1 MAY CBD Teens Have Landslide Representation On Regional Youth Boards By: Irene Swedroe, MsEd Teen Education Coordinator for the JET Program Mazel tov to our amazing teens on their elections to their regional youth group boards! This year, Mayer Adelberg will be completing his term on the USY Regional Board, while Molly Ball, Talia Clements and Oded Tzori will serve on next year s BBYO Regional Board. What makes all of this news extra special? Each of these teens has been involved in our other CBD teen programs: Teen Madrichim Team (TMT) and Jewish Experience for Teens (JET). Together, these programs emphasize the Jewish teachings of Leadership, Mitzvot and Tikkun Olam - all of which strengthen our teens Jewish values and their Jewish identity. Molly, Talia, (former TMTer s), Oded, and Mayer, (currently part of our TMT program) continue to enrich their Jewish Education by participating in our JET Dinner and Learn program. 3 Dear friends, From the Rabbi By Rabbi Philip Ohriner Seven Jewish Values of the Sustaining Contribution Model One month ago Congregation Beth David embraced the Sustaining Contribution Model as a replacement for our previous dues structure. This new model invites our members to invest in the future of our kehillah kedoshah instead of requiring dues. Guided by meticulous research, absolute transparency, and an interminable dedication to Jewish values, we move into a new era at CBD led by a responsible, responsive, and forward-thinking board of directors. I have spent a lot of time with our board and our members exploring this model, crafting a suitable CBD version, and advocating for its adoption. Over the past three years I ve identified (at least) seven values expressed in this exciting change. Tzedakah: Righteous Giving Moving away from traditional dues reframes the way we provide for our community s needs. Dues feel like a demand. The Sustaining Contribution Model allows us to translate our commitment, connection, and satisfaction in seeing our Jewish values realized through our kehillah into a sacred philanthropic act. Achrayut: Responsibility The Sustaining Contribution Model acknowledges our shared responsibility to contribute what we can to ensure CBD s excellence. If belonging to CBD enriches our lives, we have responsibility to sustain it so that we and others might continue to reap the benefits of membership in a sacred community. N divut: Generosity By allowing each member to support CBD at either the sustaining number, an amount greater if blessed with ability to do so, or a lesser amount if necessary, recognizes the essential truth that generosity may look different for different CBD members. Kavod: Dignity Most dues models require members to pay full dues or apply for permission to pay a smaller amount. Even while displaying utmost sensitivity to members financial needs, the process of seeking permission to contribute less robs members of their sense of dignity and regularly serves as a tremendous barrier to new members. The Sustaining Contribution Model allows every member to give as generously as they can without feeling embarrassed if their financial situation does not allow them to contribute at the sustaining number. It should feel good and honorable to give as generously as we can! Hiddur Zaken: Honoring our Seniors Throughout the process of considering this shift in providing for CBD s financial needs I was regularly reminded that many of our members are seniors living on a fixed income who cannot give as generously as they might have in past decades. By embracing this model we inherently recognize this reality and honor every member s contribution, including the contributions of our seniors. Shutafut: Partnership All of the values mentioned above are encapsulated in this one. Providing for CBD s operating needs is not an endeavor that occurs one member at a time. It is a sacred task we all participate in as communal partners, as a kehillah kedoshah. We recognize that a sacred community is made up of members with differing means. We could never all give at the same amount. There is always someone else with a personal obligation to give more, but we have faith in the fact that if we all contribute as generously as we can, the end result will sustain us, allow us to grow in Torah learning, buoy our ability to strengthen old relationships and create new ones, and provide for the spiritual, physical, and emotional needs of our membership. Tahalich: Process Aside from the overwhelmingly positive outcomes I see coming from this shift away from dues, I am also in awe of how our kehillah continually charts our course for the future. Beyond the immensely respectful way in which our community interacts with one another, there is also a commitment to transparency, thoroughness, diligence, conscientious experimentation, and the belief that CBD can truly become a consummate Kehillah Kedoshah. 