1 Eternal Light Volume 75, Issue 6 MARCH 2017 Passover Seder Thursday, April 11th Thursday, April 27th Youth Shabbat & Confirmation Sunday, May 5th Sunday, May 7th OUR HOLOCAUST TORAH On April 24 th, Yom HaShoah or Holocaust Memorial Day will be observed worldwide. Each year, we remember those who perished at the hands of the Nazis and we honor them by saying Kaddish in their memory. This year, we have an opportunity to do something a little different. But before I tell you what, I want to direct your attention to one of our Torah scrolls. Many of you know that the Torah that stands in the middle of our five Torahs in the sanctuary ark is a Holocaust Torah. Just what is the story of this Torah? When the Munich Agreement was signed on September 29, 1938, Britain and France agreed to Hitler s demand to annex the German speaking border regions of Chechoslovakia, and the Germans marched in. The Jews from dozens of congregations in the prosperous industrial and commercial towns in the Sudetenland had between 3 and 10 days to flee to the interior of the country, which was still a free and sovereign country. They left behind their synagogues which were burned, vandalized and looted. In almost every case the ritual treasures were destroyed or lost. In the remainder of Czechoslovakia, which included Prague, the synagogues and their swollen congregations were safe for the time being. Deportation began in 1941 and the mass deportations of Jews took place throughout 1942 and into early Fearful that the deserted synagogues and community buildings would be at the mercy of looters and plunderers, a group of Jews at the Jewish museum in occupied Prague submitted a plan to the Nazis to save the Jewish ritual and cultural treasures by bringing them to the museum so they could be catalogued and preserved. Why the Nazis accepted the plan is not known. Over 100,000 items were collected and then stored in over forty warehouses. The Jews who were undertaking this work were suddenly deported to the Terezin death camp. (continued on page 2)

2 OUR HOLOCAUST TORAH (continued from page 1) Not long after the defeat of Germany, the Communists took over the government of Czechoslovakia in The Prague Jewish Museum came under government control and the Torah scrolls came under public ownership. The State Jewish Museum put on an exhibition of the collected Judaica. To make a long story short, Eric Estorick, an American art dealer living in London, visited the Michle Synagogue in Prague where he found 1,800 scrolls in seriously damp conditions. On his return to London, he contacted Rabbi Harold Reinhart of Westminster Synagogue, (who had served as the rabbi of our congregation prior to the war) who convinced one of his congregants, Ralph Yablon, to put up the money to buy the scrolls. Estorick negotiated a deal and two trucks with 1,564 scrolls were delivered to Westminster Synagogue in March of These scrolls were then distributed worldwide with the aim of getting the scrolls back in the life of Jewish congregations. Congregation B nai Israel received its Holocaust Torah 50 years ago in January of The Torah was the proud possession of the synagogue in Kutna Hora which had 211 Jews. All 211 of them were deported to Terezin in June of The synagogue has since been converted to a Hussite Church. In order to commemorate Yom HaShoah this year, we will bless our Holocaust Torah as a congregation at Friday night Shabbat Services on April 28 th at 6 pm. Please join us as we honor the community of Kutna Hora and read from their Torah scroll 50 years after we received it. 3 President s Message by Jay Jalenak Celebrate and bid recklessly On April 27, we have our second Art & Soul fundraiser. If you were not at the first Art & Soul in 2015, then you may not know the fantastic event which you missed. The music was entertaining, the food was impeccable, the drinks were wonderful, and the auction was spirited. The 2015 event was a tremendous success, and everyone had abundant fun while supporting the synagogue. Also, if you missed the 2015 event, let me try to lay on some Jewish-motherly guilt: Shame Shame Shame! (my mother certainly knew the value of those words long before they became popular on Game of Thrones.). We all appreciate our Congregation, but we do not always value our Congregation until we have a life cycle event or need seats for the Holy Days. We have a beautiful synagogue with a caring and dedicated staff. Our children are receiving an unparalleled education in Jewish values and traditions. Therefore, our Art & Soul Committee has worked tirelessly to create a fundraiser which provides crucial support for our Congregation through a thoroughly enjoyable not to be missed party. Thus ends the guilt-portion of this message. While this party supports the Congregation, this is a party to be enjoyed by all. You do not need to be a CBI member to enjoy the jazz, the food or the numerous auction items. So, bring your non-congregational friends. Better yet, sell tickets to those friends. You should also register for the auction, view the must-have auction items, and start the bidding. The Committee has scoured the city and received many fine items and experiences of varying price ranges. There is something for everyone. It is a great opportunity to pick up a something special for a graduate, a b nai mitzvah, a baby shower, a wedding, Mother s Day or Father s Day. As for the bidding, I encourage you bid with reckless abandon. Conquer all foes and do not let anyone outbid you. Certainly, you could take home a gift certificate for a favorite restaurant for a bargain and pay only part of its value. On the other hand, since you are going to eat there anyway, do not be afraid to steal it away from other competitors by paying more than its value. Remember you are supporting our Congregational home. You will be a mensch and make your Jewish mother proud. I look forward to partying and celebrating with everyone on April 27.

