שׁ ל פּ ס ח ה גּ ד ה A Messianic Jewish Haggadah for Pesach Why is This Night Different From All Other Nights?

Afterwards, Moses and Aaron came and said to Pharaoh, So said Adonai, the God of Yisra el, Send out My people that they may celebrate a feast to Me in the wilderness. Sh mot (Exodus) 5:1 1 2

/ Hak arah ה קּ ע ר ה The Seder Plate 3 מ צ ה/ Matzah Unleavened Bread A reminder that the Children of Yisra el had to leave Egypt so quickly that their bread didn t have time to rise. Since Chametz (leavening) also represents sin in our lives, this matzah is fulfilled in Messiah Yeshua, the Sinless One, Who was pierced and striped on our behalf. ז רוֹע / Z roah בּ יצ ה/ Beitzah Roasted Egg This symbolizes the roasted lamb (Chagigah offering) that was once sacrificed in the Temple. Over the centuries, the roasted egg became a food consumed during times of mourning. As believers, we remember past tragedies and look ahead to the coming Temple from which Messiah Yeshua will reign. מ רוֹר/ Maror Horseradish The bitter herb used to remind us of the bitterness of bondage to sin. Roasted Bone A roasted lamb shankbone represents the sacrifice lamb whose blood was put on the door post. Romaine Lettuce The second of the bitter herbs mentioned in Numbers 9:11. 4 ח רוֹס ת/ Charoset כּ ר פּ ס/ Karpas Parsley It is dipped in salt water and eaten to remind us of the tears shed while under the yoke of slavery in Egypt. ח ז ר ת/ Chazeret Mixture of Nuts and Fruit. The charoset symbolizes the mortar used for the bricks during Yisra el s slavery in Egypt.

4 The Four Cups of Wine As we proceed through this Haggadah (Telling), we will be drinking from four cups of wine/juice (or from one cup four times). The importance of this is so great, that we are told a person should sell some personal belongings, do any type of work, or even beg in order to have money for the ceremonial wine. The reason that so much importance is placed on having the wine is due to the fact that it is considered to be the act of proclaiming the wonderful miracle of redemption. The four cups stand for the four I wills which God spoke in Sh mot (Exodus) 6:6-7: I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will deliver you from under their bondage. I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with great judgments. Then I will take you to Me for a people, and I will be your God... The four cups at the Seder represent the four expressions of redemption -- bring, deliver, redeem and take. ה וצ את י/ Ho tzeti The Cup of Sanctification - I will bring you out I will free you from the forced labor of the Egyptians. First, God chose us to be His holy (separated) people. To accomplish this, He promised to unburden us from our enemy s entanglements. ה צ ל ת י/ Hi tzalti The Cup of Deliverance - I will deliver you I will rescue you from their oppression. Second, we cannot affect our own release. In our helpless state we must trust in God, and in Him alone, for our salvation. ג אל ת י/ Ga alti The Cup of Redemption - I will redeem you I will redeem you with an outstretched arm. Third, God further reveals to us that His sovereign work of salvation necessitates both divine power and payment. Our salvation would cost Him dearly, even the life of the Lamb. ל ק ח ת י/ La kachti The Cup of Restoration - I will take you I will take you as My people, and I will be your God. Finally, in the fourth cup (sometimes known as the Cup of Praise ), God lets us know that the redemption that is ours is not yet fully complete. We praise Him for what we have, but we must await the future with the hope of Messiah s return, for He alone can transform us fully into the holy people He has ordained. This fourth cup envisions a time when Yisra el, and all those who have attached themselves to her through faith, will worship God in truth, and will be known in every way as His people. This final cup reminds us that our redemption is not yet fully realized, and though we enjoy the realities of it in the present, the future still holds our full and final restoration. The Cup of Eliyahu A fifth cup was later added by the Rabbis, called the Cup of Elijah. The custom of filling a fifth cup of wine for Eliyahu the Prophet at the Seder table is meant to symbolize that he would be a welcome guest at the Seder (Eliyahu never died; he ascended to heaven). Yochanan Ha Matbil (John the Immerser) fulfilled the role of Eliyahu in the days of our Messiah, and many see Eliyahu himself heralding the return of Yeshua. The tradition of opening the door during the Seder has to do not only with the idea of symbolically inviting Messiah s forerunner, but also guests 5 who are in need. Some also see the open door as a picture of our unwavering trust in God s protection. Regardless of what may enter in and befall us; He is in control and sovereign over all.

5 Come let us welcome the Shabbat of Pesach. May its joy, peace, and rest illumine our hearts and cleanse our minds from the worries of the week. In honor of our sacred tradition that hollows and unites Yisra el and all those attached to her in all lands and through all ages, we kindle the lights of Shabbat. Blessed are You, O Lord our God, King of the universe, Who has sanctified us by Your commandments and has instructed us concerning the kindling of the Shabbat and festival lights. בּ רוּ ך א תּ ה יי א לה ינוּ מ ל ך ה עוֹל ם, שׁ ה ח י נוּ, ו ק י מ נוּ, ו ה גּ יע נוּ ל ז מ ן ה ז ה: Baruch Atah Adonai Eloheinu, Melech ha olam, she hecheyanu, v ki yemanu, v higi anu lazman ha zeh. Blessed are You, O Lord our God, King of the universe, Who has granted us life, sustained us, and enabled us to reach this season. The Seder Begins Kadesh /ק דּ שׁ - We Recite the Kiddush C - And when the hour had come, He reclined, and the twelve apostles with him. He said to them, I have greatly longed to eat this Pesach offering with you before My suffering. For I say to you that I will not eat it any more until it is fulfilled in the Kingdom of God. Luke 22:14-16 L - Pesach is a story of remembrances. The observances in the Seder remind us of the bondage of Egypt and the price that was paid for our deliverance. Thus, we eat different foods that help us to identify with our ancestors. Through the celebration of Pesach, we see the redemption that God offers if we would only accept the gift of His love. We are taught that if we would only trust in Him, He will lead us through all the trials and difficulties we may face in life. We too were down-trodden in our slavery to sin. Just as the ancient children of Yisra el could not deliver themselves from such servitude, neither were we able to free ourselves from our bondage to sin. And so, let us begin by pouring the first cup, the Cup of Sanctification... (Only partially fill the cup, as we will do this four times) C - We praise God for His provision! He meets our needs; even giving us that which is pleasing and joyful. (Raise the cup) בּ רוּ ך א תּ ה יי א לה ינוּ, מ ל ך ה עוֹל ם, בּוֹר א פּ ר י ה גּ פ ן: C - Baruch Atah Adonai Eloheinu, Melech ha olam, borei p ri ha gafen. Blessed are You, O Lord our God, King of the universe, Who creates the fruit of the vine. (Lean to the left and drink the first cup, the Cup of Sanctification)

