Exdus 15 Israel has finally and frever escaped the Pharah f Egypt Just as the Lrd prmised Abraham, the natin f Israel came ut f Egypt after 400 years They have crssed the Gulf f Aqaba and entered int Midian And they have just witnessed the destructin f the Egyptians army At the end f chapter 14, Mses summarizes the mment Ex. 14:30 Thus the LORD saved Israel that day frm the hand f the Egyptians, and Israel saw the Egyptians dead n the seashre. Ex. 14:31 When Israel saw the great pwer which the LORD had used against the Egyptians, the peple feared the LORD, and they believed in the LORD and in His servant Mses. Mses says that Israel saw the destructin f Egypt, feared Gd, believed in the Lrd and in Mses While this testimny sunds encuraging, such is nt the case Accrding t the Psalms, we read this Psa. 106:4 Remember me, O LORD, in Yur favr tward Yur peple; Visit me with Yur salvatin, Psa. 106:5 That I may see the prsperity f Yur chsen nes, That I may rejice in the gladness f Yur natin, That I may glry with Yur inheritance. Psa. 106:6 We have sinned like ur fathers, We have cmmitted iniquity, we have behaved wickedly. Psa. 106:7 Our fathers in Egypt did nt understand Yur wnders; They did nt remember Yur abundant kindnesses, But rebelled by the sea, at the Red Sea. Psa. 106:8 Nevertheless He saved them fr the sake f His name, That He might make His pwer knwn. Psa. 106:9 Thus He rebuked the Red Sea and it dried up, And He led them thrugh the deeps, as thrugh the wilderness. Psa. 106:10 S He saved them frm the hand f the ne wh hated them, And redeemed them frm the hand f the enemy. Psa. 106:11 The waters cvered their adversaries; 2012 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Exdus 15 2 f 18 Nt ne f them was left. Psa. 106:12 Then they believed His wrds; They sang His praise. Psa. 106:13 They quickly frgt His wrks; They did nt wait fr His cunsel, What Israel saw and what they believed was nt what it first appeared t be The Psalmist tells us that the peple rebelled at the Red Sea Nevertheless the Lrd rescued the natin, but nt because they were deserving f such rescue Rather, the Lrd rescued Israel fr His wn name What this means is Gd rescued Israel because He has prmised Abraham He wuld d s Had the Lrd allwed Israel t perish in their unbelief, the Lrd wuld have gne against His wrd Therefre, we see that Gd s actins in saving men, whether physically r spiritually, are based upn what prduces the greatest glry fr His name His saving pwer is reserved fr His name sake, nt fr ur sake We were save fr His glry Thrughut the stry f Israel in the desert, this theme repeats itself The peple f Israel are prtrayed repeatedly as disbedient, unbelieving and nes wh test the Lrd s patience and gdness The writer f Hebrews sums up the dispssessin f this generatin f Israel in this way Heb. 3:16 Fr wh prvked Him when they had heard? Indeed, did nt all thse wh came ut f Egypt led by Mses? Heb. 3:17 And with whm was He angry fr frty years? Was it nt with thse wh sinned, whse bdies fell in the wilderness? Heb. 3:18 And t whm did He swear that they wuld nt enter His rest, but t thse wh were disbedient? Heb. 3:19 S we see that they were nt able t enter because f unbelief Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Exdus 15 3 f 18 Heb. 4:1 Therefre, let us fear if, while a prmise remains f entering His rest, any ne f yu may seem t have cme shrt f it. Heb. 4:2 Fr indeed we have had gd news preached t us, just as they als; but the wrd they heard did nt prfit them, because it was nt united by faith in thse wh heard. Exdus shws us the early stages f Israel s disbedience in the desert Mst ntably, we ll witness the rebellin while Mses meets Gd n the muntain And it s helpful fr us t remember that this generatin f Israel is described in Scripture as an unbelieving generatin f Israel And as a result f unbelief, they are nt permitted t enter the prmised land Symblically, the prmised land is a picture f the kingdm S this generatin pictures the rebellin f unbelieving Israel Frm there, we prceed t Chapter 15, which is set in the same mment, immediately after the army f Pharah is swallwed up in the sea