bld is applied t each persn, marking them t indicate their agreement in the terms f the cvenant In the Abrahamic Cvenant, the Lrd alne mved thrugh the bld Shwing that nly the Lrd was binding Himself t the terms f that cvenant But in this scene, bth Israel and the altar are sprinkled with the bld The peple are bligated t keep their part, and the Lrd is bligated, as signified by the place f wrship Finally, nce mre Mses reads the cvenant t the peple And nce mre, they agree t all that was written And Mses declares that by this bld, the peple have entered int a cvenantal relatinship with the Lrd In this scene, we can find sme pwerful and imprtant pictures f the cvenant that Gd later brings t Israel and the Church in Christ And the definitive cmmentary n this mment are fund in the bk f Hebrews Heb. 9:11 But when Christ appeared as a high priest f the gd things t cme, He entered thrugh the greater and mre perfect tabernacle, nt made with hands, that is t say, nt f this creatin; Heb. 9:12 and nt thrugh the bld f gats and calves, but thrugh His wn bld, He entered the hly place nce fr all, having btained eternal redemptin. Heb. 9:13 Fr if the bld f gats and bulls and the ashes f a heifer sprinkling thse wh have been defiled sanctify fr the cleansing f the flesh, Heb. 9:14 hw much mre will the bld f Christ, wh thrugh the eternal Spirit ffered Himself withut blemish t Gd, cleanse yur cnscience frm dead wrks t serve the living Gd? Heb. 9:15 Fr this reasn He is the mediatr f a new cvenant, s that, since a death has taken place fr the redemptin f the transgressins that were cmmitted under the first 2013 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Exdus f 20 cvenant, thse wh have been called may receive the prmise f the eternal inheritance. Heb. 9:16 Fr where a cvenant is, there must f necessity be the death f the ne wh made it. Heb. 9:17 Fr a cvenant is valid nly when men are dead, fr it is never in frce while the ne wh made it lives. Heb. 9:18 Therefre even the first cvenant was nt inaugurated withut bld. Heb. 9:19 Fr when every cmmandment had been spken by Mses t all the peple accrding t the Law, he tk the bld f the calves and the gats, with water and scarlet wl and hyssp, and sprinkled bth the bk itself and all the peple, Heb. 9:20 saying, THIS IS THE BLOOD OF THE COVENANT WHICH GOD COMMANDED YOU. Fr a cmplete explanatin f this passage, I wuld direct yu t ur Hebrews study, but let s address a few pints as they apply t Exdus 24 First, the writer draws a cmparisn between Mses and Christ as mediatrs f cvenants Mses rle as mediatr was t bridge a physical gap between the peple and the Lrd Mses went up the muntain t meet with Gd And then he went back dwn t meet the peple Hw did the peple gain the benefit f Mses mediatin? First, Mses cnnected the peple t Gd He carried the peple s agreement up t Gd And he carried the Lrd s assurances back t the peple Secndly, invited them int making a cnfessin f agreement with the wrd f Gd Mses cmmanded the peple that if they agreed t the cvenant, than they must keep the Law t be righteus If they vilated the Law, then they wuld have brken the cvenant and wuld be judged unrighteus And the peple said they wuld bey all that the Lrd spke Then they were jined with the Lrd in a cvenant 2013 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Exdus f 20 Lastly, Mses sprinkled bth parties with bld, establishing the agreement in bld and giving it frce Mses applied the bld t bth the peple and the altar n earth, making the agreement binding n bth Gd intentinally chse a muntain n which t appear t the peple, s that the imagery f separatin f height and distance wuld be present The Lrd culd have appeared t men n a flat plain But the muntain served t reinfrce the truth that men need a mediatr t reach Gd Wh is in Heaven S it became apparent t all the peple that Mses was a mediatr wh bridged a physical gap between Gd and Israel in rder t frm this cvenant f Law But Mses culdn t bridge the spiritual gap that separates men and Gd Mses culdn t g up t Heaven and sacrifice in the Heavenly tabernacle That wuld require an even greater Mediatr Smene Wh culd pass the test f sinlessness required t enter that Hly Place S Hebrews tells us that Jesus acted as ur Mediatr fr this greater cvenant Hw did we gain the benefit f Jesus mediatin? First, He descended t earth t deliver the news f the cvenant t the peple He traveled