6 C - And You, Adonai our God, have given us in love, Sabbaths for rest and festivals for gladness, feasts and festive seasons for rejoicing; this Shabbat and this Feast of Unleavened Bread (Chag ha Matzah), the season of our freedom, a holy convocation, commemorating the departure from Egypt. L - The first cup marks Yisra el as God s chosen; the people for whom He would bring deliverance from under the burden of slavery, freeing them to worship and serve Him in spirit and truth. This is the same work He does for each and every child He brings into His family. He chooses them of His own sovereign will and sets about to free them from the shackles of slavery. This freedom is for one purpose: to serve Him as He intends. It is the calling of each and every child of God to be sanctified, set apart unto God, to be given over to His service and His service alone. The first cup of the Seder, the Cup of Sanctification or Separation, reminds us of this crucial starting point of our salvation. C - Adonai, You have sanctified us; You have called us to Be holy as You are holy. We thank You, Abba, that You have allowed us to rediscover Your Holy Torah, enabling us to grasp the fullness of Scripture. You have preserved for Yourself a remnant people and called us to be a light and the salt of the earth. May we be a people who carry Your Name and declare Your praise. Amen. Ur chatz /וּר - We Wash the Hands ח ץ L - The Priests of Yisra el were required to wash before performing their service at the altar and before eating the tithes and sacrificial foods which were required to be consumed in a state of purity. The Seder is centered around the Pesach Lamb that was to be eaten only by those who were ritually pure. According to ancient tradition, the table is regarded as an altar. Therefore, we perform a symbolic washing. (We will all say the blessing together and then proceed with hand washing) בּ רוּ ך א תּ ה יי א לה נוּ, מ ל ך ה עוֹל ם, א שׁ ר ק דּ שׁ נוּ בּ מ צ וֹת יו, ו צ וּ נוּ ע ל נ ט יל ת י ד י ם: C - Baruch Atah Adonai Eloheinu, Melech ha olam, asher kid shanu b mitzvotav v tzivanu al n tilat yadayim Blessed are You, O Lord our God, King of the universe, who has sanctified us by Your commandments, and instructed us concerning the washing (or raising up) of hands. (Hands are washed at stations) L - It was at this time in the Seder that Messiah Yeshua humbled himself and went one step further by washing even the feet of his disciples. Many believe that Yeshua s enhanced version of this ceremony was a reference of His atoning work that would cleanse us from all sin. By His humble act here, He demonstrated that He was about to become the suffering Servant of the Lord. C - It happened that after He washed their feet, taken back His clothes, and returned to the table, He said to them, Do you understand what I have done to you? You call me Rabbi and Master, and you do well in saying so, for that is what I am. Therefore, if I, the Rabbi and Master, have washed your feet, you also are obligated to wash one another s feet. For I give you a sign, so that you too will do 7 what I have done for you. Amen, amen, I say to you, there is no servant greater than his master, and there is no one who is sent that is greater than the one who sent him. If you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them. Yochanan (John) 13:12-17

7 Kar pas /כּ ר - We Eat the Parsley פּ ס L - And now we dip the parsley into the salt water as a reminder of the tears of our bondage in Egypt. We give thanks for the produce of our toil, even while in captivity. Blessed are You, O Lord our God, King of the universe, who creates the fruit of the ground. (Dip the parsley into the salt water and eat) Yachatz /י ח ץ - We Break the Middle Matzah L - We have in the matzah tash (pouch) three matzot. One tradition says that these matzot symbolize the three groups within Yisra el: The Cohanim (Priests), the Levi im (Levites), and the rest of Yisra el. Another says that they represent Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Yet another, that they are a picture of the three Temples, with the third being rebuilt before Mashiach returns. However, as we will see, there is much more to this symbolism. We now take the middle matzah out of the tash and break it into two pieces. The smaller piece is placed back in the middle compartment. The larger of the two pieces is wrapped in a napkin and hidden away during the meal, to be retrieved afterwards. This piece is called the Afikoman, which we will explain later. Magid /מ גּ יד - We Tell the Story of the Exodus from Egypt (One person at each table lifts up the two-and-a-half matzot) L - We recognize that this is the last meal of Yisra el under the captivity of Egypt. We invite everyone to come and participate in Pesach, even knowing that there are those who will refuse to listen. C - We recognize that we are about to leave our captivity, and we know that our hope is in Adonai, Who not only leads us from bondage, but promises freedom and a better place for those who seek after Him. C - This is the bread of affliction that our fathers ate in the land of Egypt. Let all who are hungry come and eat! Let all who are needy come and celebrate Pesach! Now we are here, but next year may we be in the Land of Yisra el. Now we are slaves, but next year may we be free! (You may put down the matzah) (Please pour the second cup, the Cup of Deliverance) 8

