1 High Holy Days 5775 Communicating and Connecting: Rabbi Alexander s Goal By Eleanor Weber Dickman The office that belonged to recently-retired Rabbi Daniel Pressman looks very different these days. The desk has moved to face the door and sunshine streams in from the windows formerly covered by a floor-to-ceiling bookcase. Behind the desk sits Rabbi Leslie Alexander, newly appointed Rabbi of Community Engagement and Outreach. She looks happy, comfortable, and ready to begin her new mission to revitalize the experience of Jewish life that relies on a person-to-person approach to living Jewishly. We can t survive on virtual Judaism, she says. Judaism needs to be person-toperson experiencing the power of holidays, the sound of prayer, and the commitment to spend time exploring and experiencing the underpinnings of Judaism. And that is done in the synagogue. Outreach may be the strategy by which Rabbi Alexander accomplishes these goals, but she interprets her mission as making congregants current and prospective know that the doors to Beth David are always open and that this is a place where one can belong, feel needed, and be cared for spiritually and personally. Rabbi Alexander comes to Beth David after 15 years of serving the larger Jewish community in the South Bay as the Federation s Community Chaplain, the Mikvah Rabbi, and the director of the highly regarded PJ Library program. I loved what I did at the Federation, and I loved the people there, she says, but acknowledges that she believes strongly in synagogue life. Secular endeavors alone cannot ensure value of Jewish continuity. Rabbi Alexander believes that the synagogue makes a positive vision and a sense of Jewish identity a reality, so when Rabbi Philip Ohriner described his goal to make synagogue participation exciting, intriguing and creative, she quickly wanted to be a part of it! Rabbi Alexander began her rabbinic career as an associate rabbi for ten years at Congregation Adat Ari El in Southern California, and now, this point in her career, she wanted to come back to the rabbinate. Her goal for this new role at Beth David is to help people better understand Judaism, and to encourage members, newcomers, and visitors to come in explore and come to find their own place in the community. 3 Dear friends, From the Rabbi For quite some time I have been thinking deeply about the concept of kehillah (community). What is Jewish community all about? What does it mean to belong to a kehillah kedoshah (a holy community)? How do we define our community? Where do we draw communal boundaries and how do we welcome new folks to our community? Over the course of the 20 th century, the nature, meaning, purpose, and boundaries of Jewish community radically changed. We moved away from shtetl life, both in its formal sense and in the decentralization of Jewish community as an effect of suburban sprawl. In America, we experienced an intensity in acculturation that surpasses any Jewish community in history. In Israel, we established a country based on Jewish values in our Jewish homeland that fundamentally changed the dynamics of kehillah. With the Pew study on the American Jewish community released this past year and the numerous previous studies it largely confirmed, it is clear that we are still grappling with the realities of last century s developments and what they mean for the 21st Century, American kehillah. It is my hope that this year our entire CBD community will join me in an extended conversation in thinking about these questions in very practical terms. As we build for our future, physically and spiritually, what are we aspiring to as a kehillah kedoshah? In truth, our communal conversation on these topics really began last year at various congregational meetings, board and staff retreats, and around the living room and dining room tables of numerous congregants during the launch of our Next50 Campaign. The seeds planted during those important gatherings began to grow as we prepared for my transition into the senior rabbi position and the hire of Rabbi Alexander as our Rabbi of Community Engagement and Outreach. What strikes me in reflecting on these gatherings and conversations is the number of congregants who aren t really sure how they connect to CBD nor how they would ideally like to connect. Many of us aren t really sure about the kinds of relationships we are looking to nurture or build through engaging in Jewish communal life. When folks were asked what kinds of activities they would be interested in attending or the kinds of programs that might interest them the answer is, Well, I guess I don t really know. This is because building a true kehillah kedoshah isn t about programs and activities. Creating a more vibrant kehillah kedoshah requires us to focus on creating, fostering, broadening, and deepening our relationships with our family, ourselves, our fellow kehillah members, our people, our homeland, our Judaism, our neighbors, and our God. These are the relationships that animate our lives and our world. They are the crucial connections that allow us to live our lives to the fullest extent. They are the things that should matter most. Therefore, I would like to propose a theme for CBD during the year of Our theme for this year, beginning with High Holidays is Cultivating Real Relationships, Creating Kehillah Kedoshah. Throughout the High Holidays and the year, we will be thinking together and learning about what it means to build relationships in the context of Jewish communal life, why these relationships are crucial to