2 Rabb Reacts The congregaton s now 100 years old, but the Temple cemetery s even a few years older. It "began" before they founded the Temple and wll probably be around "after" as well. It's on Addson, just west of Narragansett (6600 West), and east of Rosemont Cemetery. It's called Mt. B'na Jehoshua and we share the area wth KAM-Isaah Israel and B'na B'rth, though we have our own defned boundares. I lke Mt. B'na Jehoshua. My parents and grandparents are bured there and one day me too. I lke to go there and see the stones, and remember people. I put pebbles on our famly markers and the markers of other specal frends. I know that some people say they "don't get anythng", out of vstng cemeteres. Stuart Smalley would say, "... and that's... O.K." And t s, as long as t doesn't mean t's too nconvenent or that you don't want to consder your own mortalty. I'm not completely sure what I "get from t", except that t makes me feel anchored. And when nobody else s around I also "report n" on news of the famly. It's an old-fashoned cemetery wth marker-stones of varous szes and shapes. It doesn't look lke Shalom Cemetery's parklke expanse, but I lke cemeteres to look lke cemeteres. It's well-tended and feels peaceful. The surroundng neghborhood s a hotbed of Cub fans, but ex-south sders can't have everythng. Each year I take the 3rd graders on a feld trp to the cemetery and tell them stores about the people who are bured there. Between Rosh Hashana and Yorn Kppur we hold an nformal Sunday afternoon memoral servce there. Not many of the old-tmers are left to come, but a few of today's members are startng to show up. You don't have to thnk about cemeteres and cemetery plots f you don't want to. But when you do, thnk about Mt. B'na Joshua. There's room, t wll always be there, and Jewsh kds and ther famles go there to vst at least once a year. Sncerely, Mark S. Shapro P.S. It lterally means "separaton," and thus s meant to concretze the transton from Shabbat (a day of "tme-out" from daly concerns) to the new work week The ceremony s desgned to ease ths transton by gvng us a concentrated taste of Shabbat to last us through t11e week and remnd us that Shabbat wll return. Havdalah reles heavly on sngng, dramatc lghtng. and the senses. J'~ 11dded 11ttractons 1. The Ceremony Candle-lghtng m A We end Shabbat wth candle-lghtng, just as we began t. However, the Havdalah candle s unque one thck, twsted candle wth three or more separate wcks. The three wcks burn together to make a very brght flame. Ths remnds us that when we work together, we all beneft. There s a tradton that the youngest person present hold the candle. You may want to provde a plate underneath for wax drps. The rtual of havdalah begns wth lghtng the Havdalah candle. Agan, ths evokes n us the feelng of Shabbat, wth the lght of the candle dancng over the table. Often people hold ther hand up to the flame as they recte the followng blessng, palm nward and fngers curled. Some say that ths s done smply to observe the play of lght and shadow on your hand. Ths Is a lovely tme for sngng, sharng thoughts on the week to come or the Shabbat that has passed - stretchng the moment a lttle farther. 2. Crafts ~! Spce Box The purpose of a spce box s to provde a pleasant smell. It can be as smple (and effectve) as an orange stuck wth whole cloves or a bouqet of flowers from your garden. If you are ready to work a lttle harder than that. take any small open contaner (a paper cup, metallc cupcake wrapper, etc.) Decorate the outsde (usng markers, stckers, colored glue, rc rac, etc.). Fll the contaner wth your chosen spces, and cover. You can use nettng. colored celaphane. a doly, etc.. secured wth a rbbon or rubber band. If you would lke to create a more permanent spce box, use ths as an excuse to take a pottery class, and create a small jar wth holes n the cover. You could also buy a tn Kddush cup and cover t as descrbed above. I Havdalah Candle A There are several ways to go about creatng your own candle. The frst s to soften three thn candles (lke Chanuka candles) In warm water and twst them together. The second way s to melt peces of Crayola crayons n a tn can placed n a pot of hot water. Once the crayons are melted. pour (wth extreme cauton) the contents nto a long, thn box (lke one a necklace would be wrapped n) lned wth tn fol. Insert three wcks (avalable at a crafts store) and let cool. Ths dea s the branchld of Gary Rskn. a teacher n our school The thrd way to make a Havdalah r.andle Is to dp three candles and twst them whle stll hot. See a crafts store for detals on dppng candles. Ths endng reflects the belef that the Messah wll be a descendant of Kng Davd, who n turn s descended from Ruth. Ruth, who we know from the Book of Ruth and story of Shavuot, converted to Judasm. Ths remnds us to value the contrbutons of both men and women to makng the world a better place. It also remnds us that once a person converts to Judasm, they and ther descendants are fully "kosher" Jews. capable of producng the Messah' We need Ellahu - we need hope for a better tme - as we prepare to reenter our dally lves. Havdalah remnds us that we carry the seed of Shabbat, the taste of a Messanc Age. wthn us. On Shabbat we recharge our batteres, through study. relaxaton. famly tme. Durng the work week, we should use that energy to better ourselves and the world around us. And on a lghter note, the rtual objects (or t7"1' '": kla kodesh) whch are used for Havdalah are beautful. Consder purchasng a set, as an addton to your famly's Jewsh "utensls." Most holydays end at sunset. Shabbat ends when three stars are seen, to stretch the joy.