This chapter cmpletes the third sectin fr the bk The peple f Israel amazed as they see the Lrd s wrk And under the influence f the Spirit, Mses and Miriam, Aarn s sister lead the natin in a sng f prphecy Chapter 15 is dminates by these tw sngs, the sng f the Mses and the sng f Miriam These are victry hymns sung t celebrate the Lrd s great victry T this day, these hymns are still part f wrship in many synaggues These sngs are a frm f petry, and as we study them we need t understand smething abut Hebrew petry Western petry is primarily fcused n the sund f wrds: the rhyme and rhythm and alliteratin 2012 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Exdus 15 4 f 18 But Hebrew petry is based n parallelism in the meaning f adjining lines In the mst cmmn arrangement, lines f text are paired up Each line in the pair is saying the same thing in different ways The art f Hebrew petry is in finding different ways t express the same thught within a pair Yu see this pattern thrughut the OT Petry is frmed in pairs f lines, in which each pair is a single thught The pairs f lines are then gruped int strphes, nt unlike stanzas f petry Each strphe is a single tpic r thught expressed in detail by each pair f lines The sng f Mses has three strphes The first strphe runs frm vs.1-5 The secnd frm vs.6-10 And the final strphe frm vs The sng f Mses is prphetic, and it is a pivtal mment in Scripture In fact, this sng is s imprtant, that Revelatin 15 tells us it is sung immediately befre the Bwl judgments are pured ut n the Earth in the time f Tribulatin Obviusly, the prphetic meaning f these verses extends all the way int the last days, days that are still yet in ur future Ex. 15:1 Then Mses and the sns f Israel sang this sng t the LORD, and said, I will sing t the LORD, fr He is highly exalted; The hrse and its rider He has hurled int the sea. Ex. 15:2 The LORD is my strength and sng, And He has becme my salvatin; This is my Gd, and I will praise Him; My father s Gd, and I will extl Him Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Exdus 15 5 f 18 Ex. 15:3 The LORD is a warrir; The LORD is His name. Ex. 15:4 Pharah s charits and his army He has cast int the sea; And the chicest f his fficers are drwned in the Red Sea. Ex. 15:5 The deeps cver them; They went dwn int the depths like a stne. Immediately, yu can ntice the parallelism f Hebrew petry, the pairs f lines wrking tgether t cmplete a thught The first strphe recunts the might f Gd t cnquer Israel s enemy The sng begins with a praise f Gd fighting strength He is Jehvah, which always means the cvenant keeping Gd He drwned the Pharah s men The secnd strphe begins in v.6 Ex. 15:6 Yur right hand, O LORD, is majestic in pwer, Yur right hand, O LORD, shatters the enemy. Ex. 15:7 And in the greatness f Yur excellence Yu verthrw thse wh rise up against Yu; Yu send frth Yur burning anger, and it cnsumes them as chaff. Ex. 15:8 At the blast f Yur nstrils the waters were piled up, The flwing waters std up like a heap; The deeps were cngealed in the heart f the sea. Ex. 15:9 The enemy said, I will pursue, I will vertake, I will divide the spil; My desire shall be gratified against them; ı I will draw ut my swrd, my hand will destry them. Ex. 15:10 Yu blew with Yur wind, the sea cvered them; They sank like lead in the mighty waters. Gd shattered the Pharah s army He verthrew thse wh rise up In His anger, He cnsumed them When the Lrd divided the waters, He prvided an pprtunity fr Israel t escape 2012 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Exdus 15 6 f 18 But this same escape als gave the enemy reasn t believe Israel was weak and culd be cnquered And just as the enemy thught they were triumphant, the enemy was destryed by Gd s hand The final strphe is starts in v.11 Ex. 15:11 Wh is like Yu amng the gds, O LORD? Wh is like Yu, majestic in hliness, Awesme in praises, wrking wnders? Ex. 15:12 Yu stretched ut Yur right hand, The earth swallwed them. Ex. 15:13 In Yur lvingkindness Yu have led the peple whm Yu have redeemed; In Yur strength Yu have guided them t Yur hly habitatin. Ex. 15:14 The peples have heard, they tremble; Anguish has