1 The Bulletin Adat Chaim s News Source 1 July 2013 Owings Mills, Maryland Tammuz/Av 5773 From The Presidents Desk I want to thank the congregants for the strong showing at this year s annual congregational meeting. For those who were on summer vacation or had other commitments, allow me to share the news. Financial Aspects: Over the 25 plus year history of our organization this year s membership level has returned to that experienced in While understandable in light of the amount of change our organization has gone through, there is a plan to reverse this trend. Our organization in the past has had building funds and other active fund raising which had boosted overall receipts. In early 2000 it Adat Chaim saw a tremendous explosion of revenues in all areas and should be a reminder of what is possible with the retention of charismatic, spiritual leadership. It is noteworthy to observe that our organization has lowered the cost of physical operations, including building costs, maintenance, utilities and insurance which puts us at a unique advantage with those of much larger operations and still larger legacy expenses. Social and Fund Raising Activities: The past year was focused on moving our organization and establishing ourselves at our new location. There was little opportunity support social activities at the level that had been done in the past. We do recognize that social activities are a key aspect of synagogue life. To this end Lynn Ruddie has been working on securing some activities and presented ideas at the congregational meeting, which were warmly received by those in attendance. These will be rolled out in the months ahead. We understand that fund raising activities must be a community focus not just a member focus. This will be a high priority of our fiscal 2014 plan. Survey: The results of the survey were discussed at the meeting and provided key insight on what members are looking for to enhance the Adat Chaim experience. As in any survey, there is going to be diverse views represented, and as an egalitarian, conservative synagogue, we need to follow a middle path. Our best and highest hope can be achieved by being receptive. We can achieve what we set out to do if we put our will and energy to a conviction. If we let ourselves get caught up in gossip and low expectation our minds will surely deliver. Throughout history, the teachings of our sages tell is that Judaism and our faith are filled with endurance, belief and the ability to triumph over the odds. Let s live up to the highest goals and highest achievement. Art President Adat Chaim

7 Reminiscing by Alvin Bober July is a special month. It s vacation time. My family didn t believe in summer camps. Therefore, each July I would take one vacation day a week. Baltimore is in a marvelous geographical area. There are many historic and fun places to visit in one day. I would encourage my gang to select a place to visit each week. They did this with utmost zeal. For example, Virginia was the place to visit former Presidents homes. Washington, Madison, Monroe and Jefferson are four we visited. Mount Vernon was a place where we spent many happy hours. The Plantation is a beautiful estate in a magnificent countryside. Mount Vernon is a real working farm. The fields still grow food and feed. Slaves were the key to its successful 18 th century operation. Yes, the Father of Our Country owned slaves. Slaves were the modus operandi. I m sure he was a fair owner. The mansion itself was magnificent. The furnishings were outstanding. We walked from room to room marveling at the furniture and their color scheme. The dishes and cutlery made a great impression. George was able to do a lot with Mount Vernon because of the help he got from Martha. I believe that she brought the wherewithal to the marriage. Monroe estate is also within a day s drive from Baltimore. His home was right up there in style and working condition. President Monroe made a huge impression on me. The Monroe Doctrine was a super piece of legislation. Monroe not only stood up to all foreign powers but told them, unilaterally, hands off of the Western World. This took courage. As much as we liked these Presidents homes it was Jefferson s Monticello that was the prize. The architecture, the layout of rooms, and the special conveniences built into the mansion are remarkable. Jefferson was an inventor, a statesman, scientist, an engineer, etc. We were amazed that the butler s pantry had a dumb waiter to bring hot food to the dining room. In most places in the 18 th century food was prepared off-site. Safety from fire, a distance from the heat of the kitchen was de rigueur. Jefferson designed a tunnel that connected to the main house and the dumb waiter was there to offer a quick access to the dining room. Jefferson was an outstanding intellectual. He was still down to earth. He had a relationship with one of his female slaves. Thomas had an extensive family with her. 7 Philadelphia offered a great day for the one-day visitor. The Franklin Museum and the Philadelphia Art Museum were super to explore. In fact, after our children left the homestead we visited this great city many times on our own. However with the children Pennsylvania meant Hershey Park. It was a great place to go with children. I was chicken to ride some of those roller coaster things. They were much too scary for me. During this period, the Hershey Company gave tours of its facility. It was fascinating to observe how those dried cacao beans became Hershey Kisses. The country club was beautiful and a special place to have a dress up dinner. The Lancaster area was another area we visited. The Amish are examples of industry and ingenuity. Recently, I modified my thoughts about their steadfast resistance to change. The level of dwarfism in their community is shocking. Inbreeding can be a disaster. The buggies that fill the roads in Lancaster County are picturesque but I prefer a 4-door sedan with an 8-cylinder internal engine. Zoom, Zoom! Finally, we installed an in-ground pool in our back yard. A great investment we made on behalf of our children. They became competent swimmers and we knew where they were in those hot sticky days of July. Alvin Bober July 2013
