1 7:58 The Bulletin Adat Chaim s News Source May 2014 Owings Mills, Maryland Iyar/Sivan 5774 From The Presidents Desk This year for the first time we celebrated Passover in Florida with my mother. Unlike any other Passover, we did head to the beach, and in particular, Matanzas Inlet south of St Augustine. This area allows one either to go to the Atlantic Ocean side or the intercostal waterway, which is connected by a passage of water from ocean to river. The current is such that sands shift so quickly that the water passage is not navigable. Years ago they gave up trying to keep the channel open. During the rise and fall of the tides, the story of the Exodus from Egypt became all too real, as though we were making the same journey as our ancestors. Walking in what appeared to be little tidal pools of water about a foot deep, I suddenly sank dramatically from my feet to my knees after a few short steps, slogging around and trying to get myself free. It gave real meaning to the words of the Psalmist: as their pursuers sank into the sea. Can you image chariots and horses? Can you image a multitude of people running to escape or the same number multiplied tenfold chasing after their former slaves? Can you imagine the sight of a vast number of families larger than those on spring break with college kids packing the beach? It is way too easy to succumb to the Hollywood version of the Exodus story. It would not have taken a tremendous manipulation of what we call nature to have created such a debacle for our ancestor s enemies. Yet this trip, and this particular year, with the weather being unseasonably cold and irrespective of humans able to create vast inroads in technology, I came to the realization how vulnerable we humans truly are. Our vulnerability goes beyond staying warm in winter or our ancestors gathering together for warmth throughout the desert nights, or staying cool during the summer or knowing how to adjust to the heat traveling through the desert, as our ancestors experienced on their long journey to freedom. Droughts and floods take their toll on the food supply and technology has its limits. The words ring true about having food in due season, just as much today for many nations of the world as it did back in our ancestors time. While we refrain during the Passover season from all the delectable delights we enjoy most of the year, it provides us an opportunity to reflect on what we have and provides us with an unparalleled connectivity with parents, grandparents and the generations before them. No Facebook, no Twitter, and no tweets, yet we know our ancestors and we remained connected to all that was meaningful this holiday season. Shalom, Art Wolf 1