8 Ma /מ ה Nish tanah נּ שׁ ת נּ ה What has changed? The Four Questions L - The Four Questions is an ancient tradition that precedes the time of Yeshua. The questions would typically be asked by the youngest child, and if no child was present, then the youngest adult. Tradition would also prescribe the youngest to recline upon the leader of the Seder. Yochanan (John) 13:23 hints at this pattern and sees Yochanan (the youngest and Yeshua s favorite) leaning on Yeshua s side. This indicates that he sat on Yeshua s right side, as this was where the youngest child would sit. (Sing together ) מ ה נּ שׁ תּ נּ ה ה לּ י ל ה ה ז ה מ כּ ל ה לּ ילוֹת? C - Ma nish tanah ha lilah ha zeh mikol ha leylot? What makes this night different from all other nights? שׁ בּ כ ל ה לּ ילוֹת אנוּ אוֹכ ל ין ח מ ץ וּמ צּ ה, ה לּ י ל ה ה ז ה כּ לּוֹ מ צּ ה. C- Sheb chol ha leylot anu och lin bein yosh vin 9 u vein m subin; halaylah hazeh kulanu m subin. On all other nights, we eat either sitting upright or reclining; on this night, we all recline.

L - So we answer with these words. 9 C - We were slaves to Pharaoh in Egypt, but Adonai our God took us out from there with a strong hand and with an outstretched arm! But if the Holy One, blessed is He, had not taken our fathers out of Egypt, then we, our children, and our children s children would have remained enslaved to Pharaoh in Egypt. L - Even if we all were sages, if we all were very wise, if we all were elders, if we all knew Torah, it would still be a commandment incumbent upon us to retell the story of the exodus from Egypt. Anyone who retells extensively about the exodus from Egypt is a praiseworthy person. C - Baruch ha Makom, baruch Hu. Baruch she natan Torah l amo Yisra el, baruch Hu. Blessed is the Omnipresent, Blessed is He. Blessed is He Who gave the Torah to His people Yisra el; blessed is He. She einoh Yodeah Lishol The One Who Does Not Know How to Ask L - Tradition speaks of four children; one wise, one wicked, one simple, and one who does not know how to ask. Each one must be answered according to his level of understanding and responsiveness. The Torah instructs us as to how we may answer. C - The first son (Deut. 6:20) is the wise one, and what does he say? What are the testimonies, the statutes, and the laws which Adonai our God has commanded us? We should instruct him in everything according to the laws and testimonies of Pesach, that all is to be consumed, and that nothing is to be eaten after the Pesach Afikoman. C - The second son (Exo. 12:26) is the wicked one, and what does he say? What is this service to you? By saying To you, he excludes himself from the community, not only denying his people, but rejecting the God of his fathers. We therefore say to him, It is because of what Adonai did for me when I left Egypt. We say, for me and not for you, for had he been there, he would likely have rejected the redemption offered to him and not been delivered from bondage and death. C - The third son (Exo. 13:14) is the simple one, and what does he say? What is this? We answer with the same simplicity with which the question was asked, By strength of hand, Adonai our God brought us out from Egypt, out of the house of bondage. C - As for the fourth son (Exo. 13:8), he does not even know how to ask, so we must articulate for him. We wish to give him what is surely in his heart to know. The Scriptures 10 say, You shall tell your son on that day, saying, It is because of that which Adonai did for me when I went forth from Egypt.

10 A Brief History of Our People L - And so we recount the history of our people. C - In times past, our ancestors served idols, but now, the infinite God of the universe has brought us near to His service. As it is written, Joshua said to the entire nation, This is what Adonai, God of Yisra el has said: Long ago, your fathers lived on the other side of the river Terah the father of Abraham and Nahor and they served other gods. But I took your father Abraham from across the river, and I led him throughout the land of Canaan. I multiplied his offspring, and I gave him Isaac. To Isaac I gave Jacob and Esau, and I gave Esau, Mount Se ir to possess it. But Jacob and his sons went down to Egypt. Yeho shuah (Joshua) 24:2-4 C - For the Holy One, blessed is He, already knew the days needed to fulfill His word which He had pledged to Abraham our father at the covenant between the portions when He said, You shall know with certainty that your descendants shall be strangers in a land that is not theirs, and shall serve them; and they shall afflict them four hundred years. But also, that nation whom they shall serve, I will judge; and afterward they shall come out with great possessions. B resheet (Genesis) 15:13-14 (All raise the second cup, the Cup of Deliverance) C - This promise is what has stood strong for our fathers and for us. For there was not only one nation who rose up against us to put an end to us, but in each and every generation they rise up against us to put an end to us. But the Holy One, blessed is He, rescues us from their hand. (Place cup back on table) L - Go and learn what Laban the Aramean sought to do to our father Jacob. Pharoah only decreed against the males, but Laban tried to uproot everyone. As it is said, An Aramean was trying to destroy my father. He went to Egypt and sojourned there, with only a few people. There he became a nation; great, strong and numerous. D varim (Deut.) 26:5 C - And sojourned there. This teaches that our father Jacob did not go down to remain permanently in Egypt, but only to sojourn there. As it is said, And he said to Pharoah, We have come to sojourn in the land, because there is no pasture for your servants flock. For the famine is severe in the land of Canaan; now please let your servants dwell in the land of Goshen. B resheet 47:4 C - But Yisra el became a distinct nation among the Egyptians. And the Children of Yisra el were fruitful and teemed and multiplied and became very, very strong, and the land was filled with them. Sh mot (Exodus) 1:7 C - Now a new king arose over Egypt, who did not know Joseph. And the Egyptians did evil to us. As it is said, Come let us deal wisely with them, lest they multiply, and it will be that in the event of war, they will combine with our enemies and fight against us and go up out of the land. They appointed over them taskmasters in order to afflict them with their burdens, and they built garrison cities for Pharoah: Pithom and Ra amses. Sh mot 1:10-11 C - In those many days, the King of Egypt died, and the 11 children of Yisra el groaned because of the slavery, and they cried out; their plea ascended to Adonai from the slavery. And Adonai heard their groaning, and He remembered his covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Sh mot 2:23-24