9 Adar Nisan Page 9 Thank you to everyone who contributed or volunteered at our 18th annual Congregation B nai Israel Magical Mitzvah Day! We made the magic happen when approximately 60 people of all ages came together on Sunday, March 5 to make a difference in our Baton Rouge community. The enthusiastic members of the Magical Mensch Mania team assembled 50 toiletry bags for the men of St. Vincent DePaul, 50 toiletry bags for the Battered Women s Shelter. Each backpack/bag included: a washcloth, shampoo, conditioner, lotion, and a toothbrush and toothpaste (generously donated by Dr. Robin Levy). In addition 100 snack bags for the homeless at St. Vincent de Paul were assembled and delivered. Operation Shoebox created beautiful notes and attached patriotic candy to each one. They placed each note in one of the exquisite skullcaps, that members of CBI had knitted all year long, for the United States overseas military. Our Canines & Commandments made 5 dozen dog treats and put them in decorative containers, made 68 chew ropes from old t-shirts, and donated supplies to Cara s House in Prairieville, an animal shelter destroyed in the August floods. L dor Vador and More baked hamentashen and assembled mishloach manot baskets for the residents at St. James Place. The B nai Buddies made CBI shine by power-washing the playground, Gaga Pit, the front entrance, and the parking signs. The rain didn t stop them from picking weeds and the Choir Loft was cleaned and organized Men s Club President, Nathan Levy, led a tremendous crew of Neshamah Noshers, who brought enthusiasm to the lunch preparation and fed everyone with a delicious meal of kosher jambalaya, salad, bread, and cookies. Finally, our President, Jay Jalenak, brought delicious rum cake to complete a terrific day! What a special day of giving and growing as a community! We are so appreciative of every volunteer and for the monetary and non-monetary donations that made it possible to provide materials needed for our Magical Mitzvah Day projects. 19 Adar Nisan Page 19 Please Join Us As Emily Berg Becomes a Bat Mitzvah Saturday, April 22, at 10 am Emily Berg will lead the service with Rabbi Jordan at 7pm, on Friday April 21, 2017 Oneg to Follow Emily is in the 7 th grade at Episcopal. Emily enjoys dance class at Powell Moise, art, drawing, reading, baking, and spending time with friends and family. She has two English Mastiffs named Bella and Jewel, whom she loves lounging on and playing with. She has two younger brothers, Jacob (10) and Lee (6), and she is a wonderful big sister and second mom to them. Emily s Mitzvah project is to raise awareness and funds/diapers for the Junior League of Baton Rouge s Diaper Cooperative. Diapers are not covered by WIC or Food Stamps, which makes it difficult for families to afford diapers. One in three families in America struggle to afford the cost of diapers, which is approximately $70 to $80 a month per baby for disposable diapers. In turn, those babies are unable to attend daycare and participate in early childhood education because they cannot meet the diaper requirements to attend. This also affects parents because without childcare, they then cannot go to work. Furthermore, children who stay in soiled diapers longer than appropriate are at higher risk for painful diaper rashes, viral illnesses, and urinary tract infections. 20 Community Page 20 Hope everyone enjoyed a wonderful Purim season. There is a great link between Hadassah and Purim. Our founder, Henrietta Szold, called a meeting during this time of year and it was decided to call their new organization Hadassah, Esther in honor of one of Biblical history s great women. That was more than hundred years ago and although we had adapted to the times our message of a healthy Israel remains the same. Currently, Hadassah has programs that focus on saving lives through research and change in daily routines along with participation in our communities through educational and advocacy events. As our current Hadassah President Ellie Hershkin has stated in addressing the current wave of Anti-semitic acts sweeping our country Modern Hadassah combines the legacy of Queen Esther, the Jewish national liberation movement and the determination of women to become leaders. While the central goal of Zionism was the establishment of a Jewish state, in America it also accelerated the impulse for Jews to involve themselves in public life, to insist on equality for all and to wear their identity proudly. May we continue. Locally, Hadassah Baton Rouge enjoyed a stimulating book discussion hosted by Ellen Bander. We dissected The Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr and gave the book our resounding endorsement. This is a World War II story from a very different perspective and a joy to read.
