LOOK FOR PATTERNS IN THE DOCUMENTS BELOW TO IDENTIFY ONE MAIN ANTI- SEMITIC ARGUMENT USED BY THE NAZIS DOCUMENT ONE This is a page from the book Der Giftpilz, the German word for toadstool. It was aimed particularly at kids, and was used in schools. The God of the Jews is money. To earn money he is committing the biggest crimes. He will not stop until he is sitting on a big money bag, until he has become the king of money.
DOCUMENT TWO Background: The Nazis were always worried about those Germans who did not accept anti- Semitism. In this article from the party monthly for propagandists, the writer provides ten responses to the most common objections they encountered to Nazi anti- Semitic measures. These were arguments intended for everyday use in conversation with fellow citizens. The source: Kurt Hilmar Eitzen, Zehn Knüppel wider die Judenknechte, Unser Wille und Weg (6) 1936, pp Ten Responses to Jewish Lackeys by Kurt Hilmar Eitzen Argument 3: The Jew has better prices than the German businessman. Counterargument: Any crook can sell junk. Jewish crooks have driven thousands of German businessmen to bankruptcy with the glittering trash in their department store palaces. When someone does get good products more cheaply from the Jews than from Germans, it is only because the united Jewish firms force down prices from the manufacturers, which means reducing workers wages. He who has bought good products cheaply from the Jew should never forget that the curse of a German worker and the tears of his hungry children come with them!
DOCUMENT THREE Title: The worm Caption: Where something is rotten, the Jew is the cause. Explanation: The names in the background are those of Jews involved in major financial scandals. The apple is named the German economy. The worm is named Jewish scandals. (November 1931)
DOCUMENT FOUR Background: Hitler wrote Mein Kampf ( My Struggle ) while in prison. It was published in In it he outlines his political ideology and vision for Germany s future. In untiring agitation, the agents of the Jewish- international stock exchange and loan capital are trying to make Germany ripe for collapse, so that they may pass over State and economy into the hands of the International Finance Trusts. The presumption for this is the laceration and, with it, the weakening of our people in the interior. Hence also the embittered fight of the MERCENARIES of international high finance The activity of the so- called liberal press was the work of gravediggers for the German people and the German Reich. One can pass by in silence the Marxist papers of lies; to them lying is as necessary to their life as catching mice is to the cat; but its task is only to break the people's folkish and national spine, in order to make it ripe for the yoke of slavery of international capital and its masters, the Jews Jewish finance desires not only the thorough economic smashing of Germany, but also its complete political enslavement If our people and our State fall victims to this bloodthirsty and money- thirsty Jewish tyrant over nations, then the whole world will fall into this polyp's net; if Germany frees itself from this embrace, this greatest of all dangers to the nations can be regarded as crushed for the entire world.
DOCUMENT FIVE Background: This pamphlet was apparently widely used in the schools. It is a German Catechism for the instruction of young Germans. It goes through the 25 program points of the Nazi Party, and introduces the leaders of the party as well. The section translated below is on race. The source: Werner May, Deutscher National-Katechismus 2nd edition (Breslau: Verlag von Heinrich Handel, 1934), pp The German National Catechism 3. Of Race and People (Volk) What is a race?
A group of living creatures is a race when its individual members share the same appearance and genetic inheritance. What do I understand under appearance and genetic inheritance? Physical characteristics that are passed along: the color of the skin, the shape of the skull, and particularly facial features (shape of the nose, mouth, lips), etc. What are the major races? White, black, and yellow. To which race do Europe s peoples belong? The peoples of Europe do not belong to a particular race, but are rather a racial mixture. Our German people is comprised primarily of six races. And what are they? The Nordic, the Pfalzish (fälische), the Western (westliche) the East Baltic (ostbaltische), the Ostic (ostische), and the Dinarish (dinarische) races. How can one tell that peoples are racially related? First, from their languages, in which many words are the same or similar. For example: Greek Latin German French English patér pater Vater père father méter Mäter Mutter mère mother egó ego ich je I A racial relationship is also evident in the same or similar cultural products, sagas, legends and customs. What were and are the particular characteristics of the Nordic race?