gripped the inhabitants f Philistia. Ex. 15:15 Then the chiefs f Edm were dismayed; The leaders f Mab, trembling grips them; All the inhabitants f Canaan have melted away. Ex. 15:16 Terrr and dread fall upn them; By the greatness f Yur arm they are mtinless as stne; Until Yur peple pass ver, O LORD, Until the peple pass ver whm Yu have purchased. Ex. 15:17 Yu will bring them and plant them in the muntain f Yur inheritance, The place, O LORD, which Yu have made fr Yur dwelling, The sanctuary, O Lrd, which Yur hands have established. Ex. 15:18 The LORD shall reign frever and ever. Having destryed Israel s enemy, Mses asks wh is like the Lrd? He has defended Israel and redeemed His peple And the peples f the earth have heard f this deliverance, Mses declares Thse f Philistia and Edm and Canaan Their hearts have melted away at the news that Gd is fighting fr Israel These peple have terrr at the prspect f Israel s victry The Lrd s peple will passver int their lands 2012 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Exdus 15 7 f 18 Ultimately, Israel will reach Gd s hly muntain and will receive their inheritance in the sanctuary f the Lrd And in that place, the Lrd will reign frever and ever Mses ends his sng with a summary f the events f chapter 14 Ex. 15:19 Fr the hrses f Pharah with his charits and his hrsemen went int the sea, and the LORD brught back the waters f the sea n them, but the sns f Israel walked n dry land thrugh the midst f the sea. Befre we examine Mses sng in detail, let s als nte the secnd sng f the chapter, that f Miriam, Mses sister Ex. 15:20 Miriam the prphetess, Aarn s sister, tk the timbrel in her hand, and all the wmen went ut after her with timbrels and with dancing. Ex. 15:21 Miriam answered them, ı Sing t the LORD, fr He is highly exalted; ı The hrse and his rider He has hurled int the sea. Here sng repeats the essential theme f Mses sng Ntice that Miriam is called the sister f Aarn But that wuld als make her Mses sister, f curse She is a prphetess, and she is the first wman in the Bible t carry that title This means that the sng she sings is als are als divinely inspired Her statement in v.21 seems t be nthing mre than a repetitin f Mses sng But in reality, her ffers us smething much mre prfund T examine this sng prperly, I first need t establish a framewrk r cnstruct As we ve already nted, the sng f Mses is divided int three parts The first part recunts is very specific t the events f the Exdus 2012 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Exdus 15 8 f 18 It mentins the Red Sea and Pharah and charits The secnd part beginning in v.6 starts t change There is still mentin f seas piling up and the deep s we knw that Mses is still talking abut the same event But the sng begins t describe the event in a mre general way Mses talks abut Gd shattering Israel s enemy Overthrwing thse wh rise up against Gd Cnsuming enemies with burning wrath The enemy thinks it has wn right befre it is defeated Finally, the third part becmes almst entirely divrced frm the cntext f the Exdus The earth swallws the enemies f Gd While Gd has redeemed His peple The wrld has seen Gd s pwer and trembles Gd s peple meet Gd at Zin, the hly Muntain While Gd resides frever in His sanctuary Ntice the prgressin in the sng It mves frm mre t less specific cncerning the Exdus By this prgressin, we can see that Mses is speaking nt nly abut the events f that day but als f future events in Israel In fact, this prphecy is speaking f the times f Tribulatin, when Israel will be redeemed ultimately frm the Antichrist We have already established hw the Exdus stry is a picture f the end times Israel in bndage and set free by a redeemer The redeemer must cnquer Israel s enemies, first thrugh a series f judgments and plagues Ultimately, Israel is set free thrugh a sacrifice f the Lamb 2012 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Exdus 15 9 f 18 And nce the natin is freed, it is led t wrship Gd at His hly muntain Nw Mses is prphetically making that cnnectin fr us The first third f the sng establishes the fact f Gd s deliverance f Israel frm Egypt The secnd third f the sng