5 Testimony about the Passover Explanation of Passover, some of the why s, how s and the what s Explanation on the Bedikath Chametz (Searching for the Leaven how, where and why) The master of the house will wash his hands and recite this prayers before the search for leaven Blessed are you, O Lord our God, king of the Universe, who has sanctified us by your commandments and commanded us to remove the leaven Prayer after the leaven is found ; All manner of leaven which is in my possession, that which I have seen as well as that which I have not seen, that which I have removed as well as that which I have not removed, is hereby annulled and accounted as the dust of the earth Prayer after burning of the Chametz

6 All leaven and unleavened bread in my possession Whether I have seen it or not, whether I have removed it or not, is hereby nullified and ownerless, as the dust of the earth. Traditions of Passover Well, I see everything is about ready. There s a customary greeting at Passover. ת נ ו ל כ ל א ל ו ש ר ע ב ים ל ב וא ל א כ ול Let all who are hungry come and eat Blessing of the Candles Baruch atah Adonai, Elohenu melech ha-olam, asher kid shanu b mitzvotav v tzivanu l hadlik ner shel yom tov. Blessed are You, O Lord our God, King of the Universe, who has set us apart by Your commandments and commanded us to light the Festival lights.

7 The Why's of the lighting the Candles for Passover Summary of the 4 cups: the cup of Sanctification, The Cup of judgment, the cup of redemption, and the cup of praise Cup Number 1 Kiddush/ The Cup of Sanctification.(The why s) & The Why s of why we recline to the Left. Baruch ata Adonai Eloheinu melech ha-olam, boray p ri ha-gafen. Blessed art Thou, O Lord our God, King of the Universe, who creates the fruit of the vine. Let s drink together the first cup of Sanctification. Urchatz (The washing of the Hands) The Why s Lets turn to john 13:1-11 Before we take the Karpas - the dipping of the Parsley in Salt Water I will now give a brief Passover summary on the items on the Seda Plate.

8 The dipping of the Parsley into the Salt Water The why s this and the why s that. Blessing which we will all recite together: Baruch atah Adonai, Elohenu melech ha-olam, borei p ri ha-adamah. Blessed are You, O Lord our God, King of the Universe, who creates the fruit of the earth. All eat the karpus The Yachutz(Breaking of the middle Matzah) The leader of the Seder takes the middle matzah and breaks into two, leaves one half between the whole ones, and wraps the other half in a linin cloth for the Afikomen Maggid P12 Retelling of the Story of Exodus: Chapter 12: 1 13

9 The Matzah s are uncovered and the leader of the Sedar lifts up the matzah and container (Unity) recites the following blessing: This is the bread of affliction which our ancestors ate in the land of Egypt; let those who are hungry, enter and eat thereof, and all who are in distress come and celebrate the Passover. At present we celebrate it here, but next year we hope to celebrate it in the land of Israel. This year we are servants, but next year we hope to be free men in the land of Israel. The four questions of more Why s Explanation on Ma Nish ta naw and sang by tonight's leader but would usually be sung by the youngest son of the family. Why is this night different from all other nights? The youngest member of the family raises 3 more questions. Why this, why that, why why why why and many whys Then there is the story of the four sons: The wise son, the wicked son, the innocent son, and the son who has no capacity to inquire.

10 The Four Questions/Ma Nish ta naw The youngest child (or any individual) asks (or sings): Why is this night different from all other nights? Ma nishtanah ha-lailah ha-zeh mi-kol ha-leilot? 1. On all other nights we eat either bread or matzah; on this night, why only matzah? 2. On all other nights we eat herbs or vegetables of any kind; on this night why bitter herbs? 3. On all other nights we do not dip even once; on this night why do we dip twice? 4. On all other nights we eat our meals in any manner; on this night why do we sit around the table together in a reclining position? The rest of the participants at the Seder answer: We were slaves to Pharaoh in Egypt, and God brought us out with a strong hand and an outstretched arm. And if God had not brought our ancestors out of Egypt, we and our children and our children s children would still be subjugated to Pharaoh in Egypt. Even if we were all old and wise and learned in Torah, we would still be commanded to tell the story of the Exodus from Egypt. And the more we talk about the Exodus from Egypt, the more praiseworthy we are.