5 Dear Hevre, President s Perspective I thought I d use this column to list my top 10 reasons of why I love being a member of Congregation Beth David. With a tip of my kippah to David Letterman, here I go (in no particular order): 10. Our youth education program - My daughters are graduates of religious school. Our rose by any other name is now JYEP Jewish Youth Education Program. It provides quality education from pre-k through the B nei Mitzvah years, and JET (Jewish Experience for Teens) for what was once known as Hebrew High. 9. Netivot Program - Speaking of quality education, our religious school offers four paths for our students recognizing that every student learns differently. Our longrunning Myuchad program is designed for students with special needs and learning challenges. Nativ 2 is designed for students who entered our school late, (3rd grade or higher), or are struggling with the grade level program due to illness or an undiagnosed learning needs. Nativ 3 is for students at grade-level. And Nativ 4 is for students who need an extra challenge for advanced Hebrew, either because they come from a day school background, or are Israeli. We personalize education for our students! 8. Continuing Education - Think of our many Sunday seminars: Shabbat discussions, scholar-in-residence weekends, and Friday morning Talmud and spiritual ethics discussions. I ll add to this our newest Shabbat offerings Pathways of the Soul. Main services don t work for you? Try a session with Rabbi Alexander in the Learner s Minyan, an in-depth discussion on the Torah portion offered by Rabbi Berkowitz; or TORAH-LIVE! With Doug Brook. 7. Our innovative programming - Ani V Ata A Capella singing group in January; Hamen-Scotchen in February; Purim Spiel in March; It s all About Me (also in March), to name but a few recent programs. 6. Our social action activities blood drives, food drives, clothing drives; hosting the rotating Men s shelter; cooking Christmas dinner for a local shelter; and involving ourselves in our local community through Saratoga Serves. 5. Our varied interest groups - Jewish Book Group, Threads of Tradition, HAZAK, Noten Yad, Havurah, Lean in Circle, Sisterhood, Men s Club, and our Jewish Teen groups (Kadima, USY, BBYO). 4. Chevrat Chesed - I single this committee out because what it does behind the scenes defines Congregation Beth David as a caring and holy community. Chevrat Chesed provides short term assistance to members of our community who have find themselves in By David Hoffman, CBD Board President unexpected circumstances; have suffered a loss, are ill, or are welcoming a new baby. 3. Our Volunteers - It takes committed people to make these programming, social action, interest groups and Chevrat Chesed programs to be successful. We have a marvelous community of volunteers that help manage and run these programs. 2. Our staff - We have a professional, committed and caring staff from our teachers to our office staff, senior staff, and of course, our clergy. 1. You - Your energy, your willingness to being part of something greater than yourselves. Your desire to be Jewish in the 21 st Century; and your commitment to share of yourselves with others in our Kehilla K dosha, our Holy Community. Your friendship and fellowship. Most of my best friends in my adult life were formed here at CBD. For that, I am grateful. L shalom, David Hoffman 5

6 The Congregation Beth David Board of Directors voted on and approved the adoption of the Sustaining Contribution Model on March 18, This model replaces our traditional dues model. The income from dues has provided the majority of our income, and is essential for sustaining synagogue life. Other income is from religious school tuition, and the remainder comes from the Annual Campaign and other donations. In the new model, each year the Finance Committee determines a sustaining number an amount that multiplied by the number of members will sustain the necessary income previously received from dues. Congregants may pay an amount which is less or greater than the Sustaining Number amount. In this model, the contribution you pledge each spring is in place of the dues that had been charged in the past. We believe the new Sustaining Contribution Model engenders a relationship between our membership and CBD based on responsibility, trust, dignity and tzedakah. In short, we believe supporting and sustaining Beth David should be seen as a form of tzedakah. We further believe we can