living a rich, full, and healthy life, and how we might expand the boundaries of our kehillah within the confines of Jewish law to create a radically welcoming and more expansive notion of community. Rabbi Alexander and I will be addressing these topics during our High Holiday remarks and will be revisiting them throughout the year. In addition, I will be facilitating a monthly class on Shabbat afternoons exploring the elements of Jewish law that directly impact how we craft a 21 st Century kehillah kedoshah. Then, in March we will have the opportunity to revisit these topics with our inspiring Scholarin-Residence, Ron Wolfson, who literally wrote the book on these questions (Relational Judaism: Using the Power of Relationships to Transform the Jewish Community). Our fantastic Jewish Conversations team will be reaching out to you to speak very personally about these topics in one-to-one conversations and in the context of parlor meetings. Further, the board of directors and I will be exploring and creating opportunities for our entire community Continued on page 4 A Communal Conversation: Cultivating Real Relationships, Creating Kehillah Kedoshah By Rabbi Ohriner 3

4 From the Rabbi Continued from page 3 to discuss how we fund our Kehillah Kedoshah in dignified, sustainable, and relationally engaging ways. Most importantly, our staff and lay leadership are actively thinking about the way we celebrate holidays and lifecycle events, the classes we offer, the programs we plan, and the opportunities we create so that we might all cultivate more fully realized relationships across the relational spectrum. As we look forward to new opportunities for learning, conversation, and Jewish engagement in the new year, may our lives and our kehillah as a whole be elevated in holiness by the bonds the bring us together and enriched through the relationships we might strengthen in the perpetual process of creating community. On behalf of Shoshana, Ari, Eli, Kobi, and myself, we wish each of you a Shanah Tovah u metukah, a sweet and good new year imbued with joy, growth, and a deepening of personal and communal relationships! 5 Dear Friends, President s Perspective L shana tova! If my math is correct, you should be receiving this issue right before our special meeting set for September 14th, and two weeks before Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. As we gear up for the Yamim Nora im, the 10 days of reflection between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, we take stock of ourselves, our relationship with God and our relationship with our friends, family, neighbors and acquaintances our community. This column is devoted to thanking all of YOU who are part of our wonderfully caring, engaging, exciting, inspiring, inventive, insightful, welcoming community. We are what we are, because of YOU! Have you noticed that we have two familiar faces, in new positions, on the bima? While we welcome both rabbis Ohriner and Alexander in their new positions, I have to thank Rabbi Pressman, once again, for leading the way in making this clergy leadership transition as seamless (and painless) as possible. To Rabbi s Ohriner and Alexander: Your board fully supports your vision in engaging our membership in new and exciting ways; programs that will help Beth David adapt to remain relevant for Jews of all ages, in the coming years. The clergy and the board can only do so much, however, without the help of the rest of our amazing community. So I want to recognize, and thank, EVERYONE who takes part in a Beth David activity or program; who leads, learns, visits, davens, noshes, teaches, volunteers, donates I hope you get the idea. A big thank you to everyone engaged in our Education programs -- from our pre-kindergarten Ganon class through Adult Education, we nurture students of all ages and backgrounds. So thank you to our education and ritual directors, our teachers, our parent volunteers in the classrooms and steering committees, our Adult Education committee. Thank you to the volunteers that run the Honeygram program in the fall, that support our teen education programs, and the Mishloah Manot program during Purim, to support our religious school. Thank you to our Torah tutors and b nai mitzvot mentors; to our teen madrikhim volunteers and our book discussion leaders. A hearty Todah Rabah to our Social Action volunteers -- from blood drives, clothing drives, food drives, backpack drives, rotating shelters... each of these activities requires an owner as well as many donors. Noten Yad s focus in senior transportation is paying off as the County allocated new grants to senior transportation issues. Yasher koach! By David Hoffman, CBD Board President Fun -- BBQ and Barkhu, Hazak-sponsored dinners and other outings, Zahavah coffee meet and greets; Mens Club activities, Kadima sleepovers, Purim carnivals (and the wonderful silent auction!). To all who planned, and all who partook, thank you! And just wait! There is more to come from the inventive and creative playbook of Rabbi Alexander and the Membership Committee! Families -- From Saturday morning Tot Shabbats, Friday night Pajama Shabbats, family education days, cub scouts, we cater to our families. For the leaders of these activities, thank you! Israel -- we support Israel from the pulpit to the classroom. Our religious school sponsored an Israeli cultural fair. We teach Israeli and Jewish folk dance and music to our youth, (although parents are always urged to participate too!). We commemorate Yom Ha shoah with a traveling Holocaust