begins t mve us away frm the events f Exdus and tward the future wrk f Gd in Tribulatin The real switch ccurs in the third strphe Mses begins t describes events that are future t his day In v.13 Mses says that Gd s peple will be redeemed while the wrld will fear what they see Says varius natins will tremble in fear f Gd s wrk The event was just cmpleted, yet Mses is already talking abut the effect it had n the wrld Jsh. 2:8 Nw befre they lay dwn, she came up t them n the rf, Jsh. 2:9 and said t the men, I knw that the LORD has given yu the land, and that the terrr f yu has fallen n us, and that all the inhabitants f the land have melted away befre yu. Jsh. 2:10 Fr we have heard hw the LORD dried up the water f the Red Sea befre yu when yu came ut f Egypt, and what yu did t the tw kings f the Amrites wh were beynd the Jrdan, t Sihn and Og, whm yu utterly destryed. Jsh. 2:11 When we heard it, ur hearts melted and n curage remained in any man any lnger because f yu; fr the LORD yur Gd, He is Gd in heaven abve and n earth beneath. Jsh. 2:24 They said t Jshua, Surely the LORD has given all the land int ur hands; mrever, all the inhabitants f the land have melted away befre us. S we knw that the third strphe is lking int the future, and that future extends much farther than Jshua The Lrd will lead Israel int their inheritance, t the muntain, where the Lrd will reign frever and ever Is this muntain Mt Sinai in Midian? 2012 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Exdus f 18 Is it Mt Mriah in David s day Or is it anther muntain? Heb. 12:18 Fr yu have nt cme t a muntain that can be tuched and t a blazing fire, and t darkness and glm and whirlwind, Heb. 12:19 and t the blast f a trumpet and the sund f wrds which sund was such that thse wh heard begged that n further wrd be spken t them. Heb. 12:20 Fr they culd nt bear the cmmand, IF EVEN A BEAST TOUCHES THE MOUNTAIN, IT WILL BE STONED. Heb. 12:21 And s terrible was the sight, that Mses said, I AM FULL OF FEAR and trembling. Heb. 12:22 But yu have cme t Munt Zin and t the city f the living Gd, the heavenly Jerusalem, and t myriads f angels, Heb. 12:23 t the general assembly and church f the firstbrn wh are enrlled in heaven, and t Gd, the Judge f all, and t the spirits f the righteus made perfect, Heb. 12:24 and t Jesus, the mediatr f a new cvenant, and t the sprinkled bld, which speaks better than the bld f Abel. Heb. 12:25 See t it that yu d nt refuse Him wh is speaking. Fr if thse did nt escape when they refused him wh warned them n earth, much less will we escape wh turn away frm Him wh warns frm heaven. Heb. 12:26 And His vice shk the earth then, but nw He has prmised, saying, YET ONCE MORE I WILL SHAKE NOT ONLY THE EARTH, BUT ALSO THE HEAVEN. Heb. 12:27 This expressin, Yet nce mre, dentes the remving f thse things which can be shaken, as f created things, s that thse things which cannt be shaken may remain. Heb. 12:28 Therefre, since we receive a kingdm which cannt be shaken, let us shw gratitude, by which we may ffer t Gd an acceptable service with reverence and awe; Heb. 12:29 fr ur Gd is a cnsuming fire. The writer f Hebrews taught that the muntain the natin f Israel was brught befre was a muntain f glm and darkness This muntain is where Mses delivered the law, and it was a muntain that generated fear and glm This fear and dread was representative f the effect Gd s law has t cndemn sinful men Even Mses trembled But believers have been led int a different kingdm, ne f light and angels and Gd Himself 2012 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Exdus f 18 The Zin that will descend t earth nce all that has been created has been remved and smething unshakeable replaces it This is the muntain Mses is describing, the place where the Lrd reigns frever and ever But befre the natin f Israel will enter int that kingdm at the cnclusin f the Tribulatin, they will first endure the wrath f the antichrist and his frces Fr an in-depth understanding f these days, please refer t ur Revelatin curse nline The Tribulatin cmes t an end when the Lrd returns, slays the antichrist, receives Israel in faith and ushers in the