L - We will now recount the ten plagues with which the Egyptians were stricken because they would not hearken 11 to Adonai our God and let our people go. We dip our fingers in our glasses, dripping a drop of wine/juice on our plates as each of the ten plagues is named. This is done to diminish the cup of rejoicing as a sign of pity for the suffering of the Egyptians. We are ever grateful for the work of Adonai, but we do not rejoice at the suffering of others, even our enemies. (With each drop, the congregation declares the plague in Hebrew, then English) Blood Dam /דּ ם - 1. Flies Arov /ע רוֹב - Swarms of 4. Darkness Choshech /ח - שׁ ך.9 Disease Dever /דּ ב ר - Cattle 5. 13 12 Da yenu /דּ יּ נוּ It would have been enough for us The earliest full text of the song can be found in the first medieval haggadah, which is part of the ninth-century work titled Seder Rav Amram. (Shortened Version) Chorus - Dai da yenu, dai da yenu, dai da yenu, da yenu, da yenu, da yenu. א לּוּ הוֹצ י אנוּ מ מּ צ ר י ם...דּ י נוּ C - Illu hotsi, hotsi anu, hotsi anu mi mitzraim, hotsi anu mi mitzraim da yenu! Had He only brought us up from Egypt it would have been enough for us! Had he only bestowed upon us the gift of the Sabbath, it would have been enough! (Chorus x2) א לּוּ נ ת ן ל נוּ א ת ה תּוֹר ה... דּ י נוּ C - Illu natan, natan lanu, natan lanu et ha Torah, natan lanu et ha Torah da yenu! Had He only bestowed upon us the gift of Torah, it would have been enough! (Chorus x3) C - But He saved us from Egypt, and took us through the sea on dry land, and destroyed our oppressors, and supplied our needs in the wilderness for forty years, and brought us to Mount Sinai, and gave us His Holy Torah, and bestowed on us His Shabbat rest, and He brought us into the Land that He promised to our fathers. He then gave us His Son to redeem us from death, raised Him again and atoned for all our sins, and in Messiah, He gives eternal life abundantly. For all God s blessings we are grateful. (Congregation together) (Leader holds up the shank bone) בּ רוּ ך ה שׁ ם יי. Baruch HaShem Adonai. Blessed be the Name of the Lord. L - The teacher of Rabbi Paul (Sha ul), Rabbi Gamli el, said that unless three things were discussed at Pesach, one has not fulfilled his obligation, namely... Pesach /פּ ס ח 13 Maror /מ רוֹר 3. Matzah /מ צ ה The Passover Offering Unleavened Bread Bitter Herbs

C - We ask, Pesach, what is this? Why did our fathers eat the Passover lamb? It is because The Omnipresent passed over our fathers homes in Egypt. The houses of the Egyptians were struck with a plague, but our houses were saved. 13 (Place shank bone back on plate and lift the matzah) C - We ask, Matzah, what is this? Why do we eat this unleavened bread? It is because the dough of our fathers did not have time to become leavened. They had to depart in haste when Adonai brought them out of the house of bondage. (The matzah is put down and the maror is raised) C - We ask, Maror, what is this? Why do we eat these bitter herbs? It is because our fathers lives were made bitter in Egypt. We were commanded to make bricks without straw, we were commanded to work the fields of our oppressors. (The maror is put down) L - Our traditions say that in every generation, each of us should regard himself as if he had personally come out of Egypt. As it is written, You shall tell your child on that day, It is because of that which Adonai did for me when I came forth out of Egypt. (All raise the second cup, the Cup of Deliverance) C - Thus, it is our joy and our duty to thank, to laud, to praise, to glorify, to exalt, to adore, to bless, to elevate, and to honor the One who did all these miracles for our fathers and for us. He took us from slavery to freedom, from sorrow to joy, from mourning to festivity, from deep darkness to great light, and from bondage to redemption. Hallelu Yah! (All put down the second cup, the Cup of Deliverance) (The following portions of the Hallel are read) : Hallel /ה ל ל Psalms Hallelu Yah! Praise, O servants of Adonai; praise the Name of Adonai. Blessed be the Name of Adonai from this time forth and forever. From the place where the sun rises to the place where it sets, the Name of Adonai is to be praised. Adonai is lifted above all nations; His glory is over the heavens. Who is like Adonai our God, Who places His dwelling place on high, Who bends low to look upon the heavens and the earth? He raises the poor from the dust, and He will lift the destitute from the trash heap, to set him among nobles, among the nobles of His people. He sets the barren woman of the house as a glad mother of children. Hallelu Yah! T hillim 113 When Yisra el went out from Egypt, the house of Jacob from a people of strange language, Judah was His high place; Yisra el, His dominion. The sea saw it and fled; the Jordan River turned back. The mountains danced like rams, the hills like lambs. What is it, O sea, that you flee? 14 O Jordan, that makes you turn back? O mountains that makes you dance like rams? O hills, like lambs? Tremble, O earth, before the Master before the God of Jacob, Who changes the rock into a watery marsh; the flint into a spring of water. T hillim 114

