1 COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER February 2015 The Executive Director Most of you know Rabbi Harry Roth from the monthly Yiddish Sessions he has been offering our residents for the past several years, or remember him from the time he and Lillian, his wife, lived here as residents. Rabbi Roth has continued his Yiddish Sessions at Vintage Westwood even after their move out of our community, because of Lillian s increased care needs. According to him, the last session on January 19, 2015 was the beginning of the fifth year of offering the Yiddish sessions at our community. Rabbi Roth recently shared with me the history and the meaning of the sculpture which stands in the flower bed in front of our building, and we both thought that this bit of information may be of interest to all residents, families and friends of our community. According to Rabbi Roth this sculpture is created by an artist named Marilyn Simon and depicts the Biblical words spoken at the time of creation. The two words read in Hebrew Y Hee Ohr, in English, Let There Be Light. The first of the five books of the Torah is the Book of Genesis. Genesis begins with the description of the earth being unformed and void and darkness over the surface. This is followed by the first command at the time of creation, Y Hee Ohr, Let There Be Light. These two words are spoken in chapter one, verse three (1:3) and the universe is blessed with LIGHT. With this command the first day of creation came in to being. I thank Rabbi Roth for sharing this information with us and for the many years of enjoyable and informative Yiddish lessons he has been offering our residents. Thank you, Rabbi Roth. On a separate note, this month we will celebrate Saint Valentine s Day on February 14 th with live entertainment, and Valentine's dinner. I wish all of you a Valentine s Day filled with love! Ferri Fathi I was born in Virginia I am familiar with Latin, Greek, French, Spanish and Italian, in addition to English I was an avid reader and owned thousands of books I nearly doubled the nation s size in my presidential terms We look forward to creating new memories together! 2 Al Shemano Al, was born and raised in San Francisco, California. He spent the majority of his life in Northern California. He met and married his wife, Bernice, and moved to Sacramento. After twenty years of marriage, Al and Bernice decided to go their separate ways but still maintained a friendly relationship. Al has two children. His daughter Hannah lives in Michigan. He visits her once each year and makes certain that it is not during the cold winter. His son, David, is a successful lawyer and a partner at a prestigious law firm in Los Angeles. He encouraged Al s move to Los Angeles, and specifically here at Vintage Westwood because he lives nearby. David comes to pick up Al every Saturday so that they can spend time together. In Al s younger years, he was an amateur boxer winning many Golden Glove matches. He claims to have won every one of his boxing matches, except one. Al was also in the United States Navy. He served for a little more than four years and had the opportunity to travel around the world. In addition, Al went to barber school and owned his own barber shop, Shemano s. In the past, Al was a referee for basketball at a community center in Northern California. At present, he still finds pleasure in watching the Los Angeles Clippers play basketball. Al s biggest accomplishments include raising his two beautiful children and being endowed with a very prestigious award, the Rabbi Akiva Award, for his work with a Jewish Organization; where he was in charge of conducting the morning and evening services. A big Thank You to the following residents who Volunteered as Hospitality Ambassadors. Claire Frank Bob Lezin Ruth Frank Gil Silverman Ilene & Reuben Swartz Joe Byers Ruth Stamler Jane Mombach Vintage Residents are invited and encouraged to attend our Resident Council Meetings This is a good time to get to know your new neighbors and discuss what you think works well and what you would like to see improved. Every voice and comment is valued! Please join us at our next meeting: Monday, March 9th at 2:00 PM in the Clubhouse

6 Thinking Green Can Improve Your Health! How many times have you decided to drive your car to an appointment when it would have been just as easy to walk? Driving a car is the most air polluting act an average citizen commits. The right ideas for remediation of air pollution involve unselfish and compassionate behavior, a scarce commodity. Without a healthy natural environment, there will be few or no healthy humans. Walking instead of driving not only helps to make our air safer to breathe it also provides aerobic benefit to our bodies. Some of those benefits are: Reduce blood pressure. Increase lung capacity. Reduce total cholesterol. Reduce LDL cholesterol. Increase HDL cholesterol. Prevent diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. Reduce fat weight. Improve metabolism. Improve coordination. Rebecca Wackler is an ACSM We thank Rafael Puig Honest and Hard Working Many of you have probably not had the opportunity to meet some of the staff that works in the kitchen so let me introduce you to Rafael Puig. Rafael became a part of our Vintage Westwood family in May of He takes a lot of pride keeping the dishes and the kitchen clean and tidy. But what is so appealing about Rafael is his honesty. We had received a letter from a young lady who while running errands in the village lost her wallet which contained her Drivers license as well as credit cards. Lucky for her, Rafael found her wallet and gave it to the front desk team. They called the owner of the wallet and she was so happy that she sent a letter to us commending Rafael for turning in the lost wallet. It is with great pleasure that we give the February, Above and Beyond award to Rafael Puig. Please be our guest at the February, Birthday Dinner Thursday, February 12, 2015 in the Dining Room Nathan Zelmanowitz Joe Byers Margaret Geller Robert Tuchin Sara Stuhl Mildred Bierman Thank You for sponsoring our and Birthday Ping Pong Club For more information Call (424) (818) Dorothy Altshuler Ruth Greenspan Harold Weiss Myrna Weingarten Jean Small Shirll Lerner Annette Pizer