Kingdm age Then the Lrd will plant Israel in their inheritance in the land, as Mses declares in v.17 Meanwhile, the Lrd will ccupy the temple and reign frever, as Mses says in v.18 Mses sng speaks f Gd s wrk in the Exdus, but he uses that stry t draw a picture t the wrk f Gd in the time f Tribulatin This methd f drawing prphetic pictures is cnsistent with Hebrew petry in general Just as petry invlves pairs f statements that ech the same thught in different but cmplimentary ways S des prphecy ften pair tgether a near term event with a far term event The earlier event pictures the later event And by understanding the earlier, we cme t understand what will happen in the future Finally, I mentined that Miriam s prphecy added an intriguing detail t this prphetic picture She says that the Lrd hurled the hrse and rider int the sea We understand hw this statement is cnnected t Exdus, bviusly Pharah s hrsemen were cnsumed by the Red Sea 2012 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Exdus f 18 But curiusly, her statement is spken in the singular A rider and a hrse is thrwn int the sea The use f the singular gives us the clue t understand hw this statement is bth speaking f Egypt and prphetically speaking f the last days In Revelatin 6, the arrival f the antichrist at the start f Tribulatin is described this way Rev. 6:1 Then I saw when the Lamb brke ne f the seven seals, and I heard ne f the fur living creatures saying as with a vice f thunder, Cme. Rev. 6:2 I lked, and behld, a white hrse, and he wh sat n it had a bw; and a crwn was given t him, and he went ut cnquering and t cnquer. The man riding this hrse in Revelatin 6 is the antichrist, depicted as arriving t cnquer the wrld At the end f Tribulatin, he is defeated by Gd, in the last minute, just as the antichrist is abut t crush Israel in Jerusalem Like the Exdus, the the Lrd prvides Israel an escape westward away frm the advance f the enemy As Israel fees, the enemy advances And the Lrd fights the battle fr Israel, saving them at the last minute Zech. 14:1 Behld, a day is cming fr the LORD when the spil taken frm yu will be divided amng yu. Zech. 14:2 Fr I will gather all the natins against Jerusalem t battle, and the city will be captured, the huses plundered, the wmen ravished and half f the city exiled, but the rest f the peple will nt be cut ff frm the city. Zech. 14:3 Then the LORD will g frth and fight against thse natins, as when He fights n a day f battle. Zech. 14:4 In that day His feet will stand n the Munt f Olives, which is in frnt f Jerusalem n the east; and the Munt f Olives will be split in its middle frm east t west by a very large valley, s that half f the muntain will mve tward the nrth and the ther half tward the suth. Zech. 14:5 Yu will flee by the valley f My muntains, fr the valley f the muntains will reach t Azel; yes, yu will flee just as yu fled befre the earthquake in the days f Uzziah king f Judah. Then the LORD, my Gd, will cme, and all the hly nes with Him! 2012 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Exdus f 18 Zech. 14:6 In that day there will be n light; the luminaries will dwindle. Zech. 14:7 Fr it will be a unique day which is knwn t the LORD, neither day nr night, but it will cme abut that at evening time there will be light. Zech. 14:8 And in that day living waters will flw ut f Jerusalem, half f them tward the eastern sea and the ther half tward the western sea; it will be in summer as well as in winter. Zech. 14:9 And the LORD will be king ver all the earth; in that day the LORD will be the nly ne, and His name the nly ne. Miriam says this rider and hrse will be hurled int the sea The wrd fr hurled is literally the wrd cast, as in cast int the sea And the sea is a cmmn metaphr in the Bible fr the depths f hell r Gd s judgment S Miriam s sng describes bth the riders f Exdus while als picturing the antichrist meeting his judgment in Tribulatin This is why the final judgments f Tribulatin are prefaced in Revelatin with this statement Rev. 15:1 Then I saw anther sign in heaven, great and marvelus, seven angels wh had seven plagues, which are the last, because in them the