11 Ma nishtana halayla hazeh Verse 1 Sheb'chol haleylot anu ochlin chametz, u-matza, halayla hazeh, kulo matza. Verse 2 Sheb'chol haleylot anu ochlin shear yerakot, halayla hazeh, maror. Verse 3 Shebachol haleylot ein anu matbilin afilu p'am echat halayla hazeh, sh'tei p'amim. Verse 4 Shebachol haleylot anu ochlin beyn yoshvin u-bein m'subin halayla hazeh, kulanu m'subin. Why is this night different from all other nights? On all other nights we may eat chametz and matza, but on this night, only matza. On all other nights we may eat many vegetables but on this night, bitter herbs. On all other nights, we do not dip even once, but on this night, twice. On all other nights we may eat either sitting or reclining, but on this night, we all recline

12 The Four Children The Jewish traditions describes four children who ask questions about the Exodus. Tradition teaches that these verses refer to four different types of children. The wise child asks, What are the laws that God has commanded us? The parent should answer by instructing the child in the laws of Passover, starting from the beginning and ending with the laws of the Afikomen. The wicked child asks, What does this Passover service mean to you? The parent should answer, It is because of what God did for me when I came out of Egypt. Specifically me and not you. If you had been there (with your attitude), you wouldn t have been redeemed. The simple child asks, What is this Seder service? The parent should answer, With a mighty hand God brought us out of Egypt. Therefore, we commemorate that event tonight through this Seder. And then there is child who does not know how to ask. The parent should begin a discussion with that child based on the verse: And you shall tell your child on that day, We commemorate Passover tonight.

13 The Ten plagues: We will spill a little of the wine/juice by dipping our finger and recite each of the plagues. Dam(Blood) Ts fardei a (Frogs) kinim (Vermin) Arov(Flies) Dever(Pestilance) Sh chin(boils) Barad (Hail) Arbe(Locusts) Choshech(Darkness) Makat Bechorot(Slaying the First Born)

14 English Version: If God would've taken us out of Egypt and not executed judgment upon them, it would've been enough for us Dayenu. If He would've executed judgment upon them and not upon their idols, it would've been enough for us Dayenu. If He would've judged their idols, and not killed their firstborn, it would've been enough for us Dayenu. If He would've killed their firstborn, and not given us their wealth, it would've been enough for us Dayenu. If He would've given us their wealth, and not split the sea for us, it would've been enough for us Dayenu. If He would've split the sea for us, and not let us through it on dry land, it would've been enough for us Dayenu. If He would've let us through it on dry land, and not drowned our enemies in it, it would've been enough for us Dayenu. If He would've drowned our enemies in it, and not provided for our needs in the desert for 40 years, it would've been enough for us Dayenu.

Dayenu : We would have been satisfied (Everyone to sing) 15 I lu ho tzi, ho tzi o nu, ho tzi o nu mi Mitz ra yim, ho-tzi-o-nu mi-mitz-ra-yim,da-ye-nu; I-lu ho-tzi,ho-tzi-onu,ho-tzi-o-nu mi-mitz ra-yim, ho-tzi-o-nu mi-mitz-ra-yim,daye-nu, Da-da-yenu,da-da-ye-nu-da-da-yenu-da-yenu-da ye nu Had God done nothing but save us from the land of Egypt, for that alone we should have been grateful I-lu natan natan lanu Natan lanu et ha torah Natan lanu et ha Torah Dayenu(Chorus) Had God given us nothing more than the Torah (the Law, the scripture) for that alone we should have been grateful. I-lu natan natan Lanu Natan Lanu Natan Lanu et Yeshua Natan lanu Dayenu(Chorus) God gave us Yeshua and for this we are grateful. Rabbi Gamaliel used to say, Gamaliel was a leading authority in the Sanhedrin in the mid-1st century CE He used to say He who does not speak fourth these essentials of Passover Sedar has not discharged his duty. Pesach the Paschal Lamb, Matzah, the unleavened bread, Maror the Bitter Herbs, The leader of the Seder takes hold of the Shank bone and blesses it.