14 C - Even as You have brought us to this night so that we may eat unleavened bread and bitter herbs, so may we, should You tarry, reach other seasons of rejoicing. And may we celebrate the coming of Messiah, the rebuilding of Your Holy City, and the Passover Lamb which was slain to bring life to Yisra el and hope to the nations. We shall all give thanks with a new song for our redemption and the deliverance of our souls. Blessed are You, Adonai, Redeemer of Yisra el and the nations. (All raise the second cup, the Cup of Deliverance) C - We thank You, our Father, for the holy vine of Your servant David that You made known to us through Your servant Yeshua. Yours is the glory forever. Blessed are you, O Lord our God, King of the universe, Who creates the fruit of the vine. C - Adonai, I come before You tired and weary of carrying the burdens of my sin alone. I need Your deliverance just as the Children of Yisra el needed Your deliverance. I understand that as I raise this cup in sincerity to You, I am crying out for deliverance from my evil taskmaster. Abba, I confess my sins and I ask You now to deliver me from this captor. Abba, I ask for Your complete and utter deliverance so that I may leave this Egypt and serve You instead. Thank You, Adonai, for providing an escape for me. I delight in Your power and authority to accomplish deliverance on my behalf. You are my God, Who has reached out to me with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm. May Your will be done in my life; thank You for Your deliverance, and let us say...amen. (Lean to the left and drink the second cup, the Cup of Deliverance) Motzi /מוֹצ יא Matzah - Blessing Over the Matzah מ צ ה (At each table, the matzah-tash containing the three matzot is raised) (The matzah-tash is placed back on the table) (Distribute the top and broken matzot to all at the table. You may all eat the matzah) 15

(The bitter herbs are raised) Maror /מ רוֹר - Eat the Bitter Herbs 15 בּ רוּ ך א תּ ה יי א לה ינוּ, מ ל ך ה עוֹל ם,א שׁ ר ק דּ שׁ נוּ בּ מ צ וֹת יו ו צ וּ נוּ ע ל א כ יל ת מ רוֹר: C - Baruch Atah Adonai Eloheinu, Melech ha olam, asher kid shanu b mitzvotav v tzivanu al achilat maror. Blessed are You, O Lord our God, King of the universe, who has sanctified us by Your commandments and instructed us concerning the eating of bitter herbs. L - Now we dip the matzah into the bitter herb. We take enough maror on a piece of matzah to bring tears to our eyes, reminding us of the bitterness of slavery. (All eat the maror) L - Perhaps it was at this point in the Seder that Yeshua said, speaking of the one who would betray Him, It is the one to whom I give this piece of matzah after I dip it in the dish. We are told that he dipped a piece of matzah and gave it to Judas (Yochanan 13:21-27). Judas was the first to taste the bitterness of affliction, and the Adversary would now drive him towards the bitterness of death. This took place after the second cup, but before the third, and thus indicates that he (Judas) fell short of attaining his redemption. Korech /כּוֹר - Eat a Sandwich of Matzah and Maror ך L - During the days of the Temple, Rabbi Hillel the Elder used to take a piece of the Pesach lamb together with some of the bitter herbs and eat them with matzah. We no longer observe this because the lamb is not sacrificed. However, as a reminder of the mortar which our ancestors made, we have charoset, a mixture of apples, nuts, dates, and grape juice. So we take some of the charoset and bitter herbs and place them on a piece of matzah, eating them together. This is known as the Hillel Sandwich. (All eat the Hillel sandwich) (All lift up your egg portion) L - Likewise, a roasted egg has been added to the Seder, representing the chagigah, or special festival offering. Tradition also sees the egg as a reminder of the Temple s destruction. Just as we are reminded of the past, so too we look forward to the new Temple, and to Messiah s coming reign. Beginning with the egg, the full Pesach meal is served. (All eat the egg) Shulchan /שׁ Orech - Eat the Festive Meal ל ח ן עוֹר ך (The festive meal is now served and the Afikoman is hidden) 16

16 Tza fun /צ פוּן Hidden - The Afikoman is found, returned, distributed, and eaten L - Now we come to the most important part of our service. After the meal is concluded, it is customary for the children to search for the Afikoman. After it is found and returned, they are rewarded with silver redemption money. This exchange represents the redeeming power and ransom value of the Afikoman. L - The Afikoman was not part of the Pesach Seder before the Temple s destruction. In fact, the word Afikoman is not even Hebrew, it is Greek. And while it has been given many meanings, including calling it dessert, the most accurate are that which comes, He who comes, and I came. After the destruction of the Temple in 70 C.E., there could be no more sacrifices. The lamb could not be killed, and the Seder was incomplete. Therefore, the rabbis had to come up with a way to keep the commandment. This then became the role of the Afikoman. L - However, many Jewish people of the first century who believed in Yeshua as the promised Messiah were already keeping a Seder without the lamb. They had followed Yeshua s words as He observed His last meal with His disciples. He took the matzah and broke it. (Break the Afikoman and distribute to all at the table) L Look closely at the Afikoman. Being striped and pierced, Messiah s willing sacrifice on our behalf can be clearly seen. He was broken so that we could be made whole. Consuming this piece of matzah indicates that we desire to take upon ourselves the yoke of His Kingdom. Let us take a moment to reflect upon the gift of salvation, and repent of our sins. L - As we see in the ceremony relating to the Afikoman, it was broken, as Yeshua was broken. It was hidden away, as if by burial; but it was brought back to us, as Yeshua rose to life again, allowing us to share in the goodness of the Olam Haba (The World to Come), a life never again separated from God. C - Then He distributed it to all at the table saying, This represents My body which is given for you, do this in remembrance of Me. (All eat the Afikoman) 17

