1 Church Office: THE SOLID ROCK CHURCH Mailing Address: 3601 Cypress Gardens Rd Cypress Gardens Rd., Suite Q PO Box 926 Suite C Winter Haven, Fl Winter Haven, Fl Winter Haven, FL (863) Weekly Epistle Sundays: Adult Christian Ed 9:00 a.m / Holy Eucharist 10:00 a.m. Wednesdays: Prayer 5:00-5:45 - Service 6:00 p.m. Soaking Prayer: First Wednesday of the month and by appointment Saturdays: Prayer 9:30 10:30 April 17, 2010 The Divine Vision A Teaching Moment The vision we need is the vision of God himself, the God of the whole biblical revelation: the God of creation who made all things fair and good, and made man male and female to bear his image and subdue his world; the God of the covenant of grace who in spite of human rebellion has been calling out a people for himself; the God of compassion and justice who hates oppression and loves the oppressed; the God of the incarnation who made himself weak, small, limited and vulnerable, and entered our pain and alienation; the God of resurrection, ascension and Pentecost, and so of universal authority and power; the God of the church or the kingdom community to whom he has committed himself for ever, and whom he sends into the world to live, serve, suffer and die; the God of history who is working according to a plan and towards a conclusion; the God of the *eschaton*, who one day will make all things new. There is no room for pessimism here, or for apathy either. There is room only for worship, for expectant faith, and for practical obedience in witness and service. For once we have seen something of the glory of our God, and of the greatness of his commission, we can only respond, 'I was not disobedient to the heavenly vision.' --From 'Tasks Which Await Us', epilogue to ""Essays in Evangelical Social Ethics"", ed. 2 A From Mary: There will be a moonlight carillon concert at Bok Tower Gardens, Lake Wales, on Tuesday evening, April 27th at 7:30. These evenings are very beautiful with sights and music. The park entrance fee is only $5 for the event (half-price). Invite a friend or neighbor to go with you, and foster friendships with them. As we do things like that, we will have natural opportunities to share our Christian faith and witness. On May 1st, there is another moonlight concert. That concert is with the Imperial Symphony Orchestra. The choir will be going to the concert as a group. If we have 20 people in our group, we can get tickets for $15. If you would like to go with us to this Symphony Under the Stars, please see me this Sunday to buy tickets. Kids under 5 are free. (Hey- it is not too late to join choir!) Fr. Andy has scheduled an Inquirer s Course to run April 25-May 9. The classes will be held at 9 a.m. on Sunday mornings, in Fr. Andy s office. This class is required for anyone seeking membership in Solid Rock Church, and is also open to anyone who would just like to refresh themselves with our Anglican beliefs. 4 Adult Christian Education Sundays, 9:00 a.m. April 18, we will complete the DVD of the tribute to Archbishop Emmanuel Kolini from this year s Winter Conference. We had a nice group of people last week and would like to invite anyone who wasn t there to attend this week. You will most likely be surprised to hear all that Archbishop Kolini had to endure to begin to give Pastoral oversight for the fledgling Anglican Mission in America. Last week we heard others speak of journey, this week we will hear Archbishop Kolini relate this journey from his own perspective. Beginning April 25th, Deacon Joe will be leading a course of study from Focus on the Family entitled The Death & Resurrection of the Messiah which consists of 10 Faith Lessons. Teacher and historian Ray Vander Laan brings together history, culture, and geography to illuminate the Gospels. This series focuses on the last week of Jesus life, His death and resurrection, and the Holy Spirit s visit on Pentecost. 5 Want Ads The church needs a sturdy portable (on rollers) stand for the TV and DVD player in the Christian Education room. If anyone has one to donate, please contact Deacon Joe ( ) or the call the church office ( ). Remember those on our prayer lists and those who are shut in because of illness. A card or a note is a non-intrusive way to remind them they are missed and thought of. Yet another earthquake this week. This one in China. Pray for the victims and survivors. Pray for our world. 6 Avoiding the Millstone (A Preventative Program for Sexual Misconduct) In accordance with the requirement of the Anglican Mission in the Americas and The Solid Rock Church Children Protection Policies, all employees of the Church, all Vestry members, all persons with a key to the Church, and all persons who work with our children in any capacity are required to complete this training. This training is also open to anyone who wishes to complete it for their own edification and education in matters concerning our life as a parish family. A training session is scheduled for May 8, The classes will be held from 10 am to 2:30 pm with a break for a light lunch and fellowship time. Upon completion you will receive a Certificate and will be officially registered with Pawley s Island as having completed this requirement. Please contact Deacon Joe at deacon@thesolidrockchurch.info or call him at for information and scheduling. He will need your name and contact info as early as possible as there is paperwork that needs to be prepared for each attendee beforehand. *** The Rocket 70 Final Page 6 of 7 April 17, 2010
7 Why Men Should Join the Church Choir 10. Rehearsals are every Wednesday night. Which means that for those few hours, you will significantly reduce your risk of contracting tendinitis from nonstop operation of a television remote control or computer mouse. 9. Because you wear a choir robe every Sunday, you are liberated from a task many men find quite challenging: finding clothes that match properly. 8. From your special vantage point every Sunday, in which you look out at the entire congregation from the choir seats, you will develop interesting new hobbies. Among these is a little guessing game called "Who's Praying, Who's Sleeping?" 7. On the other hand, sitting in full view of people on a weekly basis makes it much less likely that you yourself will give in to a chronic lack of sleep. Although it has been known to happen. 6. If you think your singing in the shower sounds good now, just wait till you've been singing with us for a few weeks. 5. Singing in a choir is one of the few activities for men that does not require electronics equipment or expensive power tools. This could be good for the family budget. 4. For the fitness buffs, singing in the Choir is not only heart healthy, it's soul healthy. But there are no monthly membership fees, and it's a lot easier on the knees than jogging. 3. If you think you've done everything there is to do, and there are no great challenges left in life, try singing with us guys and staying on pitch. 2. Choir rehearsal lasts half as long as a professional football game, but is at least twice as satisfying. This is especially true if you are a long-suffering fan of the Miami Dolphins. (Don't worry, though, the rehearsals are on Wednesday, not Monday Nights.) And the number 1 reason men should join the choir: 1. When people ask you whether you've been behaving yourself, you can say with the utmost sincerity, "Hey, I'm a Choir Boy." Til Next Week The Rocket 70 Final Page 7 of 7 April 17, 2010
