3 TIMEMPHIS.ORG 3 Between You and Me A Legacy of Change and Repetition By: Rabbi Micah Greenstein This is the last issue of the Voice, before we start saying Shanah Tovah in anticipation of Rosh Hashanah. The Hebrew word for year, shanah, comes from a seemingly contradictory root (shin-nun-hey). Those letters also form the words for repeat and change. In other words, implicit in the passage of time, whether a lazy summer or a hectic year, is both repetition and change. home. Our endurance and vibrancy is because of our ability to keep pace with the changing era, not in spite of it. Reform Judaism did not create the modern world, the emancipation of women, or greater connectivity across races and peoples. However, our response to modernity explains why Judaism has survived and thrived, not only in Memphis, but throughout America. Israel Zangwill, the close associate of Zionist Theodore Herzl, noted that for the Jewish people, the past is our cradle, not our prison The past is for inspiration, not imitation. Looking back at Jewish history, the eternal light of synagogues, like ours, has not changed. Unlike schools that have summer vacations, our Temple shul never closes. In fact, it is likely that a synagogue may be the longest, continuous representation of a human institution, one that promotes the uplifting of humanity on an ongoing basis. Just look at Memphis and Temple Israel. Only 36 pioneering Jews created our synagogue in Downtown Memphis seven years before the Civil War. 163 summers later, thousands of Jewish families and individuals call Temple their spiritual Implicit in the passage of time, whether a lazy summer or a hectic year, is both repetition and change. The danger of Reform Judaism is when it becomes its own orthodoxy. Some of the early 19 th century Reformers were as resistant to change in practice as they were for it in theory. No longer do we have that shortcoming. Our 21 st century congregation embraces the present, even as we cherish the past. Even more, we are anticipating the future by connecting to Judaism, the larger Memphis community, and new members through initiatives like Crosstown Concourse with a planned opening at the end of the summer. From a spiritual perspective, there really aren t any beginnings or endings, just continuations. Whether it s new approaches to music, spirituality, or lifetime learning, the Temple community, continues the repetition of change while keeping Judaism vibrant all year long. Have a wonderful summer and drop by 1376 East Massey any time!
