We are wrapping up Confirmation and Religious School. The last day of classes for the Nursery School is very soon. I will be headed to Olin Sang Ruby Union Institute in just a few weeks. There are now dates on the synagogue calendar for barbecues on three Fridays during the summer and a KAMII visit to Millennium Park for a Grant Park Music Festival Concert. We are planning for the High Holidays and for But now is the time to say thank you. Todah rabbah, many thanks, to Cantor Miriam for an amazing year remembering Max Janowski. The Centennial Weekend was fabulous. Thank you also for everything that you have added to our worship and for your committed teaching, particularly the foundation you give to our students. Thank you to Tal Rosen for all that you do for our community. You keep the calendar up to date and the spending in line, making all of the arrangements and taking care of all of the details. The switch to the new database and the new website has been a huge challenge this year, but we have benefited from these changes greatly. Thank you to Roger Drobinige, Corey Caver, Jason Hayes, and Olga Perez. You keep the building running smoothly, despite its age and peculiarities. You set the stage for our programming and we couldn t do it without you. Thank you to Stewart Martin, Abbey Allison, and Jacqui Lyda. You answer the phone with a smile and keep the copier humming along. You sort through all of the things that are thrown at you and make order from the chaos. On Friday mornings, I welcome a dinosaur who s knocking at our door and celebrate Shabbat with the students of our Nursery School. Thank you to Fran Gordon and the teachers of our Nursery School. Our students enjoy their days at KAMII, and grow so much over the year. I love spending time with them, with you, and with the dinosaur. Thank you to Jessica Hassid and the faculty of our Religious School. Two years ago when Jessica started as our Religious School Director, I was excited by the expertise that she brought as a teacher and as an artist. Jessica, we are going to miss you very much. You have done a great job running our Religious School. To our teachers, you work very hard and prepare our students well. Finally, thank you to the lay leadership of KAM Isaiah Israel. The work that you do on behalf of the congregation is holy work. It isn t always easy work and it isn t always appreciated. But you have done much to sustain our community and your efforts are creating a foundation that will enable us to go from strength to strength. I am honored to serve as your rabbi and to be in partnership with you. Thank you for your labors on behalf of our community. Thank you!

3 Social Happenings Third Annual Erev Midsummer Party Pack your Picnic for the July 14 KAMII Outing to Grant Park Music Festival On Saturday, July 14, join your fellow congregants for our annual picnic, with great music, in Millennium Park s Pritzker Pavilion. At 8:00 p.m., we ll hear Perfectly Frank: From Broadway to Hollywood, highlighting the work of one of the great classic Broadway (and Jewish) composers, Frank Loesser ( ), whose much-loved works include Guys and Dolls, The Most Happy Fella, and How to Succeed in Business without Really Trying. He wrote over 700 songs including Baby, It s Cold Outside, What Are You Doing New Year s Eve?, and Praise the Lord and Pass the Ammunition. In The KAMII Star Garden Saturday, June 23 6:00-9:00 p.m. Potluck dinner and reading aloud Shakespeare s A Midsummer Night s Dream Family and friends of all ages are welcome. Bring food, drink, chairs, and blankets. Look for the KA- MII banner in the center-front of the lawn area after 6:00 pm. In the farming world, June 24th is considered Midsummer Day -- midpoint of the growing season, halfway between the start of planting and the final harvest. And in that world, Erev Midsummer is a time to make merry and celebrate fertility. June 23, 2012, will be our Erev Midsummer. So, to celebrate the work we have done to date and to forget about the work we have ahead, let s all gather in the garden, eat, drink (i.e. make merry), and read aloud, together, A Midsummer Night s Dream. 4 In the Family By Grace Wolf yxxx Marking an Important Educational Anniversary Peter Ascoli will be speaking at a conference at Tuskegee University June to mark the 100th anniversary of the Rosenwald Rural School Building Program. Building safe, decent public schools for rural southern African Americans was a project funded by Peter s grandfather, Julius Rosenwald, at the request of Booker T. Washington, who headed the Tuskegee Institute in By 1917, one in every five rural schools for black students in the South was a Rosenwald school, and they served one third of the region s rural black schoolchildren and teachers. When the program concluded in 1932, it had produced 4,977 new schools, 217 teachers homes, and 163 shop buildings (for teaching vocational skills), constructed at a total cost of $28,408,520 to serve 664,615 students in 15 states. yxxx Speaking Out for Transparency in Government Julie Roin, a professor at the University of Chicago Law School, was among the local government experts quoted in an April 16 Chicago Tribune article about an ordinance proposing to rebuild Chicago through expanded public-private partnerships known as the Chicago Infrastructure Trust. Julie expressed some skepticism about the ordinance even after it was revised to meet some aldermen s objections. She said, The whole ordinance reeks of trust us, trust me--i ll do the right thing. But there aren t any controls. Maybe [the Mayor] is to be trusted and the