museum, and Yom Ha atzmaut with food, song and dance. And let s not forget our Silicon Valley-wide community event to support Israel and Stop the Sirens. To the planners, teachers and participants, thank you! Compassion and Caring -- We sponsor the only daily minyan in a conservative shul in Santa Clara County to permit the Kaddish to be recited by those who need to. We celebrate happy lifecycle events, and support each other through the sad and painful events. We endeavor to welcome new members and visitors every Shabbat. Once again, to our volunteers who organize these key activities, thank you! Beth David -- High Holy Days would come to a crashing halt without the volunteers that assist in organizing the honors for the services; galvanize the ushers; ensure that there are doctors on call. Shabbat services are lead by our many lay leaders. Classes are offered for those who would like to learn how to lead part of the service. Our building is maintained by a combination of staff and volunteers who do more with less each year. Our annual budget is bridged by the annual campaign, managed each year by volunteers from the Board of Directors. So thank you to our volunteers and staff that work behind the scenes to make Beth David run as efficiently as it can. And thank you all for your financial support of Beth David. Finally, for those staff and volunteers whose categories I did not name or list, please accept my humble apologies, particularly during this week. Let me offer an early al chet for my sin of omission. I did not intend to snub you. I intend to, and do, THANK YOU. May we all be awarded another year of good health and success. 5

7 Rabbi Alexander s Goal Continued from front cover Rabbi Alexander acknowledges that in the beginning she tended to be less open to the spectrum of ways to engage with Jewish life. However, as the Jewish Community Chaplain, she saw the kaleidoscope of ways people resonated with Judaism. In her various roles for the Federation, she learned how much Jewish people need the key to unlock their connection to Judaism. Now, as she returns to congregational leadership, she wants to build upon the power of people s yearning for the beauty of Jewish life. Her first goal will be to create opportunities for synagogue members to find their personal niches at Beth David by opening doors for involvement, participating in activities they already enjoy within the framework of Jewish life. She wants to help people see how their individual gifts, talents and insights can make a difference to Beth David. Her goals are to develop effective ways to engage people in the congregation and to deepen communal tradition at the synagogue. Then, she plans to devise ways to bring people to experience and experiment with Jewish life, to bring their gifts to the congregation what they are good at, what they are passionate about. Finding new ways to help congregants rediscover each other and to help newcomers feel welcome will be the foundation of the activities she hopes to develop. She hopes to provide the comfort of continuity plus the energy of mutual exploration. This is Rabbi Alexander s philosophy. Her practical responsibilities will develop from these ideas: To work with Rabbi Ohriner to develop new forms of prayer. To strengthen in reach through affinity groups and neighborhood gatherings, and by learning members needs and creating opportunities for congregants to enjoy each other. To create meaningful and joyous celebration together on a regular basis through events that celebrate major holidays. To work with staff and Board members to help complete the Next 50 campaign by learning about our congregation s strengths, its history, and its plans to create new spiritual and social space for meaningful interaction. To provide enjoyable interactive new opportunities for prayer and heightened holiday enjoyment. To support Rabbi Ohriner in pastoral duties relating to the life cycle experiences of members. Rabbi Alexander has defined a challenging set of goals for herself and for Beth David. With the help of staff, board, and congregants, she is confident that these goals can be achieved. Project Isaiah High Holy Days Food Drive Please help fulfill the Mitzvah of feeding the hungry by bringing non-perishable nutritious grocery items to Erev Yom Kippur services. Canned food: tuna, soups, chili, beans, vegetables, juices Packaged and sealed pastas, macaroni, rice, beans, cereals, crackers, cookies Infant formula, baby foods, diapers Your donation will be given to Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Clara County. Second Harvest provides food to more than a quarter of a million people each month. On-line donations are also graciously accepted at (After you enter the site, type Congregation Beth David in the search box below the food drive portion of the page.) Your help is also needed to prepare for the food drive. We need your help to handout donation bags to congregants at Erev Rosh Hashanah and 1 st day morning Kehila K tana and Kehila G dola services. Please contact Bryan Ferguson (socialaction@beth-david.org) if you can volunteer. 7

