Israeli Parsha by Daniel Lotzoff This year we have an uncommon phenomenon, the split of parshiyot Vayakhel and Pekudei, thus enabling us to hone in on parshiyot Vayakhel and Pekudei. These parshiyot talk about a similar topic, the construction of the Mishkan, yet have two contrasting view on how one should approach the Avodah in the Mishkan. Vayakhel is a positive Parsha wherein Moshe gather the whole nation for a collective goal to focus on volunteering, culminating with the excitement to give to as much as they could to the Mishkan, לבו נדבו with all Bnei Yisrael taking part; so much so that they gave too much On the opposite end of the spectrum we have Parshat Pekudei where we see 5 repeated words and everyone giving one half shekel, an exact amount, just as Hashem כאשר ה צווה את משה commanded. These words את צווה ה כאשר משה just as Hashem had commanded Moshe are a clear indication that the Mishkan was built in exact accordance with Hashem s instructions, without any deviation. The Ba al Haturim comments that the phrases את צווה ה כאשר משה and אשר צוה ה ככל which both refer to this precise fulfilment of Hashem s command, are mentioned 18 times in Parshat Pekudei, representative of the eighteen berachot that were instituted for Shemonah Esrei. What is the correlation between these two concepts? The connection between the total observance of Hashem s instructions in the Mishkan and the Shemonah Esrei is based upon the person who contracted the Mishkan Betzalel. The Torah testifies that Hashem filled Betzalel with a spirit of Hashem, with wisdom, with insight, with knowledge, and with an understanding of every manner of craftsmanship. Furthermore, Gemara Berachot מה עמוד א,דף explains that Betzalel knew how to combine the sacred letters with which heaven and earth were created. With such artistic talents and the ability to create the greatest masterpieces the world would ever see, one can only imagine the ingenious and artistic pieces that Betzalel could come up with on his own accord. However, notwithstanding his own talent, he remained steadfast to fulfil the will of Hashem; down to every minute detail. Perhaps this is the message that the Baal Haturim is highlighting. Even Betzalel, who possessed the greatest creative innovation in the world, did not use it for a selfish reason, rather he used his ability to fulfil the will of Hashem, exactly as he was commanded to. But at the same time, we feel somewhat disconnected to parts of the Shemonah Esrei, and adding our own, updated sections would bring us closer to Hashem, we also feel that we have more to donate than the standard machatzit hashekel, and could make a more meaningful donation to the Mishkan and a stronger connection to Hashem. Nonetheless, we should realise that just as Betzalel did everything exactly as Hashem commanded him, without any deviation, and try not to input any creativity for our tzedakkah, as we are certainly not more creative than Hashem intends us to be, whose will it was for us to have the exact wording of Shemonah Esrei and for us to donate exactly half a shekel to the Mishkan. This message is reverberated by Rav Shimshon Refael Hirsh who maintains that when we carry out the will of Hashem, on our own accord without adding nor subtracting from it, we are characterized as ה עובדי Servants of Hashem Shabbat Shalom!

Pekudei 2 Adar II 5776 March 12th, 2016 Issue 642 Mazal Tov to Rav Avichai Appel (Moscow ) on his appointment as Rabbi of Frankfurt, Germany! Rav Shmuel Elikan Participant in the Selwyn and Ros Smith Manhigut Toranit Program at Eretz Hemdah Be Clean In Parashat Pekudei, which ends Sefer Shmot, Moshe counts the silver and the copper received as donations to the Mishkan, and we're given a specific account of what each material was used for; the word Pekudei means account, or sum. It s interesting to note, that contrary to the silver and copper, the Torah doesn't give us an account of what the gold donations were used for. This disturbed several of the commentators. Rav Yehonathan Eybeshütz ( ) suggests that while the silver was a mandatory donation given by the entire population, and the copper was the donation of the poor and therefore they both require a receipt the gold was given by the wealthy, and they didn't need any receipt or acknowledgement. Nevertheless, our Sages taught us: "One must look clean in the eyes of others, just as one must look clean in the eyes of G-d. Who do we learn this from? We learn it from Moshe himself, of

whom G-d said 'He is most trustworthy within My entire house', and yet, he made sure to look clean in the eyes of the People. For when the Mishkan's work was concluded, he reported to them: 'this is the account of the donations to the Mishkan'" [Midrash from a manuscript found in the Geniza and cited in Rav Kasher's Torah Shelema vol. 23, n. 14, pg. 55]. It was accordingly ruled in the Shulchan Aruch [Yoreh De'ah 257] that charity collectors must give an exact fiscal report, so as to be "clean" both in the eyes of men, as in the eyes of G-d. Rav Yoël Sirkis (Poland ), the Bach commented [ibid] that there is no source for this ruling, and that maybe it was deduced from Moshe's behavior, as mentioned above. But if Moshe was so famously honest, as G-d Himself testified, and as the People surely knew - a fact our Sages mentioned in the Talmud of Jerusalem (Sanhedrin 1,4) - why does he need to give the People a monetary report? The Poskim differ on whether the requirement to be seen as "clean" is ordained by the Torah [de'orayta] or by our sages [de'rabanan] (cf. Iggrot Moshe O.H. vol. IV, 82) but they all agree that distancing oneself from any suspicion is both an halachic obligation as well as an ethical requirement. One is obligated to avoid a situation in which one's fellow might suspect him of anything This sounds really far-fetched! Why should someone be held responsible for his fellow's thoughts?! And what exactly is expected in upholding this requirement? The Divrei Malkiel (Rav Tannenbaum's ( ) responsa, vol. IV, 61) writes that a person is only responsible for damages resulting from his changing something [e.g. running in the public domain, as opposed to walking normally, see Baba Kama 32]; likewise, when Reuven's behavior causes Shimon to suspect Reuven of any wrongdoing, it's considered a diversion from normalcy which can be held against Reuven! In certain ways, one who causes his fellow to sin [like here, where Reuven caused Shimon to suspect Reuven of sinning, which is in itself a sin] is worse than killing one's fellow. And so, if one behaves normally without any alteration, one cannot be held responsible for other's suspecting him for no reason. Going back to Moshe, apparently there was no obligation for him to give the People a monetary report at the conclusion of the Mishkan's work, as he did not divert from normal behavior in any way, shape or form. Still, Moshe decided to "err on the safe side" by being extra careful and reducing the chances of any suspicion of theft against him. The Brisker Rav (Beit HaLevy, Shemot 31) emphasizes this, saying that almost every single paragraph in Parashat Pekudei ends with the words: "Just as G-d has commanded Moshe". From here we can see that the whole monetary report was an act of piety and there was according to the halakha no need for it. So, the question is, after all, is there any reason Moshe gave this report other

