Thank you to all who contributed. We look forward to seeing you on Sunday as we read the Mazal Tov To everyone who has ever had a bris, simchat bat, bar mitzvah, bat mitzvah and/or wedding.

2 of 16 2/22/2013 9:59 AM Megillah together and join together for this wonderful chag. Shabbat Shalom & Purim Sameach! Rabbi Binyamin Krauss ACADEMY NEWS Breaking News! Fi h grade parents under inves ga on as NYC Project comes under scru ny. The NYC Project. A long established SAR Tradi on where 5th grade students build replicas of famous NYC landmarks...or do they? Asking to remain anonymous, past and current parents have admi ed to building, designing and decora ng their 5th graders projects. Said one, My kid can t cut straight let alone build a replica of the Empire State Building...what other choice was there??? Another parent agreed saying, One kid built the Roosevelt Island Tram with WORKING cable cars--i couldn t just let my kid make a paper towel roll tower! (These photos were sent to Chadashout by an unnamed source) 5th grade teachers had a mixed response. Said one senior teacher, I can t believe it took so long for the secret to get out! said another teacher I am in shock. I thought

3 of 16 2/22/2013 9:59 AM our 5th grade kids were so talented. I have been wri ng recommenda ons to Cooper Union for years. It is not yet clear what ac ons will be taken by the administra on, although we have been informed by a source close to the board of trustees that some of the parents have already been contacted to serve on the building commi ee. SAR to build addition to Academy In related news, the Lego and the Mishkan enrichment cluster has been so successful in building a replica of the Mishkan that the SAR Board of Trustees has presented them with the unique opportunity to build an addi on to the academy made completely out of Lego. Said one board member, Baruch hashem, we are running out of space in the Academy. We thought this would be a great way to expand the school. It is low cost, green and colorful. SAR is keeping costs down in a very brilliant way. SAR families can do just what B'nei Yisrael did in the desert! We are hoping that SAR families will help in building the new addi on. If you have any spare pieces of Lego to donate, please bring it to Chavie. Just like in the REAL Mishkan it does not ma er how much you donate, but we hope you will be a part of our awesome project. What s in a Name? SAR s reputa on for encouraging students to use inven ve spelling (and grammar)

4 of 16 2/22/2013 9:59 AM seems to have resulted in some issues pronouncing the name of our school. SAR with no dashes, dots, or spaces, has many people in the community calling our school Sar (pronounced SAAAR). This was seen most recently at the Annual Dinner, during a video gree ng by Jerusalem mayor, Nir Barkat where he wished his good friends at Sar a wonderful dinner and con nued success. Sigh. English teachers throughout the school have been called upon to rec fy this situa on. Here are a few sugges ons -Use slashes like in the old SAR logo. -Change our name to Sar. Everyone pronounces it "Sar" anyway and it is so similar to the Sars Virus that we are bound to come up higher in a google search! -Keep SAR but change the school to a Search And Rescue opera on. -Keep SAR but spell it ESSAYYAR. If you have any other sugges ons, please send them to: whaddayathink@gmail.com A Tree Grows in SAR Who says money doesn t grow on trees?

5 of 16 2/22/2013 9:59 AM It s a miracle! said Heidi Greenbaum, Director of Development. It must be from all of our children s kedusha. remarked Morah Sarah. Zeh mamash meshuga!, said Gili. Even Rabbi Krauss could not find an app to explain such an occurrence. Whatever your take on it, one thing seems to be true. The tree in the atrium which was part of a Tu B shvat project has not only begun to bloom it is growing money! According to Ms. Greenbaum the development team has no more work to do and the capital campaign and Shavuot appeal will not be needed. It s unbelievable. She said, The money is growing faster than we can pick it. When asked what would be done if the tree ever stops producing dollars, Nick says he ll just plant it outside near the Aleph. (Editor's note: This ar cle is a joke ar cle wri en expressly for the Purim Chadashot. If you would like to make a dona on please go to ) LATE BREAKING NEWS! BUS STRIKE ENDS! By: Chavie Wilner & Jen Sokol

6 of 16 2/22/2013 9:59 AM A special thank you to the New York City Bus Drivers Union and to SAR parents from the SAR Dismissal Staff for: -Showing us how many lanes we can fit in our driveway. -Allowing us to learn the model and make of your cars. -Le ng us get some exercise as we trudged up the driveway and slid down the driveway in the ice, snow and rain. -All the compliments you gave us on our rain gear. -Showing us how many cars we can actually fit in our driveway. -Helping us to get to know your children's si ers, grandparents, taxi drivers. -Le ng us start the immensely popular new a er school ac vity called "A er Care During the Strike". -Giving us me in the fresh air while we waited for parents who came at 6:00 pm to avoid the wait in the carpool line. "TURVY-TOPSY DAY" DESIRES - by Rabbi Gevirtz In observance of Topsy-Turvy Day--which commemorates the switching of prospects for Shushan's Jews from tragic to triumphant--we present the following wishes for changes expressed by random SAR inhabitants. SHAI KAI MYERS (SAR Student)--To switch the dates of big snowstorms from right before vaca on to right in the middle of the school week. MRS. MYERS (SAR Parent)--To switch School Snow Days to School Go Days so Shai won't stay home figh ng with his siblings. RABBI BINYAMIN KRAUSS (SAR Principal)--Instead of having to travel regularly to Israel to visit my family, to have the whole SAR family make aliyah so I can be