9 What We ve Learned So Far, From Our Jewish Conversations By Bonnie Slavitt Moore We re entering our fourth month of holding Jewish conversations and a pattern is starting to emerge. Your fellow congregants have been forthright about what they value about CBD, and what changes they would like to see when we have the space. The other day someone asked, What are you doing with all the information? It s not just going into a drawer, is it? A good question! The answer is, after each conversation, we send our detailed notes back to the CBD Administrative and Rabbinic offices. Rabbi Alexander reads each one and will get a sense of which are the most requested. There are many, many exceptionally creative ideas and many similar requests. Over time, a significant number of your ideas and requests will be incorporated into new community engagement opportunities. Based on the conversations to date, top priorities are: Holding get-togethers for people who live in the same neighborhood, and for people with the same interests Expanding mitzvah and social-action programs Organizing events for people at a particular stage of life, such as young parents or empty nesters Organizing events for different generations, so that teens can connect with seniors, toddlers with grandparents, and so on. Creating an even more welcoming and open Beth David community. Whether someone walks through our front door for the 1st time or the 2,000th time, we want that person to feel welcome and needed. To those of you who have already shared your hopes for our beautiful new facility and made a meaningful gift, thank you! For those of you who have scheduled your conversation, we are looking forward to hearing what you have to say. You count. 10 For many, the Tashlikh (casting) ritual is a highlight of the High Holidays. Based on a phrase from the Prophetic Book of Micah (7:19): You will cast (tashlikh) all their sins into the depths of the sea, Tashlikh provides an opportunity to symbolically do just that cast our sins in the form of bread crumbs or stones into a (preferably) moving body of water. This year, we are excited to be partnering with the Addison Penzak Jewish Community Center for our communal tashlikh walk and ceremony (see page 11 for more information). Join us for tashlikh on Sunday, September 28 th. Meet at 4pm at the Levy Family Campus and walk to Vasona Park, stopping along the way to perform Tashlikh. Bring-yourown picnic to follow. Rosh Hashanah unless it happens to fall on Shabbat, in which case we have held it on the second day of Rosh Hashanah. As this is a relatively recent custom, first mentioned by the Maharil, Rabbi Yaakov Moelin (Germany, ), there is greater flexibility in how and when the custom is performed. Moving our tashlikh to the Sunday between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur will allow those in our community who do not drive on Rosh Hashanah to join us, as well as provide more time Our tashlikh experience will take place on Sunday, September 28th. We will meet at 4pm at the Levy Family Campus and walk to Vasona Park, stopping along the way to perform Tashlikh. At Vasona Park, we will meet up with those who may not join us for the walk and have a brief concluding tashlikh followed by a bring-your-own-picnic. There will be parking available at the picnic area for those who require it. This will be a departure from our tashlikh experience in previous years. Until now, CBD has always held tashlikh on the first day of for us to spend with family on Rosh Hashanah. For those who would prefer to perform tashlikh on Rosh Hashanah either at Calabazas creek or elsewhere or for those who cannot make it on Sunday, we will have a tashlikh guide available for you to take from Rosh Hashanah services so that you can perform tashlikh at your convenience. Normative practice is to perform this poignant ritual sometime between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, with some holding it can be performed even until Hoshanah Rabbah (the middle of Sukkot). 10

14 Shmittah: Are You In? Our synagogue is embarking on a year-long journey to communally observe the 3,000 year old mitzvah of Shmittah. The Torah mandates that every seven years we observe a Shmittah -- a rebalancing of our relationship with the natural world and with each other. On a fixed cycle that started with the giving of the Torah, the Shmittah year has been observed every seventh year throughout the ages. While traditionally mandated only on Eretz Yisrael, Shmittah is a dynamic opportunity for Jews everywhere to reassess our relationship to the natural world and to embrace meaningful social action. The next Shmittah year begins this Rosh Hashana. CBD congregant Rabbi Allan Berkowitz developed a new program for communal observance of the Shmittah year. Will you take the pledge? The commitment of each one of us is small but the collective impact is large. Join with your fellow CBD members. Together we will create a collective positive impact on stewardship of the earth and advance social justice. What Is Shmittah? Shmittah is a dynamic and powerful tool that promotes social justice and equity, rebalances the priorities of Jews everywhere concerning our relationship to the natural world, challenges our consumption and consumerism habits, and challenges us to achieve social equity. In the Torah s words, Six years you shall sow your land and gather its produce; but in the seventh year, you shall let it rest and lie fallow. Let the needy among your people eat of it, and what they leave, let the wild beasts eat. You shall do likewise with your vineyards and olive groves. Exodus 23:10-11 The Torah has us pull back from working the land so that we may reflect on our relationship to the land; it reminds us that we don t own the natural world, rather it is God-given to humanity as a whole. The Torah tells us that the land lies fallow and anything that grows on its own is for those in need to freely harvest. Elsewhere the Torah mandates that debts be forgiven