the distance frm Gd s Heavenly place, where the Heavenly temple reside Where a Heavenly altar has been established Where the bld f much greater sacrifice can be applied And then this Mediatr made the trip back t the right hand f the Father t serve as ur intercessr As Paul explained 2013 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Exdus f 20 Eph. 4:8 Therefre it says, ı WHEN HE ASCENDED ON HIGH, HE LED CAPTIVE A HOST OF CAPTIVES, ı AND HE GAVE GIFTS TO MEN. Eph. 4:9 (Nw this expressin, He ascended, what des it mean except that He als had descended int the lwer parts f the earth? Eph. 4:10 He wh descended is Himself als He wh ascended far abve all the heavens, s that He might fill all things.) S Jesus fulfilled the picture f a mediatr mving between Gd n high and the peple belw Secndly, the Lrd delivers ur agreement t the cvenant But unlike Mses, the Lrd serves that purpse in a unique way Mses had t travel up t Gd and then back t men t cmplete the cmmunicatin prcess But Jesus is the Wrd and His Spirit lives in us, s the prcess fr us t cmmunicate ur agreement with the cvenant is s simple, many peple ver lk it Rm. 10:5 Fr Mses writes that the man wh practices the righteusness which is based n law shall live by that righteusness. Rm. 10:6 But the righteusness based n faith speaks as fllws: DO NOT SAY IN YOUR HEART, WHO WILL ASCEND INTO HEAVEN? (that is, t bring Christ dwn), Rm. 10:7 r WHO WILL DESCEND INTO THE ABYSS? (that is, t bring Christ up frm the dead). Rm. 10:8 But what des it say? THE WORD IS NEAR YOU, IN YOUR MOUTH AND IN YOUR HEART that is, the wrd f faith which we are preaching, Rm. 10:9 that if yu cnfess with yur muth Jesus as Lrd, and believe in yur heart that Gd raised Him frm the dead, yu will be saved; Can yu see mre clearly what Paul is talking abut nw in Rmans 10? He is refering t Mses rle as a mediatr ging up t Gd and cming back dwn t the peple In that earlier cvenant, righteusness was defined as living the law perfectly But in the New Cvenant, righteusness is defined as faith alne 2013 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Exdus f 20 And Paul says we jin in this new cvenant nt by seeking smene t enter Heaven r descend int Hell fr us That has already been dne nce fr all men S nw we gain the benefit f Christ s mediatin simply by a cnfessin f ur muth We enter the New Cvenant thrugh a Wrd that is near t us By Christ, we are near t Gd already We nly need t say the wrd f faith and we enter the cvenant Finally, Christ s bld enacted the cvenant Ntice that a cvenant (r testament, als called a will) is nt in effect until the death f the One wh makes it Our Last WIll and Testament desn t g int effect until we die S the New Cvenant (r new testament) required a a shedding f bld befre it tk effect Jesus bld was sprinkled n the Heavenly tabernacle altar when Christ ascended Secndly, that bld is applied t us by the baptism f the Hly Spirit And we re-enact that applicatin f bld in the Lrd s Supper bservance Jhn 6:53 S Jesus said t them, Truly, truly, I say t yu, unless yu eat the flesh f the Sn f Man and drink His bld, yu have n life in yurselves. Jhn 6:54 He wh eats My flesh and drinks My bld has eternal life, and I will raise him up n the last day. Jhn 6:55 Fr My flesh is true fd, and My bld is true drink. Jhn 6:56 He wh eats My flesh and drinks My bld abides in Me, and I in him. Jhn 6:57 As the living Father sent Me, and I live because f the Father, s he wh eats Me, he als will live because f Me Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Exdus f 20 Eph. 2:13 But nw in Christ Jesus yu wh frmerly were far ff have been brught near by the bld f Christ. S the cvenant f Law has been enacted between Gd and His peple The natin f Israel is nw frever bund t the Lrd in a special way They are called t live a Law that will frever distinguish them frm the rest f the peple n earth And they will be judged strictly by this Law It will be the cause f their temprary dwnfall And it will be the basis fr their rise again But this cvenant is nt the means f persnal salvatin fr any Jew r any man at all It is a cvenant that establishes a natin And thrugh that natin, Gd intends t accmplish remarkable things Ex. 24:9 Then Mses went up with Aarn, Nadab and Abihu, and seventy f the elders f Israel, Ex. 24:10 and they saw the Gd f Israel; and under His feet there appeared t be a pavement f sapphire, as clear as the