people he appoints are to be trusted, but how do we know? She criticized the plan for lack of transparency and a failure to set up checks and balances on the trust s power. yxxx Under the Chupah On March 20, Joshua Bloomberg, son of Karen and Steve Bloomberg, married Noemie Perez in Jerusalem at the Ramat Rachel Kibbutz. Karen reports, It was a beautiful ceremony and a typically festive Israeli wedding with 350 guests. Nine of Josh s American friends (most of them from Olin-Sang-Ruby Union Institute camp) flew to Israel to attend the festivities, as did six of Noemie s French friends. Now they are both back in school at Hadassah College studying Communication Disorders. Josh made aliyah in 2007 and completed his IDF service as an artillery commander. Also this spring, Josh s sister Michelle is receiving a master s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from John F. Kennedy University in California. Michelle is married to Margaret Roberts and lives in Oakland, California. On April 28, Robert Granat, son of Shari and Chuck Granat, married Natalie Gladstein in Philadelphia in a small ceremony attended only by parents, grandparents, and siblings. Jessica Shimberg, granddaughter of Norman Weinberg, officiated. Robert and Natalie met as campers at OSRUI. Natalie has just graduated from medical school at Drexel University and this summer will begin her residency in women s medicine at Northwestern. As soon as Robert completes his studies at Temple University, he will join Natalie in Chicago. On May 5, David Goldwyn, son of Vicki and John Goldwyn, married Meg Nisch. David and Meg met at the University of Michigan in a class that sent them both on an archaeological dig to Pompeii. Cantor Emerita Deborah Bard officiated. yxxx Greeting a New Generation Norman Weinberg recently greeted another great-grandchild. Yonatan Leo Richman-Dreyfus was born on April 7 in Washington, D.C., to Ben Dreyfus and Rabbi Elizabeth Richman. Yonatan is the grandson of Rabbi Ellen Weinberg Dreyfus and Dr. James Dreyfus, and the great-great-great grandson of Rabbi Leo Baeck, z l. yxxx Lost to Channel 7 But Not to Chicago Emily Barr, who has been president and general manager of WLS-Channel 7 since 1997, has left the ABC-owned television station in order to head the six television stations of Post-Newsweek. She will join her new employer in July. According to the May 9 Chicago Tribune, Post-Newsweek, which is based in Detroit, will shift its headquarters here to accommodate her, despite the fact that there is no Chicago affiliate. Emily will be traveling to stations in Detroit, Houston, Miami, Orlando, San Antonio, and Jacksonville. She said, I ve had just an amazing run [in Chicago] and I ve appreciated every minute of it. But this came along and it was just too good to pass up. Senator Russell Feingold will lead the July study session on While America Sleeps: Our nation s collective failure in responding properly to the challenges of the post-9/11 era. For more information or to register, contact or osruiprograms@urj.org. yxxx Family Fun at Jewish Festival The biennial Greater Chicago Jewish Festival will be held this year on Sunday, June 10, 11 a.m. - 6 p.m., at St. Paul Woods in the Cook County Forest Preserves, on Oakton Street west of Lehigh, in Morton Grove. The suggested donation is $5 per person. The festival will feature music and dance on 4 stages, children s activities, an art fair, an organization fair, and lots of kosher food. Featured performers include Steven Page of Barenaked Ladies, Blue Fringe, Soul Aviv, Rabbi Joe Black, Kol Sasson, Listen UP!, Maxwell Street Klezmer Band, Shakshuka, Joel Frankel, and many more. For more information or to volunteeer, go to or call yxxx This Summer at Spertus On Sunday, June 24, at 2:00 p.m., Spertus is presenting a screening and discussion of the film Torn, a documentary about a Polish Catholic priest whose world turns upside down when he learns that his parents were Jews who gave him to Catholic neighbors to save him from the Holocaust. At age 67, he leaves Poland for Israel to explore his Jewish identity. The post-screening discussion will be led by Father John Pawlikowski, Director of the Catholic-Jewish Studies Program at Catholic Theological Union, and Rabbi David Fox Sandmel, Rabbi-Educator at Temple Sholom and Crown-Ryan Professor of Jewish Studies at CTU. Tickets cost $18, $10 for Spertus members, $8 for students. Purchase tickets at spertus.edu, or call On Wednesday, August 1, at 6:30 p.m., Spertus will show the film Nuremberg, followed by a discussion led by Sandra Schulberg, who produced the film s restoration and whose father was its original writer/director. This film is the U.S. government s longsuppressed 1948 documentary about the trial of top Nazi leaders. It demonstrates how international prosecutors built their case using the Nazis own films and records. The program will explain why American officials banned the film s original release here for political reasons. Admission is free, but reservations are strongly recommended. FilmRSVP@spertus.edu. This event is organized in conjunction with the American Bar Association s continuing legal education showcase program on Nuremberg at its annual meeting in Chicago. Chapter 6 of Uncovered & Rediscovered Stories of Jewish Chicago: A Jewish Homeland will be on exhibit June 3 - October 4 on the ground floor of the Spertus building. This chapter documents efforts of Chicagoans to secure a homeland for the Jewish people, beginning with the founding of this country s first Zionist organization on Chicago s Near West Side in 1896, and concluding with the celebrations at the Chicago Stadium for the founding of the State of Israel. Admission to the exhibit is free. It is open 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. on Sunday, Monday, and Wednesday; 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. on Thursday; and 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. on Friday. It is closed Tuesday and Saturday. 