Dear Parents, Trip 2 Week 1 And we're off!!! Trip two began with welcome energy! Once everyone unpacked, got to meet their counselors and bunkmates and had a good night's rest, we jumped right into a full day of activities! Then, we flew into China, France and Egypt on a whirlwind tour. Our division heads Ayelet Polatoff and Chana Edinger are leading us 'Around the World' in 25 days! With bunks sunset hiking, the rest of the girls 'talent showed' their way into the night! With our phenomenal team of dedicated Married staff, we are sporting, fitnessing, culinary artsing, arts and craftsing, tennising, boating, swimming, wildernessing, acting, singing, and dancing. We are canteening and writing letters. We are shiuring and davening and enjoying Chef D's delicious fare. Our counselors are caring for their bunks and encouraging participation in the party that is camp! Our specialty staff add unique ruach to their positions, and we so appreciate them! We can't wait for a beautiful Camp Dina Shabbos! Thank you for entrusting us with your daughters. With blessings, Natalie and D'vorah Cardio Fun Arielle Sheinbein Second trip started off with a cardio blast! Many bunks enjoyed jumping around and had such fun working out. The music and high energy keeps them rocking to the beat and coming back for more during electives! ART STUDIO Renee Schneier Hip Hip Hooray...for CLAY! Soft, moist grey clay was rolled and kneaded in the art room for the smash hit clay elective. The girls were taught how to roll, pinch and pattern the clay as they fashioned adorable owls out of air dry clay. Our master sculptors are looking forward to painting their adorable creatures. Other projects done in the studio included paper necklace charms from recycled magazine pages and the much requested 'ole time favorite...shrinky dink jewelry!!!!! Next up...beaded feather hair clips!!!
** Sports Stars** Naomi Agbashoff Welcome trip two!!! We have had a great first week filled with sports. The girls have been playing kickball, softball, basketball, Newcomb and soccer and have all been having a great time. They are learning new skills, rules, and have been playing with great sportsmanship. We have even started our first elective... TENNIS!! The girls are working on their forehands, backhands and some of us are already serving. Keep up the great work!! Drama Tova Palakoff Lights, Cameras, ACTION!!! Our play is underway as we finish up tryouts. Each girl has been given a special part in our unbelievable production. From Drama to Dance and everything in between, our girls are already starting to shine! Pool Happenings Mrs. Shur We are off to a great second trip! The girls have been learning and participating so nicely. This week we had a pool-wide instruction lesson, where ALL the girls worked on the same skill together. It was fun! This week we worked on the flutter kick- that the kick comes from our hips, not our knees. So even though it s fun to splash in the pool, we don t want splashing from the flutter kick. Boating had been lots of fun too! We can t wait for more swimming next week and let s not forget about the water slides!! They re such a blast! It s like our very own water park! The Wild Side Chaya Phillips Bunks enjoyed roasting marshmallows at the fire circle while learning about the names of the different thicknesses of wood which we used to build a fire. The wood that girls learned about are called tinder, kindling and fuel. Yud Bais, Yud Gimmel, Yud Daled and Tes Vav awoke to cool temperatures Thursday morning and a cloudy sky. They were curious to know if they would be able to see the sunset with all the clouds. Hashem provided us with perfect hiking weather and a beautiful sunset! We completed our adventure with a campfire complete with a hot dog bbq and yummy S mores.
Culinary Arts Director Shira Reischer This week in culinary arts we made delicious mixed muffins - black and white muffins. They came out really professional like a black and white cookie. We also made confetti cakes loading the sprinkles on. The girls are learning great cooking skills and having fun. Mixed Muffins White batter 2 cups flour 3/4 cups sugar 2 teaspoons baking powder 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1 1/4 cups milk 2 eggs 1/3 cup oil 1 teaspoon vanilla Chocolate batter 1/4 cup sugar 1/3 cup choc chips 1/3 cup cocoa 1) Combine flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt in bowl 2) Beat in eggs, milk, oil and vanilla 3) Remove 1 1/2 cups of white batter to another bowl 4) Add to the second bowl sugar, cocoa and chocolate chips 5) Stir each bowl till well blended 6) Pour each batter at the same time side by side in muffin tin 7) Bake 350 for twenty minutes

PERSPECTIVES FROM CAMP MOM. Hi Camp Dina Parents; Once again as we head into Shabbos in Camp Dina (week #5; Trip 2) we are reminded of both new beginnings and continuity. Both apropos themes both in the Jewish Calendar and here in Camp, as we transfer from the mourning period of the Three Weeks to the Seven Weeks of Comfort between Tisha B'Av and Rosh Chodesh Elul. For some we are continuing our time here at Dina and while routines and surroundings are more than familiar there is a distinct different and new feeling. For others it is a true beginning and somewhat unfamiliar. For all it is the beginning of Trip 2 and kol hatchalot kashot ; all beginnings are challenging. Change, in any form (new campers, new counselors, new surroundings & routines), can throw us out of our comfort zone. As your children adjust and transition into this part of the summer encourage them to focus on the positive, look for the activities and people that will help them while they make this normal adjustment. Bear in mind that your daughters feelings and emotions, while real and intense for her at the time, will pass and abate. As they do they will gain valuable and necessary coping skills that will serve them well as they grow and develop. I often hear parents say, this is summer camp and it should fun and my daughter is suppose to be happy. That's why we pay to send her to Camp. Of course this is true and the ultimate goal, (not only for the summer) but certainly in life. Like in any other situation of life there are tremendous opportunities for growth and healthy development; especially in this context. As adults we understand that children live in the moment and their world is colored by that perspective. Part of healthy development is learning that the way we feel right now may, can and usually will evolve. Adjustment as well as situations take time and our happiness is more in our hands than in the hands others or under the control circumstances. We realize, as thinking, mature and developing adults that in life less and less is truly in our control. What ultimately assures our happiness is our perspective and ability to cope with whatever comes our way. It is only human (parental) nature to want to shield our most precious ones from any disappointment, difficulty, and sadness if not absolutely necessary. While this instinct is not wrong we do have to be careful in what measure we use this shield. Natural circumstances, like not having all the girls you wanted in your bunk, or not knowing a majority of the people you're with, or having a personality in your bunk (counselor or camper) that is quite different from what your used to or expected as well as homesickness are temporarily uncomfortable and for some even painful but are actually important experiences in social development, character strength and coping skills. Shielding a child from having to struggle through these challenges is actually depriving your child of necessary life skills and healthy development. Like vitamin no can be a pill unpleasant to have to say to a child, (and we all know how much easier it is to just say OK ), hearing (or reading) our girls cry out to us for help, or in (momentary) pain or discomfort goes against our very grain not to swoop in and rescue. These situations in the summer are actually bigger and more lasting opportunities for their growth than during the school year. When our children come to us with a problem we need to listen, observe and weigh the factors involved. Like challenging & worthwhile assignments our children may be faced with during the year we have a choice; take over and feed them the answers. Helping to get them through it in the easiest most pain free way (both for them and us) or we can stand behind them with a gentle guiding hand, pointing and encouraging but not really doing the work; to spite how much they may balk.
It is true that this is the summer. It is Camp and it's all about fun and happiness but it's also a big part of your child's life. Life is about growth, opportunity and challenges. We cannot avoid that and when we model for our prodigy that happiness is not as dependent on external factors as it is on the reality that we create (our perspective). We will be giving them the greatest gift towards happiness of all. Have a Good Shabbos, Kova Herzig
Trip 1 Week 3. Sunday night we enjoyed a great illusionist performance with lots of camper participation!