sky itself. Ex. 24:11 Yet He did nt stretch ut His hand against the nbles f the sns f Israel; and they saw Gd, and they ate and drank. Ex. 24:12 Nw the LORD said t Mses, Cme up t Me n the muntain and remain there, and I will give yu the stne tablets with the law and the cmmandment which I have written fr their instructin. Ex. 24:13 S Mses arse with Jshua his servant, and Mses went up t the muntain f Gd. Ex. 24:14 But t the elders he said, Wait here fr us until we return t yu. And behld, Aarn and Hur are with yu; whever has a legal matter, let him apprach them. Ex. 24:15 Then Mses went up t the muntain, and the clud cvered the muntain. Ex. 24:16 The glry f the LORD rested n Munt Sinai, and the clud cvered it fr six days; and n the seventh day He called t Mses frm the midst f the clud. Ex. 24:17 And t the eyes f the sns f Israel the appearance f the glry f the LORD was like a cnsuming fire n the muntain tp. Ex. 24:18 Mses entered the midst f the clud as he went up t the muntain; and Mses was n the muntain frty days and frty nights Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Exdus f 20 Having signed the cvenant, Mses and the ther men ascend the muntain t meet with Gd as directed There they see the Gd f Israel The questin immediately becmes what did they see And as with any scripture, we must interpret this passage in light f all scripture We can t assume an interpretatin fr this passage that cntradicts ther scripture Fr example, we read this elsewhere: 1Jhn 4:12 N ne has seen Gd at any time; if we lve ne anther, Gd abides in us, and His lve is perfected in us. Jhn declares that n man has even seen Gd at any time This must certainly include this time Then later in Exdus we read Ex. 33:20 But He said, Yu cannt see My face, fr n man can see Me and live! Ex. 33:21 Then the LORD said, Behld, there is a place by Me, and yu shall stand there n the rck; Ex. 33:22 and it will cme abut, while My glry is passing by, that I will put yu in the cleft f the rck and cver yu with My hand until I have passed by. Gd Himself declares t Mses that Mses cannt see Gd s face and live If Mses culdn t see Gd s face and live, then certainly Mses never saw Gd s face, including in Exdus 24 Finally, we remember that earlier in this chapter the Lrd said t Mses that these men were permitted t wrship frm a distance But nly Mses culd apprach clsely 2013 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Exdus f 20 S these men saw smething f Gd, but whatever they saw, we knw they never saw Gd in any true sense, at least nt His face, and they were never very clse We get a clue f what they did see in v.10 when we see a reference t His feet We can safely assume that when these men fund themselves in the presence f the Lrd, even frm a distance, that they had a reactin similar t reprts we read elsewhere They were prstrate n the grund in fear f their lives And frm that vantage pint, the nly thing they saw was Gd s feet and the pavement underneath We can safely assume this was an appearance f the Shechinah glry In v.11, the men are given a chance t eat and drink This meal is anther imprtant mment in the cvenant Cvenants were cncluded with a meal using the meat sacrificed The meal was a sign that these parties were nw allies At this pint, the cvenant ritual is ended, and the next phase f the giving f the Law is ready t begin Mses escrts men back t the camp f Israel, and he instructs them t stay behind rest f the party return t the camp f Israel The tw men wh held up Mses arms in battle are placed in charge f the camp f Israel And if anyne has smething that requires judgment, these tw men wuld handle it Then Mses and Jshua head back up the muntain fr the fifth time Jshua will accmpany Mses fr part f the trip But at v.15 and beynd the narrative nly mentins Jshua S we can safely assume Jshua stps smewhere alng the way Mses waits up n the muntain fr six days utside the clud 2013 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Exdus f 20 On the seventh day the Lrd calls Mses int the clud n the seventh day The glry f Gd in the clud is like a cnsuming fire n the tp f the muntain Mses remains in the clud fr frty days and nights The number frty is a number f testing in scripture In this case, the test isn t fr Mses The test is fr the peple, a test they will fail badly when we jin them in chapter 32 Fr chapters 25-31, we will study the descriptin f the