every seventh year a radical economic way to hit the reset button for those in debt. Why Embrace Shmittah? Our tradition views every living thing human, animal, plant as having a measure of sanctity since all creation emanates from God. Jewish tradition empowers us to care for the natural world and to care for each other. We are not doing a very good job. The Shmittah year is an opportunity to ask ourselves, How can I be a better steward of the created world? Am I doing enough to promote social justice? Shmittah can be a year of rebalancing and re-examining and, through the collective good works of a community, a year of great impact. What is the Shmittah Pledge? The CBD Shmittah Program is centered around two themes: 1. Activities That Promote Healthy Relationship to The Land 2. Activities That Promote Social Justice As a community we want to elevate the values of Shmittah by collectively engaging in actions that achieve impact greater than the sum of the parts. CBD members are invited to pledge, on a quarterly basis, to embrace at least one action from each category. The Shmittah Pledge Form lists the recommended activities from which to choose. An Example of Shmittah In Action: The Torah mandates that debts be forgiven in the Shmittah year so that those who are impoverished can restart their lives. The Shmittah Pledge includes an option to donate monthly a multiple of seven (7 cents, 7 dollars, etc) to the Hebrew Free Loan Society (today s equivalent of easing debt impoverishment). Imagine the collective impact of 100 CBD members pledging to give a multiple of 7 for one year. We will track our community metrics: how many dollars are being donated to the Hebrew Free Loan? How many home gardners are donating excess produce to food assistance programs? How many people committed to buy local produce, in season? How many are repurposing no longer used goods? The power of many will be inspirational to all. Along the way and as the year unfolds, we will study and reflect on our relationship to the land and our commitments to social justice. We will stage special activities that further the values of Shmittah. And when the year is over, we will gather in celebration of our collective success (and explore how to keep it going). Take The Shmittah Pledge We invite you to fill out your Shmittah Pledge form on the following page and send it to: Prospect Road, Saratoga, CA or drop it by the CBD office. 14

22 Reconnecting and Recharging at this Year s BBQ & Barkhu by Eleanor Webber Dickman A sold-out crowd converged on the lawn at CBD on Friday evening, August 22 nd, prepared to reconnect and recharge, at our annual BBQ and Barkhu. The field next to the synagogue s classrooms was the open air gathering for congregants ready to feast on barbecued chicken, hot dogs and veggie burgers. Tater tots, corn on the cob, and coleslaw as well as glutenfree alternatives were served as side dishes. Cookies, brownies, and smores were available for dessert. blocks engaged kids in building. There was a reading rug for tykes listening to children s books or playing with toys. Bold red and white checkered tablecloths added to the festive mood. Just in case someone might be seated next to someone they did not know, the napkin holding the tableware had a question to ask of a tablemate in order to break the ice. Before folks sat down for Erev Shabbat dinner, there were nibbles and drinks for children and adults. A series of tables offered brochures and flyers describing all the congregation s programs, learning opportunities for young and old, and special events. At other tables, Lego Conversation was lively as members waited in line to get food, and continued with enthusiasm after they had seated themselves to enjoy chewing and chatting. Near the end of the meal, musical entertainment was provided by Dror Sinai who sang and drummed on a tof. The event, organized by Rabbi of Community Engagement and Outreach, Leslie Alexander, fulfilled its promise with warmth and camaraderie. Newcomers and old-timers alike fully enjoyed the event. Following the dinner, congregants moved to the sanctuary to attend a Friday night service conducted by Rabbi Philip Ohriner. Dror Sinai and a group of high school students drummed while congregants sang the melodies of prayer. The nourishment was both gastronomic and spiritual. The goals of reconnecting and recharging were happily met. 22

24 Kids Helping Kids Through A School Backpack Drive Teens from USY, Kadima, the BBYO chapters of MoAD and Neshikot and our own Jewish Experience for Teens (JET) program came together on Sunday, July 27 th for a Social Action Tikkun Olam (SATO) project. The group organized and packed 65 backpacks with school supplies for 2 nd to 12 th grade students from low-income families. The filled backpacks were donated to Anderson Elementary School, Jewish Family Services of Silicon Valley, and Next Door Solutions to domestic violence Thank you to all the donors who provided funds and supplies for this Tikkun Olam project. Also thank you to the amazing teens who participated and Bryan Ferguson, Bonnie Hirsch, Irene Swedroe, Seema Cicerone, Iris Bendahan and Andrea Ammerman for assisting in a variety of ways. A special shout-out, to Evan Hirsch, a CBDer and Cal Poly student, who volunteered for the event. Upon hearing of the our success in donating 65 backpacks, Rabbi Ohriner wrote What an amazing act of chesed, kindness! To help another, especially a child, to help themselves through education truly comports with the highest level of giving according to Maimonides.
