1 The Bulletin Adat Chaim s News Source November 2013 Owings Mills, Maryland Cheshvan/ Kislev 5774 From The Presidents Desk My wife & I had the good fortune to spend several days at the conference held in downtown Baltimore by the United Synagogues of Conservative Judaism a Centennial. The articles appearing in the Jewish Times does not begin to cover the depth of the conversations which took place at the convention both in the plenary talks and the individual workshops. With Rabbis, Presidents of Synagogues and highly motivated team leaders from across the USA and Canada our conversations commenced covering assorted topics about recapturing the spirit of Judaism in our various communities. Like politics there are various opinions and shade of beliefs. Throughout the conference the message was clear to find and create paths that will lead people back to the synagogue and provide new opportunities to have synagogues which flourish. The focus of the objective is to find commonality and not create labels that divide and alienate individuals. My wife and I heard testimony after testimony regarding synagogues who faced the very real threat of shutting their doors across the country. These organizations were fivefold larger than our institution with heavy legacy expenses. This fate was reversed by taking on engagement of the community, creating an atmosphere that was inclusive and sensitive to the community and taking a new look at historical strategies that had not been working. It takes real courage to change. Our congregation is blessed with individuals who have remained committed and It is reflective in the contribution and support mirrored in the High Holiday pledges. On behalf of the Board I want to thank the following congregants: Alperin Bober Elishewitz Heasley Korba Miller Raith M.Satisky G. Stern A. Weksberg Ament Boteach Frager Helsel Litofsky Mzhen Reamer Schoen J.Stern B.Weksberg Asher Bridge Gold Katz Marcus Newman Rosen Seidman Teichman Wesalo Blaustein Cohen Goldvarg Kohn Meier Posner D. Satisky Snyder A. Weksberg Wolf and the Sisterhood Which allowed us to reach pledges in excess of $ 15,400 against a budget of $ 12,000. We are truly appreciative of this level of support. Please check your synagogue announcements for the next general meeting which will happen within a few weeks and let us share our plans to move forward. Shalom, Art President Adat Chaim 1

11 Reminiscing by Alvin Bober November is our preview of wintry weather to come. Still we do have some balmy days with day time temperatures in the 60 s. That occasional snowstorm does occur and we re at the ready with our handy snow shovels. In this past year we have been exposed to antics by our Congress that are unbelievable. As some sages stated, our elected officials think more of their personal gain than the welfare of their country. The stalemate that shut our government down for almost 3 weeks was a shameful act. How can anyone justify such abominable behavior? The cost of the shutdown is estimated to have cost our economy 24 billion dollars. `The tragedy is ongoing. Nothing is really settled. In January we will be faced with the same issue. Will congress act in the same way? Maybe it s time to throw the rascals out. November has Thanksgiving Day. All is not lost,, we have one of the best national holidays this month. T-Day is a warm, family oriented celebration that is focused on home and family. The TV programming of football is a bonus. In our household T-Day is at home. The family assembles at our home along with a variety of guests. In past years we have had students, business acquaintances, girl/boy friends, etc at our table. The big deal is preparing the feast. The centerpiece is a substantial turkey. We slowly roast the bird. Basting it at frequent intervals. No fancy condiments or spice allowed. Plain roasting for hours is the mandate. The side dishes are where we show our ingenuity. Here is where we allow members of the family to demonstrate their skills and imagination. Our son-in-law is a 1 st class apple pie baker. Each year he prepares an outstanding apple pie. Greg has many attributes that make him a very important part of our family, but pie baking puts him in the front of the queue. We always serve gefilte fish and chopped liver as an appetizer. These are alongside of a whole cranberry sauce made from scratch. Carving the turkey is a task assumed by son Jason. Jason is a skilled person who can use tools to the nth degree. It s marvelous the ability he has developed. It s an enjoyable task to help prepare our T-day feast. It only takes 2 or 3 days to get back to normal and the cleanup isn t too horrible. T-day is so important because we open our homes to friends and family and express our thanks for a healthy and happy year. Alvin Bober November

12 Community Outreach Adat Chaim is organizing a special outreach to the community. The aim of this invitational program is to acquaint our congregation with the community. The first program is scheduled for January 24, The topic that will be explored is personal and home safety. A member of the Baltimore County police department will speak on this subject. Reserve the date, January 24, Officer Kauffman is a 20 year veteran of the Baltimore County Police Department. For the last 15 years he has been assigned to the Community Outreach Unit. He has received numerous certifications which has enabled Officer Kauffman to be considered an expert in home and personal security. Officer Kauffman has been recognized by the Police Department as well as the community as Officer of the Year on several occasions. He has many close ties within the community due to the fact that he grew up in the Reisterstown area. Officer Kauffman conducts community meetings throughout the area on topics such as: personal security, home security surveys, home security, bullying, Juvenile crime and many other topics. ***************************************************************************************************** Myra Wittik Adult Education Chair We are proud to welcome Rabbi Jan Caryl Kaufman, whose family is 6 th generation Baltimoreans, to Adat Chaim as our guest lecturer for the Annual Rabbi Seymour Essrog Memorial Lecture on November 8 th. Rabbi Kaufman is a Beth T filoh graduate who went on to earn a B.A. from Goucher College, a B.H. I. from Baltimore Hebrew University and a law degree from George Washington University. Rabbi Kaufman spent a good deal of her career in Jewish education. First, she was the associate Hillel Director at University of Md. And then went on to teach and serve as chaplain at Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School of Greater Washington. While there, she served as Rabbi at Congregation Kol Ami in Annapolis where she founded the Aleph-Bet Jewish Day School, soon to celebrate its 25 th anniversary. She became the founding principal of Solomon Schechter High School, initially located at the JTS. She spent almost the last two decades as the Director of Special Projects for the Rabbinical Assembly. While there, she coordinated national conferences on issues related to social action and spirituality; the annual Rabbinical Assembly Convention, programs of professional growth and learning for rabbis; developed new liturgical publications; and edited special publications. She was instrumental in the publication of the new Rabbinical Assembly Mahzor, Mahzor Lev Shalem, which she worked on for 12 years until it came out in The Mahzor has sold well over a quarter of a million copies. After 34 years in the rabbinate, she retired. And now, she is coming to Adat Chaim to treat us to The Secrets of Rabbis -- a treat you won t want to miss. Come and hear this thought-provoking talk and to honor the memory of the late Rabbi Essrog, who we all loved. Until next time, Myra 12