16 The Paschal Lamb which our forefathers ate in the Temple times for what reason? Because the Holy One, blessed be He, spared the house of our ancestors in Egypt, as it said: You shall declare, This is the Paschal offering unto the Lord who passed over the houses of the children of Israel when He struck Egypt and spared our houses. Then the people bowed in worship. Does not the scripture say: He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; he was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth( Isaiah 53:7) Also: The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world John 1:29

17 Matzah: Lifts up the Matzah and recites This Matzah which we eat, what is the reason for it? It is because there was not enough time for our for fathers dough to rise when the Holy and Blessed One redeemed them. As the Scripture say: With the dough they had brought from Egypt, the baked cakes of unleavened bread. The dough was without yeast because they had been driven out of Egypt and did not have to prepare food for themselves. Blessing of the Maror (Bitter herbs) This Maror which we eat, what is the reason for it? It is because the Egyptians embittered the lives of our forefathers in Egypt, as the Holy Scriptures say, they made their lives bitter with hard labor, with bricks and mortar, with all kinds of works In the fields, all of this forced labor being rigorous. The bitter herbs speaks of sorrow, the persecution and the suffering of our people under the hand Pharaoh; and as horseradish brings tears to the eyes, so, also, did the great affliction of our people bring tears to their eyes. In every generation let each man look on himself as if he came fourth out of Egypt. As the Bible says:

18 Oh that day tell your son, I do this because of what the Lord did for me when I came out of Egypt. Exodus 13:8 It was not only out fathers that the Holy One, blessed be He, redeemed, but us as well did He redeem along with them. As the Bible says: But he brought us from there to bring us in and give us the land that he promised on oath to our forefathers. Deuteronomy 6:23 Likewise, we who by faith have experienced the Lord s Passover have been redeemed from the bondage of sin. In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. Romans 6:11 Raise the cup of wine: We therefore are privileged to thank, praise adore, glorify, extol, honor, bless, exalt, and reverence Hm, who wrought all the miracles for our ancestors and us: for wrought all the miracles for our ancestors and us: For he brought us fourth from bondage to freedom, from sorrow to joy, from mourning into holy days, from darkness to great light and from servitude to redemption: and therefore let us chant unto Him an new song Hallelujah! Replace the cup

19 The Hallel The praise Psalms Leader Praise the Lord. Praise, O servants of the Lord, praise the name of Lord. All Let the name of the Lord be praised both now and for evermore. Leader From the rising of the sun to the place where it sets the name of the Lord is to be praised All The lord is exalted over all the Nations, his glory above the heavens, Who is like the lord our God, the one who sits enthroned on high, who stoops down to look on the heavens and the earth. Leader He raises the poor from the dust, and lifts the needy from the ash heap; he seats them with princes, the princes of their people.

20 All He settles the barren woman in her home, as a happy mother of children. Praise the Lord. Leader When Israel came out of Egypt, the house of Jacob from a people of foreign tongue; Judah became God s sanctuary, Israel his dominion. All The sea looked, and fled: The Jordan turned back. The mountains skipped like rams, the little hills like lambs. Why was it, O sea, that fled? O Jordan, that you turned back? You mountains, that you skipped like rams; you hills, like rams? Leader Tremble, O earth, at the presence of the Lord, at the presence of the God of Jacob; Who turned the rock into a pool, the hard rock into springs of water. The second cup is raised Truly, we can say Hallelujah for the great redemption which God has wrought on our behalf; redemption at a terrific price; in Egypt the death of the firstborn; Redemption from sin, the death of God s Son. For God so loved the world that He gave His one and