7 of 16 2/22/2013 9:59 AM principal in Israel. DEBRA MAY (SAR Execu ve Director)--To have SAR parents storming the business office demanding steep rises in tui on. MORAH SHARON (SAR Teacher)--To supplement "Enrichment Clusters" for students with "Enrichment Bonus Paychecks" for teachers. SHIM CRAIMER (SAR Music Director)--To switch record contracts with One Direc on. GILAD MOR (Security Director, Traffic Cop, etc. etc.)--to avoid hours of gridlock in SAR car lanes by having parents pick students up at dismissal in helicopters. ERAN GINZBERG (SAR Culinary Expert)--To win the big prize on "Top Chef" and have everyone serve me breakfast, lunch, and dinner in bed. NICK FADDA (Head of SAR Facili es and Grounds)--To take off a weekend from repairing the SAR buidling for a private gig restoring the Superbowl ligh ng system, at $100 a fixed bulb. J.K. ROWLING (Famous Author on a Book Tour)--Instead of having Rabbi Rosenberg holding a Harry Po er Night, to have Harry Po er host a Rabbi Rosenberg Night SYLVIA BURIAN ("Chadashot" editor)--to convince everyone that "No News is Good News" and then take a nice long vaca on. Purim at 30,000 Feet By Rabbi Moshe Rosenberg

8 of 16 2/22/2013 9:59 AM Driving to school can get hilly But make sure that you don't get silly No cutting the line And honking ain't fine So says the ubiquitous Gili. Keeping us safe with all of his wiles And filming our most precious smiles His secret, he said, While nodding his head: Marriage at 6000 miles. He lives all alone in a house Staying ready our fires to douse El Al's super buyer SAR's frequent flyer Except for some guy who's named Krauss... Now the two of them charter a plane Fly to Israel by way of Spain They plot fire drills In Judean Hills Their schedule is a real pain! While flying at 30K feet, They text and seat to seat Hatching a plot And choosing a spot To make their joint dream complete Allowing their eyes to feast On blue prints of buildings just leased Where in only a jiffy Looking real spiffy Will stand the new SAR East!

9 of 16 2/22/2013 9:59 AM The reason for all of these flights Inordinate time at such heights It wasn t the wife Or family strife But how to spend faculty nights When operating on all thrusters And growing like gangbusters You ll need new staff Now don t you laugh Introducing International Clusters! Overheard RBK: So, I hear their 8 th grade goalie is the best in the league. JB : Can we get him for the high school? RTH: Not so fast. Is he willing to be a part of the Grand Conversa on? QUESTION OF THE WEEK: V'nahafochu! If you could go back in time and be a student in SAR academy today, what grade would you be in and why?

10 of 16 2/22/2013 9:59 AM PURIM TOP TEN The Top Ten Reasons Purim is the Best Holiday! 10. Making noise in shul is a MITZVAH!! 9. Mishloach Manot Candy! 8. Nobody knows if you're having a bad hair day. You can tell them it's your costume 7. Purim is easier to spell than Chanukah, I mean Hanukkah, I mean, Khanukah, I mean Chanuka, I mean the Festival of Lights. 6. You don't have to kasher your home and change all the pots and dishes. 5. You don't have to build a hut and live and eat outside. 4. You can finally drive to Shul. 3. You won't get hit in the eye by a lulav. 2. Hey, you can't eat hamantaschen on Yom Kippur. And the #1 reason Purim is the best holiday is Jews 1; Haman - 0!!!! "8th grade, because they're the cool kids!"- Chavi Wilner PICTURE OF THE WEEK

11 of 16 2/22/2013 9:59 AM "1st grade, because I never had a siddur play."- Rabbi Krauss DVAR TORAH Purim D'var Torah by: Dennis (our security guard) (Not really. Borrowed from an online D'var Torah by Eliezer Wolfson) In looking at the characters of Mordechai and Esther it is interes ng to see the great influence one s middot have over one s ac ons and personality. We see how good character and good self-esteem can build and give meaning to life while the opposite is also true, that a flawed character, someone who refuses to work on his faulty middot will ul mately self-destruct. When Mordechai refuses to bow to Haman, Haman is filled with anger (3:5). It is interes ng to note that Haman had been promoted to viceroy over the en re civilized world (according to one opinion in the Gemara) and despite this when one li le Jew refuses to bow, his world falls apart. This is a sad but common symptom of those who

12 of 16 2/22/2013 9:59 AM have very big egos. Haman s great ego is shown again when Achashverosh asks Haman for an idea of what to do to somebody that the king wants to honor. (6:6). In Haman s mind there is nobody else deserving of honor in the whole world. On the other hand, Esther is the epitome of modesty, someone possessing good self-esteem and perfec on of character. Another special middah we see in Esther is at the end of Chapter 2. When Mordechai thwarts Bigtan and Teresh s plan, Esther reports this to the king- And Esther says to the king in the name of Mordechai. This willingness to forego great honor and fame for saving the king s life, by repor ng the ma er over in Mordechai s name, we are told in Pirkei Avot brings redemp on to the world. Modesty and an ability to forego the desire for honor and pres ge is the pre-requisite for peace and harmony. We are also told how Esther doesn t divulge her origins to Achashverosh. The Gemara tells us that this ability not to be a tell all to have modesty and not to be compelled to show off all we are and what we do. We can see from the Purim story how one s good middot can influence not only their lives, but the lives of an en re na on. Happy Purim!