Meals) Barech /בּ ר - Recite Birkat ha Mazon (Grace after ך 17 L - We now fill the third cup and recite the Birkat ha Mazon, the blessing after the meal. (All fill the third cup, the Cup of Redemption) C - I will bless Adonai at all times, His praise shall continually be on my lips. With my mouth I will utter the praises of Adonai; all flesh shall bless His holy Name forever and ever. Let the Name of Adonai be praised, both now and forevermore. C - We thank You, O our God, for having given as a heritage to our fathers a precious, good and spacious land; for having brought us out, Adonai our God, from the land of Egypt and redeemed us from the house of bondage; for Your covenant which You have sealed in our flesh; for Your Word which You have taught us; for Your statutes which You have made known to us; for the life, favor and kindness which You have graciously bestowed upon us; and for the food we eat with which You feed and sustain us every day. C - For all this, Adonai, we thank You and bless You. May Your Name be blessed by the mouth of every living creature. As it is written, When you have eaten and are satisfied, you shall bless Adonai for the good land which He has given you. Blessed are You, Adonai our God, for the Land and for the food. With what we have eaten, let us be content. What we have drank, let it be health to us. What we have in abundance, may that also be used as a blessing for others. (All raise the third cup, the Cup of Redemption) L - The third cup symbolizes our salvation from Egypt. Isaiah 53 tells of a Redeemer to come, One who would make this fully possible. For the believer in Messiah Yeshua, this cup represents Messiah Yeshua s blood that was shed for our sins to bring us into the New Covenant with God. L - I will lift up the Cup of Redemption (Salvation), and proclaim the Name of Adonai. C - Yeshua took the cup after supper and gave it additional meaning when He said, Drink from it, all of you; this cup which is poured out for you is the New Covenant in My blood, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. Abba, we lift this cup and ask for Your forgiveness for relying on our own strength, for not depending upon You, and for violating Your ways. We ask that You sanctify us, deliver us, and redeem us...amen. Blessed are You, O Lord our God, King of 18 the universe, who creates the fruit of the vine. (Lean to the left and all drink the third cup, the Cup of Redemption)

18 The Suffering Servant Yesha yahu (Isaiah) Who has believed our report? And to whom has the arm of Adonai been revealed? 2. For He grew up before Him like a tender shoot, and like a root out of parched ground; He has no stately form or majesty that we should look upon Him, nor appearance that we should be attracted to Him. 3. He was despised and forsaken of men, a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief; and like one from whom men hide their face, He was despised, and we did not esteem Him. 4. Surely our griefs He Himself bore, and our sorrows He carried; yet we ourselves esteemed Him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. 5. But He was pierced through for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; the chastening for our well-being fell upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed. 6. All of us like sheep have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; but Adonai has caused the iniquity of us all to fall on Him. 7. He was oppressed and He was afflicted, yet He did not open His mouth; like a lamb that is led to slaughter, and like a sheep that is silent before its shearers, so He did not open His mouth. 8. By oppression and judgment He was taken away; and as for His generation, who considered that He was cut off out of the land of the living for the transgression of my people, to whom the stroke was due? 9. His grave was assigned with wicked men, yet He was with a rich man in His death, because He had done no violence, nor was there any deceit in His mouth. 10. But Adonai was pleased to crush Him, putting Him to grief; if He would render Himself as a guilt offering, He will see His offspring, He will prolong His days, and the good pleasure of Adonai will prosper in His hand. 11. As a result of the anguish of His soul, He will see it and be satisfied; by His knowledge the Righteous One, My Servant, will justify the many, as He will bear their iniquities. 12. Therefore, I will allot Him a portion with the great, and He will divide the booty with the strong; because He poured out Himself to death, and was numbered with the transgressors; yet He Himself bore the sin of many, and interceded for the transgressors. L - We now pour the fourth cup, the Cup of Restoration. (All pour the fourth cup, the Cup of Restoration) (The Cup of Eliyahu is poured while the following is read) L - According to the Scriptures, a prophet like Eliyahu was to come announcing Messiah s arrival. And so, not only do we have a special place set aside for him, but we fill a cup, and open the door to invite him in. Those who believe that Yeshua is the promised Messiah recognize that Yochanan ha Matbil (John the Immerser) came and proclaimed the beginning of the Messiah s earthly ministry, and that it was he of whom the prophet Isaiah spoke, saying, The voice of one crying, Clear the way for Adonai in the wilderness, make straight in the desert a highway for our God. (Yesha yahu 40:3) C - And we praise Adonai, saying: הוֹדוּ ל יי כּ י טוֹב, כּי ל עוֹל ם ח ס דּוֹ. 19 C - Hodu la Adonai ki tov, ki l olam chas do. Give thanks to the Lord for He is good, for His mercy endures forever.

: Hallel /ה ל ל Psalms Not to us, Adonai, not to us, but to Your Name give glory because of Your loving kindness, because of Your truth. Why should the nations say, Where, now, is their God? But our God is in the heavens; He does whatever He pleases. Their idols are silver and gold, the work of man's hands. They have mouths, but they cannot speak; they have eyes, but they cannot see; they have ears, but they cannot hear; they have noses, but they cannot smell; they have hands, but they cannot feel; they have feet, but they cannot walk; they cannot make a sound with their throat. Those who make them will become like them, everyone who trusts in them. O Yisra el, trust in Adonai; He is their help and their shield. O house of Aaron, trust in Adonai; He is their help and their shield. You who fear Adonai, trust in Adonai; He is their help and their shield. Adonai has been mindful of us; He will bless us; He will bless the house of Yisra el; He will bless the house of Aaron. He will bless those who fear Adonai, the small together with the great. May Adonai give you increase, you and your children. May you be blessed of Adonai, Maker of heaven and earth. The heavens are the heavens of Adonai, but the earth He has given to the sons of men. The dead do not praise Adonai, nor do any who go down into silence; but as for us, we will bless Adonai from this time forth and forever. Praise Adonai! T hillim 115 I love Adonai, because He hears my voice and my supplications. Because He has inclined His ear to me, therefore I shall call upon Him as long as I live. The cords of death encompassed me and the terrors of She ol came upon me; I found distress and sorrow. Then I called upon the Name of Adonai: O Adonai, I beseech You, save my life! Gracious is Adonai, and righteous; yes, our God is compassionate. Adonai preserves the simple; I was brought low, and He saved me. Return to your rest, O my soul, for Adonai has dealt bountifully with you. For You have rescued my soul from death, my eyes from tears, my feet from stumbling. I shall walk before Adonai in the land of the living. I believed when I said, I am greatly afflicted. I said in my alarm, All men are liars. What shall I render to the Adonai for all His benefits toward me? I shall lift up the cup of salvation and call upon the name of Adonai. I shall pay my vows to Adonai, oh may it be in the presence of all His people. Precious in the sight of Adonai is the death of His godly ones. O Adonai, surely I am Your servant, I am Your servant, the son of Your handmaid, You have loosed my bonds. To You I shall offer a sacrifice of thanksgiving, and call upon the Name of the Adonai. I shall pay my vows to Adonai, oh may it be in the presence of all His people, in the courts of the house of Adonai, in the midst of you, O Jerusalem. Praise Adonai! T hillim 116 Praise Adonai, all nations; laud Him all peoples! For His loving kindness is great toward us, and the truth of Adonai is everlasting. Praise Adonai! T hillim