8 WHY THE BINS? how you can help As you enter the Temple from the parking lot, look under the right-hand table and you will see three collection bins. Congregants may question why they are there and what happens to the items placed in them. There is a sign on the board explaining, but here s an update and additional information. One bin is for collecting baby items; another for clothing along with towels, sheets, blankets, kitchen supplies, plus other items in good condition; and the third, for always needed non-perishable foods. Al and Gloria Needlman, longtime supporters of Midwest Workers Association, empty the bins as they fill with clean, usable items, and deliver their contents to MWA. What is always needed is a steady supply of non- perishable foods (i.e. boxes of dried cereals, peanut butter, canned foods, pasta, rice, beans, etc.) These foods will feed people who have an emergency a fire, lost job, illness. MWA s food closet supply is constantly tapped, and the KAMII community is working to help keep it filled. MWA has weekly fresh food distribution donations from the Blue Island wholesale markets, along with other suppliers, but is always looking for other sources for breads, cheeses - items taken off the shelves because of their expiration date but still very beneficial. Please be part of this Mitzvah. MWA needs your help. Midwest Workers is not a charity; it is an all-volunteer, self-help association, now in its sixteenth year. The full-time community organizers volunteer 365 days a year. Membership comes from all walks of the economy and from the many communities who are reached by twice weekly, door-to-door canvasses. Doctors and dentists see members without charge. Learn about the important work done by MWA. There are so many ways you can help. Volunteer your time, your money, and your professional skills. For instance, be a driver or advocate for medical sessions. Summer is a great time to find out what you can do to become involved. 9 Religious School Meet Our New Religious School Director, Sarah Cort I cannot wait to start... Here s my bio, to Jewish Federations of North America. help you get to know me as the new Religious School Director at KAM Isaiah Israel. I am excited to explore the world of Jewish enrichment education at KAM Isaiah Israel. Hav- I am a St. Louis native, avid fan of the 2011 World Series Champion Cardinals, and recent graduate of Indiana University, with my Sunday, I am committed to bringing Judaism ing grown up attending religious school every degree in early childhood education. I grew up to life through engaging and creative learning attending and working at summer camps, and opportunities for all ages. I look forward to am now the overnight junior village unit head experiencing all that Hyde Park has to offer and Israel Educator at JCYS Camp Henry and joining the KAM Isaiah Israel community. 10 Nursery School A Special Note about End-of-the-Year Separation Anxiety Separation issues at the end of the school year have many of the same ingredients as separation issues at the beginning of the year. It is important that we deal with these issues continually and not just work on them in the fall and spring. At the end of the year, children are doing in reverse what they mastered in the fall. They are saying good-bye to beloved teachers, a familiar classroom, valued friends, and a sense of security from their school routine. If they are going off to a new school, they are likely to feel frustrated at leaving one familiar and comfortable environment for a new, unfamiliar place with new routines. There is excitement and anticipation of something new, and a sense of pride at being big enough to move on. There is also the fear of the unknown and the sense of sadness and loss at leaving the people and places they are now attached to. Children, developmentally ill-equipped to verbalize these feelings, may act out by regressing, behaving wickedly, crying easily, and, as when they started nursery school, having difficulty saying good-bye to parent(s). At the end of this year, we spend time helping the children deal with sad and glad feelings. We help them verbalize their ambivalence. Each classroom is working on a moving-on train where they are asked to share their plans for the future: what they will do in the summer, where they will go to kindergarten, what classroom they will be in next summer and fall, and the feelings related to these activities. They are asked to take stock of what they like about school, what they have learned, and what they will miss. Remember, teachers and parents also experience separation pangs. The teachers have become attached to your children. We too feel a sense of loss as the children move on. The bonds are strong and we let the children know that it is hard for us to say good-bye and that they are always welcome to visit us. This is a very special time in the child s life and in the parents. Everyone has had a positive year. Making changes and starting anew bring many emotions. If you are having uncomfortable feelings about moving on, just put yourself in your child s place. For parents that have any special concerns, please make an appointment to talk.