5 Presdent's Comer When one becomes a member of the staff at the Whte House or Buckngham Palace, upon termnaton of the relatonshp, one must sgn an agreement not to share any secrets learned whle on staff. However, no such waver s sgned when a member leaves the BJBE chor. So as a former member of that group, I shall now attempt to tell you how they get to be as good as they are. Months before the Hgh Holyday perod, chor drector/ organst Elane Sherman consults wth Rabb Shapro and Hasha Musha Perman In order to select whch musc wll be used. New peces are ordered, some old works reordered. Then a tme-comsumng task of collatng all the musc Is begun, resultng In a thck notebook contanng musc for Sellchot, Rosh Hashanah, and Yorn Klppur for each chor member. On a Tuesday nght at 7:30 pm, about ten weeks before Sellchot, the chor assembles for the frst tme. New musc must be learned and famlar peces revewed and refned. The two hour rehearsal perod Is ntense. Many members do not read musc and so learn by rote. Those who can read musc seem to demand of themselves nstant perfecton. Both subgroups requre the expertse of Elane Sherman who gudes and nurtures, teaches and leads, brngng to the experence not only her professonal acumen but her respect for the lturgy. Lke any other ensemble, the BJBE chor s only as good as the sum of ts parts. Knowng that, chor members spend tme at home revewng the musc and/ or the lyrcs, knowng there Is seldom tme durng a rehearsal for prvate tutorng, as t were. Of course Elane Is always there for those who are unsure of ther musc, often tapng a secton for a chor member who wants extra help to get t rght. Each secton Is lke a squad on a football team, pullng frst for ts own secton to be on target, knowng the Impact ths has on the success of the ensemble. Unlke many synagogue chors, the BJBE chor s made up of all volunteers. Therefore, except for the musc of the cantoral solost, all solos, duets and quartets are handled by fellow congregants, many of whom are veteran performers of a partcular pece. (When they were younger, my chldren referred to Molly Skebelsky as "the Shema Koleynu lady" and to Elane Herz as "the Zochreynyu lady". They stll do!) The combnaton of famlar melodes sung by famlar voces contrbutes so much to the warmth of our Hgh Holyday experence. Members of our chor are not able to share the famly experence that for many of us Is such an mportant part of the Hgh Holydays. They do not have the luxury of a relaxng, relatvely unrushed yom tov meal. No matter who does the cookng or at what tme the meal occurs, chor members are lookng at ther watches, knowng that they must arrve at the synagogue an hour before servces In order to revew the musc for that servce. When you agree to sng n the chor, you forfet the opportunty to st close to and worshp wth members of your famly. The squeeze of a hand of a loved one Isn't possble nor the mmedate kss as the servce ends. In addton, when they are seated on the bma, they have lttle opportunty to become Immersed In worshp, for a chor member must be ever mndful of the next melody to be sung. The longeset perod allowed to them Is durng the rabb's sermons, but even then they must be on alert, ready to sng the anthem Immedately thereafter. There are a lot of sacrfces made by those In our chor. So why do they do It? Probably because they know that the Talmud says, "Our Rabbs taught: Do not stand up to pray In a morose sprt, nor In a mood of rbaldry, frvolty, levty, or In Idle chatter, but only In the joy of the Mtzvah." For ther fulflllment of the Mltzvah, we are all grateful.