21 only son that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life (John 3:16) Leader continues: Baruch atah Adonai, Elohenu melech ha-olam, borei p ri ha-gafen. Blessed are You, O Lord our God, King of the Universe, who creates the fruit of the vine. All drink together the Second cup while reclining to the left The Rachatz(The washing of Hands) Hands are washed before the meal and the following blessing is recited in unison Baruch Atah Ado-nai Elo-heinu Melech Ha-olam Asher Kid shanu B mitzvotav V tzivanu Al Nitilat Yadayim Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the Universe, who has sanctified us with His laws and commanded us to wash our hands. Motzi, Matzot (The blessing of the three Matzot) Baruch Atah Ado-nai Elo-heinu Melech Ha-olam Hamotzi Lechem Min Ha-aretz. Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the Universe, who brings bread from the earth.

22 The leader will now place container back on the table, the master of the Sedar breaks olive size pieces from the upper and middle motzahs and distributes them. A specific blessing for matzah only said on Seder night is now said: Baruch Atah Ado-nai, Elo-heinu Melech Ha-olam, Asher Kid shanu B mitzvotav V tzivanu Al Achilat matzah Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the Universe, who has sanctified us with His laws and commanded us the eating of the unleavened bread. Maror Eating of the bitter herbs A blessing is said over maror (bitter herbs usually red or white horseradish). The leader of the sedar breaks the bottom matzah into olive size pieces and dips into bitter herbs. The following blessing is recited by all: Baruch Atah Ado-nai, Elo-heinu Melech Ha-olam, Asher Kid shanu B mitzvotav V tzivanu Al Achilat Maror. Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the Universe, who has sanctified us with His laws and commanded us to eat bitter herbs.

23 All eat together of the maror The bitter herbs reminds us of the sorrow, the persecution and the suffering of our people under the hands of Pharaoh; and as horseradish brings tears to our eyes so this reminds us of the hardship our people went through. Koreich Eating of the bitter herbs and charoseth. The leader of the sedar takes two pieces from the bottom matzah and puts between them the cahroseth, in a sandwich like fashion.(it is optional to eat the charoseth with some bitter herbs.) Lets all eat the Motzah and Cahroseth As the bitter herb is a symbol of suffering, the saltwater a symbol of tears, the greens a symbol of hyssop, the wine a symbol of blood, so the charoseth is a symbol of motar, representing the clay bricks which were made by our people in Egypt. This concludes the first portion of a Passover. We now eat the Shulchan Oreich The Passover Supper

24 Tzaphun (eating of the aficomen) The afikomen ("that which comes after )is our substitute for the Paschal lamb, which in days of old, was the final food of the Seda feast Children would leave the room and the afikoman is hidden.the children search for the afikomen. The leader redeems it by giving the child a coin but today a gift. The matzah is broken and distributed, in olive size pieces, to each of the guests. The Birkat Hamazon (The blessing after the meal) Leader: Let us say the blessing for our food. Response: Blessed be the name of the Lord from now unto eternity. Leader: Let us bless our God of whose gifts we have eaten. Response & Leader: Blessed be (our God) of whose bounty we have eaten and through whose goodness we live. All together: Blessed be He and blessed be His name

25 Explanation of the breaking of the middle Matzah. The breaking of the middle matzah and the wrapping of the middle matzah and the hiding it away represents death. Death is separation. Physical death is separation of the material part of man from the immaterial, the flesh from the soul and the spirit. Spiritual death is eternal separation from God. The Bible tells us that the wages of sin is death that it was through Adam that death came upon mankind. As long as the matzah remained hidden it symbolised that death reigned. But when the broken matzah was found and returned it symbolised life and resurrection. It is written in proverbs, Who has gone up to heaven and come down? Who has gathered up the wind in the hollow of his hands? Who has wrapped up the waters in his cloak? Who has established all of the ends of the earth? What is his name and the name of his son? Tell me if you know (Prov 30:4)

