Friday, 31st October, 2014 Issue 10/ FROM THE PRINCIPAL S DESK Common Ground Collaborative Over the last few years and following my entry plan last school year, ISH has been investigating a more suitable curriculum model for EC-8. The curriculum design needs to be coherent, innovative and rigorous, suitable for international school students. The Common Ground Collaborative (CGC) is one such curriculum framework where learning is defined, designed, delivered and demonstrated. This model offers an ideal curriculum for the pre- IGCSE and pre-ib Diploma Years. Schools do not do the CGC; it is a flexible framework of learning, developed to meet the learning needs of all our students. ISH will be keeping the best of what we have currently and enriching and developing it with help of the CGC over a period of three years. Please click on the link below to view the brief overview of the CGC. In the CGC framework there are 8 human commonalities that are conceptually framed areas of learning, designed to bring understandings that are of powerful significance for all cultures. Monthly, we will be highlighting a human commonality in the Newsletter and Daily Bulletin. For November, the Human Commonality is: Personal Meaning Learners understand how both personal and social identities are constructed. They understand the role that beliefs and values have played in shaping human societies, can articulate their own beliefs and values and understand where these came from. These understandings support them both in developing a sense of personal purpose and in respecting the beliefs and values of others. Please take time to discuss this with your children Upcoming Events Notice 11th November sees our annual International day where we celebrate our diversity as well as human commonalities. This year we will also be celebrating our Languages as taught and spoken at ISH. This is a big community event and everyone is invited, so mark the day in your calendar. Some parents will be contacting you for support with our taste of the world. More details to follow. Book Fair by Scholastic will be held on November 10 th and 11 th. 1

Coffee on the Green: 30 th October The second Coffee-on-the Green at ISH saw an impressive number of parents assembled bright and early, near the canteen for an informal chat along with coffee and cupcakes. This was followed by a very informative session on Cancer by the Grade 11 IB students and a talk on Well Being and Healthy Lifestyles, by Dr Mohammed Shakeel Ahmed in the library. The IB students' presentation dealt with the causes of cancer, the types of cancer, the treatment and the trauma thereafter. The students had also prepared a lot of posters and charts, which were on display. Their presentation was superbly delivered. Please click on the link to view the Presentation. 4 Dr Ahmed spoke about making the right choices in order to lead a healthy life. He remarked that obesity was one of the biggest problems in the world today, and that it had enormous repercussions on a person's general health. Eating right, staying fit, and sleeping well was the mantra for a long and healthy existence. We thank Dr Ahmed, the IB 1 students, Mrs Vandana Gupta and all the parents for making this session, a meaningful one and a perfect end to Pinktober.
Halloween Celebrations: Spooky Fun at ISH Witches, Superheroes and ghosts ruled the day on Halloween at ISH. The ISH community got into the spirit of things right from the time they got onto their buses in the morning. The whole school gathered for a parade before digging into deliciously spooky cupcakes provided by the PTA. It was also great to see parents getting into the thick of things during this time. Thank you, parents and PTA for your time and participation. After the parade it was time for some more fun as the Elementary got into the party mood. The children had great fun with games like Spooky Skittles and Feed the Monsters, a Haunted House and a tattoo stall managed by the STUCO. Though it was games and fun, it was also about learning during this time. We learnt that if we collaborate, it is always double the fun. The experience of Halloween and the learning continued once the students went back to class. 5
SECONDARY SCHOOL NEWS El día de los muertos Day of the Death, Spanish Grade 7 and 8 Vivek, Eshaan, Keshav, Jehanne, Micalea, Charlote, Alice, Rebeca, Anthea and Louis. Grade 7 and 8 Advanced Spanish 30 th October El Día de los Muertos is celebrated on the 2 nd of November in Mexico, and it is a Christian celebration. It celebrates the dead. An altar is made with three levels: the first one is for the Earth (Tierra) where we offer food, drinks, etc, the second level is named Limbo ; the Limbo is the place you go to when you die. If one is good one goes to paradise and if one is not they go to hell to pay for all the bad things. The third level is heaven (cielo), where one goes if one is good. In the altar you can find many items: Flowers Marigold flowers symbolize death and their strong scent helps guide the dead back to their altars.
Candles: It symbolizes the light against the darkness of Death. The light illuminates the way to the heaven (cielo). Papel picado : they are little paper mats with holes on it to allow spirits to pass through, that is why they are placed in doors and window. Food The dead cannot eat the food but are said to absorb the energy from it. Drinks The dead are said to become thirsty after their journey to the altar and will appreciate drinks when they arrive. Incense The scent also helps guide the dead towards the altar. Salt This represents the continuity of life. Photos of the Deceased These are placed in an important place on the altar. There is a lot of more! Mexicans enjoy this day with their loved ones, there is music and party for the Altar. They celebrate life too on this day! By Vivek, Eshaan, Keshav, Jehanne, Micalea, Charlote, Alice, Anthea, Louis and Rebeca. News from the Secondary Production: Production in progress This year, for the Secondary School Production, we will be performing Merchant of Venice also known as a pound of flesh by William Shakespeare. To begin with, since the group was divided on which play to perform, this was resolved by giving prospective actors the option to vote for either Twelfth Night or Merchant of Venice, and the majority voted for Merchant of Venice. We started working on the play at the beginning of the year. The actors were chosen through a democratic process of auditions, and roles were assigned based on acting skills alone, with no consideration given to gender! There are about 20 students performing in this wonderful play. The main plot of Merchant of Venice revolves around a rich merchant who is willing to risk his life so his young friend can have a chance of winning the girl of his dreams. The plot twists and turns around themes of love and sacrifice. Unlike earlier productions, this year s production has dialogues in Shakespearean English and costumes from the Elizabethan period. The play is scheduled to be performed on November, so we are working very hard and racing against time to get our act together! Contributed by Clara and Anthea of Grade 8. NOTE: There will be a High School Production sleep over on 21st night to continue with the production rehearsals on Saturday. More information on this will follow in the upcoming newsletters. 7
News from the Science Department The vision of science department at ISH is to facilitate the development of students as inquirers, be scientifically literate, caring and responsible individuals who will think critically and creatively when solving problems and making informed decisions about aspects affecting themselves, others and their social and natural environments. Making the topics relevant and current is a major target for the future of Science at ISH. We will achieve this through project work, independent learning and the use of technology and creativity. We want our students to be active participants in the teaching and learning of science. As a step forward Grade 7 and some grade 6 students did a research project on Ebola virus Disease which is the current cause of concern to medical fraternity all over the world. Grade 8 students researched on the reactivity of metals and themselves came up with the reactivity series. A major goal of the department this year shall be to integrate the learning in science with the resources available at ICRISAT which includes lab visits and interaction with the scientists. Our mission is to deliver innovative educational experiences that inspire new passions for science, promote better scientific aptitude, and enhance science education. 8