20 Psalms 118, : Hallel /ה ל ל Give thanks to Adonai, for He is good; for His mercy is everlasting. O let Yisra el say, His mercy is everlasting. O let the house of Aaron say, His mercy is everlasting. O let those who fear Adonai say, His mercy is everlasting. From my distress I called upon Adonai; Adonai answered me and set me in a large place. Adonai is for me, I will not fear; what can man do to me? Adonai is for me among those who help me; therefore I will look with satisfaction on those who hate me. It is better to take refuge in Adonai than to trust in man. It is better to take refuge in Adonai than to trust in princes. All nations surrounded me; in the Name of Adonai I will surely cut them off. They surrounded me, yes, they surrounded me; in the Name of Adonai I will surely cut them off. They surrounded me like bees; they were extinguished as a fire of thorns; in the Name of Adonai I will surely cut them off. You pushed me violently so that I was falling, but Adonai helped me. Adonai is my strength and song, and He has become my salvation. The sound of joyful shouting and salvation is in the tents of the righteous; the right hand of Adonai does valiantly. The right hand of Adonai is exalted; the right hand of Adonai does valiantly. I will not die, but live, and tell of the works of Adonai. Adonai has disciplined me severely, but He has not given me over to death. Open to me the gates of righteousness; I shall enter through them, I shall give thanks to Adonai. This is the gate of Adonai; the righteous will enter through it. I shall give thanks to You, for You have answered me, and You have become my salvation. The stone which the builders rejected has become the chief corner stone. This is Adonai s doing; it is marvelous in our eyes. This is the day which Adonai has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it. O Adonai, do save, we beseech You; O Adonai, we beseech You, do send prosperity! Blessed is the one who comes in the Name of Adonai; we have blessed you from the house of Adonai. Adonai is God, and He has given us light; bind the festival sacrifice with cords to the horns of the altar. You are my God, and I give thanks to You; You are my God, I extol You. Give thanks to Adonai, for He is good; for His mercy is everlasting. T hillim 118 Give thanks to Adonai, for He is good, for His mercy is everlasting. Give thanks to the God of gods, for His mercy is everlasting. Give thanks to the Lord of lords, for His mercy is everlasting. To Him who alone does great wonders, for His mercy is everlasting. To Him who made the heavens with skill, for His mercy is everlasting. To Him who spread out the earth above the waters, for His mercy is everlasting. To Him who made the great lights, for His mercy is everlasting; the sun to rule by day, for His mercy is everlasting; the moon and stars to rule by night, for His mercy is everlasting. To Him who smote the Egyptians in their firstborn, for His mercy is everlasting, and brought Yisra el out from their midst, for His mercy is everlasting; with a strong hand and an outstretched arm, for His mercy is everlasting. To Him who divided the Red Sea asunder, for His mercy is everlasting, and made Yisra el pass through the midst of it, for His mercy is everlasting; but He overthrew Pharaoh and his army in the Red Sea, for His mercy is everlasting. To Him who led His people through the wilderness, for His mercy is everlasting. To Him who smote great kings, for His mercy is everlasting, and slew mighty kings, for His mercy is everlasting; Sihon, king of the Amorites, for His mercy is everlasting, and Og, king of Bashan, for His mercy is everlasting, and gave their Land as a heritage, for His mercy is everlasting, even a heritage to Yisra el His servant, for His mercy is everlasting; Who remembered us in our low estate, for His mercy is everlasting, and has rescued us from our adversaries, for His mercy is everlasting; Who gives food to all flesh, for His mercy is everlasting. Give thanks to the God of heaven, for His mercy is everlasting. T hillim