26 Remember, the Matzah is unleavened, it is stripped and it is pierced. Even so the Messiah was unleavened; that is, sinless. Even so the Messiah was striped; that is, by way of the Roman whip. Even so the Messiah was pierced; that is by the nails in His hands and His feet, and by the spear in His side. If you are a believer in the Messiah, you can eat this piece as in a communion service, reminding yourself of what happened in the upper room at the last Supper. Also, as we eat this Matzah it will remind us of what the Messiah did for us in that He came and gave Himself for our sins.

27 Concerning the afikomen, it is written: And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, This is my body given it to them, for you in remembrance of me All eat the Afikomen We now come to the third Cup. The Ha Geulah (The cup of redemption) Luke 22:19 The third cup is filled and elevated and the leader of the Seder begins. This cup represents the third "I will - I will redeem you. This is God s promise that He would redeem His people from slavery, meaning He would buy them back. It is this cup after the supper in the upper Room which Jesus raised and stated: This cup is the new covenant in my blood which is poured out for you ( Luke 22:20). This cup that represents the New Covenant is the cup of Redemption. It is the cup after the supper which our Messiah used to symbolize His death. Because we know it is the Cup of redemption (the cup after the supper), we know that it was the Afikomen that which comes later, He used to symbolize His death and resurrection. The scriptures tells us that without the shedding of blood

28 there can be no remission of sin(cf.heb.9:22). The scripture further states that the life of flesh is in the blood (cf.lev.17:11). In Messiah s death God did not just cover sin. He took sin away. Anyone who accepts Him as their Lord and saviour has passed from death unto life. God has forgiven their sins. He has cleansed them from all unrighteousness. Our Messiah came, He died, shedding His blood, even as the Passover Lamb of old, to provide for all who will place their faith and trust in Him, redemption from sin. The 3rd cup Ha Geulah Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the Universe, who creates the fruit of the vine. Baruch Atah Ado-nai Elo-heinu Melech Ha-olam Boreh Pree Haga-fen. Let us drink the 3rd cup of redemption for those who believe in Yeshua as there saviour reclining to the left. Elijah s cup is filled with wine and the door is opened. You will note that one place setting has not been touched throughout the meal. This is the traditional place for Elijah. The door is opened to see if the prophet Elijah will come, - John, the baptiser, who Jesus spoke of as the forerunner

29 of Himself, was indeed the prophet Elijah had he been accepted by his people. It was the same John who looked upon Jesus and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God, which takes away the sin of the world. For, behold, the day cometh, that shall burn as an oven; and... all that do wickedly, shall be stubble: and the day that cometh shall burn them up, saith the LORD of hosts, that it shall leave them neither root nor branch... And ye shall tread down the wicked; for they shall be ashes under the soles of your feet in the day that I shall do [this], saith the LORD of hosts... Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD" -Malachi 4:1-5 And so this is why from generation to generation Jewish people have been opening their door after the 3rd cup of redemption to await the coming of Messiah. And sadly as many Jewish people have not accepted their Messiah, year after year we open the door to expect the long awaited coming of the Anointed One. Door is closed This is a typical song which is sung as a lament and a longing for the Messiah Éliyahu Hanavi א ל י ה ו ה נ ב יא, א ל י ה ו ה ת ש ב י, א ל י ה ו ה ג ל ע ד י ב מ ה ר ה י ב וא א ל ינ ו ע ם מ ש יח ב ן ד ו ד Eliyahu Hanavie, Eliyahu Hatishbi, Elyahu Hagiladi, Bimherah Yavo Elenu Im Mashiach Ben David. Elijah the prophet, Elijah the Tishbite, Elijah the Gilead may he soon come to us with the Messiah son of David.