wrath f Gd is finished. Rev. 15:2 And I saw smething like a sea f glass mixed with fire, and thse wh had been victrius ver the beast and his image and the number f his name, standing n the sea f glass, hlding harps f Gd. Rev. 15:3 And they sang the sng f Mses, the bnd-servant f Gd, and the sng f the Lamb, saying... Befre we leave the sng, I want t shw smething even mre interesting in these accunts In the stry f Exdus, we nted that Gd made clear He was judging nt nly the peple f Egypt, but als the Egyptian gds Each plague was designed t assault a gd and render it imptent befre the eyes f the peple We als nted that Gd changed the calendar 180 degrees t reflect that Gd s ways f redemptin are the ppsite f man s ways 2012 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Exdus f 18 While man weighs his deeds expecting t get credit fr gd wrks Gd cares nthing fr wrks fr the sake f redemptin, and instead prvides a sacrificial Lamb fr men Finally, in the sngs f the crssing f the Red Sea, nce final pagan myth is destryed The cult f Baal was the basis fr all Canaanite religin Baal is the gd f Canaan and his name means Lrd The Hebrews always cnsidered Baal t be the false gd f this wrld, that is Satan The NT uses Beelzebub meaning Lrd f the flies as a term fr Satan The Canaanite religin had a false mythlgy f creatin centered n the false gd Baal Their creatin myth begins with Baal and anther character called Yamm (which is a wrd meaning sea) in cnflict and struggle Yamm r sea was a frce f cnfusin r frmless chas While Baal was a frce f rder, and Baal was threatened by Yamm Baal cnquers Yamm thereby setting the rest f creatin int mtin Having cnquered Yamm, Baal sets up a kingdm and and a palace and he begins t reign ver the wrld, accrding t the Canaanite myth Thrughut the lands Israel sjurned, this stry was as central t the pagan understanding f creatin As cmmn as the myth f evlutin is tday, this myth was accepted and understd equally widely then And we can recgnize Satan s cunterfeit tactics in this myth, which he brught t the Canaanite peples He declares himself t be the gd f rder, while the frmless deep f Gd s creatin was his enemy 2012 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Exdus f 18 He cnquered the creatin and began t reign ver it, which references the fall in the Garden S hw des this relate t the sngs f Mses and Miriam? This accunt reads like the Canaanite creatin myth nly in reverse If we were t read this sng in Hebrew, we wuld be struck by tw things First, the wrd in Hebrew fr sea is yam S thrughut the narrative, the pet explains t the reader that the sea is cnquering Gd s enemies The sea destrys the armies ppsed t Gd The sea destrys the antichrist in a future day Secndly, the cncluding statement in v.18 says that the Lrd will reign In Hebrew this is Yahweh malakh In the Canaanite religin, the celebratry statement f Baal as he cnquers Yamm was Baal malakh While the stry f Exdus is first abut Israel leaving slavery, it is als a creatin stry in that it explains the creatin f Israel as a natin The sng f Mses is written in such a way that it testifies t the superirity f Gd s creatin in cntrast t the creatin myth f Satan Thugh the cnnectin may nt be readily apparent t us, the cnstructin f this pem and the carefully chsen wrds in Hebrew create that cnnectin The Gd f Israel is the Creatr and has pwer ver all creatin Baal didn t destry Yamm; Yamm will destry Baal Since the sng f Mses intrduces us t the way the Exdus stry is a creatin accunt f srts, it leads us t see the fllwing pattern In the first creatin stry, the wrld was created, being frmed ut f water 2012 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Exdus f 18 In the Exdus stry, the natin f Israel is created, brn ut f the water f the Red Sea The Red Sea is widely understd t be a baptism f the natin as a whle (nt f each individual in the natin) In ur persnal redemptin by faith, we are made new creatures in Christ having been brn again thrugh the baptism f spirit and water And in the final days, the natin f Israel is brn again in faith, residing in the kingdm with rivers f flwing water Each f these mments is