1 Volume 43 Number 9 June/July 2013 Sivan/Tammuz/Av 5773 From the Rabbi s Desk As I write this message, it already seems that the summer is upon us. The weather has warmed up considerably and many more people are walking, running, bicycling along the lakefront. The leaves on the trees have gone from small buds to full leaf and the tulips have bloomed. Our garden is definitely in a growth phase as the seeds that we started in February are now sturdy seedlings ready for planting. As we move into the summer, it is now the season for me to take leave of this extraordinary community and to be planted in another garden, another community. While things are still in process and I cannot share with you yet what is next, I know that I take some of the rich soil of KAM Isaiah Israel with my roots. I take with me the blessings of my friends and congregants who have touched me deeply. I have been honored to serve this synagogue over these last four years and I know that Rabbi Fred Reeves will serve you well as he is planted in this garden at the beginning of July. Meanwhile, plans are underway to wish me well on June 14. We will have the first barbecue of the summer at 6:30 pm, followed by Shabbat services at 7:30 pm, with an ice cream social oneg Shabbat to end the evening. Thank you for the honor of being your rabbi these last four years. I wish you kol tuv/ all the best. Rabbi Batsheva Appel

2 President s Report From our outgoing president: Dear Congregation, As I write this last monthly letter to you as your president, I have just finished five days in Jerusalem at a Biennial for the World Union for Progressive Judaism, the umbrella organization for Reform Judaism worldwide. I have been learning and celebrating with Reform Jews from 42 countries throughout the world. I met a young couple from Krakow who have discovered their Judaism and are helping to create a Reform synagogue there. I met a young couple from Prague, trying to recreate the Reform community destroyed by the Nazis. When the young man finishes his university studies, he is planning to go to the new Reform seminary in Berlin to become a rabbi. I met people from the new Jewish communities in Spain. Also, I met an older man, who was born during the war in Hungary. His parents were taken away when he was the age of 3 and he survived with townspeople. After the war, his father returned but then died from illness, so his aunt who had survived raised him. After living in Israel, he went to Germany to study and stayed there to work as an engineer. After retiring, he went to the Reform rabbinic school in Germany and graduated in the 2nd class in He now serves the Hanover Reform Congregation of 700 people, the largest in continental Europe. It has been a wonderful eye-opening experience meeting our extended Jewish family. For Shabbat, Lenore and I went to a Reform synagogue outside of Jerusalem, with other members of the World Union, for services and dinner. We were able to eat dinner with Lenore s cousins and get reacquainted. Saturday morning we had services, in multiple languages, in a room overlooking the old city. It was breathtaking and awe inspiring. In the afternoon, we were in a small group walking to Mt. Zion and then to an overlook over the Kotel, while reading and analyzing Psalms. As we walked up Mt. Zion, we read Psalm 126, A Song of Ascent. On Mt. Zion at David s tomb, we read Psalm 23, The Lord is my shepherd. As we overlooked the Kotel, we read and sang Psalm 146: Who secures justice for those who are wronged; who gives food to the hungry.. This Psalm defines the essence of Reform Judaism, Tikkun Olam. This trip has stimulated my interest in our people, our history, and our future as a worldwide people. It has been a pleasure to be your president during the last three years. I believe that I leave the congregation with a strong new leadership and a strong future. I want to thank all who have worked with me on the Board, the Executive Committee, the professional staff and, particularly, Rabbi Appel. I also want to officially announce that Cantor Deborah Bard will be joining Rabbi Reeves for our High Holiday services. What a wonderful way to start our new year! Thank you and Shalom. Dan Mass From our incoming president: Dear Congregation, Since the spring of 2009 I have been farming at KAM Isaiah Israel. And though I will continue to farm, as of June 7, 2013, I will become president of this wonderful, wonderful congregation. Somehow, the nominating committee figured that since I know a bit about growing tomatoes, I probably also know a bit about being a synagogue president. And, though perplexed by their reasoning, I am honored by their offer and so very grateful for the opportunity. Ever since I arrived at KAMII I have felt kindness and warmth and experienced a deep intellectual and spiritual connection. You have welcomed me into - and helped me become a part of - this amazing community. Great joy I take in knowing you. And to those I do not yet know, I will make every effort in the coming months to change that. I am devoted to our congregation and dedicated, as we grow forward together into our third century, to building a strong future on the foundation of our historic past. May we go from strength to strength. Robert Nevel 2 KAMII