trust one another to be responsible in sustaining our kehillah kedoshah, our sacred community. Our previous dues model required new and current congregants to pay full dues or apply for permission to pay a smaller amount. Even with the utmost sensitivity to the financial needs of our members, this element of our previous dues structure was a barrier to entry for potential new members and a disincentive for some members to remain in our kehillah. The Finance Committee of the Board of Directors has determined the Sustaining Number, to sustain Congregation Beth David, for each two adult membership unit to be $248 per month or $2,976 per year. For singles, the amount is half that, $124 per month or $1,488 per year. Note, the $10 per month Building Fund is no longer assessed to any members. The Board of Directors respects and honors all congregants and their ability to sustain our synagogue, our holy community, at all levels of contribution. If you are able to contribute the Sustaining Number amount, please do so. You should have received your first Sustaining Contribution Pledge Letter in the mail in March. They were due April 24, If you have not returned your letter yet please do so as soon as possible. Applications Being Accepted for The Silver, Sabes, Frank Youth Fund Merit Scholarship for Jewish Summer Camps Merit Scholarships will be awarded for Jewish overnight summer camp/ trip (or group) experiences. Children of CBD members who are entering 6th - 12th grade are eligible for this scholarship. See application regarding eligibility. You may obtain a scholarship application by ing JET@bethdavid.org or by downloading one at Beth-David.org/merit_scholarship The deadline to apply is May 18th. Recipients will be notified after May 27th. 6

7 We are looking for you to help us create an evening of time travel. Initial Meeting: May 20 th 7:30-9:00 pm Come join the fun and excitement in preparing for Jewish Time Travel: An 1800 s Saturday Night taking place November 14 th in cooperation with the outdoor museum History San Jose. We will have museum docents along with CBD volunteers in locations such as a firehouse, school house, post office, doctor s office, a home, fruit barn, trolley building, hotel, bank, blacksmith, a print shop and a dance hall. We need musicians and crafters, historical figure impersonators, magicians and dancers and any one who would love to organize a small piece of the event or help out in any of these locations. In each place we will have Jewish and general things to experience from the Gold Rush to the turn of the century Bay Area. These will be activities, entertainment and learning experiences for all ages- from children through adults. Come help make this the community event of the year. It will be fun, energizing and meaningful. An Experience You'll Remember This year the Limmud Bay Area Experience will begin on Friday afternoon, continuing thru a joyous, meaningful, multi-denominational Shabbat experience, and end on Sunday. There will be stimulating sessions in any given hour on topics ranging from Talmud to psychology, from film to Bible, from Food, Wine and other Sensual Delights and Jewish yoga to Peoplehood and geopolitics. Eat delicious food that's locally sourced and strictly kosher. Learn from renowned presenters, engage in discussion groups, express yourself in art, and make new friends. Unlike most conferences, all presentations are open to all participants and no signups are required. All ages welcome (check out programming for kids). Last year was my first year attending a Limmud conference, and it was a wonderful experience meeting, dining and learning with Jewish members from the entire Bay Area. Who knew you could get such an amazing, regional Jewish experience without having to live in LA or NY! I hope many more CBD members take advantage and attend Limmud 2015! 18 JYEP students participated in one of four parallel seders held on the Sunday before Passover. JGan/Gan led by Morot Sharon and Hindy; Alef led by Morah Ora; Bet/Gimel led by Morot Davida and Hemy; and 4th 7th graders led by Irene Swedroe with assistance from her awesome TMTers. Many thanks to the efforts by the teachers and the TMTers to get 4 parallel portable seder experiences set up and running! Alef students created seder plates as they learned and ate (above). Morah Davida and Morah Hemy led Bet/Gimel in an artistic model seder which included creating lovely afikoman wraps (right). 18

19 4 th - 7 th graders participated in a chocolate seder which included chocolate covered matzah, chocolate eggs, chocolate haroset, Twix as shank bone, candy fruit as orange, apples dipped in bitter cocoa, and swedish "gefilte" fish.