Courage, bravery, creative ability and desire, loyalty. The German people is, along with the English, Danish, Norwegian, and Swedish, the most racially pure of the European peoples. With regards to the purity of language, the Scandinavian peoples are in first place. Its Gothic script is particularly lovely, and it should be maintained. Which race must the National Socialist race fight against? The Jewish race. Why? The goal of the Jew is to make himself the ruler of humanity. Wherever he comes, he destroys works of culture. He is not a creative spirit, rather a destructive spirit. How is that evident? The work of Aryan peoples shows a true creative spirit. The Jew is mostly a merchant, as he was for millennia in the past. There are no Jewish construction workers in Germany, no smiths, no Jewish miners or seamen. Nearly all major inventions were made by Aryans. How has the Jew subjugated the peoples? With money. He lent them money and made them pay interest. Thousands and thousands of Germans have been made wretched by the Jews and been reduced to poverty. Farmers whose land had been in the family for more than 100 years were driven from their land because they could not pay the interest. What happened to those farmers? They had to move to the cities. Torn from the land to which they belonged, robbed of their labor that gave their lives purpose and meaning, they fell victim to poverty and misery. Worn down, their souls crushed, they accepted Jewish doctrines that denied the Fatherland and opposed all that was nationalistic. Their strength and ability faded. The Jew had reached his goal.

The System tolerates that foreign Jews live in elegant villas while those severely injured during the war are thrown out on the streets
The System tolerates that department store Jews exploit the people, while small shopkeepers, whose businesses have often lasted for generations, are ruined.
DOCUMENT SEVEN Background: The following essay was published in Der Angriff, 10 December 1928, during the Christmas shopping season. Goebbels satirically suggests that Germans should only buy from the Jews. The title is a takeoff on a common Nazi slogan: Germans: Don t buy from the Jew! The source: Deutsche, kauft nur bei Juden! Der Angriff. Aufsätze aus der Kampfzeit (Munich: Zentralverlag der NSDAP., 1935), pp Germans, Buy only from the Jew! by Joseph Goebbels Why? Because the Jew sells cheap, but shoddy merchandise, whereas the German sets a proper price for good merchandise. Because the Jew cheats you, whereas the German treats you fairly and honestly. Because you can buy all sorts of trash from the Jew, but the German sells mostly only quality goods. The Jew is your blood brother, the German the enemy of your people. The Jew provides for you by the sweat of his brow, the German is a lazy good- for- nothing. The Jew stood alongside you at the front for four years, shoulder to shoulder, and risked his life for Germany s fame and greatness, but the German skulked about in the rear echelon. The Jew died so that Germany could live. Where can you find a Jew who did not lose everything he had in the war and revolution, and where a German who did not grow rich and arrogant? Isn t it true that the German nailed Jesus to the cross and the Jew transformed his teaching of love into reality? Buy only in Jewish department stores. What does the small German merchant matter to you? He should go to Palestine and sell his wares there. He does not belong with us in Germany! We are tired of this constant chattering about dying small businesses. It is so comfortable and cozy in the Jewish department store. Every kind of cheap trash is available. Such palaces are found on every street corner. Their lights shine in the dark night, the Christmas trees sparkle in the show windows, the angels swing over a sea of Kitsch, the children laugh and clap their hands, and the benevolent Jewish merchant stands in the background rubbing his hands with glee. Where can you find such a generous and energetic German merchant? What do you mean by saying that the German also wants to make a living? Why? Who does he think he is? He should go on relief like the rest of us. Why should some Germans have it better than the rest of us? That after all is the right of the Jews in Germany. Why do we have a republic if not to benefit the Jews? Six hundred small businesses have gone bankrupt due to Jewish department stores this Christmas season in Berlin alone! Are there still that many Germans around? Quiet by next year there will be fewer. There is not much left to go bankrupt in Germany any longer. That is how it should be. Germany for the Jews! That is what we fought and bled for. We ll spend our last penny to that end. Set out the Christmas tree. Daughters of Zion, rejoice! The good Germans are forging their own chains from their hard- earned coins. The Jewish financier will use them to impose eternal slavery on Germans. Who would not want to help advance world Jewry s great benevolent work? Why do we have a neck, if not to bear a yoke? Germany has been for sale for ten years. Who does not want to help? Does anyone ask if the toy under the Christmas tree came from the Jew Tietz or the German Müller? The Jew will grow fat from the coins you give him, the German will starve. So what? Let the light shine on the Jews, let the Germans dwell in darkness. That is what the Lord of the Jews wants, as does his lackey Finance Minister
Hilferding. Property is theft, as long as it does not belong to the Jew. Not a penny for the nobility, everything for the bank and stock exchange and department store swindlers! Christmas is the festival of love. Why should we not love the poor Jews, even make them fat? Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you! When was the Jew not our enemy? When did he not hate and persecute and slander and spit on us? Who would be inhuman enough to demand that we should treat him according to the law he applies to us: An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth? The child whose birthday we will soon celebrate came into the world to bring love. But Christ the man learned that one cannot always get by with love. When he saw the Jewish moneychangers in the temple, he took a whip and drove them out of the temple. Germans, buy only from Jews! Let your fellow citizens starve, and go to the Jewish department stores, especially at Christmas. The greater the injustice you do to your own people, the sooner the day will come when a man comes to take up the whip and drive the moneychangers