L - And so, we give thanks to Adonai, for His many blessings. 21 (All raise the fourth cup, the Cup of Restoration) L - The fourth cup, the Cup of Restoration, is a fitting close to the Seder service. After sanctification, deliverance, and redemption, restoration is the final step necessary in God s covenantal plan to save His people and to dwell in their midst. It was this cup that Yeshua said He would not drink from (Mt. 26:29) until He drank it with His disciples in the Kingdom. He knew that the hour of His acceptance by His people Yisra el was yet future, and therefore, His joy would not be full until then. We eagerly and joyfully await the return of Messiah, and the final restoration of Yisra el. As we do so, we recite a blessing. Interpretation of the Rabbis One Seder night, five of the greatest rabbis Rabbi Eliezer, Rabbi Yehoshua, Rabbi Elazar ben Azaryah, Rabbi Akiva, and Rabbi Tarfon were sitting in B nei Brak. All night long they told about the miracles that happened when the Jews left Egypt. They did not stop until their students came to tell them it was time for the morning prayers. Rabbi Elazar ben Azariah held that it is a mitzvah to speak every night (during Ma ariv) about the Jews leaving Egypt. He said, A miracle happened to make me look as if I were seventy years old,* yet I could not prove that we must speak every night about the Jews leaving Egypt. Then Ben Zoma proved it. The Torah states: So that you will remember the day you left Egypt all the days of your life. D varim (Deut.) 6:13 The words days of your life mean the daytime. The word all means that during all times of the day, even at night, we must speak about leaving Egypt. But the other rabbis did not agree. They said, The words days of your life mean that we speak about leaving Egypt now, before Mashiach has come. The word all means that we will still speak about leaving Egypt, even after Mashiach comes. כּ ב ן שׁ ב ע ים שׁ נ ה/ old * As if I were seventy years Rabbi Elazar ben Azariah was chosen to be the Nasi (Leader) of the Sanhedrin when he was only eighteen years old. The Sages feared that the ordinary people who did not know him would not respect such a young man. Then, a great miracle happened. Overnight, Rabbi Elazar s face aged, until he looked like an old man of seventy. At that time he said, A miracle happened to make me look as if I were seventy years old (b.berachot 27b) Rabbi Yossi Ha Glili says, How do you know that God punished the Egyptians five times as much at the Sea of Reeds as He did in Egypt and since there were ten plagues in Egypt, there must have fifty at the sea? When the Torah speaks about Egypt, it says, The magicians told Pharaoh, This plague is like God s finger. But when it speaks about the Sea, the Torah says, The Jewish people saw the great hand that HaShem laid upon Egypt, and they believed in HaShem and in His servant Moses. How many plagues did the Egyptians suffer in Egypt with HaShem s finger? Ten. If so, at the Sea (where the they were struck with a full hand of five fingers) they were struck with fifty plagues (10x5=50). Rabbi Eliezer says, How do we know that every plague that God brought on the Egyptians in Egypt had four parts? Because when the Torah speaks about the plagues, it says, God sent against the Egyptians His burning anger [this means that each plague is a kind of burning anger ; now the verse goes on, saying that this burning anger had four parts]: (1) Rage, (2) annoyance, (3) trouble, and (4) a troop of bad angels. Since each of the Ten Plagues in Egypt had four parts, it was as if the Ten Plagues were forty plagues (10 23 plagues x 4 parts = 40 plagues). And the fifty plagues at the Sea were like two hundred plagues (50 plagues x 4 parts = 200 plagues).

Pesach Observance and the Messianic Significance 23 Passover Observance: The lamb was without blemish. Messianic Significance: Yeshua was examined and found without blemish. (Mt. 21:23;27:1-2; 11-14; 17-26; Lk 3:2; Jn 11:49-53) Passover Observance: The lamb was a male of the first year. Messianic Significance: Yeshua was the firstborn Son of God. Passover Observance: The lamb was set aside for four days on the tenth of Nisan. Messianic Significance: Yeshua entered Jerusalem and the temple on public display for four days on the tenth of Nisan. Passover Observance: The penalty was imposed the moment the lamb was chosen. Messianic Significance: Yeshua received the death penalty for our sin before He was born. Passover Observance: The lamb was killed between the evenings at 3:00 p.m. Messianic Significance: Yeshua died in the sixth hour, 3:00 p.m. (Mark 15:33-37). Passover Observance: The lamb s bones were not broken (Exodus 12:46; Numbers 9:12). Messianic Significance: Yeshua s bones were not broken (Psalm 34:20; John 19:31). Passover Observance: The blood of the lamb applied to the door saved the Israelites firstborn. Messianic Significance: The blood of Yeshua saves us. Passover Observance: The body of the lamb must be eaten the same night (Exodus 12:8). Messianic Significance: Yeshua was executed, suffered, and died in the same night. Passover Observance: No work was to be done on the Passover. The Children of Yisra el could not save themselves. Even if they would have spent all the night in prayer, the destroying angel would have broken in upon them, and slain their first-born if the blood was not on the door. Messianic Significance: The blood of Yeshua saves us, not our works (I Peter 1:18-21). Pesach Remembrance Through the Scriptures Numbers 9 is the first anniversary of the Pesach. God made special alternative rules for persons unclean, or on a journey, for service to be held on the 14th of the second month. This made it possible for all to keep the feast. This chapter also outlines the penalty for disregarding the Pesach observance. Deuteronomy 16 restates the command to keep Pesach, adding the appointed location where the Temple was to be established. In Joshua 5:10-11, Pesach is renewed by Yisra el upon their entering Canaan. Ezra 6:19-20 tells of Pesach after the return from captivity. For the first time in decades Hezekiah restores the festival. The people were so moved that the festival was extended an extra seven days (2 Chronicles 30-32). 2 Kings 23 and 2 Chronicles 35 describe a restoration of Pesach by Josiah after four hundred years of interruption. Ezekiel re-instituted Pesach (Ezekiel 45:21-24). Luke 2:41-52 tells of Miriam, Yosef, and the twelve-year-old 24 Yeshua going to Jerusalem for Pesach. I Corinthians 5:7 refers to Yeshua as our Pesach Lamb. Acts 12:3 tells us that Shimon (Peter) was imprisoned at the time of Pesach.

24 Therefore you shall observe this day, throughout your generations, as an eternal statute. (Exodus 12:17b) And it shall come to pass, when your children shall say unto you, What do you mean by this service? You shall say, It is the sacrifice of Adonai s Pesach, for that he passed over the houses of the children of Yisra el in Egypt, when He smote the Egyptians, and delivered our houses. And the people bowed their heads and worshipped. (Exodus 12:26-27) A Sh ma Yisra el Publication 25