tabernacle and the priestly duties in the tabernacle The study will mve fairly quickly thrugh these chapters We will lk at the details lng enugh t get a gd sense f the structure But ur main fcus will be n the ways the tabernacle reflect Christ and the Heavenly tabernacle Let s begin with chapter 25 Ex. 25:1 Then the LORD spke t Mses, saying, Ex. 25:2 Tell the sns f Israel t raise a cntributin fr Me; frm every man whse heart mves him yu shall raise My cntributin. Ex. 25:3 This is the cntributin which yu are t raise frm them: gld, silver and brnze, Ex. 25:4 blue, purple and scarlet material, fine linen, gat hair, Ex. 25:5 rams skins dyed red, prpise skins, acacia wd, Ex. 25:6 il fr lighting, spices fr the aninting il and fr the fragrant incense, Ex. 25:7 nyx stnes and setting stnes fr the ephd and fr the breastpiece. Ex. 25:8 Let them cnstruct a sanctuary fr Me, that I may dwell amng them. Ex. 25:9 Accrding t all that I am ging t shw yu, as the pattern f the tabernacle and the pattern f all its furniture, just s yu shall cnstruct it. Why des the Lrd cmmand Israel t build this structure? It s purpse and functin are intimately cnnected t the Law already given t Israel 2013 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Exdus f 20 The cvenant Israel nw finds itself in demands perfectin t the rdinances Thse rdinances, including the first ten cmmandments, are strict and unfrgiving Even ne vilatin f these laws results in a breaking f the cvenant And the breaking f a cvenant meant the death f the ne wh brke it S Gd prvides fr a place and a system by which Israel culd address their sins under the cvenant withut facing destructin The terms f the cvenant itself prvided fr this manner f atnement Were it nt incrprated int the cvenant, then there wuld have been n way t address the sin f the peple Ntice that even in the giving f the cvenant itself, first came the Law, then the agreement, then a prvisin fr the eventual sin Gd knew sin wuld cme and was prepared t address it S the tabernacle is a meeting place where Gd can dwell with men And men can address their sin under the cvenant befre Gd The pening f this chapter gives us a chance t nte the supply fr this prject The material fr Gd s huse wuld cme frm the peple Gd tells Mses t take a cntributin The cntributin will be frm every man whse heart is mved What will mve their heart? Clearly, the Spirit will mve men t prvide fr the wrk Gd intends t perfrm This has always been the way Gd wrks 2013 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Exdus f 20 Gd s wrk will never languish due t a lack f hearts mtivated t supprt the wrk In fact, it s fair t say that we might fairly determine where Gd is wrking by where hearts are being mved t supprt the wrk This is nt a perfect rule, f curse, because men may be prmpted t fund wrks fr ther, ungdly reasns But if yu are endeavring t cnduct ministry and that ministry depends n the prvisin f thers, then match yur wrk t the supprt yu receive Fr it may be a fair measure f the Lrd s intentins In this case, the Lrd desired t perfrm a significant wrk, ne f great imprtance and wealth reflecting the glry f Gd The list f materials is quite impressive And we will lk at each in detail as we mve thrugh the cnstructin In v.9 we have the mst imprtant clue t understanding the intricate descriptins f the tabernacle in the fllwing chapters Everything we will study is a pattern The tabernacle itself is built accrding t the pattern (r blueprint) that Gd is prviding fr Mses But the wrd als alludes t the way the tabernacle itself is a pattern r picture f ther thers First, it is a picture f Christ and His wrk f redemptin Yu will be amazed at all the pictures f Christ cntained in this structure We will lk at them as we mve thrugh the details f the building Secndly, the tabernacle ffers a pattern fr salvatin, fr the way by which we may enter the Lrd s presence, and fr many ther details f His plan fr redemptin Included in the tabernacle are pictures f the Gspels 2013 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Exdus f 20 Pictures f the Church Pictures f the Kingdm Thirdly, the tabernacle is a pattern f what stands in Heaven We will see hw this small unimpsing structure n earth mirrrs a far greater structure in Heaven We will begin ur study f the tabernacle cnstructin in earnest next time we meet 2013 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.