a triumph f Gd ver Satan and his frces Further supprting the creatin mtif is the cnnectin f each creatin t the Sabbath After the six days f creatin, Gd rested After the Exdus, Gd will cmmand Israel t rest fr ne day each week After ur persnal salvatin, we cme t rest in ur Sabbath, Christ, perpetually After the natin f Israel is saved, the wrld enters int eternal rest in the kingdm Each Sabbath is greater than the ne that preceded it We will lk at the issue f the Sabbath in much greater detail in future chapters S t summarize the Sngs f Mses and Miriam Mses and Miriam spke as prphets They declared the mighty wrks f Gd in Egypt and in times t cme They testified t Gd s defense f Israel in Egypt and Gd s defense f Israel in Tribulatin They spke f Pharah s defeat in the Red Sea and the antichrist s eventual defeat at Christ s return t rule 2012 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Exdus f 18 Furthermre, the petry was cnstructed carefully t invite cmparisns t Canaanite creatin mythlgy And with that cmparisn, we see a pattern linking several creatin mments We will have mre t say abut these symblic cnnectins in the future, but fr nw let s finish the chapter Ex. 15:22 Then Mses led Israel frm the Red Sea, and they went ut int the wilderness f Shur; and they went three days in the wilderness and fund n water. Ex. 15:23 When they came t Marah, they culd nt drink the waters f Marah, fr they were bitter; therefre it was named Marah. Ex. 15:24 S the peple grumbled at Mses, saying, What shall we drink? Ex. 15:25 Then he cried ut t the LORD, and the LORD shwed him a tree; and he threw it int the waters, and the waters became sweet. There He made fr them a statute and regulatin, and there He tested them. Ex. 15:26 And He said, If yu will give earnest heed t the vice f the LORD yur Gd, and d what is right in His sight, and give ear t His cmmandments, and keep all His statutes, I will put nne f the diseases n yu which I have put n the Egyptians; fr I, the LORD, am yur healer. After the crssing, the began t travel westward int the land f Midian After three days f travel, they had yet t find water This isn t surprising The regin gets less than an inch f rain per year At abut this pint, they reach a surce f water, but the water was bitter and undrinkable The bitterness indicates ful and likely pisnus water The placed is called Marah, which means bitter S the peple begin t grumble asking what shall they drink? It s remarkable that the natin wuld find cause t grumble s sn after the crssing Here we see a spiritual truth playing ut Even after witnessing great signs and wnders, the peple are still hard hearted and unable t trust in Gd 2012 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Exdus f 18 The mind can be influenced by what we see and experience, but the heart (the spirit) cannt Mses asks Gd fr relief, and Gd gives Mses a slutin Thrw a tree int the water and it will becme drinkable And with that slutin, cmes a new statute and regulatin and a test fr the peple f Israel These things are cming upn the natin because they are sinning s readily after having seen the Lrd deliver them With that sin cmes rules and regulatins and tests This is merely a fretaste f the Law t cme Gd directs that if the natin wuld heed his vice and d what is right and keep all his statues and cmmandments, they will nt receive the Lrd s judgments By extensin, if Israel des anything ther than bey, they will experience Gd s judgment Gd says He is the healer f Israel, meaning Gd can turn bitter water t sweet Ultimately, this requirement is repeated in the Law itself This ends the third sectin f the bk and sets up a new theme that runs thrugh the rest f Exdus and thrugh the remaining bks f Mses The natin that left Egypt is unbelieving yet Gd saved them fr His name sake Their unbelief is a cause fr them t test Gd ten times T shw them their unbelief and sin and t cause them t seek after Him, the Lrd gives the natin laws and statues They fail in keeping these laws, necessitating Gd s judgment We will begin chapter 16 next time with the final verse f chapter Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.