30 You will note some items on the Sedar plate which have not been toched. One, the Betzah, or roasted egg; and two shank bones of the Lamb. The roasted egg speaks of sacrifice, which can no longer be made because the Temple was destroyed in about 70 AD. It is not strange that an egg is used to represent sacrifice? But one must remember that sacrifice not only means death; it also means life. The shankbone of the Lamb is untouched, because lambs are no longer sacrificed. As believers in the Messiah, we recognise that sacrifice is no longer necessary, because the death of our Messiah satisfied the need for sacrifice. In his death there is life. In the shedding of His blood there is remission of sin. Hallel The final cup of praise Fill the fourth cup and recite Leader The Lord has remembered us, He will bless us, He will bless the house of Israel, He will bless the house of Aeron. He will bless those who revere the Lord, the small as well as the great: May the Lord increase you, more and more, you and your children. You are blessed of the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth. The heavens are the heavens of the Lord, but the earth has He given to the children of men. The dead praise not the Lord nor do they who descend into the silent grave. But we will bless the Lord from henceforth until evermore. Hallelujah

31 All Praise the Lord, all you nations; praise Him, all you people; for His mercy prevails over us, and the truth of the Lord endures for ever. Hallelujah Leader I will praise you, for you have answered me and become my deliverance. The stone which the builders rejected, has become the chief cornerstone. This has proceeded from the Lord, it is marvellous in our eyes. This is the day which the Lord has appointed, we will rejoice and be glad in it. All Blessed be he who comes in the name of the Lord we bless you from the house of the Lord. The Lord is God, and it is He who granted us light. Bring sacrifice bound with myrtles to the horns of the alter. Leader You are my God, and I will praise you! O my God, I will extol you. Give thanks to the Lord for He is good and His mercy endures forever. The leader of the Seder continues: We come to the fourth and last drinking of the cup. This cup represents the fourth I will - I will take you to Me for a people. This speaks of the time when the Lord will gather Israel again in the Lord. To a believer in the Messiah this cup also represents

32 the great hope that someday the Messiah is coming back to take up His followers to be with Him. It is written: For the Lord Himself will come down from Heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up with then in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. (1 Thess.4:16 17) Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the Universe, who creates the fruit of the vine. Baruch Atah Ado-nai Elo-heinu Melech Ha-olam Boreh Pree Ha-gafen. Drink the fourth cup recite in unison Blessed are you, O Lord our God, king of the universe, for the wine and for the fruit of the vine, and for produce of the field and for that desirable, good and spacious land which you granted our ancestors to inherit, to eat of its fruit, and be satisfied with its goodness. Have compassion, O Lord our God, upon us, on Israel your people, upon Jerusalem, your city, on Zion, the residence of your glory, and upon the alter and your temple; rebuild Jerusalem, your holy city, speedily in our days. (On Sabbath add: Be gracious to us and give us strength)

cheer us on this day of the feast of unleavened bread, for you, O Lord our God, are good and beneficent to all, and therefore do we give thanks to you for the land, and for the fruit of the vine. Blessed are you, O Lord for the land and for the fruit of the vine. Closing Section 33 A typical Jewish Haggadah would conclude the official part of the Seder with a final prayer asking God to: bring the Messianic Era, when all will be gathered to Jerusalem as all humankind dwells in peace. The Next Year in Jerusalem is because the Jewish people hope that the Messiah will come and will draw His people to the land of Promise. We as Messianic Jews and believers in Yeshua /Jesus can already rejoice as we know if we have Yeshua as our saviour that He is the promised Messiah, the fulfilment of the Law, the redeemer of both Jew and gentile. He is the true vine. So this teaching on the Lord s Passover is now complete, even as our salvation and redemption are complete. Just as we were privileged to celebrate it this year, so may we be privileged to do so in the future.

34 O, Pure One, Who dwells on high, restore your numberless congregation ; speedily lead the shoots of the garden you have planted, redeemed, joyfully to Zion In Unision Next Year in Jerusalem!!