3 Spring Fundraiser Yusho and a Show SRO! An eyewitness account by Jim Bloom, who co-chaired the event with Amy Gelman In what will go down as one of the more memorable events in the recent history of our congregation, over 160 of us gathered for the annual KAM Isaiah Israel fundraising gala. Titled Yusho and a Show, it featured the cuisine of the new Matthias Merges bistro, a talk about Jackie Robinson by Jonathan Eig and the screening of the acclaimed movie 42 at the Harper Theater. After the dust settled and the accounts were cleared, the evening netted over $25,000. News broke at the event, as executive chef of the Merges venture, John Vermiglio, told the crowd that it would be titled HP 53. John and his crew prepared an outstanding dinner that included a salad worthy of our food justice and sustainability project, as well as chicken with polenta. While his boss has received a ton of well-deserved accolades, John has been recognized as one of Zagat s 30 under 30 and featured on Bravo s Around the World in 80 Plates. Our esteemed guest speaker Jonathan Eig gave an entertaining and informative talk about Jackie Robinson and the back story behind his joining the Brooklyn Dodgers. Jonathan s book, Opening Day, chronicles in great detail Robinson s signing and his journey through the Dodger organization and his historic rookie season. As an interesting footnote, Eig has another book coming out soon about the history of the birth control pill. million Development, who are building the Harper Court center, not only bought nine seats but donated back the raffle prizes when their names were drawn. There were some new elements to the gala raffle. Several of the new businesses coming to Hyde Park stepped up and donated prizes. Rebecca Incledon won the Hyde Park Indulgence package that included a certificate to Supreme Jewelers, a night at the Hyatt Place Hyde Park, 24 tickets to the Harper Theater and a month membership at Core Power Yoga. Isaac Kirstein garnered the Hyde Park Night on the Town with dinner at HP 53 prepared by Chef John himself, dinner at Promontory, a certificate to the new Park Tavern Hyde Park and a month membership at Core Power Yoga. Rounding third and heading for home, Lucy Ascoli won the 42 Home Run package that included nine autographed baseballs and four tickets to a Chicago White Sox game. Our friends at Ver- Once we all got to the Harper Theater for 42, owner Tony Fox surprised the group by giving everyone in attendance a ticket good for a future show. Everyone also got to munch on decadent vanilla cupcakes, iced with a blue 42, from Brown Sugar Bakery. From the reactions of everyone at the show, and with a tip of the hat to the recently departed Roger Ebert, 42 earned a thumbs up. Our president, Dan Mass, making introductions The bustling reception Thanks to the generosity of Fred Stein, we received a donation of 8 cases of beer from one of Chicago s best craft breweries, Revolution. Also, members Sam Golden, Art Kohrman and Margie Smigel donated their vacation homes for our silent auction. While it was a long night, the thought on almost everyone s mind was the well-worn Chicago baseball adage wait until next year! Jonathan Eig, the storyteller Rabbi Reeves working the room June/july

12 Religious and Nursery School This past year has been exciting for both our Religious and Nursery School programs, and it is hard to believe that the school year is coming to a close. In May, we had the chance to honor our outstanding Religious School teachers at our Teacher Appreciation Shabbat Reishit. We were blessed with an amazing staff of great Jewish educators. All of these teachers have very full lives outside of their commitments they made here at KA- MII, both as students and adults with full time jobs; however, they graciously chose to spend their Sunday mornings with us sharing their passion for Jewish learning with our students. While the majority of our teachers will continue teaching in the Religious School next year, we are sad to see Geoffrey Rees, Carol Platt and Liz Goldwyn go. While they may no longer be a constant presence on Sunday mornings, they have promised to visit as substitutes and even possibly teach an elective. The last day for the Nursery School is June 7, and this year we will be saying goodbye to our students who are moving on to kindergarten, as well as to two of our teachers: Charone Ousley and Fran Gordon. Charone started out with the Nursery School as a parent to Ronen, and this year she joined our staff as Fran s co-teacher. She and her family are moving back to Skokie this fall, and will be greatly missed. Fran Gordon was one of the catalysts behind the creation of the Nursery School program almost twenty years ago. Since then, she has acted as director and 5-day teacher, and this year began the transition into focusing all of her energy in the classroom. Fran is a phenomenal educator and the relationships that she has cultivated with our students and families are unparalleled. It is an understatement to say that her contributions to this program will be missed, and we wish to celebrate her for educating a generation of students in our neighborhood. Below is a letter from Fran to our community. Dear Nursery School Families, Friends, and KAMII Staff, As of June 7th, I will retire from working at the Nursery School. I have decided it is time for me to spend more quality time with my family. It has been a joy working at KAMII. I have had the pleasure of teaching the best children and working with their families. It has been special and rewarding. I have been blessed to be at the school for 18 years and have always had supportive staff and administration. I am certain that our new director, Sarah Cort, will continue running the preschool in a warm and friendly manner. I am looking forward to our end of the year party where we honor all the children that are moving on. This year, I will join them in saying good-bye to the nursery school. Thank you for your constant support. Fran Gordon I want to end the school year by echoing US Secretary of Education (and former KAMII Nursery School parent) Arne Duncan by encouraging the members of our KAMII family to not only honor our teachers. Secretary Duncan wrote on his blog in May, that we also need to make it a priority to listen to and to celebrate teachers. He continued, What our teachers really need and deserve is our ongoing commitment to work with them. Sarah Cort Synagogue Educator 12 KAMII