than as an act of piety? Rav Yitzchak Weiss (2nd Spinka Rebbe, ) suggested that the reason the People demanded a fiscal report from Moshe was not due to their suspicion. Rather, they wanted to show how excited they were to partake in this special mitzvah, and accordingly wished to receive some form of guarantee that all their donations were indeed used only for their original purpose. He juxtaposes this with the Golden Calf, where the People didn t demand any fiscal report from Aharon, because deep down inside they knew that their money was going to waste But here, the silver and the copper are "eternal" (cf. Sforno 38,21), and the request for a report came from a pure heart, from a will to check that everything was used for holy purposes. TMT Spotlight: Yoav visits Kollelim and RZOA Seminar in Australia This week Yoav Cohen-Hadad, Head of the Shlichut Department in Torah MiTzion, visited our Australian Kollels - Melbourne, Sydney and Perth. His first stop was Melbourne where he experienced first hand the important work the Kollel does for the school, Leibler Yavneh College, and the community at large. Yoav had the opportunity to work and meet with Rosh Kollel Rabbi Danny Mirvis, bachurim Ariel Asper, Chagai Feigenbaum, Ori Markovitch and Elron Bandel, and Shlicha Sara Landau. Next, Yoav traveled to the Kollel in Sydney, led by Shlichim Rabbi Shua and Michal Solomon and the bachurim Avichai Guberman, Matan Rosenberg, Elyashiv Himelstein, Avichay Dekel and Omer Hagbi. In

Sydney, Yoav joined all the Australian Shlichim in the Religious Zionists of Australia (RZOA) Seminar. Each year the RZOA Seminar is held in Australia for key leaders and shlichim of the Jewish communities in Melbourne, Sydney and Perth. The conference is an excellent opportunity to think together and share ideas. Torah MiTzion Shlichim, together with Bnei Akiva shlichim and Sherut Leumi girls, attended various shiurim and sessions, and were filled with new energy towards the second half of their year. Thank you to Rabbi Shua Solomon for organizing the Shabbaton and accommodation in Sydney. It was excellent! Yoav ended his trip with a visit to our Kollel in Perth, where he saw the amazing work of the entire Tzevet Perth, which includes the Bnot Sherut and Torah MiTzion bachurim Yonatan Bonfil and Dovi Zwebner.

ISRAtag Arik Speaker In cooperation with: 'Lilmod' Coordinator and Head of European Desk in Torah MiTzion The Baha'i Gardens are among the most popular sites in Israel, with about half a million visitors a year. Everyone knows the gardens in Haifa but many are not aware that there are also gardens in Akko-Acre (image taken from last week). In July 2008, the Bahá'í Gardens in Haifa and Acre were included in the list of World Heritage Sites by the UNESCO. The parks are actually only the external part of the Temple sacred for Bahai religion. The roots of the Baha'i religion is in Shiite Islam. At the beginning of the 19th century, Sayyid Ali Muhammad a Persian merchant, declared himself as the expected Hidden Imam - Mahdi which the Shiites are awaiting and called himself the Bab (gate). He eventually created a separate religion from Islam. Persecuted in Islamic countries, the Baha'i Faith eventually founded its center in Israel. The founder of the religion was executed and his remains were crushed but his followers retained the remnants, which were buried in the temple of Acre.

The religion's world center in Haifa was set on Mount Carmel, which was seen by the founder of the religion as sacred because he recognized it as Mount Zion "to which all the nations will come to the end of days". Today the Bahai religion worldwide counts between 6 and 7 million followers. There is an interesting Halachic discussion about whether one is allowed to enter the Baha'i Gardens. Traditionally, the chief rabbis of Haifa allowed the entrance exclusively to the gardens. Others prohibited it, claiming it is considered deriving pleasure from idolatry. Yasher Koach to Sonia Slonim for providing the correct answer Where was this photo taken? Please send answers to - arik@torahmitzion.org The answer, further information about this location, as well as the first person to recognize this site will be published in next week's edition.

Torah MiTzion was established in 1995 with the goal of strengthening Jewish communities around the globe and infusing them with the love for Torah, the Jewish People and the State of Israel. Over the past twenty years Torah MiTzion's shlichim have inspired and enriched their host communities through a wide range of high impact formal and informal educational programs.
