2 P A G E 2 Rabbi s ReMarks One of the central characters in the Purim story is King Ahasuerus, the ruler of the Persian Empire. His role in the narrative involves creating the situation that places the Jews of his realm in peril of their lives and, subsequently, at the climactic moment of the story, rescuing them from their impending annihilation. By showing more interest in partying than in ruling, by appointing the vain and bigoted Haman to the position of vizier, and by signing on to Haman s anti-jewish decree without verifying the allegations on which it is based, the King has recklessly and without cause threatened the lives of his loyal Jewish subjects. Fortunately, he is susceptible to the charms of his Jewish queen, Esther, and when she intervenes in behalf of the Jewish community, the king has Haman executed and enables the Jews to defend themselves against their enemies. Talk about having to clean up a mess of one s own making! On Saturday evening, March 11th, our Temple Israel Choir will be carrying on a congregational tradition of ten plus years standing. Our Purim spiel this year will feature the music of a more recent king, Elvis Presley, the King of Rock n Roll. The tunes will be familiar, but the lyrics are parodies that are intended to be a re-telling of the Megillah in modern musical idiom. The choir has spent many hours in rehearsal working on the show, and I hope we will have a large turnout for the Megillah reading and spiel as well as for the dinner before. Purim is a time for masquerade, carnivals, parodies and release from some of the inhibitions we normally feel and from the stringencies of a life of piety. The sub-text of the holiday, however, is of utmost seriousness. Anti-Jewish prejudice and its dire consequences for our people can be traced back to antiquity. Whether hostility to Jews was based on religion, on nationalism, or on pseudo-scientific notions about race, the resulting outcome for Jews was frequently discrimination, expulsion, and physical attacks on life and limb. Haman s defamation of the Jewish community and its traditions was but one of many instances of such slander in our long history; the genocide plotted by Haman was thwarted by Esther, but there were all too many times in Jewish history, when a happy ending did not ensue and when violence was perpetrated. Sadly, we are now experiencing a rise in incidents that shake our sense of security. Four waves of bomb threats over the last two months have targeted Jewish Community Centers around the country. A synagogue in Chicago was vandalized, and grave markers in a Jewish cemetery in St. Louis were overturned. Neo- Nazi and white supremacist leaders, whose names were totally unknown to me a few months ago, are spewing their hate openly. Jews are not the only target of hate in America at present. We need to speak out in behalf of all who are victims of hate speech and hate crimes, first of all because bigotry and hate are morally wrong and a threat to our democracy, but also because a society in which stereotyping, scapegoating, racism and group defamation abound is not one in which Jews can ever feel secure. I believe that people of good will still far outnumber the haters. I am gratified by the efforts by our Jewish community and its organizations to reach out to and sponsor joint activities with other groups in Springfield Muslims, African-Americans, and Presbyterians among others. Intergroup cooperation and understanding are vital to the well-being of our communities. May the light and joy, gladness and honor of which the Megillah speaks prevail over the hate and fear which so threaten and trouble us. Rabbi Barry A. Marks Condolences To Sandy Weiss on the passing of her brother, Sam Carl Mazel Tov Genie Melamed, a Junior at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, has been accepted into the political science honors program. She has exceeded the required 3.5 GPA.
3 P A G E 3 President s Message As we move towards spring, many of us turn our thoughts to warmer weather activities and, even though it has been a mild winter thus far, to hanging up the coats and hats for several months. We continue to work hard on the issue of the future of the Jewish community. In January you all received the final report to what is termed Phase I by our Joint Committee. All of the representatives appointed to that Committee, by both synagogues, deserve our great praise and thanks. Some may not be over joyed at the recommendations while others may see it as the logical course to go in light of our decreasing population and the aging process. By the time you read this, individuals will have been appointed to the working committees which were recommended in that report. Each congregation will have 3 representatives on each committee with a member of the Joint Committee serving as a liaison to them. Both Rabbis have been asked and have agreed to serve as advisors to the Worship Committee. While we did defer the congregational meeting originally planned to be held on February 5, we do intend to work with our friends at Temple B rith Shalom at rescheduling that for a later date. In light of both Congregational Boards accepting the framework of the recommendations from the Joint Committee we will have moved forward and thus perhaps arranged for a slightly different congregational meeting then that which was originally contemplated. Personally, I am ready to accept the broad outline of the report as presented while I continue to have questions about how we will reach the compromises which are essential for success. I look forward to your input on this most important topic. In the meantime, I want to personally thank Mark and Sari Wancket who have agreed to chair this year s Century Brunch scheduled for the end of June. I hope that all of you will be willing to assist in this most important effort in some way. Whether by volunteering, speaking to others about it, or, most helpfully, purchasing a ticket and coming to share the event with us your involvement will make this a great event. JCRC Mitzvah Mobile Food Pantry 2017 Saul Morse For the last two years, JCRC in conjunction with Temple B rith Sholom, Temple Israel and other local Jewish organizations have sponsored a mobile food pantry. Last year we distributed 12,000 pounds of food to approximately 140 patrons, families and individuals who without our support and other groups like us would have insufficient food to meet their needs. The year s mobile food pantry will be held on Saturday, May 20, 2017 in the parking lot of Temple B rith Sholom from 8 a.m. till approximately 12:30 p.m. or until all of the food is distributed. But in order to make this event a success, we need your help. Specifically, we need volunteers. Last year, we had 72 individuals of all ages who participated. Volunteer shifts and assignments will depend on your availability, interest and physical abilities and limitations. Jordan Litvak has once again graciously agreed to organize the volunteer effort. Anyone willing to participate should contact him at jjjlitvak@gmail.com. Please also express to him your time availability, preference of assignments if any, and physical limitations so that he can best accommodate everyone. Last year, in addition to the food give away, we also collected and distributed toiletries. These are necessary supplies that are not always available from other sources. Mary Beth Cohen has volunteered to organize this collection effort. More information will be provided in the future regarding the types of items we need, but anyone willing to assist Mary Beth should contact her at marybeth.cohen@comcast.net. Thank you in advance for your willingness to participate. I can guarantee you that if you are available you will come away happy that you did so. And as an added bonus, IT S FUN. Ralph Loewenstein

First, I must thank Jackie Perlmutter for arranging a wonderful Ladies' Night Out at Chesapeake Seafood House. She was able to arrange for the "early bird" special dinners (even though it was past 6pm when the food orders were taken!) in a private setting. I was so sorry to have missed it. Secondly, many thanks to Lisa GoldbergBelle for conducting our business meeting. I appreciated her "filling in" for me. Our next event will be on Thursday, March 16 at 6pm at Mimosa Restaurant. This will be a very special evening. We will be "breaking bread" or should I say "breaking an eggroll" with the ladies from the Islamic Society of Greater Springfield! Ozma Rahman and Jackie Perlmutter are in charge of arrangments. Looking forward to seeing everyone. A reminder flyer will be sent closer to the date. At the February 16 meeting at Chesapeake it was discussed and voted on to contribute $ to the 3rd annual Mitzvah Mobile Food Pantry on May 20, Ralph Loewenstein is the chairperson. Jordan Litvak is in charge of volunteers. Hopefully, many of us will be volunteering either that day or with preliminary work. We participated last year in this worthwhile community project. Don't forget that Saturday, March 11 is the Purim Spiel. An annual event not to be missed!! Lastly, I would personally like to thank the Care Committee and everyone else who sent cards and donations in memory of my dear brother Sam Carl who passed away peacefully on January 29th. May his memory be for a blessing. Sandra Carl Weiss
